IPod 5g showing as iPod 3G in iTunes 7
At first I couldn't get iTunes to recognize my iPod so I could restore it. I plugged it in to a iBook and was finally able to restore it. But now when I plug it in, it shows up as a 5G iPod on my desktop (with the nice 5G icon, but as a 3G iPod on my iTunes! Also, there is no tab for Photos or Videos, the update and restore tabs are not lit, AND software version and serial number are stated as N/A. I can put my music on my iPod but not Photos, Videos, Art Covers etc... The iPod drawing is not the one I used to have, it looks like a 3G iPod.
On another computer with my iPod I can have it recognised, but all 5 or 5.5 G ipods have this problem with my iTunes.
Anyone else had this problem and/or fix? Thanks!

I can't sync music already on my computer to my ipod touch; the ipod shows up under Devices in itunes but does not show buttons (Summary etc.) when I click on it. I've read through all the Help tutorials but none of them say what to do if the sync options don't pop up when you highlight the device. This is correct. It will not show in finder. It is not an external storage device.
The music sync is one way - computer to ipod. The only exception is itunes purchases. Open itunes connect ipod, do not sync, click File>Transfer Purchases -
IPod Nano isn't showing up at all in iTunes.
My ipod hasn't been showing up at all in itunes. I've tried it on a few different computers including the one I got all my music off of in the past but all it does is charges like it's hooked up to a wall charger.

I can't open my iPod library in iTunes, the app doesn't show the device at all, no error message, nothing, but windows 8 opens it like it would a flash drive. It has worked for me before just fine and both have the most updated software versions. HELP PLEASE!

I've read through several discussions and I've seen a lot of similar issues but none that were quite like mine. Every time I plug my 3rd gen. iPod nano in it shows it connected on the iPod screen and iTunes opens up but the device does not show up in iTunes. The icon on the iPod shows connected and gives the arrows circling showing syncing even though it still says connected. But it won’t show up in iTunes. It shows up on my windows computer but I can’t click it or make it do anything. It keeps saying “You need to format the disk before you can do anything.” And when I hit cancel it beeps and says "Location not available. Dara error (cyclic redundancy check)." As if I know what that means!! And I have 800 songs on it but they aren’t all on my computer and some are on my parents’ computer but I can’t get to that one. It shows it is a “FAT32” which I have no clue what that means but I’ve never noticed that before.
Windows "can't access the disk" and I don't know why. It gives me that notification if I try to check the drive or disk or device for problems. And if you click it on Windows it pops up a screen with formatting things (which I don't know anything about). And then it closes and says that it CANNOT format the device.
The iPod works almost okay when it isn’t plugged in, but I’ve noticed that half my songs won’t play. You click on it and it plays the next one in the album. And it isn’t always the first song in an album but random songs. And songs I listen to a lot. You can’t go back (you can only go forward and you can’t skip over the ‘missing’ song) or even click to select those songs. But other songs play normal, just not half of them that are on the iPod but all of a sudden no longer work. And I don’t know why. I have another 3rd gen. iPod nano that doesn’t have ANY of these problems. It hooks up, it doesn’t need formatting, and all its songs play. I don’t know what is wrong or what to do. I’ve tried re-downloading iTunes and everything. I don’t want to have to reset my iPod and lose everything.
I’ve tried locating the device in iTunes and it shows the iPod but it gives this weird symbol and I can’t select it. It’s like a white box with a box that is outlined in blue with six random icons in the middle. I’ve seen it before and it always means something is wrong or a file (which is where I have seen it before) is corrupted. And like I said I have a second iPod nano of the same generation and it does not give this weird symbol. Plus it connects just fine. It’s this one iPod.
I don’t understand what is going on. It worked just fine and then all of a sudden I noticed songs wouldn’t play so I went to plug it into iTunes and nothing has worked. I’ve searched discussions and none of the tips help. But I want my songs to play again and I want my iPod back.Hey briannagrace96,

