Ipod 8gb song capacity

I have an ipod touch 8gb - not sure of generation but bought for me as a present new around 3 or 4 years ago, if that helps.  (I think it's 4th generation).
I have 637 songs on there, but it now says I am at capacity and can't add anymore.  From what I have seen, that sounds a lot less than should be possible.  I know it's only a guide, but I've seen adverts for these quoting around 2000 songs - and I haven't got any particularly long tracks on there - the odd 10 minute prog off, balanced against the odd 20 second grindcore tracks...
I've deleted all my apps downloaded to free up more space, so that can't be the problem.
It will presumably be something obvious but I'm at a loss of how to alter it or even find out, so thought I'd post here.  Can anyone help?
Thanks.

Capacity
8GB, 16GB, or 32GB flash drive2
Holds up to 1,750, 3,500, or 7,000 songs in 128-Kbps AAC format3
Note 128 ACC is compressed. In the Summary pane for the iPod in iTunes you can specify/change compression

  • Song capacity of 60G IPod and 20G IPod

I have a 60GB IPod with 517 songs now loaded (approx. 4 minutes per song) and have only 40.2GB still available. My wife has a 20GB IPod with the same songs and has only 3.1GB still available. It seems highly unlikely that my IPod can hold the advertised 15,000 songs or that my wife's IPod and hold the advertised 5,000 songs, or anything close. Perhaps there should be some allowance for the operating system but, even so, the advertised cpacity seems greatly exaggerated. Am I missing something?

i hate how apple says you can fit a certain amount of songs on the ipod, it gives people the wrong impression.
Apple's estimates for song capacity is almost perfectly accurate. They specifically indicate that their estimates are based on tracks encoded at 128kbps AAC files of about 4 minutes each. I don't see how you would get the wrong impression.
There's nothing misleading about their estimates if you read and understand how they arrived at the estimates.

  • Song capacity question

I'm a bit unclear on song capacity. I'm pretty sure my ipod mini 4gb was promoted as holding 2000 songs. Now the 4gb models have a claimed 1000 song capapicty and you now need 8gb to hold 2000 songs. What's the real deal? Thanks.

Yeah, I'm sure Apple avoided that pitfall of Creative, which was an extremely good move on their part.
Simply put, get a nano, and you won't go back. Just remember to either:
    Buy a case, or
Use the slipcover very often, get to know it. It will be your best friend.
And you should get a white one too. The front doesn't seem to get as scratched as the black one does.

  • Song capacity for iPhone

I have ran a search for this question but nothing came up. How many songs can you load onto the device? I have a library that is over 2,000 songs, and was interested in purchasing an iPhone this summer.
    Thanks in advance.

The song capacity for the 16GB iPhone should be about the same as the 16GB iPod Touch, which is up to 3,500 songs.
Music capacity is based on 4 minutes per song and 128-Kbps AAC encoding - actual capacity varies by content.
Up to 3500 songs is also based on having no video or photos.
You can't get caught up with the up to number of songs advertisement, since the actual capacity varies by content.
Are all your songs encoded 128-Kbps AAC, and do all songs average 4 minutes per song?
It is more important to go by the storage capacity that your songs take up, which you can determine with iTunes - for all music, or by playlist, etc.
You won't have a full 16GB of storage capacity either. This is the decimal equivalent, which is not the actual. The actual storage capacity for my 8GB iPhone is only about 7.3GB. This takes into account the difference between the advertised storage capacity and the actual - which is less than advertised for all hard drives and flash drives. The same applies to your hard drive's actual capacity on your MacBook. And OS X takes up roughly 500MB or so of the actual.

  • Song Capacity for 4gb Nano

I am currently thinking of purchasing the 4gb Nano. It states a 1000 song capacity, does anyone know, if you do not use it for photos, will it store more songs?

Try not to think in terms of song quantity. It's merely an estimate.
There is no limit on the number of songs it can hold. You are limited by the available space on the iPod Nano. Apple estimates the 1000 song capacity based on all of your tracks being 128kbps AAC files of about 4 minutes each.
If your tracks are encoded at a lower bitrate, or are typically shorter than 4 minutes each... then you'll fit more songs.
If they are encoded at a higher bitrate, and are typically longer than 4 minutes each... you'll fit less songs.
Photos and music share the same available space on the iPod. If you don't use photos, you'll have more space for songs. If you do use photos, you'll have less space for songs.

  • Ipod Itunes Disc Capacity

My 60g Ipod capacity is indicated as 25.89g by Itunes. Completed the 5 R's and no change. Why the discrepency?

