IPod 4G totally bricked

I was attempting to upgrade my 64GB iPod Touch 4G to iOS 5. iTunes kept giving me a "corrupted download" message, so I searched and found a way to download the OS upgrade manually. When I tried putting the iPod in DFU mode and applying that, I got an "Unknown error (14)" message, after iTunes had wiped my iPod, but before the restore completed. All my iPod backups are gone (not showing up in iTunes anyway) and the iPod is now empty.
I searched for solutions to the error 14 problem and ended up trying to downgrade back to the last version (4.3.5). Now I get a 3194 error. I disabled my firewall/virus scanner and still get the error. There are no entries in my hosts file. The iPod was not jailbroken and it is about 3 weeks past the warranty period (of course)
Is there any way to reset this thing manually back to factory settings so I can try the upgrade again?

Apple does not support downgrading an iOS. You will get error messages if you try.
For error 14:
Error 13 and 14: These errors are typically resolved by performing one or more of the steps listed below:
Perform USB isolation troubleshooting, including trying a different USB port directly on the computer. See the advanced steps below for USB troubleshooting.
Put a USB 2.0 hub between the device and the computer.
Try a different USB 30-pin dock-connector cable.
Eliminate third-party security software conflicts.
There may be third-party software installed that modifies your default packet size in Windows by inserting one or more TcpWindowSize entries into your registry. Your default packet size being set incorrectly can cause this error. Contact the manufacturer of the software that installed the packet-size modification for assistance. Or, follow this article by Microsoft: How to reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) to reset the packet size back to the default for Windows.
Connect your computer directly to your Internet source, bypassing any routers, hubs, or switches. You may need to restart your computer and modem to get online.
Try to restore from another known-good computer and network.

- Try:
iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
- If not successful and you can't turn the iPod fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for at least an hour try the above again.
- If still not successful that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

Yes. When you connect your devices, iTunes knows which one is which so you can customize what does and does not get synched to each device.
The only caveat is each user needs to have their own unique Apple ID AND their own account on the computer so you can keep purchased apps and such separate...
By having separate computer accounts, each user has their own "space" to put stuff in. iTunes knows this and will make individual iTunes library folders for each user.

Ipod touch in brick situation

After charing/connected to a charging source for at least four hours, see if placing the iPod in recovery mode and then restore.

IPod Touch 4g Bricked after 4.3.4. :(

So my iPod Touch 4G (32Gb) just got bricked.
I'm running Windows 7 64-bit, with iTunes 64-bit for windows installed. And before you ask, no, the iPod wasn't jailbroken - never was, never will.
It was halfway-charged, connected to the computer. I read iOS had just gotten a security update, so I asked iTunes to check for updates, and it found iOS 4.3.4. So I gave it the OK to update, it downloaded the thing, and then it started to install it. Right at the end of the instalation process, it game me a generic error message (no useful info, whatsoever). Since that moment on, the iPod just shows the iTunes logo with the usb dongle and arrow. It does not show up in Windows' "My Computer", and it doesn't show up in iTunes either.
So, I restarted my PC, checked to see if all the apropriate services were running (and they were). I reinstalled iTunes and every single other apple software, from Bonjour to the device drivers. The problem stands.
Ironically, windows detects I connect something, it even recognised that the Apple drivers were the correct ones to use for the decive, but it still won't show up on Windows Explorer or iTunes.
Another detail is that when I turn the device off, it doesn't show the arrow and slider to power it off or anything, it just goes dark. As if it were brand new.
I'm also unable to start the device on recovery mode (and I'm thinking that wouldn't help anyway, since iTunes doesn't recognise that the device is even connected), or DFU mode, nothing.
What should I do?

I was eventually able to restore the iPod through someone else's computer, so thanks for all the replies recommending that!
@andreas765apladvr: I did try that, I was fairly exaustive as to what to unninstall, and the problem still persisted. Maybe I did something wrong, or I missed some detail. Guess it comes with the first time one deals with apple software on windows, heh.
@sentaroking: Come on dude, be reasonable: there is no such thing as a 100% bug-free update. Too many variables to consider. But yes, testing things to exaustion eliminates most of the woes.
I have to say though, this solution still strikes me as bizzarre. But it did work!

My ipod touch is bricked i think stuck on apple sign but comes back on password screen after an hour or so!!!!

My iPod show total white screen as soon as I connect it to my PC and cannot syncronize

My iPod nano 6th generation cannot syncronize anymore to the PC (I tried with three different PC with latest iTunes installed) and as soon as I connect it to the PC the icons on the screen disappear and it shows total blank white sreen. This error is often related to USB timing. Try changing USB ports, using a different dock connector to USB cable, and other available USB troubleshooting steps (troubleshooting USB connections. If you are using a dock, bypass it and connect directly to the white Apple USB dock connector cable. If the issue persists on a known-good computer, the device may need service.
If the issue is not resolved by USB isolation troubleshooting, and another computer is not available, try these steps to resolve the issue:
Connect the device to iTunes, confirm that the device is in Recovery Mode. If it's not in Recovery Mode,put it into Recovery Mode.
Restore and wait for the error.
When prompted, click OK.
Close and reopen iTunes while the device remains connected.
The device should now be recognized in Recovery Mode again.
Try to restore again.
If the steps above do not resolve the issue, try restoring using a known-good USB cable, computer, and network connection.

