IPod (5th gen?) keeps crashing iTunes

Hi there. I'm trying to restore my iPod. At first, it kept crashing iTunes when I connected it to my computer so I couldn't even restore. I rebooted and was able to restore but it crashed iTunes during syncing. Now it keeps crashing iTunes when I restart it. Is my iPod dead or is there anything else worth trying here? iTunes software is up to date.

Try the Hrad Reset first
After charging till full charge, at least 2 hours (preferably 4 hours)
Toggle the Hold switch, make sure you dont see the red mark when you do the  next step
Reset the iPod -> Press Menu and Center button simultaneously for about 10 secs or till the Apple Logo comes ON
Then release the buttons
Select your preferred language.
Here is the Apple support Article on the 5Rs
http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/classic/
Then do the iPod Disk Diagnostic, in this earlier post by tt2, it wont fix your problem, but help you decide if your iPod is dead.

    Try:

    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • IPod 5th Gen keeps turning on and off!! ***

My iPod 5th Gen just keeps turning on and off, I dunno why but it just does!
I just updated the iPod about 10 minutes ago, and it completed then right after it comes up with the Silver Apple logo, then lights up, then shuts down, makes the hard drive clicky sound too. And just does that over and over and over again. I hate it.
I've tried to put it into Disk mode, and Menu+Select and Menu+Play. Nothing works!
    What do I do??

You restore it when plugged into your computer and it shows up in iTunes. The restore function is in iTunes. Sometimes you have to force the iPod into disk mode in order to get it to mount and show up in iTunes.

  • I can't sync playlists from my iPod 5th gen to my iTunes library on new laptop

I have a new laptop and have managed to move all my music to it and install iTunes and all the albums are correct and present, but it was a bit complicated. I'm not sure if we missed a step in moving everything via a larger hard drive, but my playlists were not transferred and even though my iTunes recognises my iPod 5th gen it won't actually sync. I have run the diagnostic test, it says it's all fine. It won't sync new purchases and I can't copy playlists from my iPod back into the iTunes library. I have 15 playlists and I don't want to do it all over again. Does anyone have any ideas?
    Anyone have any ideas?

I did find that if I bought new songs from iTunes that I could transfer them to playlists on my iPod, but otherwise when I connect the iPod, under settings (on the left under the device icon) if I select music, it brings up the tick box for sync music. If I try to tick that box, it asks if I am sure if I want to remove existing music and sync with this iTunes library.

  • My ipod 5th gen keeps turning off whenever I unlock it!

A few days ago I was on my ipod 5th gen and it randomly restarted itself, I didn't think much of it but as soon as I unlocked my ipod it froze for a second or two and restarted itself again, it happens every time I unlock it, if i stay on the home screen its fine and I can access my music but it wont connect to any wifi and always restarts itself every time i type in the passcode. I've tried going into itunes to back it up and restore it but it needs me to allow access to my ipod by unlocking it (which i cant do) and saying i trust my computer. Nothing ive tried has done anything and i cant back it up cuz i cant unlock my ipod without it restarting itself.

  • IPod 5th gen hangs up iTunes

I have a 5th generation iPod that, when attached to my Mac G4 (OS 10.5.8) causes iTunes to hang with the spinning beach ball of doom, until forced quit. The iPod will show up on the desktop, and I can move (copy) files to and from the iPod.
I tried the troubleshooting tips as per Apples articles. Also tried putting the iPod in "disk mode" but can't get it to work. I can reset the iPod, and it works fine from the wheel.
I should also add that the problems started when I was connecting to a different computer and iTunes started to sync to my iPod, then froze. Now all of my music / media is no longer on the iPod. (It was all on iTunes so I should have no problem restoring the media, if I could get it to sync)
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

