IPod 3G mounting via Firewire problem

hello,
I've bought an iPod 3G 20gb. All was ok, but I couldn't connect it to my powrbook via firewire. iPod was charging but wasn't seen by computer (itunes, finder nor system profiler). When I plugged the ipod via usb powerbook recoknized it. Unfortunatly it wasn't possible to restore the iPod, becouse the 3rd generation (dock connector) needs firewire to it.
I read that erasing could help, so I did it. Nothing changes. Maybe it, that now I can't use my iPod, becouse it hasn't software....
I thought that firewire cabel is broken - isn't there is no problem to connect ipod mini.
I've seen that some of you had the same problem... Have you solve it?
please help me...

For Mac computer
1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
6. Connect it with your Mac via Firewire, see whether it can be recognized

  • LaCie External Harddrive suddenly won't mount via Firewire 400 or 800

My LaCie External d2 Quadra suddenly won't mount via Firewire 400 or 800, but will mount via USB 2.0.
    I have:
Tested the harddrive on another computer and it works fine via firewire.
Shut down and re-boot. It had no effect.
    Updated all software.
Note: My MBP will not boot if the Firewire 800 cable is connected.

I've had a whole heap of strife with my two macally enclosures over FW. I've only got them working twice together, regardless of jumper settings on the harddrives. I can plug either in fine, but if I use both together, my mac shuts down and refuses to boot. One drive is bus powered, the other is powered via the mains
    I wish you luck

  • IPod mounts via Firewire, but not via USB

My wife's iPod used to mount just fine via the USB connector on her PC.
Now it doesn't mount at all via USB. I have tried two different cables.
It DOES mount via my own Firewire cable.
I have updated the iPod mini software to the latest, and the iTunes to the latest.
Any ideas why USB no longer works?
    Thanks

I wanted to get rid of this one since nobody answered. I think the 3G is simply broken. It works fine via firewire, and now I use it as a stationary music server -- the battery was too old for regular use. I bought a 5G.

  • External hard Drive will not mount via firewire tpo my Powerbook G4

I have a Powerbook G4 1.5, 2 Gb Ram and an 80 Gb Hard Drive. Well my problem is, I went and purchased a Western Digital External Hard Drive. The box states that this hard drive is compatible for both Windows and Mac. But for some reason I can't get the external hard drive to mount via the firewire. However it will mount by using the USB.
So can someone please provide some troubleshooting tips on how I can get this external hard drive to mount?
    Thanks

    hi there,
in your case, your drive is probably bad because the copy was interrupted. your hard drive may be finished, but more likely, just the file structure is damaged and/or you have bad sectors.
    you have a few options:
*if you don't need the data back:*
    • see if the drive appears in disk utility and try to erase/reformat (make sure to zero out data to avoid bad sectors)
    • if it doesn't appear, try a pc. it won't recognize it, but it may allow you to reformat/initialize it. then, connect back into mac (which will recognize a pc formatted drive) and reformat as mac os x extended (journaled).
*if you need the data back:*
    • try a program like data rescue II, file salvage, or boomerang data recovery first to recover the data
    • see if the drive appears in disk utility and try to repair disk
    • if that doesn't work, try disk warrior and/or drive genius
    • if you aren't successful, you may want to try a professional data recovery service (or me first, to ensure that you actually need someone as high tech as drive savers)
    • if you are successful and are able to recover the data, then erase the drive (zero out data) and then move the data back, to ensure you're working off a well formatted drive.
fyi, if your computer freezes in the future, be sure to try appleoptionesc first and force quitting the problem application. if that doesn't work, try controloption+appleeject (shutdown) and/or optionappleeject (restart). if those doesn't work, in this situation, the next best move would probably have been turning off the power on the hard drive. if that doesn't unfreeze the system in a few minutes, then hold the power button.
    hope this helps,

  • LaCie HD does not mount via Firewire, but does via USB (in Tiger)

I've read various posts on issues people faced when using a LaCie firewire HD after upgrading to Tiger. I never had any issues pre upgrade. I have installed the new firmware on my d2 250GB drive, at least I think I have. The drive will not mount when connected via firewire, but will when connected via USB. When I try running the update tool, it sees the drive and says there is no update available. Just to be clear, this is when the drive is connected via USB. The tool does not see the drive when connected via Firewire.
My firewire is definitely working fine (tested with iSight).
I've emailed LaCie, we'll see if that leads to anything. Any ideas???