Ipod does not show up in Windows or Itunes! tried everything!
Here is the problem:
This is a new problem. Ipod worked fine on this computer until recently.
Ipod 5th gen does not show up in My Computer or Itunes.
It seems that it happend after I installed the latest update to Itunes.
What is happening:
When Ipod is plugged into my USB (the same one I always used before) it never shows up in my computer or itunes and always says "Do Not Disconnect" never stops!
What have I tried:
I plugged it into my friends laptop! It worked fine. Window found it.
I then used updater on it
I did the 5 r's over and over again. Nothing
I have reinstalled Itunes and tried that a few times
I tried different USB ports, nothing
I tried putting other items in my USBs and they work fine
IPOD just refusses to be seen on this computer again.

Sure enough even though it did not show up as a drive letter the device manager said is was installed and working.
So I deleted the device out of device manager. Restarted and plugged it in. Although I go some weird error. It found the IPOD and now Itunes sees it.
I believe that killing the process would have done the same thing as you stated.

When I went to update my iPod touch on iTunes, it said unable to update then the iPod shutdown and no longer showed connected in iTunes. I have tried holding down both buttons for up to 3 mins with no luck turning it on, even after a full charge. Help?

Just disconnecting it without ejecting should not cause permanent damage. It may cause data corruption, if iTunes was in the process of syncing at the time. But iTunes should still see the shuffle and (maybe) tell you to Restore it.
Is it possible that the "accident" damaged the USB cable?
Make sure you have done this on the shuffle since the problem occurred

And you should also shut down (power off) the computer, if you have not already.
Have you tried more than one USB port on the computer (not a hub if you use one)? You can also try it with all other USB devices disconnected, except for standard keyboard and mouse (if normally used).
If those things do not help, what version of Windows do you use? -
My ipod touch 4g does not show in Windows 7 or itunes, I've removed and reinstalled Itunes. I've done a factory default, and I've changed out cables. The ipod shows connected but does not show.
Did you remove and reinstall all the Apple software by:
Removing and reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows Vista or Windows 7
Run this to see if it helps determine the cause

Last, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

I have a 5th gen ipod and recently all of my video podcasts stopped showing up in my ipod. They still show up and play in itunes, just not in my video podcast list on my ipod. All of the podcasts are Quicktime Large. For some reason my ipod has stopped supporting Quicktime Large. Now I've had to redownload every video podcast as Quicktime Small.
Anyone have any ideas whether this is from the the software version 1.3 and if they'll fix it in the next update?I'm having same problem, but QT Small videos are also not getting synced.

Automatically Syncing my 3rd Gen IPod Touch, All my music and videos show in the device on iTunes, but when I look at the device itself, it say no content. Can someone help? The Apps seem to sync fine, just not the music, videos, podcasts, or audiobooks.
Change your iCloud ID password: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5624. After doing so, go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account, then sign back in with the new password.

5th Gen iPod seen in iTunes, shows sync complete within seconds but nothing actually gets transferred. iTunes64 bit on new laptop. Has synced successfully for a couple weeks.
This is my spouse's device and she is away for awhile. Is she stuck or try a restore? Don't want to do that until last resort in case ipod will not load afterwards.mine used to freeze randomly during songs and i re-set it twice and that worked.

