IPod always needs to be restored

I got an 80GB iPod Classic for my son for Christmas. Every time it needs to be charged (I think he runs out the battery), I plug it in and it needs to be restored. I don't know if it's because he ran the battery all the way out, or if there is something wrong with it?

somehow we fixed the issue

If you weren't able to sync the purchases to a computer previously and now your iPod needs to be restored so you can't sync it now, then you may be out of luck and will need to purchase your content again. Officially Apple does not allow redownloads of purchased items other than iPhone/iPod touch applications and iBooks. The official statement of their policy can be found here, among other places.
You can try contacting iTunes Store Customer Service (select the "Music Purchases" or "Video Purchases" category, as appropriate, then "Lost or Missing Items". You'll find either an "Express Lane" button - just follow the instructions to get to the contact form - or an "Email Us" button) ") and explaining what happened. Reportedly in some cases Apple has allowed redownloading on a one-time basis. But don't count on it.
    Good luck.

  • Ipod says needs to be restored, but when plugged into pc, goes straight to disk mode

so this is my friend's ipod classic [[used to be mine]] and it dropped and hit the ground from like a few inches, apparently. when it's not plugged in and i turn it on, it gives the ipod needs to be restored screen. I plug it into my computer and it goes straight into disk mode. i can 'eject' the 'disk' and then it shows up in itunes, and i go through the motions to restore the device. only, once it starts restoring, i get error 1439 and it boots out. If I reset the ipof [[menu and center buttons]] it just goes back to disk mode.... help! i really wanna fix it....
i've tried: reseting ipod, plugging ipod into a different usb port, updating itunes....

I think that impact has jarred your Hardisk.
Do the iPod Disk Diagnostic as posted earlier by tt2, it wont fix you problem, but help in troubleshooting.

If you synced your iPod Touch with iTunes, you already created a complete backup of all its content.

  • Ipod keeps needing to be restored

I haven't been able to synch my ipod to my computer since itunes version 7.6. Every time I connect my ipod to my computer it says that itunes detects an ipod in recovery mode and the ipod should be restored. But once I restore, itunes just keeps saying it detects an ipod in recovery mode again. I can't get rid of this message and now my ipod won't synch.
    Anyone have any solutions?????

    *Check iPod hard-drive for errors*
Hold Menu+Select on the iPod for about 6 seconds until it resets, then hold Menu+Play as soon as the Apple logo appears, again for about 6 seconds to put the machine in disk mode. Open iTunes and in the Sync tab of the preferences menu check *Disable automatic syncing of all iPhones & iPods*. Now connect your iPod to the computer, wait until it connects, then close iTunes. Browse *My Computer* and right-click on the drive for the iPod, click Properties, then click Tools. Under Error-checking, click *Check Now*. Under Check disk options, select *Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors* (Optional - takes ages but a good idea if you've reason to suspect physical damage). Click Start. Mac users should run *Disk Utility / Repair Disk* for the equivalent process. This should find and correct any errors in the logical & physical structures of your iPod's hard drive. Once these have been fixed you can reset the iPod (hold Menu+Select ) and should stand a better chance of a successful restore.
And if that still doesn't help try Erase your iPod - The Super Fix for most iPod Problems. Basically a low level format of the iPod’s hard drive to get around whatever problems are stopping iTunes from restoring it.
Once you've restored your iPod don't rush to dump all the data back exactly as it was before. Complex smart playlists can sometimes trigger constant reboots or dumping of the iPod's library. In addition, larger transfers can fail leaving data in an inconsistent state. Try this technique for populating the iPod in stages.
    *Break up large transfers*
In iTunes select the menu item *File... New Smart Playlist*. Change the first drop-down box to Playlist, the next to is and the next to Music. Tick against *Limit to*, type in say 10, then change the drop-down to GB, and set the last drop-down to artist. When you click OK you can enter a name for the playlist, e.g. Transfer. Now sync this playlist to your iPod rather than your entire library. When the sync is complete modify the rule ( *File... Edit playlist* ) to increase the size by your chosen amount, then sync and repeat. You can experiment with different size increments, if it doesn't work just choose something a bit smaller until it works each time. Before long you should have all your music on your iPod. Once that's done you can move on to other media such as podcasts, videos, photos, playlists etc.

