IPod 5G: Disk use on both Macs and PCs.

Greetings,
I have an iMac and iPod. I have selected option "Enable Disk Use" in iTunes.
When using iPod as a external disk on my iMac,all works ok.
Problem is when I plug my iPod into a PC. The PC shows an error message: "The disk in drive F is not formated. Do you want to format it now?". Is this how is supposed to be? How can I use iPod as an external disk when PC doesn't recognize it? Can someone explain this? I know that there are different formating for Macs and PCs, but since I am connecting via USB, it should not be a problem. I am connecting my memory card reader/writer (via USB) to both PCs and Mac and it works. The same is with my digital camera, works on both platforms. And what is even more strange, when I restore iPod on PC and sync in iTunes on PC, with enabling disk use, I can use it on both platforms.
Thank you in advance for replies,
JK

It is because your iPod is formatted in Mac format which Window machines can not read (regardless if you are using USB or not; it does matter).
If you reformatted the iPod for Windows, then you can use it on both systems since Macs can read Windows formatted iPod just fine.

  • External hard drive use with both Mac and Windows

I know that you can't use an iPod (through iTunes) with both Mac and Windows, but can you still use it as an external hard drive with both operating systems?

Yes, if the iPod is in Windows format. Mac OS X can read and write Windows formatted iPods, but Windows can't access Mac formatted disks unless special software is installed.

"Open Disk Utility. Select the drive entry for the external drive (Mfgr.'s ID and drive size) then click on the Partition tab. Select one (1) partition from the drop down menu. Click on the Option button and select the Master Boot Record (MBR) partition scheme then click on OK. Set the format type to MSDOS (FAT32) from the Format drop down menu. Click on the Partition button. Wait for the volume to mount on the Desktop. Select the volume entry (sub-entry of the drive entry) for the volume you just created, click on the Erase tab. Set the format type to MSDOS from the Format drop down menu, click on the Erase button. Wait for volume to mount on Desktop. You're done."

  • What is the best practice for formatting ext drives to be used by both Mac and PC users?

I have scanned what is available in the community about this issue and wondering if anyone has anything new to add.  I need to create backup drives of department files (large photo and video) that both we Mac and the other PC users can access.  The only consistent rec I see is FAT32, but that seems to have size limitations.  Any other suggestions?  Thanks.

The problem with FAT32 is that 4 GB or bigger files can't be stored. In this case, and as you have a Mac OS X version that supports it (10.6.5), you can use exFAT, compatible with Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8 and Mac OS X (10.6.5 and later).
To format a drive with exFAT, do this on a PC. If you do it on a Mac, a PC won't be able to read it. Apart from this, you will be able to store the files you need onto external drives, as exFAT hasn't got the limitations that FAT32 has.
Another option is to use NTFS, but you will need a third-party application on your Mac to be able to write on your external drives

  • How do I reformat a Toshiba Canvio 3.0 Portable Hard Drive for use with both Mac and PC?

I have searched the Toshiba website with no success. I have seen claims that instructions are availble but can not find them. What I want is for my movies and pictures to be readable on both types of machines.

    Use exFAT on the PC.

  • Need to disable Private Window/Private Browsing on our work computers, both mac and pc?

I support both macs and pcs with version 26 of firefox on all machines. I need to disable private window and private browsing, including the keyboard shortcuts.

    Thank you for the info.
I did run across in my searching another way to disable by creating a txt file (userChrome.ccs) with this code, minus the first sentence: (Open the file on any text editor. Copy and paste the following lines after @namespace
/* Hide Private Browsing in App menu and Tools menu */
    #appmenu_privateBrowsing, #privateBrowsingItem {display:none!important;}
/* Hide Sanitize item in App menu and Tools menu */
    #appmenu_sanitizeHistory, #sanitizeSeparator, #sanitizeItem {display:none!important;}
I need to try it on my mac before I implement it on other macs and the pcs. The directory placement area was a little vag so I tried it here.
    I placed the file in: HD/Users/{me}/Library/Application Support/Firefox/chrome
    restarted firefox. Did not work.
Does any one know if the above into is correct and if I placed it in the correct area on the mac?
This is the info I got to place the same file on the pc:
    C:\\Users\\[User]\\AppData\\Roaming\\Mozilla\\Firefox\\Profiles\\[random string].default\\chrome\\
Does anyone know if this is correct? I can not test this until after hours on the pc.
Thank you again! I really tried to do the research before I posted the question.

  • Using iPod as a hard drive between Mac and PC

I'd like to use my Mac-formatted iPod to back up some personal files om my work PC laptop, and then transfer them to my Mac at home. I need to repeat this process every month or so.
I've enabled my iPod for disk use, but the PC wants to reformat in order to allow me to use it as a hard drive on the PC. However, all of my iTunes and photos and videos are on my Mac at home, and I'd like to keep the iPod Mac-formatted.
There appears to be some 3rd-party software trials out there, but I'm reluctant to download anything that is potentially sketchy.
    Advice will be greatly appreciated.

Probably the easiest way to use an iPod on both Mac and Windows computers is to format the iPod (using iPod Updater) using the PC. This will force your iPod to use the Windows file system (FAT32) which both the Mac and PC can read from and write to without the help of additional software. Of course then all your software updates for the iPod will have to be done on Windows.
If you need to use a Mac (HFS+) formatted iPod on a Windows PC, you'll need to install some 3rd party software such as XPlay 2.0 (which you can get from MediaFour Software). This will enable your Windows PC to read a Mac-formatted iPod.

