IPod 60GB misbehaving?

Hi everyone,
I have an old iPod 60GB colour that has, until now, been pretty good. It's now about 7-8 years old and is about 80% full.  Last weekend I got the unhappy iPod error face on the screen and could not raise anything.  This has happened before once or twice, but was corrected with a couple of forced restarts.  This time, connecting to the computer did nothing - repeated restarting the iPod did nothing.  I also tried to put the iPod into disk mode (see Apple support for this issue) but it was non-responsive. After a couple of days with nothing working I took the plunge and bought a new iPod Classic (very nice).
As soon as the new iPod Classic was home and synced, the old iPod 60GB starting working again and has been fine ever since! I suspect gremlins! I am now the proud owner of two iPods! Has anyone else had an experience like this?

Most iPods that use a hard drive for storage fail because the hard drive becomes faulty.  In your case, it may be becoming unreliable, but still works some of the time.  If you have content on the iPod that is not in your current iTunes library, you may want to off-load it to your computer's drive.
In case the cause is data corruption, and not a physical problem, on the hard drive, you can try doing a Restore on the iPod (now that it is currently recognized by iTunes).  This will erase the iPod, re-install its software, and set it to default settings.
NOTE:  If the hard drive is becoming unreliable, it's possible for the Restore process to fail.  If that happens, the iPod may no longer operate.

I have worked my way through the assistant and nothing works. I have tried connecting in disc mode but although the screen on the ipod is showing that the device is charged and that it is in disc mode as soon as I connect it to the computer it comes up with the error message 'please wait very low battery' and stays like that until I disconnect when it appears to be OK again. I have tried on both pc and mac.
BTW the ipod is an ipod video not classic if that makes any difference.
    Thanks

  • IPod 60GB Freezes When I Connect to USB

I read a lot of the postings related to this topic, but none seem to fit my situration.
I have an iPod 60Gb I have been using without problems, synching regularly with iTunes, since Christmas. In the past couple of days, when I plug it into the USB port, I get the "Do Not Disconnect" message, which never goes away. Toggling the Hold switch does not reset it. Pressing the center and Menu buttons for 6 seconds does not reset it when the iPod is plugged into the USB port, but it does reset it if I first unplug the iPod from the USB port. Once reset, if I again plug it into the USB port, it freezes, and I have to unplug and reset again.
I moved the USB connector to another port, with no effect.
When I plug the iPod into the USB port, it does not appear in the iTunes display (and if iTunes is not running, it does not invoke iTunes), nor does it show up in Windows as a disk drive under My Computer.
I thought perhaps the iPod was conflicting with another drive, so I fired up the Disk Management utility under the Windows System Accessories and then connected the iPod to a USB port. Even though Windows makes the sound of a drive connecting to the system, nothing shows up in the Disk Management window to indicate a new drive has been connected, or that anything is conflicting with an existing drive.
I have performed the first three of the five R's recommended by Apple - Reset, Retry, and Restart. I have not tried to Reinstall because I have the latest version of the iTunes and iPod software (2006-01-10), and since the iPod is not connecting via the USB port, I do not see how running the Updater on my desktop PC is going to be able to push any updates to my iPod.
I am trying to avoid the 5th R, Restore, as that seems a bit extreme and that it will result in a lot of collateral damage from slicking the hard drive.
    Any suggestions?
Dell Dimension 8400   Windows XP Pro

    Hi there,
I'm having the same problem too. I've even gone so far as to try the 5th R. Twice now. The first time, as long as he iPod remained in it's dock afterward, it would still appear in iTunes and on my desktop so that I was able to sync it properly. However, upon disconnecting it and re-inserting it in the dock it was no longer recognoized and reverted back to it's usual "do not disconnect" screen.
At first I thought that it might have been a cabling issue, as I'd around the same time that I'd first experienced the problem, I switched from the USB 2.0 cable to a FireWire cable beween the computer and the dock. However, upon switching back, the problem remained. Furthermore, I'd recently picked up a newer 5G iPod. I've had no problems with it at all. So the dock, cable and ports that it's connected to are all fully functional.
I tried the restore another time tonight. Once again, the restore was successful. It copied all of my music back to the iPod. However, this time the unit managed to get itself stuck back in the "do not disconnect" state again without my disconnecting it from the cradle after the restore. So it's even worse than last time.
In the Disk Utility, the iPod appears. I can use the Verify Disk tool and it appears OK. As well, I can eject the iPod from here, which is successful at making the "Do not disconnect" screen go away. However, upon disconnecting and then reconnecting the iPod to the cradle, it sends itself back into a tizzy -- the unit appears as a disk in the Disk Utility, but iTunes cannot see the device as an iPod, nor does it appear as one on the desktop.

  • IPOD 60GB will not transfer PHOTOs from my XP 64 bit computer

iPOD 60GB will not transfer PHOTOs from my XP 64 bit computer - I get read/write to iPOD hardrive error message. Everything esle is working (including iPOD update). Is it something I am doing wrong or is it not compatible with Window XP Pro 64 Bit just for photo transfer?
AMD 3500   Windows XP Pro   Windows XP 64 bit

I Loaded the iPOD software into an older 32 bit computer running windows XP Home edition and it works fine. As I suspected, it is NOT compatible with windows XP 64 Bit Pro edition OS - Beware! When is Apple going to update their software to run iTUNES & iPOD using the latest 64 BIT computer proessors?

  • Error 1418 after ipod 60GB vid skipped then froze competely.