  • My ipod always has a charged sign. My selector button doesn't work too!!!

when ever i finish charging my ipod, it says charged and when i unplug it, it still says charged. there's like some invisible charger plug in it but it always says charged. this depletes it's battery source. My selector round button in the middle is weird. it works to reset the ipod but it cant click anything else. it's not broken just doesn't wanna respond.

Have you tried doing a restore on it yet? Since the middle button works for a reset, it must be working, but that it doesn't do anything normally makes me think your iPod may need a full Restore.

  • IPod continually asks to be restored/Screen Black/Does not appear in Disk Managment

Okay, I have a 4th generation iPod Touch that was on version 4.2.1. I decided to update to an already downloaded version of 4.3.3. I Manually update by holding shift and clicking restore (I had save music and made a backup already). To do this I forced my ipod into recovery mode or DFU mode or whatever... After the restore went through, it finished and then it showed me that the iPod still needed to be restored so I restored it again. This continues on in an infinite loop of restoring. I started googling and found something about change the disk letter of your ipod in order to fix the problem of infinite looping restores but it seems that when I access Disk Managment, my iPod does not show. I had also realized that my iPod shows in iTunes as "iPod" but windows does not recognize it at all in the explorer. My ipod is around less than a year old. When I plug my ipod in, it make the connection noise. I have no idea what is going on and I've tried everything!

Restore loop (being prompted to restore again after a restore successfully completes): This issue is typically caused by out-of-date or incorrectly configured third-party security software. Please followTroubleshooting security software issues if USB troubleshooting does not resolve this issue.

  • Ipod still screwed up after restoring

my ipod has that icon with the folder and exclamation point. i followed the directions on the support page. first, i upgraded to itunes 7.0. then a warning popped up saying a corrupted ipod was detected and it recommended restoring. so i restored it. another pop up said it had been successfully restored and said to wait a min until itunes detected the "new" ipod. so i did. the same stupid warning popped up about detecting a corrupted ipod that needs to be restored. the same stupid folder icon still appears on my ipod. what do i do?????

i have the same exclamation mark with a folder on my ipod, but i cant even restore it.
the computer wont see the ipod at all.. i tried different usb ports, restarted computer several times, reinstalled the latest version of itunes, resetted my ipod several times.. nothing helps.
every time i turn it on the folder comes with the exclamation mark, and after 3 secs it goes off automaticly. when plugged into the pc, it doesnt turn off but it shows the folder non stop. windows doenst play the usb detection sound, windows cant see the ipod, and neither can itunes. no resoting possible.

  • My ipod needs to be restored but it only stays on the "connect to itunes" for approximately 20 seconds and then turns black as if it is turned off.

So a couple of months ago, I had to restore my new IPOD 5 TOUCH because i had forgotten the password and disabled it, so as you can imagine I am quite familiar with restoring it.
(The last time I had synced it was the only time that I had to restore it when I first got it when I had disabled it)
This morning I wanted to sync my ipod. So I plugged my ipod into my WINDOWS computer and waited for itunes to open, and it did just like it is supposed to. It then said itunes needed the latest update so i continued with updating it. Itunes updated, but then said that my ipod needed the latest software. I said "ok update" and thats when itunes made my ipod into DFU mode without me even touching it.
SOOOO as you can imagine I was quite upset. I then have realized that because Itunes had moved it into DFU mode on its own, I could not manually get my ipod out of DFU mode so the only thing i was left to do was go ahead and restore it.  (correct me if Im wrong)
My huge issue right now is that my ipod NEEDS to be restored, but it only stays on the "connect to itunes" screen for approximatley 20 seconds and then turns black as if it has been turned off. When I plug it into my computer and turn it on to the "connect to itunes" mode, it does open it in itunes and starts "extracting sofftware" but then when it turns black after 20 seconds, it closes out because my computer thinks it has turned off.
I have tried charging it, and nothing has progressed. Im not sure if anything can be done for it right now, or if I could bring it to an apple store to fix it... it's brand new about 3 months old.
HELP and some advice would be greatly appreciated  !
    Thanks!

