IPod and iTunes on Several Computers

Having given in to my son and bought him an iPod Classic I have already fallen foul of Apple software and before I lose any more hair please can someone confirm my understanding of how iTunes works. Once an account is set up on a PC (in this case my son's) and it has reset the music libary into its format making all previous links across the home network invalid, new files including photos can only be added from this PC and account? Does it really meant that any music or pictures created on another computer on the home network have to be transfered to his computer before they can be synched onto his iPod? Can the iPod be made to recognise photos dropped into the photo folder using Windows Explorer or does Apple use a format other than jpg?
Wish I had stuck to my guns and bought him a Creative Zen like mine (heresy on an Apple forum no doubt) but ease of use is clearly not on Apple's menu.

I suspect part of your problem may stem from letting iTunes reorganise or "Consolidate" the library. iTunes can be made to play nice by leaving music wherever it started - you can import tracks into the library from multiple locations either on the same computer or across a network.
In theory, if you do import into the iTunes Music folders it should copy those files in rather than moving them, so your original files as used by, for example, Windows Media Player, should still be there.
These options are at Edit > Preferences > Advanced > General:
- Keep iTunes Music folder organised
- Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to the library
The normal location for an iTunes library under Windows XP is at *C:\Documents and Settings\<User Name>\My Documents\My Music\iTunes>*. Did you move the default Windows *My Music* & *My Pictures* folders into the iTunes library?
My personal preference is to have both of these options disabled as I prefer to have control over the organisation of my files. If iTunes had to convert any WMA files to make them compatible, the orginals should remain, and the AAC/MP3 copies will be in the iTunes Music folder as will any tracks downloaded from the iTunes Store.
Protected purchased music & videos can be played on any of your computers (up to 5 at any one time) provided you install iTunes on the machine and authorise it for the account. For example I have iTunes on 3 of my home computers & one at work and happily play my music on any of these machines.
I'm a bit confused over your problems with photos. As far as I'm aware iTunes can be set to sync photos from a selected folder (& sub-folders) to the iPod. It doesn't move or alter the photos, but will add a folder called *iPod Photo Cache* into the top level folder. Rather than try to sync all my photos I have created a sub-folder of my iTunes folder called *iPod Photos* and in there I copy selected folders of pictures that I want to have on my various iPods.
Unlike Windows Media Player, iTunes doesn't automatically search for new music added into either it's own folder or other locations. If you add music to your network using other tools then these files will need to be manually imported into iTunes in order to enable them to be synced to the iPod. (Or you can download a tool called iTunes Folder Watch). For photos, however, they just need to be dropped into the selected photo sync folder.

    - I would start with
Removing and Reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows XP
    or
Removing and reinstalling iTunes and other software components for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8
However, after your remove the Apple software components also remove the iCloud Control Panel via Windows Programs and Features app in the Window Control Panel. Then reinstall all the Apple software components

Hi all. Never had any problems with iTunes over the past 6 or 7 years but suddenly (in last week or two) I can't play any songs with 10.6.1. I can select songs and get the speaker symbol, but the song does not play and the indicator stays at 0, while the play button is replaced by the pause button, as it normally does when a song is playing. I am using a one year old PC with Windows 7 and have had no other issues. Tried starting iTunes in safe mode...same result.Thoughts? Thanks.

  • IPod and iTunes Need Couples' Counseling?

OK, I've been having some really weird problems with connecting my new 4th gen iPod touch to my Windows Vista PC and getting them to recognize each other properly. I plug my iPod into my computer's USB port with the iPod USB cable, expecting my computer to recognize the iPod like it used to with my old one, and automatically bring up iTunes. But to my surprise, no such luck. The computer and the iPod don't connect properly, I guess. The weird thing is, if I open iTunes manually, the program will freeze, I will force-quit it through the task manager, and then if I disconnect and reconnect the iPod, the computer will recognize it and everything will be peachy. Until iTunes freezes again, and I have to shut it down again, and then even if I open iTunes manually, it will not recognize the iPod (which won't appear in the sidebar in iTunes the way it usually does). Anything I can do to get my iPod and iTunes back on the same page, so they will play nicely together again?
    Thanks!

