IPod 5G shows up as iPod 3G on iTunes 7

I've spent all day trying to fix my iPod/iTunes - 8 hours!!!! (Shouldn't Apple pay me for my time.....) At first I couldn't get iTunes to recognize my iPod so I could restore it. I plugged it in to a MacBook Pro and was finally able to restore it. But now when I plug it in, it shows up as a 5G iPod on my desktop, but as a 3G iPod on my iTunes!!!! What the heck?!?!?!? Also, there is no tab for Photos or Videos, the update and restore tabs are not lit, AND software version and serial number are stated as N/A. Anyone else had this problem and/or fix? Thanks!

I have the exact same problem.
I wish someone could help me, I've tried everything. I've deleted preference files, reinstalled itunes etc...
Any other piece of advice would be great!

Well, I have an iPod Classic, it gave me the error -1436 error and would not restore on iTunes.
I did the following:
My Boss (@work) has a fairly old iBook but it has OS-X, so I decided to give it a try and connected my iPod to it.
The system showed a window telling me that the disk is not MAC formated and needs to be validated prior further action. Snce it is a Mac product, I thought "yeah, go ahead".
It then opens the disk manager utility for the Mac and showed the disk. It's window has some tabs, one is to verify the disk, so I verified it. Guess what, it had some invalid clusters.
Then I formatted the iPod to OS-X Plus file system (next tab to the right). After formating the iPod, I "ejected" the iPod and reconnected to my PC. The Windows iTunes found an iPod with Mac file system and asked me to restore it. As I clicked on the "restore" button, I crossed my fingers as this was the last resource I have.
Finally, after the file extraction was done, it began to restore the iPod!!
I'm so happy about being able to restore the iPod that I decided to share with all you guys this solution as it is the most usefull, in my opinion.
Hope you can find someone with an iBook or a desktop Mac, so you can fix yours.

the ipod doesnt actually work correctly i just asked a question about it and i was going to try to completely restore the ipod but it doesnt show up on itunes or on "my computer". here is my question i recently asked if it helps..
i got a 30 gb ipod video from someone because they cant get it to work so i bought a charger and plugged it into the computer. it said very low battery please wait right at first and had a little circle thing that showed it was loading. now it will only show an apple sign on the screen no matter what i had it plugged in over night i tried reseting it but it just went right back to showing the apple sign is there anything else i can do or why is it doing this?

I recently purchased a new 120 GB ipod classic to replace my original 30 GB ipod video. My computer failed to recognize my new hardware and I receive the following error message when running diagnostics in an attempt to locate the "new" 120 GB ipod.

IPod not showing up on desktop nor in iTunes

My iPod doesn't seem to register on the desktop anymore. It was working fine until last night. The iPod screen would say that it's connecting and tell me not to disconnect. Then, it would go dark and you'd see the Apple logo, as if it were resetting itself. I've tried resetting it, but it appears to do the same thing after I've plugged it in again. Can I restore the iPod without plugging it in? Perhaps there's a corrupt file / mp3 on the iPod? How do I erase the iPod without plugging it in?

I was wondering if anyone was able to help you with your iPod problem. I'm having some of the same problems with the added "excitement" of a Do Not Disconnect showing on my iPod but nothing showing my iPod either on the desktop or in iTunes. I don't know what to do. I can't even restore it to factory settings because it doesn't show up anywhere. Was hoping you got some help and could share it.

My iPod mini (It's the older version of iPod mini in the darker colors) recently stopped showing up on my iMac and iTunes. It charges, but since it doesn't show up, I can't add music or anything.
I already looked at the support page Apple has for this problem and I tried everything and nothing helped me. The only thing I didn't try was resetting my iPod, which I don't think will work because not only does my iPod not show up, but neither does my sister's and my mom's.
My sister has the same model of iPod mini as mine, and my mom has the slightly newer mini (with the brighter colors).
Does anyone have any suggestions how I can fix this problem? I gave up on it for awhile, but now I really need it resolved. Thank you in advance.

It sounds like the port or cable is having a problem. First try a different cable.
If the cable doesn't fix things then try resetting the PMU (Power Management Unit) then see if the iPod will show up.

My iPod Touch shows USB and arrow pointing to iTunes

It's a newer generation that I bought a while back, but i tried to system restore so my little brother couldn't access my vital applications that i had installed previously.
Whilst plugged in, it said that a system update and iTunes update was required. However, neither fully finished. Instead, the iPod touch shows the generic USB cord with an arrow pointing toward the iTunes symbol.
Is there anything that i can do without having to pay for it to be fixed???

