Ipod 80G classic Restore Loop

A few months ago i accidentally dropped my ipod onto its corner. after that it would freeze and not work properly. eventually it set itself to disk mode. i have no idea how or why. it just did. now when i connect it to itunes it says i need to restore. when i try to update and restore it will go through the first part of the process, but it seems to skip the second half of it. itunes then reads it and tells me that it has detected an ipod in recovery mode and needs to be restored before it is usable again. i tried one solution i found but it failed.
i reallly wanna know how to fix this if possible without sending it in, im desperate to fix it so anybody that can help please do!!

Hello!
Try this:
1. Open the Control Panel.
2. Double click on Administrative Tools. Note: If you don't see Administrative Tools, look at the left column in Control Panel for a link that says, "Switch to Classic View," and click it.
3. Double click on Computer Management.
4. In the left column, click on Disk Management.
5. Locate the iPod and right click on it, then click Change Drive Letter and Paths.
6. Click the Change button.
7. Use the drop-down menu to select a new drive letter. Note: Make sure to choose a new drive letter that is not already assigned to a network drive. The drop-down menu will display all available letters that are not assigned to a physical drive. Drive letters that are assigned to a network volume will still be listed here. It is also a good idea to assign a drive letter other than a, b, c, or d, as these letters are usually reserved for other system drives.
8. Click OK.
9. Click Yes on the confirmation dialog.
10. Close the Computer Management window.
11. Restart your computer. Make sure you're iPod is not connected to your computer when you restart it. This may cause trouble in restarting your computer, as your computer may try to "boot" to the hard drive in your iPod.

    Hello mvfx,
What other USB devices do you have attached to your computer? If there are any at all, try temporarily disconnecting them to see if that makes a difference as they sometimes cause driver and drive letter conflicts.
Another option might be to simply reformat the iPod using the tools provided by Windows. For instructions on how to reformat your iPod, see this article.

  • IPod Nano in restore loop

When connecting the iPod nano my laptop, iTunes states the nano is in need of a restore. Ok, I thought, I'll restore it then reload my music, I've succesfully did this before. I proceed with the restore but when it shows back up in iTunes listing, it again asks for a restore. From this point forward, it is in a restore loop. I take this nano to a friends Mac G5 and no problem, loads, re-syncs, works great. Bring it back to my laptop and same problem. Tried another Windows XP PC in my house and it too, works great, loads songs, re-syncs, works fine. I think I have an iTunes database error within this particular Laptop. Removed iTunes and ran a registry cleaner twice but that did not help. Any suggestions???

Reformat the iPod drive through the computer management within administrative tools in the Control Panel. When doing it select FAT for the format, not FAT32. Its the only way I fixed mine after every other attempt (i.e. drive letter change, reinstalled iTunes, format the drive by right clicking on drive, etc.)

  • IPOD 80g Classic & docking station help!

Hi everyone, hope someone can help. Bought a friend slimline TEAC cdx60i for Christmas to use with her IPOD 80g. When she puts the IPOD into the dock, it freezes and won't play, she has had to reset everytime. Any suggestions before we return the unit to the store, its nice but won't work half the time & frustrating. I saw an earlier post from 2009 that said this was happening after updating Itunes to a newer version? thanks!

A bit more info........this is a CD/IPOD charging unit that attached to the tv to play music/videos from your IPOD (maybe that explanation is not necessary). It plays videos fine when choosing the function from the IPOD menu, but when trying to just play music it freezes on the docking station. My friend is worried about resetting it all the time and just plain doesn't want to deal with the hassle, maybe its not compatible with the classic model? Thanks again all.

  • Thin white line at top of ipod 80G classic screen

Would like to know if there is a way to get rid of this line, which is located across the top of the screen, in the area where the battery icon is located. The screen was fine then I downloaded the latest version of software for the 80G Classic and synced it. Next thing I knew I had this white line across the top of the screen. Is there a way to get rid of the line, or do I have to send the unit in and have Apple repair it? Only had the unit since December 2007.

    Oh - you are good!

  • Restoring ipod 80G classic - 1439 error code

my computer crashed and when i tried to resync my ipod on the new hard drive it erased everything. it then went into a different format/language (symbols, etc.) and i couldn't do anything on it. so i reset it, and have been trying to restore it through itunes 8.0 and keep getting the error 1439. i have read through every discussion and tried everyone's suggestions, including all the suggestions on the apple support page. my ipod is right outside the one year warranty. has anyone sent theirs to apple to be fixed or taken it to an ipod store? i'm trying to save myself the $130, but it seems like that is my last resort.