This is the procedure for Disk Mode
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1363
However, since you say you can copy files to it from the Desktop (like it was a hard drive), I'm not sure if putting it into Disk Mode will help.
And just to confirm, this is the procedure you used to reset the iPod
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1320
I'm thinking that the hard drive volume in the iPod became corrupted when it was connected to the other computer and "started to sync to my iPod, then froze."  It's also possible that these problems, when you connected it to the other computer and the current iTunes lockup issue, is due to a hardware problem on the iPod's hard drive.
I did the following to fix a problem with an older 4th gen iPod.  IMPORTANT NOTE:  It's possible that this will not work, if there is a hardware problem on the iPod's hard drive.
With iTunes NOT running, connect the iPod.  Run Disk Utility.  The iPod should appear in the Disk Utility sidebar, like an external hard drive.  Select the iPod's hard drive (NOT the volume indented below it) in the sidebar.  Go to the Erase tab.  Select Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as Format.  Name it anything you want.  Then, Erase it.  Hopefully, it will complete the erase, because if it does not, there may be a hardware problem on the hard drive.  And since the iPod software was just erased, it will be non-functional if a hardware problem on the iPod's hard drive prevents it from being reformatted.
When the erase completes, quit Disk Utility and run iTunes.  iTunes should recognize the iPod without locking up.  Decline any setup windows that pop up about "syncing" (choose no/cancel).  You want to get to the main iTunes window, where you can choose the iPod in the sidebar (under DEVICES) and do a Restore.  The Restore will put the latest version of software back on the iPod.  You can proceed from there and sync your music.

  • Ipod 5th gen keeps deleting music

Has apple still not fixed this? I have had this ipod touch for a while and after the original sync, my music refuses to stay on it. I plug it back into itunes and get the exclamation of missing/corrupted files... resync and from there it's an endless cycle of poop. This really annoys me because my classic has never had issues but the newer apple stuff is acting crap....

    Yup. Same exact thing

I have an older iPod (5th gen, 30GB+video) that I had connected to my computer with iTunes.  That computer crashed and the only place my music is stored is on my iPod.  How do I move that music to the iTunes program (version 8) on my new computer.  When I connect my iPod to my new computer the music shows up in my iPod's music directory but I can't move it to the library.

I am having trouble with my iPod 5th gen after iOS update. It's in recovery mode and iTunes keeps timing out when I try to restore it. What should I do??? If possible, I would also like to keep all of my data.

    Maybe this will help:
    Troubleshooting
As with all clickwheel iPods, you can reset this iPod by first toggling the hold switch on and off and then simultaneously pressing the select (center) and menu buttons for approximately 5-10 seconds. This is a common fix should your iPod behave unexpectedly or lock up. Once reset, the iPod should display an Apple logo for a few seconds before showing the main menu. This procedure is similar to rebooting a computer and damages none of your music or data.

  • Ipod 5th Gen Video 80Gb disk mode not recognized on itunes

    Hi there everyone,
So i have my ipod 5th gen 80GB video and here's my problem.
Time ago i had it in a pocket of my backpack that was supposed to be waterproof. We got completely washed in NYC and when i took it out of my backpack pocket the ipod was dead or behaving in a weird way.
It didn't turn on then i let it dry. After weeks i've been trying to charge it but it seems it had battery problems so i bought a new one and replaced.
Now the ipod stays on but it keeps restarting showing me the sad face. Then it restarts beginning fgrom the apple logo and the same thing comes up.
I can put it in disk mode and also in the diagnostic mode thru the key combination.
I let it sit for 24 hours more or less to the wall charger and the battery seems to be completely full and the ipod stays on, still fiving me the same synthoms. Then i put it in disk mode while downloading the last version of itunes (9). When i plug it in, i hear the sound that windows makes when you plug something via usb. It installs the software and it sees it as an ipod device. But itunes WON'T.
This appens with every usb port that i have. I can put it in disk mode even plugged into the computer, i hear the windows sound like i just plugged something in but nothing.
When i reset the ipod, sometimes i see the screen that tells me to connect the ipod to itunes and procede to the restore.
Sometimes i see the big V and the "ok to disconnect". The if i plug it in with itunes open on my desktop i see the "do not disconnect" but nothing happens, it will not see it yet.
After 30 secs more or less, the ipod restarts again on its own showing me the sad face.
If i turn it off it tells me "very low battery" but i don't know if this last one statement its important or not.
I know already that all of my music and videos are gone. I just would like to get to the restore step then i'll start over again loading music and videos.
What kind of problem do you think it has? Is there another hardware component damaged that needs to be replaced?
Is there a solution for this kind of issue?
Of course i've been following ALL the apple instructions on the website, the 5 R's and so on but nothing worked.
I really hope that someone in here could give me an hint because at this point i really don't know where to crush my head
Thank you so much for your time!

