IPod 5 sound not working?
Hi there!
I have an iPod touch 5th generation, and just noticed that the sound from the speakers wasn't working. If I try to turn up the sound, the headphones symbol appears, even though I don't have them plugged in. I noticed the sound only does work from the headphones, but not speakers. I do believe this could be from my iPod making contact with some snow when I accidentally dropped it earlier, although it wasn't fully submerged in deep snow, but still enough to get wet I suppose. So far I've tried restarting it where I hold down the lock and home button for a few seconds, shutting it down and then starting it back up, and plugging in/out the headphones. None of these seemed to work though.
Right now I have it shut down, sitting in a sealed Ziploc bag, the bottom half in rice, hoping to drain any liquid overnight (12-15 hours).
If anyone has suggestions of a different way this could have happened, or what to do, it would be very appreciated
Also - is the rice thing a good way to help this? Thank you very much for your time!!
Hey NeonZebraStripes,
Thanks for the question, and great troubleshooting so far. It may be that there are debris in the headset jack or lightning connector of your device. The following resource provides the best steps to troubleshoot this issue, including steps to clear the debris:

Help!! iPod sound not working!
Help!! My iPod touch 5th generations sound is not working! Whenever I try to watch a video or listen to my music, it says its connected to headphones even when it's not! It makes No noise whatsoever, Not even for Siri, Or when I'm typing. Should I take this to the Apple store, or can I fix this myself? Thanks! Amelia
- Try cleaning out/blowing out the headphone jack. Try inserting/removing the plug a dozen times or so.
Try the following to rule out a software problem
- Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
- Restore from backup
- Restore to factory settings/new iPod.
- Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. Seems you have a bad headphone jack.
Apple Retail Store - Genius Bar
If not under warranty Apple will exchange your iPod for a refurbished one for this price. They do not fix yours.
Apple - iPod Repair price
A third-party place like the following will replace the jack for less. Google for more.
iPhone Repair, Service & Parts: iPod Touch, iPad, MacBook Pro Screens
Replace the jack yourself

IPod (5G) and iPod (Classic) Not Working
_*iPod 5G:*_
I bought the iPod 5G 2-3years back ago. It was working all fine. Few months back I accidentally dropped the iPod. After this, the iPod was not working at all. None of the buttons works. But i am still able to put in on HOLD or even restart/put to disk mode. I am using it as a 80gb External Hard Drive.
*iPod Classic (120GB):*
I bought this iPod from Bangkok in December 2008. Later, in March, used to restart by itself and freeze suddenly when a track is being played. I had some tracks on it then. Whenever i try to play any track it showed the time 00:00 and started to play that particular track after this 'click' sort of sound from the inside, possibly from the hard drive. It even freezes during the RESTART process. So I had to bring it to a stable condition by restarting it during it is being restarted. My computer is not able to identify it. I have tried to restore it a couple of times now. Sometimes, I am able to get through the RESTORE process but most of the time my mac/ipod freeze together and wont come back to normal until and unless the usb wire is pulled out forcefully. Well, whenever iTunes recognizes it, I try to sync music. I have about 200 tracks in this one playlist. Whenever i try to sync it, the ipod freezes together with my mac. The sync process stops without copying all the tracks to my ipod. After that the screen goes black and then comes back with a dull APPLE logo displayed.
+Information on iPod Shuffle:+
My dad is going to Bangkok tomorrow. I asked him to get me a Shuffle. The new one that talks. I use the ipod mainly in my car (using the aux). There are no buttons on the Shuffle as everything in situated in cable of the ear phones. How am i going to use the controls if my connect the AUX (from my car's stereo) to my iPod? I wont be able to change tracks, pause or even shut down the ipod. Another thing is that whenever the ear phone plug is disconnected from the ipod, while it is playing a track, the track gets automatically paused.
This is very long, consumed a lot of time for you to read/for me to write. I guess making it longer would help me to kill time as I am running a ZERO OUT format on the 2nd ipod I own. :P
Thank You,
Samin

