IPod 8G 1st Gen cannot be restored, error 14

I have uninstalled and reinstalled all iTunes and supporting applications. Disabled security software. Tried different cables on different USB ports. Tried different user accounts. Tried two different iMac's and user accounts at work. Followed everything in TS1808, TS1275. I let it sit for a week without touching it. The restore will progress through to verifying and quit with error 14. I have never to my knowledge 'jailbroken' my iPod.
I can find tons of posts on other people having this issue, but never a resolution. I know you're out there Apple techs - please help a co-worker.

Error 14 indicates an error in your USB hardware/drivers. This may have been modified by certain USB devices that you may have plugged into your computer (i.e. a webcam). Another potential cause of this problem is security software on a PC. To fix the security software issue, you are going to have to kill the security software and re-download the OS update before you run the update.
You may want to consider reloading your OS and setting everything back to a baseline state before reloading your apps. Sorry, no easy answer on this one. I would, if there is one handy, take your iPod back to an Apple store and see

  • IPod Touch 1st gen - cannot connect to wi-fi

    Hi,
Am having a persistent wi-fi connection problem with my iPod Touch 1st gen, which I just bought second-hand. Any advice gratefully appreciated, as I have not been able to find a solution on the forums so far.
    THE PROBLEM
The iPod detects the signal from my home wi-fi router. When I try to connect, it invariably gives the error message "Unable to join the network [name]". I have 2 laptops and an iPhone running on this network with no problems.
    TROUBLESHOOTING TRIED
    - upgraded to latest version of iTunes
    - upgraded to latest version of iPod Touch software
    - upgraded to latest version of router firmware
    - removed all encryption on wireless signal (no WPA/WEP etc enabled)
    - reset wireless settings on iPod
    - removed all content from iPod & did a full restore & resync
    Please help! Thanks in advance

I had the same trouble for about a year. Tried everything. This finally did it-
    settings-wifi-other
manually enter network name, select WEP for security
    enter password once network found
After this, the network address field was still initially blank, I toggled back and forth, then the address info just appeared, all good after that!
Everything else was a waste of time
    It may help to clear Safari history and cache first (mine happened to be cleared after the unsuccessful reset}
Apple called it a hardware issue, and wanted me to send it in. Repair cost was near or more than replacement cost. This all started after 2.2.1 update - my best assumption was that the update over-clocked the wifi, and fried it. That didn't make sense to me, as it could still show the networks.
Hoe this helps you. The itouch was running 3.1.3 when I tried this last night.
Hope this helps! Reply back with your success stories!

  • IPod Touch 1st Gen will not restore. Unknown Error (6)

So, i've been trying to restore my iPod for a good few hours now. Nothing seems to be working, and i've tried just about all the tips from here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1275
Is there some other way to fix Unknown Error(6)? Im planning on taking it to the Apple store to see if they can work there restoration magic on it, but id still like to see if i can fix it at home first.
    Thanks.
Edit: Im not very good with this stuff, so you guys may already know this, but i can't do anything with my iPod at this point. It just gives me the USB ----> ITunes screen.
If it matters, my iPod froze after i tried to start an app(downloaded from App store. Ipod is not jailbroken). I restored it, no problem. But it was being VERY VERY slow and laggy, and this strange thing happened where it would reboot, show the apple logo, then go dark and show the logo as if it was starting up again, ect. Basicly, this is what happened the second time.
    1. Reboot, apple logo showing.
    2. Off for a quick second.
    3. Reboot, apple logo showing.
    4. Off for a quick second.
It just kept happening, and i had to reset it by holding the top and middle button. Now its in restore mode, and when i try to restore it i get Error (6).

  • Ipod Nano 1st gen. stuck in restore loop

My first generation iPod nano is stuck in a restore loop. iTunes (Windows, XP)is up-to-date and the restoration goes ahead smoothly without error messages until it finishes; then the computer again says the device is in recovery mode and needs to be restored. It also doesn't cycle on or off using the dial while in this loop. Any ideas?

For the error, "files that are in use by another application", check the preferences on all your antivirus/antispyware software and make sure they are set not to scan iPods. If you are manually managing your music, set your preferences not ot scan external storage devices.

  • HT201412 Held Sleep & Home buttons on my iPod Touch (1st Gen.) during restoration process, now won't turn back on. What can I do myself to fix this? Thank!

In short, I was accidentally restoring/resetting my 1st generaton iPod Touch and I wanted to quickly get out of that, so I rebooted as you all know is that I held the Sleep and Home buttons together, and now, it doesn't want to turn on at all! When I try to turn on, only the "Apple" symbol appears ad disappears, goes back off, no power, after a few seconds. Any heard of this or experienced something similar? Anyone know any tricks if so? And, no, I have no time to go to AppleCare, especially since it's an outdated, 1st genration iPod Touch, and for that I feel no need to make an urgent appointment to them. I appreciate any feedback. Thanks!

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Ipod touch(1st gen) stuck in recovery mode and cannot restore??

I just bought a used ipod touch 1st gen.  It was fully functional before I wiped it.  I wanted to remove all of the other person's music and personal info before I started using it. I also wanted to update ios.  I wiped it and when it restarted it was in recovery mode. I have tried to restore it and I keep getting an error message that it could not restore unknown error has occurred  (1).  I have tried troubleshooting and going through all of the steps that Apple suggests and nothing has worked.  Any suggestions?  I just want it restored and updated to the latest ios that will work with it (3.1.1 I believe) I don't know what to do at this point.

    Have you tried:
    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod.

    Error 1604
This error is often related to USB timing. Try changing USB ports, using a different dock connector to USB cable, and other available USB troubleshooting steps (troubleshooting USB connections. If you are using a dock, bypass it and connect directly to the white Apple USB dock connector cable. If the issue persists on a known-good computer, the device may need service.
If the issue is not resolved by USB isolation troubleshooting, and another computer is not available, try these steps to resolve the issue:
Connect the device to iTunes, confirm that the device is in Recovery Mode. If it's not in Recovery Mode, put it into Recovery Mode.
Restore and wait for the error.
    When prompted, click OK.
Close and reopen iTunes while the device remains connected.
The device should now be recognized in Recovery Mode again.
    Try to restore again.
If the steps above do not resolve the issue, try restoring using a known-good USB cable, computer, and network connection.

I have a ipod nano 1st gen. I recently purchased the nike+ reciever and shoes and they worked great. I had not problems installing the latest version of ipod software version 1.3.
On my latest run I got soaked and the nike+ receiver stopped working after the rain. Waited a day until it dried out and reconnected it to my ipod and it did not recognized the receiver.
I reset my ipod and it still did not recognized the receiver.
I restored my ipod and it ereased the nike+ icons from my ipod and itunes. I updated my windows software and reinstalled itunes 7.0.2 in my computer and still the nike+ icons do not appear in my itunes and the updates indicate that I have the lastest version of the itunes and ipod software.
What else can I do to reinstall the nike+ software in my ipod and itunes?