First get the latest version (10.6.3 ) of iTunes to install on your computer. See the following if necessary:

Ipod nano shows in my computer but not ITunes

I have a windows xp and I have some Ipod 4s that i want to reset them and sell them. Whenever I connect either of the 3 of them, they all go on a dim screen that says 'do not dissconnect' and I can't do anything on them. 1. Update iTunes to the latest version. Plug in your iPod. If iTunes still can't recognize it, then in iTunes in the top left corner click help> run diagnostics. On the box that comes up, check the last two things. Click next and it should identify your iPod.
2. Click on your windows start menu. Type in "services". Click on it and when it pops up, on the bottom of it click on "standard". Now Scroll down to find "Apple Mobile Device" Right click it when you see it and click on "Start". When it has started, close iTunes and replug in your iPod and it should show up.
3. Check the USB cable
4. Verify that Apple Mobile Device Support is installed
5. Restart the Apple Mobile Device Service and verify that the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is installed.
6. If you just want to add some photos, songs and movies from computer to your devices, you can use an iTunes alternative to do the job

I have a fifth gen ipod, worked fine for a little over a year. Now, it will still play music, but i cant synch it with itunes. it does not show up on my computer or in itunes, but when i plug it in, my computer beeps, signifying that something has been plugged in. i plugged in my sisters mini and it worked just like it should. i have tried all the tips on apples website, but to no avail.
Itunes did recognize the ipod once and said it was corrupt and i should restore it. I tried to do so but got an error message, something about files not available.

I got a 30 gb video iPod this past Christmas and have had no problems until the other day. Now when I plug it in it doesn't show up on my Mac or in iTunes. It does show up in the System Profiler. The only success I've had is with restoring my iPod, but then of course I have to wait an hour for everything to get put back on there. Does anyone have a solution?

It's only the iPod video and iPod nano that cannot be synced over Firewire. They can be both charged and synced with USB.
If you're having trouble with the iPod being recognized after the latest update, try the following.
Windows users
Force the iPod into disk mode

Click Start > Run
Type compmgmt.msc
Click on "Disk Management"
Let the computer go through its connection process
Find the iPod's volume
Right click on iPod and click on Format
Set the format to FAT32
Leave the rest of the settings on their defaults
Do not perform a quickformat
Start the format
When it's done, your iPod should appear in iTunes, although it is recommended that you restore the iPod after formatting it. It's not recommended to do this on a 60GB iPod
Mac users
Open your Finder
Go to Macintosh HD
Go to Applications
Go to Utilities
Go to Disk Utility
Select your iPod's volume in the left-hand column
Click on the "erase" tab
Volume Format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
Uncheck "install Mac OS 9 driver)
Click the erase button
It's recommended that you restore the iPod with the iPod Updater after running disk utility on it.

My iPod isn't showing up when I plug it into my iMac G5 and going through the help menus, I've found that it suggests re-installing iTunes before trying to restore my iPod.
I have a color screen 20 GB iPod that I purchased about a year ago.
Now, will re-installing iTunes dump all my ratings and notes and cover art I've collected and modified over the past year?
It seems to me that my iPod is full of songs I might not like to listen to as much and podcasts I'm never going to listen to in the first place, so it seems to me that I'd be better off just restoring the iPod instead.
Any suggestions or people who have the same problem?

No, it won't. Cover art is embedded in the song files and ratings and comments are stored in the 'iTunes library' file, which isn't replaced or deleted by re-installing iTunes.
Before re-installing iTunes, you might read this article.
It contains lots of useful information about fixing these kind of problems.
Personally, I would try the 5 R's first (Reset, Retry, etc.)

IPod Nano shows on desktop, but not in iTunes

I haven't used this iPod Nano with my G5 since it was new. Today I connected it, and it shows up on the desktop, but it doesn't appear in iTunes. I unmounted it and connected it again. each time I do that, it tells me it's detected a software update, but when I check, the dialog box tells me it's current.
any help, please?

Hey, ive had problems with my ipod lately. basically when ever i plug my ipod into my computer, it appears in mycomputer and itunes also opens. i have run the diagnostic in the help menu in itunes and it is detecting my ipod HOWEVER it will not show up in the list on the right hand side!!!! I have tried all the things suggested by apple such as reinstalling and many other things like ending the process etc. no luck.. plz help!

Have you tried simply resetting hte ipod while it's connected to the PC?

You need to expand each link and read all the stuff. For example, under
"Connect iPod to a high-powered USB port"
the 4th line down says
+If the issue persists, try disconnecting other USB devices from the computer such as printers, cameras, scanners, external hard drives, and USB hubs to determine if there is a conflict in the USB chain.+
That is a step you wouldn't want to skip, as it can really narrow things down.