My Lacie ethernet mini is not working after Lion upgrade.
Finally got an admission from Lacie that the login software won't work with 10.7 and they suggested going back to Snow Leopard . . .
Apparently the login software cannot be changed or overwritten so now Lacie drives are obsolete when using Lion.
I wish there was a way to wipe it clean and use it without the login software, but they couldn't suggest a way.
I note you may have had better luck but I don't know how to use terminal, so I may have to junk it, or possibly take out the drive and buy a caddy for it?

  • I FIXED MY IPOD! Mounting/internal software problems? Read!

All of you guys having different problems with the iPod concerning mounting to your desktop, not being recognized by your computer, spinning CD-ROM icons on the iPod screen, etc...check out this thread:
    http://discussions.info.apple.com/webx?128@@.68bdbd07
You know how they only make light bulbs last a certain amount of time so you keep buying them, although they can actually manufacture them to last a lifetime? As is Apple and the iPod. Don't succumb to buying a brand new one if yours is having problems!! Read this!

New, important discovery on this method. On my desktop, I disabled my antivirus software while installing (BitDefender Pro). On my laptop, I didn't disable it. iTunes bombed and wouldn't see my iPod.
Did an uninstall of all the apple apps, disabled BitDefender, and did a reinstall. Works like a charm.

  • 3rd Gen iPod won't mount via firewire - any ideas?

After working for a brief spell when I first hooked it up, the progress bar would freeze while I was trying to copy files across to the HD. I unplugged, reset the iPod and tried it in my old clamshell iBook, where it worked fine again.
I tried resetting the PMU on the Macbook, but this only made things worse - the iPod now refuses to mount, despite still working fine on my old iBook. Tried resetting PRAM too but no difference.
Do I have a duff port? Or could it be an issue with 10.4.6 on the Macbook?

I tried a JVC digital handycam while on the phone to AppleCare, which it recognised in iChat, and showed a live picture in iMovie. I don't know how I would check for consistency with this device, but it seemed to be working ok.
I'm connecting via a dock but have also tried connecting direct - all official Apple cables. No difference.
I'm now noticing new behaviour. When I plug the iPod in it mounts very briefly, triggers iTunes, then unmounts. It stays charging from the Macbook's firewire port, but the 'do not disconnect' disappears and I can use it as if it was only connected to AC. This is reproducible, and is the same if I turn off the launch iTunes option.
Once again, it works flawlessly with the old iBook.
I'm almost tempted to go down to the Apple Store in Regent St. and plug my iPod into a Macbook there to rule out software - unless you have any other suggestions?
    Thanks for your continued support.

  • G drive mini won't mount via firewire 800. usb ok

It hasnt been too long i bought myself a gdrive mini to benefit from the firewire 800 port. It seems that once my macbook gets warm the drive won't mount. It mounts just fine via usb. I've been to the genius bar twice and it worked both times, thats when i noticed it only happens when its warm. I was convinced its a software issue, but i dont know what to think anymore.
Has anyone encounter this issue? Any ideas of whats causing this?
Any help would be greatly appreciated

WAIT WAIT EVERYONE....READ THIS....VERY SIMPLE FIX!
My G mini 750GB drive stopped mounting.....I tried a million methods to get the G mini drive to mount and searched a ton of forums but never found this VERY EASY FIX.  Try powering down your computer (imac in my case), then UNPLUG the power supply from the back of the computer....VERY IMPORTANT TO UNPLUG COMPUTER FROM ELECTRIC SOURCE. Nothing else worked for me.
Wait a minute, then plug back in and re-boot....MAGIC - freakin G mini showed up on desk top!
Good Lord why is this simple fix not all over the G mini site??????  It ought to be on the front of the box when you buy this thing!  Seems no one at G mini sites talk about this and people are sending drives all over for repair!
    Hope this helps!