My ipod 60GB video started to skip tracks, then froze completely. I tried the resetting and this helped to get normal screen back but minus all my music. Next I tried restoring but it came up with above error message. I seem now to have tried everything - I've updated newest version of itunes, I've also tried by downloading to version that came with CD. I have tried connecting iPod to a different USB port, I have re-register .dll files as described in article #304996, I have reinstall Windows USB drivers... The only thing I haven't been able to try is the suggesting of someones to connect to ipon and whilst new version of firmware is installing, 'safely removing hardware' in task bar and removing then reinstalling ipod. I'm struggling with this final suggestion as when I start up itunes, it doesn't come up with the message about a new version of firmware over 1.2' etc... and if it did, I can't see where the task bar is.
I am soooo missing my ipod - If anyone can help (itunes support couldn't - they just emailed me above suggestions) I would love them forever!!!! My computer is over 5 years old- could it me that?

This just happened to my 30GB Ipod. Any advice?

  • IPod 60GB mounts only once in iTunes

I didn't know if this is an iPod or iTunes topic, so this place one the coin toss. For some reason my brand new iPod 60GB with original 1.0 firmware and latest iTunes/QT will only mount in iTunes once per application load. If I want to do further updates with iTunes, I have to quit and reload it. Is this a problem with me or do others have similar issues?

    anyone?

  • Ipod 60GB froze while listening to music

I purchased an ipod 60GB about 6 weeks ago and was enjoying my new toy very much. On my morning commute to work my Ipod stopped playing in the middle of a song and started skipping to the next song and the next without being able to play any of them. The battery also started draining rapidly. Once I arrived in the office I plugged my ipod in to start charging the battery and tried resetting my ipod. Now I get a icon to visit www.apple.com/ipod/support, which I did but could not find any help. I tried resetting again to no avail. I do notice a skipping harddrive sound from the ipod as if something is stuck. Can anyone help me?

Mine just did the same thing. I did a reset, and did a restore. It seems to be working right now. Might be worth a try.

  • Computer Freezes When Putting Music on iPod 60gb

    Hi,
Just got a replacement iPod 60gb (5th gen) and I have been putting all 6000 songs (or so) back onto it. everytime I drag the songs, the computer freezes (after different times)
why does it do this?? And how can I stop it?
    Thanks.
    Dan.

Id say (Taking for granted your on manual update since your drag and dropping) is there theres alot of info going back and forth over the USB connection. If your adding ALL the music, it will be easier to just set the iPOd to "Auto Update" and have iTUnes send it all over at once

  • IPod 60GB - are these always the same?

What I really mean is, I would like to buy the iPod 60GB because you can watch video's on it??? Or am I totally wrong?

    Mildred,
The confusion here has most likely arisen because you are posting in the wrong forum.
This forum is for the iPod with color display, commonly known as the iPod photo. They are no longer made, so any 60GB iPod you purchase now (providing it's new) will be an iPod with video playback capability.
The iPod with video is officially know as the iPod 5th generation, but almost everyone calls it the iPod video.
The forum for posting questions about this model iPod, or if you just want to browse and read some of the topics, is here.
    Using the iPod 5th generation.
The bottom line is, if you buy a brand new 60GB iPod, it will be the model capable of video playback.

    Toshiba Satellite   Windows XP

The 5th gen ipod didn't come out until late 2005, so if yours is 3 years old it is another model.
Have you tried the 5 R's:
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
Especially item 1 - reset? This will reboot the ipod without losing what it has on it. READ THE RESET INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY, the reset method is different for different models of ipod - you need to figure out which model you have.
If a reset doesn't fix it then I'm afraid you'll need to go to item 5 - restore the ipod or something more drastic like formatting the ipods drive (both of these will erase the ipod) - see troubleshooting articles here:
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/
By the way, this is a user message board, not Apple support. To contact Apple directly for help see the support info page - I think you have to call them (and maybe pay for it):

  • IPod 60GB Color - Dock Connector Issue

I've just been given a 60GB Color Display iPod, and I'm having the weirdest problem.
According to the literature I can find, this iPod should be the same in all respects as the 40GB 4G iPods we already own. However, when I put it in my Bose Sound Dock, nothing happens. Similarly when I put it in a Dock Connector cradle.
However, if I unplug the cable from the Dock Connector cradle and plug it directly into the iPod, it works fine.
And, when I slot the iPod into my iHome alarm clock, it works just fine.
The natural conclusion is that there is something slightly screwy with the pins on the iPod connector, but I'd appreciate any other opinions before I go to the effort of returning the thing.
    Thanks
      Windows 2000

OK. I worked it out. The 60GB is ever so slightly bigger than the 40GB so it doesn't fit properly in the cradles, or in the Bose with the 40GB holder installed. Bum.

  • IPod 60GB resets each time it turns on?

Is it normal for a 60GB iPod to reset...so the apple logo shows up...each time the ipod is turned on? It's never happened to me before and its annoying. Also, how loud is the ipod's HDD supposed to be, I find that when I tip my ipod from side to side, I hear a faint screeching noise.

After 14 hours of inactivity, the iPod goes into hibernation mode. After this, it will appear to reset when started again.

  • PC won't boot until iPod-60GB is unplugged !?

    Hi,
I have installed & configured a 60gb iPod (with video) to a Dell notebook (Lat-D400).
Since day-1, every time i restart the system, unless iPod is unplugged from the notebook, the Windows does not load... at all!!
I also use a docking station for my notebook; I have tried booting with & without docking station - with iPod connected the WinXP-Pro doesnt load, without the iPod, the system boots very smoothly.
What could be the reasons? How to resolve this issue?
I guess there might be some conflicts, but how to determine & rectify them?
    Thanks,
    Ashish.

    Hi Jeff,
Thnx for suggesting this article; but unfortunately, it did not work.
The boot order did have USB as the 3rd optin, which I disabled, now the boot order is :
    1> Internal hard drive;
    2> CD drive &
    3> Floppy drive.
As soon as the iPod is unplugged, the system boots smoothly.
    Any other suggestions please?
