I bought my iPod 4 days ago and it was working fine until this morning when I went to turn it on and the screen displayed only the Apple logo and would do nothing else. I attempted to reset it and I plugged it into my computer and still nothing would happen. I've had my ipod 80g for a little over two years, with few incidents, and it's about 50 g full. When I most recently connected it to my computer, it started making these loud whirring and clicking noises and the apple logo is all that shows. I know the ipods can't be expected to last more than a few years (or so I'm told) so my question is what to do. Should I take it into the apple store and have the hard drive totally wiped of all my music, should I try some alternative fix (this strange business card opening the ipod technique, for instance?), or is there something else I should try? Is an ipod in this stage even salvagable? Thanks!

i have the EXACT same problem. Whenever i add new files and try to play them the clicking noise is LOUD and it does not stop for a good 10 seconds nad my IPOD begins to shake...

For a 1G and 2G it can take hours. Make sure it is connected to a charging source otherwise the battery can fully drain before it is done. If still problem
Try:
- iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- Try on another computer
- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

It's not uncommon for it to not work the first time and sometimes, you have to try it a few times. Turn off your antivirus software and your firewall while you are trying to restore the iPad. Enable them again after you restore.
If that still won't work, post back with detailed information as to what exactly does happen as you go through the process.

It worked two days ago fine, for two years, until I installed this newest iTunes update, then for one day it kept on freezing and going to apple logo screen mode, then today it only goes to that screen and wont start up at all.
I've tried the hold down two buttons hard reset, that doesn't help. I've tried disc mode... but iTunes doesn't "see" it even if the computer does.
This is a pristine ipod, never exposed to adverse conditions, never dropped, never wet, and it worked perfectly two days ago.
Can I factory reset it somehow? (considering itunes can't "see" it)

KEEP HOLDING IT it will make a new ding sound I've never heard before. and since its hooked to you laptop already an error message pops up and says apple will need to download something to repair your iPod. I when u see that that when i let reboot buttons go. hit ok on the laptop something downloads for like 20 seconds then the iTunes icon hops around when you open it it has a screen with an iPod classic on it and says "Software version blah blah, iTunes will check for an update on such n such date" AND FINALLY there's a "Restore" button. click that and you will be back to square one with your iPod. Renaming , adding all the music on it, but it will work again, finally. "
I had to do it twice, because my mac froze the first time, but its recognized it now and is downloading the software as we speak...
Now I've clicked the restore button and it's restoring... I'll post again if its a success, otherwise assume failure.

Same here. I tried to update my iPhone 5S and iPad 4 to 7.1 but iTunes wiped out them. This thing already happened for iOS 7.0.6 update. What happened to Apple? I am really curious whether Apple is aware of this problem.

Method 1: i have tried almost everything, 'hosts' file editing (adding and deleting that ip gs.apple.com thing)
Method 2: redsnow, snowbreeze,ireb (custom ispw and fetching thing)...

i have tried all these methods n above which i mentioned before....
- Powering off and then back on your router.
- iTunes for Windows: iTunes cannot contact the iPhone, iPad, or iPod software update server
- Change the DNS to either Google's or Open DNS servers

OpenDNS IP Addresses
- For one user uninstalling/reinstalling iTunes resolved the problem
- Try on another computer/network
- Wait if it is an Apple problem
in the end i went ot market n paid him 1.94$ and he restored it to 6.1.5... and said apple has closed other ios updation except 6.1.5 ...but still thank u soo much learned some new stuff from u...

IPod shows apple logo and nothing else

I managed to put it on disk mode, and iTunes actually "saw" it. I even uploaded some tracks, everything is ok supposedly but when I reset it, it shows the apple logo and won't do anything else after that. All you see is the logo.
That was the case even before I upload any of the tracks.

You need to put it back into disk mode, connect it to the computer, and restore it with the ipod updater. The ipods software is not installed correctly. Here is a link addressing your exact issue. My ipod is stuck on the appel logo and when i conect it to my computer it just keeps it on but the computer dosent even notice that its plugegd in nothign happens itunes and my computer show that nothigns plugged in.the only ay to turn on is to connect to computer and when i unplug it just stays on apple logo until it dies.

Mine is doing the same thing. I synced the ipod with the library playlist and once it finished syncing it said 'sync completed' and it looked like it was restarting itself but now it's just frozen on the apple logo. I have a MacBook (Late 2008 edition) having Mac OS X 10.6.8 SnowLeopard OS installed (2 X 512GB RAM, 160 HDD). I copied some mp3 into iTunes library and soon the process got stucked. MacBook was not accepting any command/it seemed to got hanged. Carelessly, I switched the MacBook OFF by pressing the Power button. Now, when it began to boot again, all I hear was some clicking sound from the MacBook (seems HardDrive failure because the sounds seems to be from HardDrive). After few seconds, It showed flashing folder with question mark and it wont go beyond that.
Steps I tried:
1. Resetting NVRAM, PVRAM and SMC.
2. Booting in safe mode.
3. To boot from install DVD (Mac OS X 10.6.3 SnowLeopard).
4. Holding down 'option' button while booting. It shows the "Mac OS X Install DVD" icon but as I click it and press return, it again shows Apple logo with spinning wheel and little later it shows prohibitory sign with spinning wheel. This will now remain for ever and ever.
5. I bought a new 500 GB HardDrive and replaced the old one with this. Now trying to boot with DVD (Mac OS X 10.6.3 SnowLeopard) it again hows Apple logo with spinning wheel and little later it shows prohibitory sign with spinning wheel. This will remain for ever.
Any suggestions to overcome this problem will be highly appreciated and I'll be very grateful for all your help.

Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like your MacBook has a startup issue and you aren't able to reinstall Mac OS X on a new hard disk. The article linked below has a lot of great information and suggestions that will resolve most issues like the one you described.