Ipod shows in Windows, not in iTunes - it used to work!
I've tried everything I could find on the site to remedy this - resetting ipod when connected and when not connected, removing everything itunes and ipod related & reinstalling, changing iPod's drive letter, etc.
The problem started when our sysadmin migrated us to the domain. I now get an explorer window showing the iPod contents, but iTunes says: "The software required for communicating with the iPod is not installed correctly." When I start iTunes and then attach the iPod I get this message when the explorer window pops up. What else can I do to debug this?but I can't delete them. I get the message "Cannot open IPodService.iPodManager: Error while opening key.". I wrote a little program to try to open or delete these keys, and I get error 5 - Access denied.
good lord. if you're capable of doing that, you're way better with registries than i am. but i might be able to keep pumping observation and experience from reports here on the forums at you, that might be helpful with this.
i've seen one report of someone not being able to open one of those keys, but i wasn't able to follow up on it. but i've had some more experience with "sticky" keys in some threads dealling with recalcitrant installation errors. (typically 1406s and 1402s.) let's try to transfer some of those techniques over to this situation.
I don't see any iPod apps or services running. What could be locking these registry entries?
okay, although iPodService.exe is our main process/service relevant to the ipod, iTunesHelper.exe is also associated with iPod connections:

so lets try locking that one down too in MSCONFIG prior to any attempts at registry edits:

other possibilities ... (bit of a long shot since you tried a registry edit in safe mode with no joy) i've seen people be unable to edit registry keys on some PCs if they have an antivirus application running at the same time (which makes a perverse sort of sense). other applications might also be implicated in that sort of behavior. so prior to any registry edits, let's try shutting down all background applications (including TSRs) prior to the edit. try the techniques from this InstallShield document:

(if you can get this to allow the reg edits, try it prior to the reinstall attempt too. if it's blocking your regedits, it will probably block the registry key modifications during the install too.)
... and we'd better check on malware too. some malware does lock down registries in unusual ways (to prevent removal, i guess, but an incidental horking of some registry keys isn't out of the question.)
let's get some fresh definitions onto your PC and check for viruses and spyware. you might want to also try an "online" scan with your security software provider to try to cover the possibilities where the security software on the PC has been compromised. (or if your tech support has some advanced "off-PC" antimalware techniques, i'd try throwing those at the beast.

30G video iPod won't show on desktop or in iTunes

30G Video iPod, connected by USB cable -- oh so frustrated! Big trip coming up and can't put any of my audible books on my iPod!
This seems to have started after I upgraded iTunes to 7.0, is this source of my problem?

Things I've tried:
Reset iPod, (can't restore the iPod, since no application or utility will recognize it), did all upgrades to iTunes, unplugged all usb ports, repaired all permissions, tried plugging it into another Mac G5 and it wouldn't show up there either.
It plugs into my power source from the electrical outlet and is fully charged, and plugs into my car radio via a monster cable just fine, just won't connect to a computer.

Song shows up in playlist on iTunes, but not on the iPod Touch
So I bought a song from iTunes on my iPod Touch, and so it shows up on the "Purchased" playlist, and I can listen to it. So, I sync up to my PC (or my wife's MacBook Pro, doesn't matter) and using iTunes, I add the song to a playlist of my current favorites. I then sync the iPod. In iTunes, it shows the song as part of the playlist, and shows that there are 24 songs in it. But when I unhook the iPod and look at that exact same playlist, the new song does not show up, and it says that there are 23 songs in the playlist.
I have already tried deleting the playlist, creating a whole new one, and I can put any song I want in there, except for this one. ??? Anyone heard of this before?If the song is in iTunes, and it is in a playlist that you auto-sync your Touch to, then the only things that might cause this problem are:
1- Is this new song un-checked in iTunes? If your Touch is set to sync only checked items that would prevent it from syncing. If that's the case, just enable the checkmark next to the new song and re-sync.
2- Is this playlist a smart playlist that is forced to be limited in size? If so, there is a bug with the 3.1.x OS such that smart playlists that are limited in size will have different contents (and sorted differently) when you compare the playlist on iTunes vs. on the Touch. The solution in this case is to disable Live Updating in the smart playlist definition, then the two versions of the playlist will agree.
3- Is the new song tagged as "Skip when Shuffling"? If so, and if your Touch is in shuffle mode, then the song count in the playlist will not include songs that are designated to be skipped.
See if any of those three things are what is going on. If not, then perhaps you need to reset or restore your Touch, but I doubt that.
