IPod (5th gen) has strange bars on screen/won't start - iTunes 7 problem??

Hello, I have been having strange problems with my
iPod for the past two days.
•Wednesday night I downloaded some TV shows. For some
reason I ran the software update and allowed my
computer to download and install the new iTunes 7.
After installing, I turned off the iPod and went to
bed.
•Thursday morning I was disappointed to find that my
iPod would not turn on (I pressed menu and play at
the same time and nothing happened). Later that day a
coworker suggested that I press menu and the center
button at the same time and it came to life again!
•Thursday evening I watched my TV show with no
problems and the iPod seemed fine. However, this
morning I tried to turn on my iPod and now it's not
working again!!
I press menu and the black screen with the Apple logo
flickers on for 1 second, then goes blank and then
comes up again for 5 seconds, then disappears and a
horizontal row of very thin lines shows up, running
along the bottom 1/4 of the screen...I tried pressing
menu & center button, menu & play...that causes the
black screen & Apple logo to flicker on and off
several times over and over, until after about 8
seconds it cuts off the top half and then becomes
blank or the horizontal rows of lines occupy the
bottom 1/3 of the screen.
In doing some quick research it seems that a lot of
people are having problems after the iTunes 7 update,
could that be my problem? If so, how do I uninstall
it??

I have identical the same problem, also as from wednesday night, the only diference is that i was still using the previous version of iTunes. Took my iPod (5th generation) to Apple, they swopped it out for a new one saying it was a Hard drive problem, I don't agree, New iPod has same problem. My old iPod's, a 1st and 4th generation as wel as a mini and shuffel has no problems at all. I then uploaded to iTunes 7 to no avail.
In adition my 5th gen ipod makes sounds that to me sounds like the hard drive atempting to start up every time aprox 5 to 8 sec with the apple logo apaering at the same time for hours on end.

My battery died, so I plugged my iPod in to charge, however, the screen was very dark. I thought the problem might correct itself when it became fully charged, but it stayed the same. Changing the brightness in the settings menu doesn't do anything. I've also tried to reset all the settings on the iPod, but nothing happens. As far as I know, my iPod wasn't damaged in anyway beforehand. Is there anything else I can try?

Have you tried a reset or restore of the device in iTunes to see if that helps? To reset the device, press and hold both the Select (Center) and Menu buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.
Otherwise, connect the iPod to your iTunes library and click the Restore button from under the iPod's Summary tab.
If the issue still persists, it's likely hardware related. A white screen could be the result of a loose LCD ribbon cable, or a damaged LCD screen. Either way you'll need to have the iPod serviced in order to gain fully functionality of it again.

My ipod 5th gen has been acting up. Its been shutting off at random times and appears to be glitching out. The screen would go different colors and when it would turn back on my recent texts and stuff would be deleted.

My iPod 5th gen has been doing this for awhile, though it progressively got better over time, it still happens occasionally like when I'm out running. My iPod is never able to connect strongly to any WiFi network. All the WiFi networks keep disappearing and then coming back, and this is infuriating because it wont let me sign in to iTunes or IMessage at all or update my iPod easily. My date and time keeps getting off track and every time i set it back to normal it just gets messed up again. Now it wont let me connect to iTunes and receive push notifications. I tried logging out o my Apple ID on my phone but now it wont let me sign back in. WHAT IS GOING ON HELP PLEASE!?!?!

Sounds like you need a new battery. Take the iPod Nano to an Apple store or an AASP. Whichever is more convenient for you.

Are you running the latest version of iTunes (10.7)? Maybe try resetting the iPod with it still plugged into your Mac. To do this, press and hold both the Select/Center and Menu buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.
It might even help to do a low level reformat of the iPod's Hard Drive using Disk Utility. See this article for instructions.

I am running Windows 7, with all updates (as of 3/14/2014) have itunes 11.1.5.5 showing no available updates. When I plug into the USB port, the ipod gets recognized, Itunes starts. I can see the files on the ipod. I have reset the ipod and restored. Same problem. When I drill down to the actual file I want to listen to, it doesn't play. On the screen the icon changes from pause to the arrow for play, the index line never advances. You can hit the select button, use the scroll wheel to advance through the file, and hit play again, but no noise. There isn't noise if in the dock (which other ipods and iphones work with in the house) there is no noise if the headphones are plugged in. i was thinking harddrive, so I replaced it. couldn't get the new one to function. When the new harddrive was in the unhappy face would come up. I could force into disk mode, in hopes of restoring it, but in disk mode, neither windows and hence itunes would recognize it as an ipod. I put the old hard drive back in thinking maybe I damaged the cable, but it came right up, but with the same problem, it won't play the sounds... I replaced the Zif cable just in case, still the same...
i've sure seen lots of Ipod 5th gen video for sale on Ebay, compared to the 4th that I had, which I broke the scroll wheel cable on, but never had such problems with it. Any thoughts out there from someone who might know what it's doing? It seems weird that it loads the music files, and deletes the music files but won't play them. The only other thing I can think of perhaps is the battery too low to spin the hard drive up to play? It does seem to be a very small (physically) battery compared to the 4th gen... but it is thicker...
When I got it it was doing the low power thing, so I did all the steps to re-charge, and restore, but it won't play the files... Thanks for any thoughts!

It sound like you did some good troubleshooting. Thanks for providing the details. I don't think a problem like this is related to the battery.
With a 5th gen iPod (early version) that has a 30GB hard drive, it may have problems using a larger capacity hard drive. That may explain the different problem you had when you replaced the hard drive, if you changed the capacity.
Try the following test. Do another Restore from the iPod's Summary screen in iTunes. At the end of the Restore process, choose NOT to sync anything automatically.
Go to the iTunes Store and download a free song. You can find the current free songs by clicking Free on iTunes under QUICK LINKS, on the iTunes Store Home screen.
Manually load that ONE song on the iPod. Disconnect iPod and try to play that one song. Does this same problem occur?

The home button on my ipod 5th gen has stopped working comletely.

I have had my 5th gen ipod touch for almost a year now. I never drop it. i take good care for it. its a 64 GB one so it was heaps of money. LIke 90% of my life is on that thing. Should i ask for a replacemeant or is it possible for it to be fixed? I only have 3 weeks of the warnity left.

That sounds like a problem with your internet connection
Try disabling the computer's antivirus and firewall.
- Next try the manual install method of:

My ipod nano 5th gen has grey 'scratches' underneath screen, fixes?

Last night I was in bed and I turned my ipod on and the screen was lighting up with grey lines which were like marks covering the battery bar and the time, the rest of the screen was clear. I tried to reset it but it stayed, I continued to use it normally today but it carried on playing music although I paused it then turned the songs off, when I went to turn the ipod off again the screen had lots of grey scratch-like marks over the album artwork and a big grey circle over where the title, artist and album should be. There aren't on the outside screen and could be from screens within, however not sure. Is there any way that this problem can be fixed?

My ipod 5th gen has blacked out and i know you have to press home button & lock button to reboot it but my home button is spoilt.
I couldnt connect it to itunes or my laptop and nothing was detected.
I tried recboot but failed because nothing was detected.
Leaving it to charge at the wall socket didnt help either because nothing lit up.
I have tried forcing my home button even if i know it is already spoilt, still to no avail.
I have tried to clean dirt off the button, didnt work.
Is my last resort going to an Apple store and spend perhaps hundreds of dollars just to fix this when i know i just need to press 2 buttons tgt
