IPod 5th gen headphone jack not working

I Have the iPod 5th gen and only today the headphone jack has stopped working. When I plug the headphones in it is as if the iPod just doesn't see them and carries on playing music from the iPods speakers and not the headphones. I have no clue what it is doing or any idea on how to fix it.

Hey Katie, as Philly Phan has stated there is a tiny switch inside the headphone port. If it gets stuck open your iPod will think the headphones are plugged in. The plugging / unplugging generally will free the switch. Also, try looking inside the port, your looking for foreign debris, like lint, if you see something try blowing it out or carefully remove it with a wooden round toothpick. Good luck, Cheers.

  • Kenwood X991 & iP200 cable with iPod 5th Gen 80GB does NOT work correctly

I have a conundrum. My wife has the 4th Gen v1.2.1 iPod 30GB which works fine on my Kenwood X991 Head Unit. I recently purchased the "new" 80GB iPod 5th Gen with the latest version "1.0.2" which does NOT work properly. The iTunes software tells me that this 1.0.2 is the latest software.
When I attach my iPod to my stereo, it states "Reading" for eternity. It DOES play music but only plays Alphabetical Order ONLY. There is no ability to stop, change, fast-forward, reverse, etc....the only thing you can do is click "Source" to change to CD Player or Tuner, etc...
Does anybody out there know what is going on? I have a request into Kenwood as well. Thanks in advance for all your help!

Thanks for the help. It's an iPod Classic then 80GB. The unit plays when plugged in but does not allow searching, or switching songs nor displays as it is supposed to. My wife's 30GB works with no problems. Of note:
    Her 30GB = v1.2.1
    My 80GB = 1.0.2
Mine is newer by about 6 months. Both are the latest software according to the screen.
Kenwood has said to "reset the head unit" and "make sure I've got it plugged in properly". I need to try the reset part next but the last statement is funny to me. I can install a head unit, amplifier, re-run all speaker wire, install a Dual 10" subwoofer box, solder and wire tie all connections from a factory unit to a 3rd party Cable manager kit, but I need to "make sure" I know how to plug in an iPod cable.....laughable.

  • Ipad 4th gen headphone jack not working properly

    Any ideas on this ?
Every time I put put my headphone jack in all I could hear is hiss sounds and when I try to maximize the volume I could hear the music but its too loud for me .
If I try to move my ipad 4th gen in stand it goes back normal , if I put it down or any other position I want to try it starts to give weird sounds again . ( plugged headphones )
It's my first time buying a tablet so I have little information about tablets and how to solve this .
Is it hardware or software issues or dust , it's been a week and half since I bought the ipad .
I'm quite satisfied with the buy but if it won't work well I guess I'm gonna be having a :( face .

Thanks so much for this post!
I got a lot of fluff out of my 1st gen ipod Touch's headphone jack. The audio would be fine if I used my Apple headphones (but they have completely fallen apart, 3rd replacement set from Apple) but with third party headphones I had the same problem as you described.

  • Ipod Got wet, headphone jack not working

So i stupidly washed my 5th gen nano in the washing machine (By accident) i put it in rice for a few days and it seemed to be working fine, it plays charges, syncs all through the usb port fine, but when the headphones are plugged in some sound comes out of the headphones and some sound comes out of the built in speakers, i cant control the volume of the headphones, only the volume of the speaker, is there anything i can do?

  • Ipod touch 5 headphone jack not working please help?

I have tried with multiple pairs of earbuds/ headphones. Either there will be audio in the left, or right, but usually never at the same time unless you twiddle with the headphone plug in. Sometimes there's no audio. I only got the ipod in December, so naturally I'm concerned that there's a problem.
If anyone has experienced anything like this, your help would be greatly appreicated. Also any help on how to fix it/ what I should do about it would be further appreicated.
    Thanks so much!!

    - Try cleaning out/blowing out the headphone jack. Try inserting/removing the plug a dozen times or so.
Try the following to rule out a software problem
    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. Seems you have a bad headphone jack. If the iPod is defective and not abused Apple will exchange it at no cost

  • Ipod 4th gen volume buttons not working. Volume bar not showing in music or video apps, not a speaker problem as this works fine when testing built in alarm tones???

Ipod 4th gen volume buttons not working. Volume bar not showing in music or video apps, not a speaker problem as this works fine when testing built in alarm tones???

Have you tried the standard fixes:
    - Reset:
Reset iPod touch:  Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore the iPod from backup via iTunes
    - Restore the iPod to factory defaults/new iPod.
If still problem you likely have a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genus Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • IPod Touch 5th gen headphone jack and battery not working properly

Yesterday my iPod touch 5th gen's battery started draning at an incredible rate. Won't last longer then 1 or 2 hours now. And add onto it the headphone jack stopped working properly. It's now only plays in one ear, it's all static over the sound it's supposed to play. I baby my iPod. This all happened out of the blue. What do I do to fix it?

Saraa22 , the same recommendation was given over a year earlier:
Try the following to rule out a software problem
    - Check also Settings > General > Accessibility > Hearing. Make sure that the sound balance is not set all the way to "R".
    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

If anyone has this same problem with their Ipod touch 5g headphone jack. I found a way to fix it. I did everything of the above but nothing actually worked . But this is what worked!
First reset your Ipod by pressing down the on/off button and the home button at the same time for 10 seconds until you see the apple icon
Then after it turns back on : Go to settings then press on general. Then press on accessibility  and scroll down and make sure MONO AUDIO is on!
This will definitely fix the problem.