  • Ipod not mounting

    hi all
I have a 2nd gen ipod and i also ordered the new one.
anyway my second gen ipod does not mount via firewire (its only firewire)
on my dual 2.7 power mac but it mounts on all my other macs.
It used to work with no problem but for some reason now it does not. Any ideas.
I tried using software such as mount me i also tried to see if it shows up in disk utility and unix but neither see it.
    tried all ports.
Lacie and g-raid drives work fine
Also the ipod screen says that its ok to disconnect when i connect it.
Some one heard anything like this.

I'm bumping this topic, because I have an almost identical issue.
My 3G stopped mounting and showing up in iTunes lately too. This behavior seems to have coincided with installing iTunes 6.0, but not 100% sure about that. I have yet to find a decent way to revert iTunes, so no way to say if that's the culprit. The device mounts fine on the USB port and it also mounts on my Powerbook (FW port) with the same cable. Also, my wife's mini shows the same behavior on this computer.
The firewire port seems to be functioning fine, since my external drive mounts and functions with no problem. My camera also works fine. Also, the ipod charges when connected, so I know the power is there. Also, the ipod shows up in the Firewire section of the System Profiler when it's connected.
I even went so far as to purchase an Adaptec firewire PCI card, but it does the exact same thing.
The problem computer is a dual 1.42GHz mirrored door mac.
Here are some of the things I've tried:
    - Several ipod resets
    - Performed restore of the ipod, via USB
    - Disk mode
    - New firewire card
    - Disconnect all FW devices, except the ipod
    - Apple's firewire troubleshooting recommendations (power off, etc.)
    - Created new user
    - Disk Utility (does not see the ipod via firewire)
    - Deleted the com.apple.ipod.plist
    - Performed ipod FW diagnostics (passed)
The battery on this 3g is not taking much of a charge any more. That's not an issue for me, since I usually have it plugged into my car cradle, but I'm thinking this might be part of my problem.
Has anyone had similar issues when their battery was weak?
Anyone had a similar problem after installing iTunes 6?
I think either OSX or iTunes is the culprit here. Anyway, I'm not quite ready to give up the ghost on this 3G -- I like it...

  • Cannot connect iPod Touch 16 thru Firewire

My iPod Touch 16 works fine thru the USB2 lead, but won't work thru a new purchase Firewire lead. I checked the system and the Firewire controllers appear to be working.
I suspect I may need to change the drive letter for the iPod/ Firewire socket in order to use it.
    Any ideas, people?

All current iPods are USB-only. I believe this changed with the iPod Video (5G I believe).
The iPod should charge via Firewire, but not sync.

  • Firewire Problems : Mounting iPod Using External HD - iBook G4?

I cannot get my iPod to mount on the iBook's desktop. iBook is a 1.33Ghz G4.
I have a 1st generation iPod and bought an external Seagate HD (160GB) and a drive enclosure (the latter included an external powerblock, I can post the make/model if needed). I bought the HD in with the intention of storing my iTunes music library.
I've never had a problem mounting the iPod on the iBook via the Firewire port. Using the external HD is a different story. Because the iBook has only a single Firewire port, I connect the external HD to the iBook's Firewire Port and then connect the iPod to the Firewire port on the back of the external HD. When in this configuration, the iPod fails to mount on the desktop.
I've done a temporary, barebones workaround by copying a few critical music files onto my iBook's HD iTune library and then just downloading those few files to the iPod. But this is a huge PITA. My iPod is pretty much crippled if I cannot load the music files I need on it. I'm frozen out of my music library. My iPod only is only 5gig capacity & will not store my entire music library, so I need to have the flexibility to load the music I want, when I want.
Can any one advise what, if anything can be done to get the iPod to mount while connected to the external HD?
Thanks a bunch for any assistance.

    Anyone?