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

My ipod needs to be restore and I get a error message saying :ipod software update server coud not be contacted.

    Reset the device:
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
If that doesn't help, tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings
Then tap Settings > General > Software Update
No data is lost due to a reset.

  • IPod classic: itunes tells me that my ipod is in recovery mody and needs to be restored. It then says that when it is restored that it will appear in the left sidebar however it never does. any ideas why??

I haven't used my iPod in a few months so I charged it up, updated my itunes and everything was going fine. However when I connected the iPod to the computer and went into itunes, a message kept popping up telling me my iPod is in recovery mode and needs to be restored. I clicked on the restore option then a message telling me my ipod had been restored popped up, it also said that my iPod would appear on the left sidebar of itunes once it had restarted and to leave it connected to the computer. The apple symbol appeared on the iPod and it appeared to be restarting. While I waited for the iPod to show up in itunes it turned itself on, after another few minutes the original message popped up telling me that the iPod needs to be restored. I have tried this many times but to no avail. I have also carried out numerous procedures said to solve this problem including changing the letter of the iPod drive but still nothing works!!! I don't know what else to do!! Has any experienced the same problem? Any ideas on how to get this working??

    Hey saandyy,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
You can try to restart the iPhone to exit recovery mode.
Turn your iOS device off and on (restart) and reset
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1430
If you can't update or restore your iOS device
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1808
Recovery mode erases your device and restores it, which should resolve the issue. If you previously synced with iTunes or iCloud, you may be able to restore from your backup after recovery.

  • Ipod touch (2G) stuck in "restore" mode.  Need HELP please

I have contacted Apple support several times since Friday and was just hung up on by an extremely rude lady in customer support. I am really frustrated and just trying to get my 5 yr old little boys ipod touch working again.
The situation is that our son's old computer crashed. So we have a newer computer set up for him. Reinstalled itunes on it. Called Apple on Friday, really nice rep gave me several instructions for transfering purchases, making sure everything was up to date and turning home sharing on. Did all that, got off the phone with him and then the computer tells me that the ipod needs and update.
Clicked ok, and update starts going for a few minutes.....then get an error message that says that the ipod is basically stuck in "restore" mode and needs to be reset to factory settings. It won't let me do anything to the ipod. It won't restore, reset, anything. Just shows a picture of usb cable and says to connect to itunes.
Connect to itunes and it keeps giving me say error message.
Will someone please help me? Apple support sure won't.

Did you try to connect in recovery mode, to start the restore process again? Connecting in Recovery mode is explained here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808
Also delete the ipod ipsw firmware file on your computer, to make iTunes download a new copy to restore from. Depending on your OS, this file can be found here:
    XP: C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Software Updates
    Vista and 7: C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Software Updates
If you're getting error numbers, take a look at this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1275

  • How do i back up files when my ipod needs to be restored?

So my ipod will connect to my computer, but not to itunes because it needs to be restored. I looked up how to restore the ipod and it says that if I do restore it then all my files will be lost. It also says to make sure that I backup any music files and videos before I restore it. I don't really care for my music or video files because it's in my itunes library, but I care about the videos I recorded using the camera. I don't know how to backup those videos especially when it won't connect to itunes. At the most it'll connect to my computer charging and my computer will recognize that there's something connected, but it won't show up. Can someone please help me?

Note that iPod backup that iTunes makes does not include synced media like apps and music.