My iPod is a brick that resets

I plugged my Nano in to upload more stuff on to it, and surprise surprise, I get the friendly Folder with Exclimation point. I've seen this before (Because Apple makes good hardware) and figured I'll just do the reset thing (It resets, flashes the folder, and quickly shuts off and becomes a tiny little white brick). That didnt work so I decided to try updating it again, well it wont update because of a "writing error." Still not too furious, I decide to restore, well it wont even restore. I'm at a point where I just want to get an iRiver, because this stuff happens too much and the only way to fix it is "well durr you could reset it." I dont want to send it in, I want to fix it and keep using it. Could someone please help me?

If you are unable to restore, this article suggests placing the ipod into disk mode and then reattempting. It is also important to note that the ipod should be disconnected from the computer prior to launching the updater. That way you can connect it once the updater prompts you to do so.
I am interested in knowing more about the "writing error" you are receiving, because specific errors often have specific solutions.
Are you getting either of these errors:
"Firmware update failure. Disk write error."
"Attempting to copy to the disk <iPod name> failed. The disk could not be read from or written to."

Can i use my old ipod firewire power brick to charge my iphone?

i have a power brick from an old 20g b&w ipod. it looks like a laptop brick, but smaller. it has a FW socket and says it puts out 12v 67a.
i'm going on a trip and would like a spare charger. will this work for my iphone 3g or will it fry it?

i'm getting a 404 error on that link for the ipod touch manual. but i looked at p.33 of the iphone user's guide, and it does say that you can't use a FW charger. it doesn't say why, however.
i see that the iphone charger is 5w/1a. what happens if you use a 12w/67a charger with a device that's configured for the former?
according to somebody in this thread, the device being powered "requests" only the power it needs, so you can use a more powerful charger (a MBP charger for a MB, for example) - but you can't use a less powerful charger to charge a device that needs more power (a MB charger for a MBP, for example).
(for instance, can you charge a macbook with a macbook pro brick - i know you can't do the reverse)

Ipod screen totally black

I forgot my ipod in the car for one week and when i put to charge again nothing happened, it's totally black and there is none reaction if i plug in with itunes...

After being connected to a charging source at least overnight

IPod 3g totally blocked :(

Hi. I have big problem with my iPod 3g.
Few days ago it totally blocked itself. I turned it on and wanted to play music and suddenly it restarted and now it is only showing Apple logo. My computer or iTunes won't recognize it. I tried restarting it and when I do it, there is no change, only an Apple logo is displayed and it won't react to nothing.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks for the tip, I have tried your advice but I still have the same problem. When I reset it, it is still totally blocked and all I see on the display is an Apple logo.
I have taken it to the Apple dealership and they should fix the problem.

IPod Nano totally unresponsive

Ok, so we've been through the tonnes of copies of the same thing; ie. reset your iPod, and nothing works. Essentially the Nano has only been used a handfull of times (no more than an hour or so in total) to play music, but is now just about totally full with songs.
Then one day it just wouldn't turn back on. We tried the reset thing a lot, with zero results. The LCD just remains black. Put it back in the dock, and nothing. Windows doesn't detect it, iTunes has nothing etc etc.
Then we tried plugging the Nano into the computer next to it, which happens to have a 60Gb 5G iPod sitting in a dock. Nothing again (absolutely nothing, not even USB detection). Plug the 5G into the Nano computer (had to swap docks because using special Nano one, but same lead etc) and it detects the 5G. Comes up with all that usual windows USB detection stuff. So both computers are good by the look of it. Which is why we aren't trying to uninstall iTunes or run the updater (if you just cannot detect the Nano on any computer then why bother?). Also plugging the 5G directly into the cable for the Nano shows it charging.
Just to make sure I just plugged it into my laptop upstairs (another iPod connector), and that doesn't detect it either. Not even a flicker of recognition from anything.
Sigh. So anyone have any advice apart from the usual 5R efforts? And I'll try re-installing iTunes/ updater if someone can give a decent explanation of how that will allow it to be detected in the first place (can't update without detecting). And on other machines...
Just filled in the service request. Erm, 2 months waiting list if you want the engraving kept on it (only if you have a Nano and live in Europe - why?). And she wants to keep the engraving. Thats longer than the original order time (when the Nano was very new). Grief....