  • 3G iPod - no more "OK to disconnect" screens, a Firewire problem

I have an old 3G iPod - 15GB with the 4 touch buttons - that still works fine. This is a model that can sync via USB or Firewire, but can only get power from Firewire.
For the first couple of years it synced with a Win2000 machine just fine via Firewire. When syncing was done, the iPod would sit and display a "OK to Disconnect" message. If I elected to sync again, it would just wakeup and sync.
I have moved to a new iMac C2D and I am very happy with the machine in general. However, the iPod is not quite the same.
I decided to restore the iPod and thus use Macintosh formatting - no problem, it works fine. However, now when I sync I never see the "OK to Disconnect" message - instead, once the sync is complete the iPod just unmounts and charges as if it were being powered by the AC adaptor.
That is fine but for one thing - if I wait a couple of minutes, the iPod goes to sleep while charging (like when using the AC adaptor) and the whole Firewire bus seems to take a snooze with it! Once that happens, reconnecting the iPod does nothing and I cannot mount any of my external Firewire hard drives. The only solution is to restart the iMac, and everything is OK again.
My workaround has been to set the iPod to "Enable Disk usage", which forces it to remain mounted and awake. However, it is not supposed to work this way. Any clues??
P.S. - I just tried plugging the iPod into a G4 iBook, and while the Firewire bus does not fail the "OK to Disconnect" screen still does not appear. Hmmm..

Your iPod is probably in hard disk mode. In iTunes, while your Ipod is connected, right click on the iPod and go to options. Make sure that the box next to 'enable disk use' is UNCHECKED. That should fix the problem. Let me know if this works for you.

  • IPod transfer speed slower via Firewire?

HI, I am using ipod 4th gen with my 17 inch powerbook 1.33, 10.4.4, itunes 6.
Now the itunes take about 30 sec to transfer a song to ipod via Firewire, but when I change to the USB, it works well, about 1 song/sec.
I've tried to reset, restore ipod, reinstall itunes, even I have tried on another firewire connection, disabled spotlight (add ipod into privacy). But it is still the same.
I just wanna figuer it out why, my other firewire device works fine though.

I also recently have the same problem. I have a first gen U2 edition with 20GB. I have tried all the stuff you guys have tried except the complete reset of the unit since it still plays. Can anyone tell me how to do a complete uninstall of iTunes 6.0.2? I have trashed the old 6.0.2 before the latest update but still have the problem. My thought is if I can uninstall the iTunes and reinstall my original 6.0.0 version, maybe the mounting of the iPod will come back. What do you think?

  • Firewire-HDD plugged to MacPro unmeant mounted on iMac via FireWire network

    Hi folks,
I am from Germany with the following problem.
I connected two MACs - Mac Pro (10.5) and iMac (10.6) - via Firewire for networking.
Now I bought a FireWire 800 HDD and plugged it into the MacPro for faster access to video-data. Unfortunately every time I turn on the HDD it is mounted on the iMAC???? I always have to pull out the FireWire network-cable from the iMac before. Than it works and the HDD is seen by the MacPro. After that I can plug in the Firewire Network-cable back into the iMac for work.
Is there a solution? Is it possible that it matters which port I use for network or HDD...??
    Thanks for help, Andy

    Hmmmmmm, it is really simple....:-)
1.) I have an iMAC with connection to Internet.
2.) I have an MacPro which has no connection to Internet and thats what I want.
3.) Sometimes I need to share Files between iMac and MacPro, so I have connected them permanent to a Mini-Network via FireWire.
4.) I work with FinalCut on the MacPro
5.) I bought a FireWire HDD for use ONLY with MacPro NOT to share it.
6.) I connected the FW-HDD to the MacPro
7.) I turn on the FW-HDD and it appears and is mounted ONLY by the iMAC what I DO NOT want.
    8.) I turn off the FW-HDD
9.) I disconnct the two Macs from FW-Connection
10.) I turn on the FW-HDD and it appears and is mounted on the MacPro what I WANT
11.) I connect the FW-Network back on, to share Files between the MACs - NOT from the FW-HDD, (it is ONLY for the MacPro Video) but from the internal drives.
    12.) So far, so good.
13.) Problem: I want to mount the FW-Hdd to the MacPro by turning it on without disconnecting the two Macs.
    Better????