  • What type of hard disk should I use if I want to use it on mac and windows?

    Hey Forum,
I am using windows xp on my macbook (snow leopard). I came across some dealers who say that there are hard disks for mac only and for both mac and windows. So, I wanted to buy a hard disk so that I can use it both on mac and windows xp, so what type of hard disk should I use? Must I partition into 2?
or are there any harddisk in the market which is compatible for both mac and windows xp without screwing up the format(NTFS/Mac OS X Journaled)? Pls look into this matter and help me with it.
All of your replies and suggestions is much appreciated.
    Thank you.

Once in a very long while Apple will have customized firmware on drives, and it is possible to find SCSI/SAS or drives that are destined to be used with high end storage controllers.
But that is the exception that makes the rule.
SATA is SATA. Though.... there are now SATA III drives that don't work in XP, or that need a jumper, and Seagate and some drives have managed to deliver firmware that has caused trouble... and Apple has had to issue firmware updates to help compatibility....

  • IPod with both Mac and Windows?

I have a Mac at work and a PC at home. I have my iPod nano set-up with my work computer but I would also like to use it on my home computer. I downloaded the Windows iPod updater, however, it won't let me update....only restore. If I restore, and it loses all my data, can I then hook it back up to my Mac to gain my data back from iTunes. Can I have both Mac and Windows software on my nano at the same time? Or do I have to stick with one system?

Chris, maybe you can help with my situation. It's the opposite from Jilly's. My wife uses her Nano with a PC; I'd like to share some of the stuff on my Mac with her. Can I Restore without losing what she's got already? (And then use the Nano with both computers thereafter...)
    TIA,
    Jeff

  • I have an external drive - WD My Passport FOR MAC. I want to format it to work on both mac and windows. Which format do you think I should use? Will either one cause damage to the files on the hard drive?

I have an external hard drive - WD My Passport FOR MAC. I want to format it to work on both mac and windows. I also want to be able to connect it to my TV and watch movies.
I read up and I think I am supposed to use exFAT or FAT32? I also saw MS-DOS. Which format should I should use? Will any of them cause damage to the files on the hard drive?
My little memory stick uses MS-DOS and it works on both mac and windows.
Please can you just tell me a little about each and suggest which one to use.
I know how to change it once you tell me so don't waste your time writing about changing it.

Will any of them cause damage to the files on the hard drive?
WARNING: FORMATTING A DRIVE ERASES IT COMPLETELY !!
If you need to carry large files (e.g., larger than about 4GB) back and forth, you may need ExFAT. Otherwise MS-DOS works for smaller files.
The Mac can Read, but not write Windows New Technology File System (NTFS) without an add-on program such as Paragon NTFS.

Yes you can. OS X version 10.6.6 and later can read/write exFAT. Windows XP SP3 and later can read/write exFAT. As posted by Radiation Mac, you can do it from Windows or from OS X.
However, I've noticed Windows to be somewhat picky about drives formatted on a Mac. So, if Windows can't read it, try formatting it on the Windows machine, and see how it works on the Mac.

Third-party NTFS software interferes with the Apple NTFS drivers, which control whether you can see the Bootcamp partition in the Startup Disk option. As a test, can you uninstall all third-party NTFS software and check System Preferences -> Startup Disk?

  • I have an existing ipod that I use with my mac. I am trying to connect an additional ipod to it but when I try and register, it just brings up the existing info. I don't want to lose the original info or library - just create new for this device. Pls help

I have an existing ipod that I use with my mac. I am trying to connect an additional ipod to it but when I try and register, it just brings up the existing info. I don't want to lose the original info or library - just create new for this device. Pls help...

We are starting from the beginning like its a new ipod starts out asking language, country, location services, choose a network, and when we get to "setup ipod touch  " there are 3 options 1..setup as new ipod, 2.restore from ipod backup 3 restore from itunes backup and when we hit setup as new ipod and click next it comes up with sign in with apple id or create a free apple id  we clicked create a free apple id....then comes up with bday,1st name last name, use your current email address, get a free icloud email address or change email address and THIS is where we have problems....if we hit change email address it means that sis's stuff goes under his name and moves all her stuff to this older ipod which the brother does not want. sorry this is so long but its the only way I knew to do it.

Thanks so much.  I downloaded Acrobat XI.  It's been "extracting" for the past 30 minutes (even with a fast wi-fi).  Hope this is not a problem.

  • IPod as a hard drive on Mac and PC

    Hi,
I'm going to be helping someone switch from PC to Mac this weekend. I was planning to use my iPod as a hard drive to move their files between the two machines, but I just want to verify something.
If I re-format my iPod to use FAT32 using Disk Utility, it will work as an external hard drive for both Mac and PC--right??
    Thanks,

    Great thank you...
One more question... I'm on a PC at work right now and I don't see any place that I can "turn on sharing" on the hard drive. I googled it and found something that makes me think there should be a "sharing" tab in the properties window when I right click.
Is it possible that because I'm on an IT regulated machine (can't install/delete programs, etc.), this option is disabled? Or am I missing something?
    thanks again for the help!
