IPod 4G transferring, freezing, skipping problems

I have an 4G 30 gig iPod. A few weeks ago when I was transferring files from a computer that was not mine onto my iPod, it froze and I had to disconnect it without ejecting it, and all my songs and data were erased. This was shortly after updating to iTunes 7, but I don't know if that had anything to do with it.)
Afterwards when I got home I tried to put my songs back onto my iPod but everytime it would transfer a few songs (sometimes 20, sometimes 50) but it would freeze up and the only way I could get anything to unfreeze would be to unplug the iPod without ejecting it again. I've restored my iPod and updated it several times, but to no avail - it seems to be working fine for a few minutes, then it freezes while transferring the songs over.
The few songs I managed to transfer onto my iPod are also glitchy when I listen to them. Sometimes they will play fine, sometimes not at all. When they do play, at the beginning/end of the songs it will suddenly play a split-second of an entirely different song, then resume playing the song it was playing.
I really do not know what to do. I've tried using the Disk Utility to restore and erase, etc as well, but I really don't know what more to do. Please help.

There isn't any need to buy a new iPod (hopefully). It sounds like the head in your hard drive is simply disaligned, causing the click.
You stand a good chance of it working again.
What you want to do is follow the advice in

  • Skipping problem with ipod

I have another problem with my 30G ipod video. It skips certain songs, not entirely, but partway through. For instance, there is a song that it will play for 15 sec, and then skip to the next one. It is always the same songs and it skips at the same point in the song. However, if I scan through the song it will allow me to scan past the point where it would usually skip, and then play the rest of the song fine. There are at least two or three that it does this with, but there are undoubtedly more because I have not listened to nearly all the songs on it yet (I just uploaded them).
I have tried a few things, including restoring the ipod, deleting and reloading the problem songs, and resetting the ipod. The songs in question play with no problem in itunes.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

I had an iPod Classic 5th Gen that I upgraded from 30gb to 80gb.  The problem I'm having is that it will not sync more than about 5.4gb worth of songs.  The iPod begins to freeze mid sync and the (-69) error message haults the sync process.  The hard drive has been upgraded, it has a new logicboard (with 128mb RAM), new housing, battery, hold / headphone jack.  Basically the only original parts are the bezel, click wheel, screen, and data ribbons. Have attempted the 3Rs and have also tried to isolate potentially corrupt audio files and remove them, but this did not seem to be the primary cause.  The sync failure consistently happens at just under a 1000 songs (5.4gb) and then it starts to error (-69) any song after that.  Your advise would be enthusiastically received.

I have to manually reset the iPod for the iTunes to run correctly, but then my music isn't added and iTunes tells me I have to restore the iPod... I've done this numerous times only to no avail... Someone please help!!!

  • IPod temporarily freezing/skipping songs

About a week ago i changed all my songs to play with a custom equalizer setting. The next time I used my iPod, it started freezing up when I started playing a song, or right in the middle of one for 5sec-3min. It happens every few songs. Sometimes it will freeze up and skip over a song or two, and then start playing again. I turned off all of the equalizer settings for every song, but that didn't help. I tried resetting and restoring it, but that didn't help. Sometimes when I turn it on now, I see the "sad iPod" icon, and then I reset it, and it will start working again. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • IPod Touch freezes/skips when unlocking

I searched but really couldnt find anything that helped.
When playing podcasts/music, my touch 2g freezes/skips for ~1 sec when I press a button to unlock the screen/move the slider.
    Any fix for this?

    Just the standard fixes:
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
      - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.

  • Ipod not syncing freezes

ipod 80gb classic freezes itunes after transferring a fraction of my music, then ipod says it has no music. Freezes itunes and can not get back

I'm not sure that if this is exactly the same problem you're having but it sounds similiar...
I have just purchased a new ipod classic 160, and have attempted to sync it with my itunes 9.1 library. It managed to sync about 3 Gb and then an error message came up saying "Attempting to copy to the disk "iPod" failed. The disk could not be read from or written to." I then tried manually transferring the music and was successful with some of the music, but with other tracks the same error message came up. I performed a restore on the iPod, as I initially formatted it on a PC, not my Mac, and thought this might be the problem. Unfortunately this didn't fix it. As far as I can see there is no pattern to the tracks that it won't load on (well not to my eyes anyway). I would be grateful for any suggestions as I'm off traveling in a few days time without my laptop and can't imagine myself without my music collection!

  • IPod and iTunes freezes while uploading music

So a couple of weeks ago, I was using my 40Gb iPod when suddenly it froze. I reset it but when I tried to play another song, it skipped all of them as if they weren't there. I had lost my entire library in an instant. Once I got back to my computer (Powerbook) I managed to restore it. During this the folder with the exclamation mark and the run-click-run-click problems showed up. Now after successfully restoring it, I can't get my music back on it. For some reason at various points in uploading songs (whether it be after 20 songs or 2000) both my iTunes and iPod freezes. I normally reset it which causes the "improper device removal" sign to come up. Then when I plug it back into my computer I get the message that iTunes can't recognize the information on my iPod and that I need to restore it again. However sometimes it takes 3 or 4 times of it freezing during uploading to get that message. Either way, I can't get my library of music back onto my iPod without it freezing. I never see the folder with exclamation mark and the music that I do managed to get on there works perfectly fine.
Does anyone have a clue what is wrong with my iPod and is there anyway to fix it?