Here is some information on error 1439

  • 80GB Classic, Restoration Loop

My 80GB iPod Classic crashed, every time i turn it on it displays the apple logo and then goes straight to the red X. It will not enter disk mode and if i hold the reset button without letting go when its plugged in the computer will recognise it and tells me i need to restore my iPod. When i click restore it cannot complete the initial progress then the ipod turns back on and goes to the red X. The computer does not recognise the iPod in my computer or anywhere else on my computers hard drive. After reading essentially every support article on the issue ive taken to posting the issue myself to see if anyone knows anything further? Any help would be greatly appreciated because paying to have it fixed is out of the question due to lack of money. Thanks.

We have uninstalled and reinstalled itunes again, and this time it seems to have solved the problem. Now we're having another one which I'm currently scanning the forum for solutions. Now he's getting repeated albums in the album list view. The same two albums are repeated on the iPod 13 times, where they are only in iTunes once. We tried using iTunes to restore the iPod, and we got the same "insufficient access priviledge" error message. AAAAARGH!!!
But in answer to your question, Mobbie, I believe we have another computer we can use. Since the music is on an external hard drive, it shouldn't be too hard to try that to fix this new problem.

  • Just fixed iPod stuck in Restore loop

Well I busted my iPod. So I purchased a hard drive for it and installed the unit. All my instructions (gleaned from boards and tutorials) said to connect the thing and restore the iPod. I connect it and it says it is in recovery mode and in order to use it I need to restore it. No surprise, I expected that. I click restore and enter my admin password. It seems to begin the process but then kicks out a warning that says it cannot restore because iPod is busy. I tried ejecting and putting into disk mode manually. I reconnect and the warning says the iPod is corrupted and needs a restore. I go through the whole rigamarole again and it says it is busy. If I leave it connected after the busy warning and click 'OK' then it automatically begins again, saying that the machine is in recovery mode and needs to be restored before i can use it. Same thing all over again...Click restore, admin pass, can't restore because the iPod is busy and so forth.
I tried ditching iTunes and re-installing it. No dice.
I tried erasing the drive with Disk Utility, but the erase failed citing an input/output error. the computer told me that partitioning the drive will eliminate some iPod functionality so I didn't try that.
I tried connecting it to my friend's computer. I got it to toss up a license agreement window for the iPod software (a good sign I guess) but I don't know his admin password to continue. The hope that lies therein is that the license agreement window for the iPod software pops up and that is something that differs from the process on my computer.
I tried going back to my computer and ditching iTunes again and reinstalling an earlier version. No dice. Earlier versions of iTunes will not recognize the library because it was created in a later version and therefore iTunes will not open.
I even tried giving the iPod the old smack in the palm of my hand like some have suggested, but again, no dice.
Any ideas on what needs to happen? How do I convince the computer that iPod is in fact not busy and really would rather restore itself? How does an iPod with literally nothing on its mind become busy and how, if it is, does it become "unbusy"?
(Update: I went back to my friend's computer with him there to enter his admin password. It now does the same thing my computer does and will not bring up the license agreement for iPod software.)

I had this problem today, and I think I figured it out. After multiple tries, and ITunes freezing up, I did a reboot with the IPod connected. I got a window saying that the drive was unrecognizable by the computer. It gave me three choices, to "verify," "Ignore" and another choice, I think it was "OK". I picked "ignore." Then I opened ITunes, it recognized the IPod, and it prompted me to restore again. This time it worked. I think that by telling the IMac to ignore the "drive," ITunes didn't see it as being busy. This makes sense to me, as I enabled the IPod to be used as a drive to store files. If this is the case, I'm surprised Apple doesn't see fit to provide decent documentation for these error codes or fix the problem in ITunes. Hope this helps for you.

  • Can't Sync ipod 80G Classic

I just burned several cds that I purchased new that, after importing, only show up in my iTunes in the Recently Added folder in Playlists.  They do not, however, show up in Albums or Artists.  As well, they do not sync to my iPod at all.  Also, the playlist sidebars in iTunes and my iPod no longer match (apart from the recently burned cds that don't show up, other playlist folders that still show on my iPod no longer show on my computer--not sure how long that has been a problem).  I have not tried importing cds into iTunes for awhile, but it was definitely before I installed the most recent update to iTunes (as of 11.13.13).  I tried uninstalling the most recent update and installing a version from a couple updates ago to see if thast would help but I was unable to install an older version for some reason. Any ideas?