If after a full restore it is not 55.8GB (a 60GB iPod should correctly read as 55.8GB actual capacity) then you have a faulty iPod. If in warranty then it is Apple's business to fix or replace it, so contact them asap.
    Good luck with it.

  • IPod Classic storage capacity

My ipod has a capacity of 148.79
    Songs on it are 146.46
But it only shows fee space as 280MB
I reduced the bit rate (and therefore the size) of some songs yet when I re-sychronised the free space had REDUCED not increased
    Any explanation?

    Yes, restore removes all info.
Sleeve artwork does not take up too much space. have have over 146 GB to use up.
Defragmentation will help a little. It would be better to put ipod in diagnostic mode to see how bad the hard drive is. use https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3784647?tstart= to put in diagnostic mode.

I am trying to sync my itunes with my ipod, but when I get to step 3 of syncing, it stops. Also, I deleted all the songs on my ipod, and when I go to my music in my ipod the songs are all still there and in a grey color and I'm not able to select them. How do I completely clear my ipod music, and how can I solve the syncing problem?

Sync works the same way it always has, connect the device, select the content desired to sync and sync.
All the media should be in iTunes already, iDevices are not and have never been backup devices.
If this is a new computer, move the content from the old computer to the new computer.

  • After downloading to my IPOD, the songs are shown but are also seperated by the album names. Is there a way to not show these album names on the IPOD? I just want to see song titles and nothing else! S

After sync'ing my IPOD, the songs on my IPOD are separated by the album names from which they were downloaded from. Can I get rid of those album names on my IPOD somehow?  I'd like to show nothing but the songs as I search thru the artists......
    Please help......Apple/IPOD illiterate.....

Try posting in a more appropriate forum, as this has noting to do with itunes U - the place where University/college/museums post education material.

  • Ipod shuffles song order when syncing

ive noticed ever since i downloaded the newest version of itunes (itunes 10.2.1.1) that every time i sync the ipod with my computer, it will screw up the order of the tracks of the artist i most recently listened to ONLY on my ipod. the song order remain correct on itunes. but when i sync it again without having edited anything, it will restore it to original, or even some times mess up the order further. anyone else having this problem or know a fix to it? thanks

My best guess is that you have clicked a column header so it is sorting the tracks by something other than track number.
Try clicking on the column header above the track numbers and see if that fixes it.

    Hello CATTY101
Check out the article below to troubleshoot issues with your iPod not seen in iTunes as it may relate to a driver is installed or you may need to remove and reinstall iTunes.

  • Why does the iPod duplicate songs when updating my playlists?

Why does the iPod duplicate songs when updating my playlists? Also, you cannot use the "show duplicate songs" feature on the iPod - I suppose that is because it is not supposed to duplicate songs on the iPod. But, if that is the case - why does it do it?

Try resetting your iPod, press and hold the power and the home buttons together approximately 15 seconds until the Apple logo appears. If that does not work try going into Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings. If that does not work try connecting to you iTunes library via the cable and un-sync the library from your iPod then sync the library.  For the next 2 options backup your iPod first, then do a Restore iPod from backup, if that doesn't work... As a last resort Restore your iPod as New. I too had the red circle and square after updating to 7.0.4 the last resort fixed mine, others have reported doing all the above, all have had reports of fixing the problem and not fixing it. Give it a try, hopefully one of these works, Good luck.

  • How do you backup ipod classic songs to computer?

how do you backup ipod classic songs to computer? i am only seeing how to backup my itunes library. i want to backup the specific music on my ipod so that when i get a new ipod, i can just restore that music that i've already filtered from my library to what is on my ipod. thanks!

  • When ripping a CD to iTunes to sync to iPod classic, songs are not listed in sequence.  Some are missing only to find them further down the list

When ripping some CDs to iTunes to then sync to my iPod classic, songs are not listed in proper sequence.  Some are separated from CD and listed elsewhere, what gives??

You probably have you Itunes music set as list and not as albums. Go to view at the top of Itunes and check as albums.

  • Moving iPod Mini songs to computer with burner

Help...The original computer I used to purchase my iPod mini songs from the iTunes store is no longer in working order and I need to get the majority of my Mini's songs onto my new computer so I can put them in iTunes and make new playlists, burn c.d.'s, etc.
How do I do so? Is there any way to get my songs off my iPod Mini and onto my new computer?
    Thank you
    S.J.

If old computer to new computer, via iPod:
In iTunes preferences, select iPod and enable for disk use.
Drag and drop the iTunes music folder to the iPod icon on the desktop.
Plug iPod into new computer, and double-click the iPod. You can then copy songs to new system
To copy from iPod to computer (on a PC)