What version of iTunes are you running on your PC? What about the iOS version on your iPod Touch? Is it possible that you are running iOS 4.2.1 on your iPod Touch and have an iTunes version lower than 10.1? If that is the case, try updating your iTunes to the newest release and see if that helps.

If iTunes purchases, delete and redownload by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
Otherwise delete and resync if they play OK in iTunes on the computer

My ipod and itunes both are skipping to another song about in the middle of the song. It doesn't happen on all songs...only some songs. I have reset the ipod, I have done a restore, I have reloaded itunes, I have updated the ipod but still am unable to figure out why. It did not used to do this. I can't figure out any pattern to the songs it does it on versus that it doesn't do it on. Some of the songs are purchased, some are imported, etc. We are running Windows 7.

how long have you had your ipod? mine did the same but after a while you need to get a new one because of the battery...

  • Reloading ipod and itunes on a new computer

I am trying to reload ipod and itunes on a new computer I recently bought. Because of disc management issues, I had these on an external drive (assigned the letter "F") on my old system. The letter "F" is assigned to a disc drive on my new computer. Every time I try to load ipod or itunes, the installer sequence tells me there is no available memory on drive F of the new machine (true enough), but will not let me re assign to a new drive.
suggestions on how to resolve this?
    many thanks. Bill

  • All songs erased from ipod and itunes

I'm trying to help a friend and learn in the process. When he turned on his ipod all the songs were gone and when itunes was opened to see about putting the 3000+ songs back on to the ipod the library had disappeared as well. He said he hadn't done anything, and he didn't back up any of the music. Is there anyway to rescue all of these songs from either itunes or the ipod? We bought and ran a program called Recover My Ipod, but it didn't work and I'm not to sure about it's reliability. Any help at all would be great it's windows xp.

Don't give up on looking for the songs.
You can use Explorer to search your computer for missing songs.
On the Start menu, click "Search".
    Select "All Files and folders".
In the "All or part of the file name" field, type the song name and then click "Search".
If you see the file you are looking for in the Search Results window, you can add it back into your iTunes library.
See: How to add songs from your hard drive to iTunes.
If they truly are gone from both the iPod and iTunes, have a read of this post which offers some hope.

I have two 2nd generation iPods and iTunes will no longer let me delete music from either one. If I select a song, "Delete" is gray in the menu and cannot be selected. What's happened? New iTunes not compatible?

In order to manually remove music from the iPod via iTunes, you need to have the Manually manage music and videos option checked from under each iPod's Summary tab.

  • Trouble synchronizing IPOD and ITunes

I had the Ipod and ITunes syncing up correcting under my old laptop under Windows XP Professional. I got a new laptop with Windows XP Professional. I copied all the songs from the old to the new laptops and syncing was ok. The new laptop developed a problem, and I got a new replacement. I copied all the songs to the second new laptop and tried to sync up the laptop. Songs play okay in itunes, but the Ipod was wiped clean. Any ideas? I would hate to go back to reload CD's from my collection. Thanks.

It says "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action Please  install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel" :/ it says this when i try to reinstall and uninstall

my older iPod my husband wants to use and his netbook does not have cd drive. How do I down load iPod and iTunes info for this product so he can now use it?

Your question(s) is/are a little hard to understand.  So your husband has an iPod as well as a netbook and he wants to be able to sync iPod with this netbook is that correct?  If so, he'll need to first download and install iTunes assuming the netbook is running some version of Windows such as 7, Vista, or XP.
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
As for importing or ripping music, he'll have to either use an external CD/DVD drive that is attached via USB or rip the songs to another PC you have with a built in CD/DVD drive.  Once you have imported them to the other computer, you can transfer the songs to an external hard drive or to his iTunes library via Home Sharing.
If this isn't quite what you were looking for, please clarify.

songs wiped from ipod and itunes, can i get them back?

If they were imported from CDs, and you had no other backup of them on your system or another drive, you'll need to reimport them from CDs again.
For music purchased from the iTunes, you can redownload each track at no cost via iCloud.  See this article for more details.

    Howdy all.
Very new to IPOD and iTunes but can I listen to a sample of any song before I purchase? If not then I can't see myself buying much.

Yes you can, and apple strongly recommends people do this before buying a song, album, video ect ect
For a song, video, or game you just double click the songs name to preview it.