I tried the update with no success. Here's another update after actually trying to use my iPod:
When I have it just plugged into headphones or speakers half of the songs cut off in the middle, just a little bit off near the end. Some don't work at all. Plus my iPod is very slow while moving through the menus.
When I have it plugged into the Monster FM transmitter, I really can't get anything to work. It freezes on almost every song. The most I can get a song to play is about 16 seconds before it skips over to the next.
This seems just seems really messed up but it seems to be a software problem. Any ideas?

  • I have a 5th gen ipod nano that freezes when playing songs. i can't turn off, change songs, turn volume down. song stays stuck and nothing works at all. any ideas??

i have a 5th gen ipod nano that freezes when playing songs. i can't skip, turn down volume, turn ipod off. it simply screeches as the song is stuck at a specific point. any suggestions?

You have 2 options:  #1 - iPod Repair Tutorials
#2 - take the iPod Nano to an Apple store or an AASP.  Whichever is more convenient for you.

  • Itunes locking up when ipod is connected.  Firewall problem?

Hi folks. For years I have been running itunes, an ipod touch and NOD32 firewall with no problems at all. But a couple of days ago I connected up my ipod and there is a problem.
itunes launches as you would expect, but it immediately hangs. After a few minutes, it will free up, but the ipod is not visible in itunes. I can see it in Windows and the USB driver is working fine.
If I disconnect the ipod whilst itunes is "stuck", then itunes immediately starts responding properly. So it looks very much like this freezing is caused by itunes hanging on the ipod.
Here's the wierd thing: I have found that if I disable my firewall, the problem goes away. i.e. everything works fine if the firewall is disabled. No lockups and itunes can see the ipod and will happily sync with it.
I really don't see how the firewall can be the culprit though. I didn't think firewalls applied to USB connections??!
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling itunes and it makes no difference. I have also upgraded from 9.1 to 9.2 and that didn't fix it either.
Any ideas what's going on (And how to fix it?)
    Thanks

After re-installing iTunes, and doing a full restore on my iPod, I have determined that it was some album cover art that seemed to be causing the problem. The iPod would start to sync, and then hang on one song. Deleted that song, and it synced a little more, and got hung up again on another song from the same album.
I deleted the entire album from my iTunes library, and the iPod synced just fine. I re-ripped the CD in question, this time with out adding ablum cover art, and it worked perfectly.
Now I wonder why iTunes is getting stuck on certian album cover art. The CD in question is Eric Clapton's "Crossroads". iTunes was unable to retreive the album cover art when I ripped the CD [perhaps because iTunes has it listed as "Crossroads (Box Set)"], so I just scanned the cover of the CD and added it that way. I have done this with other CDs, and had no problems what so ever. Anyone have any clue as to why this would happen?

  • HELP...iPod nano (first generation) skipping songs, then....frozen

I need some advice. I have a 1st generation nano, (I also use it with the Nike + if that matters), it was skipping songs, and just playing whatever it wanted, so I just restored it, and now it is froze on the screen "language". I have also tried to reset it by holding down the centre and menu button. Diagnostics tells me "iPod connection status" is the problem, now it is not coming up or being recognized by my itunes. I am running all of the current software. Is it time for a new iPod?

  • My 2 month old Iphone is losing it's mind.  It's randomly turning on Voice Command and calling people or turning on the IPod.  It freezes up and won't let me go back to the home screen.

My 2 month old IPhone started randomly turning on Voice Command and calls people and turns on the IPod.  It freezes up and won't let me push the home button.  Any suggestions?

OK, I reset it several times and it worked fine all day yesterday.  Today when I turned on the bluetooth it went back to the same problem.  Voice Control comes on and the home button won't work at all.  I have gone through the reset many times and it isn't working.  How do I restore firmware as you suggested?

  • IPod Classic keeps freezing...what do I do?

My iPod Classic keeps freezing. It still plays music, but then the screen freezes and won't let me command the device until the backlight switches off. I noticed it's got a bit worse since I bought 'Bush' iPod speakers to play my music out loud through my iPod. What do I do? It's getting annoying.

    Hi Candyfornia,
I think you must restore your iPod (with iTunes) to solve your problem...

  • Nano skipping problem solved? (songs skipping while playing)

Well, not "solved" per se, but there does seem to be some concensus on the cause of these skips...
True, the nano is solid-state storage, and will not skip due to the same root causes that hard drive models might skip.
HOWEVER, that does not mean that the nano does not skip due to other reasons.
People on this forum, as well as members of iLounge have reported skipping problems. Concensus is that it is the nano's incompatibility with LAME encoded MP3s (some say that it's only VBR, yet some say it is also with CBR tracks).
The symptoms are tracks that skip on the nano, but play perfectly fine in iTunes (or any other player for that matter). I've heard that the mini also has this problem, but I cannot confirm... I can confirm that it happens often on my nano...
I have a very large collection of LAME encoded MP3s, so re-encoding is not a reasonable option...
If you are experiencing these issues, please report them to Apple... We need a firmware fix for this...
Question: Does anyone know if Apple is already aware of this issue, and plans to fix it in the next firmware update?

If it's skipping in iTunes and your iPod, then it is likely you have a bad file...
While there is probably a way of knowing what encoder was used to encode a file, I don't know that off hand...
I know my files are all LAME encoded because I ripped them using LAME...

plz i need help....my ipod touch still freezing even after restoring it...plz send me email to [email protected]

If you did not restore to factory defaults/new iPod do that. If yuo are still having problem then an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order. You likely have a hardware problem.
