IPod 20GB wont power on?

Hi,
My son has the 4th gen iPod 20GB and it just stopped working, its out of warranty so i have no issues with opening it up, when plugging it into my Macbook, Powerbook or Mac mini, nothing happens, it doesn't show on the Mac, does this simply need a new battery? i am hoping so!
Let me know any suggestions,
Thanks
Danny

Yes, the battery seems the obvious culprit. Have a look at these also.

    - First connect the iPod to your computer.  If iTunes sees the iPod, restore the iPod via iTunes
    - If not seen, reset the iPod and then try restoring the iPod.
Reset iPod touch:  Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - If still not seen, place the iPod in recovery mode and then try to retore the iPod.  For recovery mode see:

If your iPod shows up in Explorer under 'my computer' try changing the drive letter:
    -- Click on Start=>Control Panel=>Admin Tools=>Computer Management=>Disk Management
-- Right-Click on the iPod and select “change drive letter”
-- Choose something further along in the alphabet that is unused (Usually, “M”, “N”, “O” or something similar)
    -- Safely eject the iPod
    -- Reboot the PC

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

+I tried various troubleshooting steps and each time when plugging the iPod in Itunes it starts up and it takes maybe 1 minute trying to recognize it when the computer crashes and reboots automatically going to the black screen and doing a file dump.+
I'm curious about this point. Is there any flash of a blue screen at any point here? (That's a more familiar sort of thing to be seeing prior to the system doing a restart after a serious error.)

  • Brand New ipod Touch wont turn on and isnt recognized by windows or macbook

I just got my ipod touch and macbook today. When i press the button on top of the ipod, it wont do anything. Also, when i plug the ipod into my macbook and my other PC, they both dont recognize it. Nothing has come up on the ipod's screen. Should i take it to the apple store in my area? Thank you all!

    Hi--
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Sorry to hear about your iPod. If you're close to an Apple store, then I'd definitely take it in and have them look at it, especially if it won't turn on when it's plugged into the MacBook or the PC. Even if the battery was drained out (unlikely on a brand new iPod), it should start up when it's getting power from the USB bus.
It's probably best to check out this list of Apple Stores:
    http://www.apple.com/retail/storelist/
Pick the one closest to you, then make a reservation at the Genius Bar. It's been a while since I had to do that, but I think I had to wait until after midnight, or maybe until around 6 AM the day I wanted to go in.

  • IPod 20GB is no longer playing.  Can you help?

My iPod 20GB has been working fine for months, but now it wont play anything. It just goes from song to song without playing.

Your silver bullet of resolving your iPod issue – is to restore your iPod to factory settings.

  • My old 1st gen ipod touch wont turn on and makes a clicking sound when I plug it in.

My old 1st gen ipod touch wont turn on and makes a clicking sound when I plug it in. The ipod doesnt turn on when I plug it into the wall, even if I let it charge, and itunes won't recognize it. I have tried to reset it with the home and power buttons. Whats wrong and how can I fix it? I think it might be the memory or the battery. What could the clicking sound be related to? Thanks

Try placing the iPod in recovery mode and then try restoring the iPod.  For recovery mode see:
iPhone and iPod touch: Unable to update or restore
After that I would make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

  • My iPod touch wont restore due to error 1611.  Please help.

My ipod touch keeps showing a red low battery. It wont power on. I try to restore it and it says it cant restore due to error 1611. I tried diffident usb jacks. I uninstalled itunes an reinstalled. Among other things. Nothing works. Someone please help. I just want to restore it.

Hey i HAVE/HAD the same problem but right in THIS moment i solved it! And i'm gonna tell you how:
    1) You have to uninstall ALL the programs that are from Apple.
    2) Go into control panel if you are on a windows and delete everything that says Author (Apple inc.)
    3) Here is a list of every thing you have to Uninstall:
    Apple application support
    Apple mobile device support
    Apple software update
    Bonjour
    iTunes
    Quicktime player
    Safari
    4) After that just go to Apple.com and download the lastest version of iTunes!
    5) Install it and sync your iPhone/iPod Touch out of Recovery mode.
i hope that helped you, it sure did to me. bye
