IPod 5th Gen will not reset to factory defaults - "Device is Busy"

I am trying to fix an iPod 5th gen. So far I have gotten iTunes to recognize it, but it needs to be restored to factory defaults. I try reseting it and I get an error message saying that the "device is busy" and it fails restoring. Any idea on how to fix this? I get the same error on three computers, so it isn't my Mac.

- I would start with
Removing and Reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows XP
or
Removing and reinstalling iTunes and other software components for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8
However, after your remove the Apple software components also remove the iCloud Control Panel via Windows Programs and Features app in the Window Control Panel. Then reinstall all the Apple software components
- Then do the other actions of:

paying special attention to item #5
- New cable and different USB port

  • Nano 5th Gen will NOT reset or connect to iTunes

I've tried the usual toggling of the hold button followed by the menu/select button on this Nano, which has worked on other models that I own. This Nano will not reset and isn't recognized when plugged into iTunes. Just the black screen no matter what. Out of warranty, so any suggestions other than taking to Apple would be greatly appreciated!

If none of the suggestions mentioned in the iPod Nano 5th Gen. User Manual and on the iTunes & iPod Hints & Tips website, you should take the iPod Nano to an Apple store or an AASP. Whichever is more convenient for you. If you have Apple Care, take advantage of it by calling them.

  • IPod 5th gen will not play (clock stuck at 0:00)

So I've seen similar postings here about this. My 30GB 5th gen iPod just started acting up by not playing any song at all -- the song timer stays stuck at 0:00.
First I've reset the iPod -- doesn't play afterwards.
Then I restored the iPod -- still doesn't work.
I tried playing with earphones plugged in -- nope.
How about through the iPod dock connector? -- nope.
However, I can tell the HD drive inside is OK -- I can sync the iPod, erase and add songs, and even play songs within iTunes from the iPod.
Has my iPod gone or is there a way to salvage the situation? I use my iPod every day! Any guidance would be much appreciated!

First, to Athena53, these forums are user to user forums and besides Apple employees who monitor the forums for content, they generally do not answer questions here.
Second, my own experience with the counter stuck at 0:00 is there is a bug in the 5th generation iPod firmware where when you wake up the iPod, plug in the headphones, then try to play something, it will often get stuck at 0:00. A reset of the iPod gets it out of that state.
The work around is that the problem is plugging in the headphones first. Instead I start the iPod playing, THEN plug in the headphones and I never get the problem. And I have verified that it always occurs when the headphones are plugged in first then hitting play after the iPod wakes up.

  • IPod 5th Gen will not recognize the fact that it actually has music on it

This question has been asked before, but not answered. With that in mind, I will ask you this: Though my iPod does definitely have 18 gigs of music on it, as I can see them when I choose to view it as a portable media device, or whatever, and search manually through windows explorer, it will not recognize the music in either iTunes or on my iPod. I have not restored my iPod because that would be a pain. I have had it for no more than two weeks and this occurrence has made me very upset. It happened when I was working on a playlist. There was a beep sound as if it had ejected and then the black and white screen with the apple came on as if it had been reset. Subsequently, all music disappeared from the iTunes sub menu of my iPod. Furthermore, even though in the "about" on my iPod it says there is music there, I can not see it. When that happened there was a windows message saying that there was a corrupted file and that I should use the "chkdisc" feature. I did that, and nothing was fixed. Please help. If you want to try to "repair" your iPod to get the music to show back up...
    http://www.yamipod.com/main/modules/docs/help/corruptedipod.php
But again, it would be better to restore. Also, 3rd party software does not always work flawlessly.
To fix the error that came up, along with getting your music to show back up properly (without the risks of 3rd party software), you need to restore your iPod. If all of your music is on your computer/in iTunes, you won't loose any of it.
    See this for more info...
iPod: What to do if Windows displays an "itunes.exe - Corrupt File" message
    And if the problem persists...
Da Gopha: What to do if Windows displays an "iTunes.exe - Corrupt File" message
If the iPod was just not showing you the songs even though they are there, the first option would be better. However, since you are getting the chkdsk error, you should/need to restore your iPod.

  • Ipod 5th Gen will not sync movies from Itunes...

I've had this Ipod for a couple of years now and the only way I've been able to put movies on is through a few programs that I've downloaded. I've bought a few movies off of the Itunes store and every time I put it on the iPod, the iPod freezes up, and then sometimes my iPod loses all of it's content. The iPod and iTunes are both up-to-date, is this just an issue with the 5th gens?

Are these HD movies? iPods can only handle SD movies.
Some store downloads include both versions. They will show HD-SD next to them. If so, right-click > Version and make sure SD is checked.
if it just shows HD, you should be able to use the Advanced menu to create an iPod or iPhone version.

"Connect to a computer. Use iTunes to restore."  When I connect to a computer, iTunes doesn't recognise it.  The iPod 5th Gen does not work at all. How do I fix my iPod without losing any data?
I have seen the Apple webpage suggesting the "five R's" (including restore).  Before doing anything, I want to be sure that restoring or any other action is not going to delete or risk my data.
I would be very grateful if anyone can suggest a fix for this problem, in a way that will not risk my data.
    Thanks in advance!

Did you try a hard reset with the iPod still connected to your PC?  Have you tried multiple USB ports, preferably high powered USB 2.0 ports?
To do a hard reset, first make sure the hold switch is in the Off position, then press and hold both the Select (Center) and Menu buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.
Have you also worked through each and every single troubleshooting suggestion in this Apple support document?

  • My iPod 5th gen is not turning on after iOS 8 update!

My iPod 5th gen is not turning on after iOS 8 update! Before this all happened, I noticed that my apps crashed unexpectedly, it was laggy, and it decides to reset on its own at times. I CAN'T charge or plug it into my computer. Also, my home button is sunk in but my sleep/wake button at the top is most definitely not. I know my iPod was not running out of battery and I did not even power it off. I am very disappointed but I really need it to turn on =/

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
Ignore the reset and when it says place the iPod in recovery mode
Place the iPod in recovery mode using one of these programs:

  • Ipod 5th Gen 60Gb keeps resetting and... (please read)

    Hi everyone.
My ipod 5th gen 60Gb keeps resetting itself when plugged to the wall charger.
Once it starts again it gives me the sad face and the "Very Low Battery" screen.
Tried to reset it and i gets to the screen that tells me to connect to itunes for restore.
When i do that itunes won't see my ipod.
How can i fix it? How do i get to finally restore my ipod? Is that an hardware problem? I did replace the battery and it finally has power for hours but i still have this tooth to pull out.
Can anybody help me please with some suggestions/solutions?
Your help would be really appreciated! Thank you!

I forgot to say: When i plug it it it gives me the apple for 5 - 6 seconds, the the SAD FACE with the link to the apple support page, then the "Very Low Battery" screen, then it restarts again and it does the same thing over and over again.
I can put it in disk mode, yes it will charge but if i attempt to plug in to the USB2 port (rear) of my computer with itunes open, it doesn't get recognized.
The hardware management of windows sees the ipod once i put it in disk mode. Then after 30 secs more or less it restarts and windows tells me the ipod device has problems.
    Help PLEASE!!