I posted this on a Microsoft Answers Forum but none of the techs or people reading have been able to help so far. I'm dying to get to the bottom of this:
Here is my computer:
MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum
AMD Athlon 64 3000+
2GB RAM
XFX GEFORCE 6600 GT 128MB DDR3 DUAL DVI & TV OUT (PCI-E)
200GB WD SATA HDD
500GB WD HDD in external enclosure via USB2
NEC ND-3520A 16X DVD±RW Dual Layer DVD Burner
LG CD Burner
I've been using Vista Home Premium successfully for some time. Recently, not too long after I did a clean wipe of my OS, my audio would stop working. The way it would happen is that everything would work fine until I started iTunes or another audio application and when I would hit play, things would lock up.
Upon inspection of my system resources, I'm noticing that the audio platform for Vista, via the audiodg.exe, is using close to 100% of my CPU resources, even when the computer is making no sound at all.
I've had a Sound Blaster Live! card in my computer for some time but I was not using it; I use the Realtek AC'97 audio drivers that are on my motherboard instead. I thought that the conflict may be the computer wanting to recognize my Sound Blaster, so I took it out of my computer but the problem seems to be worse.
Are there any BIOS setting that need to be adjusted for my sound to start working again?
I'm very reliant on the audio processing power of my computer (I'm in the radio industry, part-time) and this is a huge drag on my productivity.
Any tips would be much appreciated.
REPLY #1:
Thank you for using Microsoft Answers forum. I suggest going to the manufacture of your sound card and download the latest drivers and install them.
MY RESPONSE:
Good suggestion. The problem is this:
I am running on-board audio. I have an MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum motherboard which runs "Realtek ALC Series AC97 Audio Driver" and there is no version for Vista. They have a version for Windows 2K/XP and one for Windows XP 64bit.
Should I use on of those and if not, then what?
UPDATE (from me):
I took a chance and found a Realtek AC'97 driver for Vista.
http://drivers.softpedia.com/progDownload/Realtek-AC-97-Audio-Codec-Driver-Vista-6183-Beta-Download-18114.html
I went to install it and the install hung. So, I closed one of the install windows and then the InstallShield app continued like it was working. So, I hit "Restart my computer". Well, the reboot hung too. So, I reset the PC manually.
When the computer came back up, the sound worked. Hard to tell if this will fix it for good but it's promising. Chaotic. Unpredictable. Annoying.
REPLY #2:
Before you tried updating drivers, did you try rebooting 1st?
I'm just trying to determine if rebooting your system is what resolved the issue - thank you
UPDATE II (from me):
My computer is behaving the same way it was before. AUDIODG.EXE taking up 80-100% of my CPU and the sound not working.
Any other ideas?Small update: Despite my intelligence, good looks and vast experience I use Google sometimes. To my surprise this file turns out to be a Windows one. Here is someone who is much happier, and since it is some way in my line of thinking I'll quote it, but you might take my previous advice as well:
http://forums.techarena.in/windows-vista-performance/1012315.htm
"- Open up msconfig.exe > Manage startup programs.
- Disable ALL Realtek entries
- Close msconfig.exe
- Right-click on the speaker icon > Audio devices > Speakers (properties)
- Go to the enhancements tab
- Check the box to disable all audio enhancements
- Close the menu
- Right-click on the speaker icon > Recording devices
- Disable all your microphones (yeah..., the actual problem seems to come
from voice inputs rendering..)
- Close the menu
- Restart your computer" -
My daughter is away at camp and ipod is not working and says it needs to be connected to itunes. She does not have her laptop with her. Can she sync to her itunes on someone else's mac?
Yes, when she plugs it in to another person's mac, tell it transfer purchases, then authorize the computer by going to store, and click authroize computer. If the iPod is in recovery mode
Then I don't think she can have her music apps etc. on there after she plugs it into the computer. If it just needs a charge
When iTunes opens on the computer, quit it, and do not let the iPod sync with the computer, just answer no or ignore to any questions asking if you want to sync. -
I tried updating my iPod, and ever since it has not worked at all. If I hold in the lock & home button, it will tell me to plug it into iTunes. Once I do that, it says it will restore but every time, restoring it fails. My iPod is not working at all, and I really have no idea what to do. It is just a black screen, and occasionally the white apple will appear as if it were turning on, but it won't turn on. I just need some suggestions on what to do!
Try:
- iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iPod fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- If still not successful that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

My ipod is not working at all when i plug it into my laptop i get an itunes sign and below that plugin sign also it says new software found however it first asks me to install the software disc which i dont have it with me now can you plz check for the same and reply asap...please thanks.
The link I and Ingo provided included:
1. Remove iTunes and related components from the Control Panel
Use the Control Panel to uninstall iTunes and related software components in the following order and then restart your computer:
iTunes
QuickTime
Apple Software Update
Apple Mobile Device Support
Bonjour
Apple Application Support (iTunes 9 or later)
Important: Uninstalling these components in a different order, or only uninstalling some of these components may have unintended affects.
That is more than quicktime and iTunes. Follow all the instruction in the link for removing and reinstalling the Apple software. -

Sound not working Notebook Envy 15 TS windows 8 and windows 8.1 - problem continues
Hello,
My computer sound stopped again.
I posted previously:

After I`ve followed David`s steps my computer`s sound started working again. But it didn`t last. The sound stopped working just one day after.
I did the procedure again, and it worked. But just for a few hours.
The second time I reinstalled the IDT codec I noticed at the device manager that there is no conflict at the IDT High Definition Audio CODEC.
Instead, the conflict appear in another item of the sound, video and game controllers topic: high definition audio device.
Is there another codec I should reinstall?
Could anyone help me?

LuizAs nobody asked me yet, I`m going to provide some additional information, hoping this can help getting me some help!