  • Pictures on Ipod 80G Classic - not all showing

I sync'd my ipod with my photos and only some are showing. I can see them in the split screen, but when drill in to see a picture or to have them randomly scroll I get a blank screen - Can anyone help?

Aye - tried all the steps and suggestions listed in the document but no luck.
Could this be an issue with the iPods battery?
Otherwise I might have to get the nearest apple shop to look at it but i'd like to try all other possible avenues first.
    Many thanks,
    Swift101.

  • My iPod 80g Classic is regonized by Windows, but says there is no disk.

When i go to My Computer, IPOD is in (E:). When i double click it, it says "please insert disk in drive (E:). I then go to Computer Management, Disk Management, and it says Disk (E:) is "unreadable." at this point, i have tried nearly everything. what should i do?

Hello! Welcome to the Apple Discussion Boards!
Here is a helpful article for problems between a PC and the iPod. I'm assuming you are working on a PC as you mentioned My Computer. It is possible that the hard drive has become physically damaged. If the steps in the following article do not work, call Apple or visit an Apple store or authorized service provider for further help.

  • 80G Classic Ipod Stuck in Reset Loop, Please Help

    Hello,
My Ipod (80G classic) is stuck in the continuous reset loop showing only the apple logo. I have tried restoring it numerous times, to no avail. I have also tried uninstalling itunes and re-installing it, different versions also, this does not work either.
This is very frustrating, and I am finding no help on the apple site. Any suggestions?

I'm not clear if you've actually managed to get iTunes to restore the iPod yet. These steps should make it possible. Hold Menu+Select for about 6 seconds until the iPod resets, then hold Menu+Play as soon as the Apple logo appears, again for about 6 seconds to put the machine in disk mode. Connect the iPod to your computer, closing iTunes if it opens. Browse *My Computer* and right-click on the drive for the iPod, click Properties, then click Tools. Under Error-checking, click *Check Now*. Under Check disk options, select *Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors*. Click Start. Mac users should run *Disk Utility / Repair Disk* for the equivalent process. This should find and correct any errors in the logical & physical structures of your iPod's hard drive. Once these have been fixed you should be able to start iTunes and complete the restore process. I'd suggest you don't rush to put back all your music in one go. Test that the iPod works with a smaller playlist first.

  • Ipod will not restore or update

My friend came over with her Nano and used it on my computer. When I plugged in my Ipod 80G classic into my computer, it said that it could no longer read the contents of the Ipod and to restore it. However, when I click "ok," it automatically disconnects my Ipod and I cannot get it to restore. I keep getting the message, "cannot read the ipod error 1436." It has erased all of my music off of the Ipod. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Itunes, have updated the drivers, with no luck.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

  • IPod Classic 160GB looping restore.

After moving my iTunes library to another disk and confirming that files were fine, I plugged in my iPod to sync and charge it, and it said that it was in recovery mode and required a restore. No problem I thought. Had a little time, so clicked restore. It then reported that in 12 seconds, iPod would reset and be back to factory settings and I could then re-sync all of my files. When iPod resets, iTunes just reports that it's in recovery mode and suggests a restore. tried this loop about 5 times, and it still will not reset. If I eject, then plug back in. Same thing again. Any ideas?

I'm having the same problem. I bought an iPod Classic 80GB two days ago. After purchasing I tried to set it up on the computer. As soon as I plugged it in it told me I needed to restore. (I never even got to use it once.) After going through what appeared to be a successful restore suddenly the exact same screen popped up thus casting me into the dreaded endless restore loop. I've read all the fixes for the same problem on older models. Nothing works. Anyone have suggestions? I live in Tibet, about a 2 hour flight away from the nearest apple service center.
I'm running Windows Vista (it's from my work - I was an iBook user until it died) and version 7.5.0.20 of iTunes.
I've tried the following fixes recommended in old conversation strings: reinstalling iTunes, downloading updates, renaming the drive, reformatting the iPod using Windows (it doesn't work on the iPod classic), the .bat file thing, disabling album art (it can't be done in this situation, but I tried emptying my iTunes library anyway), the various sequence of restarting the iPod at certain points, and other things i have forgotten.