Yes, the software was on all 3 computers. Although plugging in the Nano into any of them gives nothing, not even a USB detection, which is what happens when I plug my 5G into the computer which the Nano normally uses. I do have another computer without iTunes though. Could try that tomorrow (in bed now - also pretty ill today ). If no iTunes then it should definitely show the usual USB detection gumf, much like my portable drive on a new USB port/ machine.
Failing that I should be getting a brand new clean PC in another couple of weeks, so I should try plugging into that if not all sorted by then.

Ipod is totally frozen

I went to charge my ipod from my computer and when i put the adapter into my ipod, it turned on but not it is totally frozen and wont' turn off! The backlight is still on and I tried resetting it and it won't work. None of the buttons are working or anything. I can't even turn it off. I am using an Ipod Nano! Please Help! What can I do? RESETTING IS NOT WORKING!

Ipod Touch Totally Dead After Failed Update to 4.0 OS

Hi folks,
There is another discussion with the exact same title but the problem was never resolved. I decided to create a new discussion because I successfully revived my buddies iPod that had the same problem. I know a lot of people probably still have paperweight out-of-warranty iPods lying around, so here goes!
My friend had a 3rd gen 8GB iPod Touch and uses iTunes on Windows XP. He plugged his iPod in one night and iTunes recommended he update to OS4. He was previously running the latest OS3 so he said "why not?!". Along went the update no problem until right before rebooting the iPod at the end. He reported that all of a sudden, the battery charging screen popped up with a fully charged green battery, then instantly changed to a red "dead battery" screen then it shut off entirely. That was it. Dead. Nothing he would do with the buttons gave any sign of life.
1 month later of researching, trying DFU mode and all sorts of attempts - still a dead, attractive paperweight with never a single pixel of light on the screen. He finally gave up and asked me to take a look at it.
I tried charging it overnight with a 110V to USB wall charger (as some people recommended) - no change.
I tried plugging it into a Mac (as some people also suggested) - no change, no signs of life.
Plugging it into a Windows XP machine gave an "Unknown USB device" or "USB device not recognized" error.
Well. I managed to get it into DFU (restore) mode and reinstalled OS4.2 with no problem (but it was not obvious) - now it is working again! A fully revived iPod Touch!
So, here is what I did:
1. Left "charging" overnight with a wall-charger NOT THE USB PORT OF A PC OR MAC.
2. Getting the iPod into DFU mode is tricky and a question of precise timing so it seems. The exact sequence that worked for me was: 1. HOLD the power button. 2. HOLD (at the same time) the Home button. 3. After 10 seconds, release the POWER button and continue to HOLD the Home button. Eventually, the PC or Mac should detect a new USB device and automatically install the driver for the DFU recovery mode. Once the iPod is detected in this mode, you can release the Home button. Note that you MUST have iTunes installed in order for the computer to install the driver for the iPod. If you do not have iTunes installed, Windows will still report the device as a "USB Device" and ask for the driver (contrary to the "Unknown USB device" or "USB device not recognized" errors). Once the device is happy in your OS, fire up iTunes and follow the instructions to restore your iPod. Enjoy! I recommend downloading/installing the LATEST ITUNES before recovering your device. Older versions of iTunes may contain the bug that killed your iPod the first time you tried updating.
Notes: 1. According to Apple, holding the 2 buttons down for 10 seconds and releasing both buttons at the same time simply performs a RESET of the iPod. It does not put it into DFU mode. You MUST continue holding the Home button after releasing the power button in order to get it to convert to DFU mode. I think this is where most people are having trouble. Also, it may have been a coincidence of the exact time I held the Home button after releasing the power button. Try holding it for different intervals after releasing the power button (i.e. 1 sec, 2 secs, 3 secs all the way to 10 secs or even more). BE PATIENT and don't give up! Unless your iPod has a real HARDWARE PROBLEM (which if it was working fine before you tried to update it probably does not), you can ALWAYS get it into DFU mode because that part is HARDCODED in a chip in the iPod and cannot be changed or damaged.
When I was playing with the iPod trying to get it in DFU mode, Windows would see it as a Unknown USB Device. Then sometimes it would disappear and come back as an Unknown USB device. This is a GOOD THING. That means that the iPod IS resetting as per Apple's instructions (which means the iPod DOES have some sort of life). After trying 4 or 5 times, I finally got it to disappear and reappear in DFU mode (as a simple "USB Device" because I did not have iTunes installed. After installing the latest iTunes, it installed the correct drivers automatically).
So give it a try and post your results! Good luck!

Just for clarification so other people don't get confused and this misinformation keeps getting generated, Apple did not sell a 3rd generation 8GB iPod Touch.
So, your friend must have a 2nd generation iPod Touch.
The 3rd generation was only made in the 32GB and the 64GB models.

The 2nd generation has A1288 stamped on the back
The 3rd generation has A1318 stamped on the back and again, only on the 32GB and 64GB models.
Some software is only designed for the 3rd generation and above so making sure what generation you have can be very important before you possibly buy something your iPod Touch can't use.