I'm having the same exact problem. When I first started using Vista it was fine, but now all of the sudden it will do nothing with My iPod and it kind of angers me.

  • Need to get all the files, well music and video, from my ipod touch 5th gen to my itunes libary.

Need to get all the files, (well music and video), from my ipod touch 5th gen to my itunes libary. (So basically sync the other way to normal)
Laptop hard drive broke so had to buy a new one and obviously now need to sort out my itunes.
Did try downloading all my purchased stuff onto itunes but it has missed some things off, and there are some files I did not purchase from itunes so need a way of getting them back on there.
Sure this question has been asked a million times but can't find anything to help me on here so thought I'd ask.
-Did have a look at going onto the start menu and opening the hidden items thing but couldn't see any reference to ipod or device on it so wasn't sure how to do it that way.
-On itunes under my device when its connected, the section about manually restoring and backing up, would that help me? Because that says it will manually back up my ipod to my computer then could restore that back up, obviously I don't want to accidnetally get rid of everything on my ipod so didn't want to try that just in case without checking.
(And yes I have disabled auto sync to device when conncected!)
Can anyone help me please? Sorry if i've overcomplicated this!
    Thanks:)
    Chris

Backing up an iOS device will copy some data to a backup file within iTunes, but this excludes all media.  You can also transfer iTunes Store purchases from the iDevice to iTunes but, without using a third-party tool, nothing else.  As long as you do not sync the iPod with your new library, the media that's on it will remain ... for as long as it keeps functioning, is not lost, stolen, eaten by the dog, ...
You may also have an option to recover your previous library from your old laptop; as long as its hard drive isn't fried, a computer repair store or technician may be able to extract the drive, mount it in an external enclosure, and copy your data to another PC.  Whatever you choose, there is no real alternative to having all your media on your computer, managed by iTunes, and regularly backed up to another device/location.

  • Ipod 5th Gen 60Gb keeps resetting and... (please read)

    Hi everyone.
My ipod 5th gen 60Gb keeps resetting itself when plugged to the wall charger.
Once it starts again it gives me the sad face and the "Very Low Battery" screen.
Tried to reset it and i gets to the screen that tells me to connect to itunes for restore.
When i do that itunes won't see my ipod.
How can i fix it? How do i get to finally restore my ipod? Is that an hardware problem? I did replace the battery and it finally has power for hours but i still have this tooth to pull out.
Can anybody help me please with some suggestions/solutions?
Your help would be really appreciated! Thank you!

I forgot to say: When i plug it it it gives me the apple for 5 - 6 seconds, the the SAD FACE with the link to the apple support page, then the "Very Low Battery" screen, then it restarts again and it does the same thing over and over again.
I can put it in disk mode, yes it will charge but if i attempt to plug in to the USB2 port (rear) of my computer with itunes open, it doesn't get recognized.
The hardware management of windows sees the ipod once i put it in disk mode. Then after 30 secs more or less it restarts and windows tells me the ipod device has problems.
    Help PLEASE!!

  • I tried updating my iPod 5th gen to iOS 8 but it only shows me a picture of the iTunes logo and a charger at the bottom, I'm not sure what this means or what I need to do. Can someone please help me?

I tried updating my iPod 5th gen to iOS 8 but it only shows me a picture of the iTunes logo and a charger at the bottom, I'm not sure what this means or what I need to do. Can someone please help me?

After restoring to factory settings/new iPod you will then have to restore from backup
    To restore from backup see:
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.
You can redownload most iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