  • 80G Headphone Jack not working

My 80G iPod headphone jack stopped working.  I did the 5 R's.  Didn't fix it.  Transferred jack out of my old (dead) iPod to my 80G.  Nothing again.  Could have been a bad part though.  Can I buy this part on here?  Or is there anything else I can try?  Thanks a lot.

Since you seem to know how to take them apart (and have the proper tools), maybe you can buy a broken iPod (of the same type) on eBay for the spare part.  Most iPods with a hard drive that are broken are broken because of a bad hard drive.  So your chances are good that the assembly with the headphone jack will be working.
And you'll have some other spare parts, such as screen, click wheel, dock connector...
If that broken iPod is broken because of a bad hard drive, but it is otherwise in better shape than your iPod, you can transplant your working hard drive into that iPod.

  • My ipod 5th gen battery is not holding a charge,

my ipod 5th gen is not holding a charge like it should so i tryed to get it repaired under warranty, but the site said they couldnt create repaire because of repair buisness mapping?

I'm not sure what site you used or what the error was, but if you can't set up service via Apple's web site, call them:

  • Acer Liquid E700 problem with headphone jack, not working properly.

Here I am again, what a surprise! Reporting another problem with my 2 month old ACER LIQUID E700. Now the problem is, the headphone jack isnt working properly. When I watch movies, or play music with a headphone or earphone, the dialogue or conversations during movies , or the lyrics sang when playing music, can barely be heard. Also , everytime I connect my earphone it the E700, theres a fast ticking sound, which is faint but you can really hear it, and thats when I realized something was wrong. P.S This phone was never dropped or gotten wet. Im really starting to regret buying an acer phone.Any acer representatives out there who know whats going on?

Well airstrike2014, I do know how it happened to me, it's weird but definitely how it happened, so I was downloading a electrical razor app to scare my friends (I know, it's stupid, but anyway) and the app works by vibrating at full power and playing a electric razor sound, but it would only vibrate (and the app description said that it would make some sounds too) and I tried maxing out my sound but there was really no way to make it play any sounds. I got tired of it 5 mins later and uninstalled thinking the problem was in the app or something, but I go watch a YouTube video right after and no sound was coming out either, even with the volume maxed out and with headphones, so I restart my phone, now sounds play perfectly when there aren't any headphones plugged in but when there are, it now happens what you described there, a tick sound lasting the first few seconds the headphones are plugged in and if I try to play any media it happens that "instrumental effect", other heaphones do the same, so it's obviously the phone.I mean, is it really possible that some kind of problem occurred while trying to vibrate and play sound at the same time? Well it was for me, the phone was fine until then.Sorry for the boringly long post haha

  • IPod touch 5th Gen Headphone Jack

I contacted the 2 points on the left side of the headphone jack on the iPod touch 5th Gen with a pin when I was probing in there. Did I short circuit anything or am i just paranoid.
    Thanks

If it works fine now then likely nothing damaged.
If problems now but not before then you likely damaged it.

  • Ipod touch 5th gen tilt function not working

    Hi
I recently got a replacement (from apple) for my Ipod Touch 5th Gen 64gb due to the home button being broken.  It is running the latest software which I believe is IOS 8.1.1
Note - other than the broken button I had absolutely no issues with my old Ipod.
When I received the Ipod only 3 days ago I did the normal process of restoring from back up etc but have noticed that the tilt function is not working.
I have tried all the obvious solution - first being checking portrait orientation isn't locked, then resetting the Ipod via holding down lock and home button and finally I have done a factory reset and still have had no luck with this issue.  Is there an easy fix to this or am I going to have to go back to the Apple store?
    Thanks

If you successfully restored (went through all steps without error) to factory settings/new iPod via iTunes (Not via Settings>General>Reset>Erase all Content and Setting) and still have the problem that indicates a hardware problem.

  • Headphone jack not working

Have had external speakers connected to headphone jack for over a year now, worked flawlessly.
Upgraded to Lion one month ago.
Unplugged cord going to external speakers to plug in some headphones.  Headphones worked fine.  Unplugged headphones, plugged in external speakers (back to orignal setup.)
There is no signal to external speakers now.  I've tested them with an iPod, the cord and speakers work fine when connected to any other device.  The speakers will not work when connected to my iMac.
I've checked the Audio Out in Settings.  When I connect the speakers, it switches from internal speakers to digital out.
Any ideas or does anyone know about how much will this cost me to fix?  My warranty expired in Sept.
    Thanks.

Try doing a SMC reset and PRAM reset, it's possible you may need to do each reset 2x.
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • External headphone jack not working correctly

I bought a new MBP before Christmas and am now having an intermittent problem with the headphone jack. I have external speakers plugged into the headphone jack. They've been working great. Yesterday, they stopped working and the speakers in my external display started working. I unplugged, replugged, the external speakers with no result. I checked the sound tab in system preferences but the external speakers don't show up. Earlier today the external speakers started working again. I had some weird switching of audio from left to right channel in the speakers and then again they turned off. I try the external speakers with my ipod and they work fine. I plugged other external speakers or ipod headphones in the computer and they don't work and aren't recognized in system preferences. Does my computer need a trip to the repair shop already? Note: I also hear occasional "pops" through the external speakers. This never happened with these speakers before. I used to use them with a Windows machine I just replaced. Please help!

I have this same exact problem.
Did the repair solve the problem?
I have a wedding band and used my old MacBook to play music during the band breaks. I haven't used the MacBook Pro yet since I just bought it, but now I'm not so sure I will. I can't only imagine what type of catastrophe it would be if I had a dance floor packed full of people and the MacBook Pro decides to play through the internal speakers only.
