Ipod (and other mp3 player) no longer mount

When I connect my Nano to my Mac, the battery charge icon shows in the Nano display, but the Nano does not mount on the desktop nor does it show as being connected to the computer. I have a second mp3 player (Sandisk) and it does the same -- its display shows it connecting to the computer but it never shows on the desktop or in the sidebar of windows.
BTW, I have checked Finder preferences and Ipods are checked to be displayed. I have the iPod in disk mode.
Any help appreciated.
PowerMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Sorry can you see the other MP3 under the Disk
Utility?
No. I also checked the /Volumes directory in the terminal and it doesn't show there either. The player display says "USB connect."

    i got a creative zen for ny birthday and was asking for a ipod but oh well. i have a lot of music on my itunes. and for the life of my i cant figure out how to get my music in itunes over to my mp3 help me please someone

    Ok first off there is not going to be a good way sync a non apple mp3 palyer to iTunes. Here are your options
    - If the music you have was purchased though the iTunes music store then no other MP3 player will be able to play them. You will have to burn it to a CD and then import the files as MP3 files. Then you should be able to point your MP3 player software to where ever iTuens is saving your music lib. Be sure you only copy over the MP3 files and not the m4p, m4b, or m4a files. They will only play on iPods and though iTunes.
    - If you music is all MP3 files you RIPPED from CDs then you should be able to just point your MP3 palyer software to where ever iTuens is saving your music files and sync it.
    Either way if you copy new music file from your music player to your PC you will need to re-add the folder they were added from to iTunes or iTuens will not see them.

    I've got a 7 year old 30gb video ipod and the headphone port no longer works.
    I went to the Apple shop and they said it is now vintage and they can't fix my baby they offered me 10% to trade her in for a new model...
    what else can I try to save her?  I've tried cleaning and wiggling and restoring. Everything looks and feels ok.

    I've just found 'iPod Dock Connector Headphone Jack' on ebay it as an adapter that will connect my earphones via the wide ipod port better than 10% of something new

  • Thunar without XFCE, can't eject iPod and other travails.. [solved]

    I'm trying to get my Thunar set up to where it automatically shows my ipod when plugged in, but I can right click the icon to unmount it as well.
    I used the udev wiki to add a set of rules for automounting usb devices, so my ipod now automatically loads, but there are two problems.
    1. There are two icons for the ipod in the Thunar shortcuts pane. One says Apple iPod and shows an error on left click of 'Failed to mount "Apple iPod Music Player" - Given device "/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/ volume_part1_size_41094144" is not a volume or drive.'
    2. The second icon shows the name of my ipod and I can click it to view the drive, great, but on right clicking and choosing Unmount Volume, it shows an error of 'Failed to unmount "iPod" - The volume "iPod" was probably mounted manually on the command line.'
    And a seperate, but perhaps related problem is when I press the eject button on my CDROM drive, an error shows as 'Failed to eject "/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/storage_mode_DVD_RW_ND_3540A". Right clicking the icon in Thunar and choosing eject does work for this, though I'd prefer to be able to use the eject button.
    Does anyone have any ideas on a way to fix these problems?
    Thanks!

    Nonono...there's a bug with thunar-volman and ipods that causes them to load twice and whinge about it.  Note that loading two devices is, as far as I know, the intended outcome, since ipods have a mysterious second partition for storing the hopes and dreams of steve jobs himself.  I don't really know what it's for, but you can use an hal policy file (fdi file) to prevent hal from loading it.
    The bug has to do with thunar-volman trying to load it and failing.  You can view the bug here:
    http://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2789
    Actually, that's a command.  You'll need the first two diffs for the fix: thunar-volman-mount-only-mountable.diff and thunar-vfs-add-is-mountable.diff
    First, we'll fix thunar with the following PKGBUILD:
    # $Id: PKGBUILD,v 1.8 2007/06/01 22:28:43 tobias Exp $

    make DESTDIR=${startdir}/pkg install
    sed -i 's:x-directory/gnome-default-handler;::' ${startdir}/pkg/usr/share/applications/Thunar-folder-handler.desktop
    Stick thunar-vfs-add-is-mountable.diff in the same directory, and add the install file (call it thunar.install):

    update-desktop-database -q

    gtk-update-icon-cache -q -t -f usr/share/icons/hicolor
    op=$1
    shift
    $op $*
    and makepkg -i to install it.  Now let's tackle thunar-volman.
    First the PKGBUILD:

    cd ${startdir}/src/${pkgname}-${pkgver}
    cp $startdir/$patchname.diff $startdir/src/${pkgname}-${pkgver}
    patch -Np0 -i $startdir/src/${pkgname}-${pkgver}/$patchname.diff
    ./configure --prefix=/usr --sysconfdir=/etc --libexecdir=/usr/lib/xfce4 \
    --localstatedir=/var --disable-static
    make || return 1
    make DESTDIR=${startdir}/pkg install
    Then add the thunar-volman-mount-only-mountable.diff file, and the install file (call it thunar-volman.install):
    post_install() {
    gtk-update-icon-cache -q -t -f usr/share/icons/hicolor
    post_upgrade() {
    post_install $1
    post_remove() {
    gtk-update-icon-cache -q -t -f usr/share/icons/hicolor
    op=$1
    shift
    $op $*
    and makepkg -i again.
    They also provide an fdi in the bug report to prevent the extra piece from mounting, but I haven't gotten it to work.  At least the bugs are gone.
    BTW I found these trolling through the ubuntu gutsy launchpad.

  • Using an iPod with another mp3 player

    Hello,
    My wife got a Sansa Lil Monster mp3 player for Christmas and I know it will not work with iTunes. How do I transfer music onto her player without messing up my iPod?
    Thanks in advance.

    If you can drag songs to your MP3 player through Windows Explorer you just need to locate the files in the iTunes Music and copy them over. This should have no effect on your iPod. You won't be able to copy songs downloaded from the iTunes music store as they will only work on iPods or Motorola iTunes enabled phones but everything else is usable.

  • Ipod and another MP3 compatability

    We have an ipod, and recently purchased an Nextar MP3 player for our daughter. The songs are not downloading on the new MP3 player, either from itunes downloads or CDs. Is there a compatability issue, or how can I get the songs to download to the MP3?

    iTunes for Windows is only compatible with the iPod range or with the iTunes enabled phones from Motorola. iTunes purchases will only play on these devices. You may be able to get your player working with the aid of a third party helper program but that would only allow you to add non iTunes songs. Have a look at this one and see what you think: iTunes Agent -Windows
    Check out the manual for your player to see what method it uses to import songs. Most will have their own management software and many just operate as simple USB devices and you can drag tracks from the iTunes Music folder rather than through the iTunes interface.

  • Windows File compatibility, my iPod, and other questions

    After years of gripping about doing Video and Photo editing on my PC, I am considering switching to a Mac. But, given I have a heavy investment in PC hardware, I want to make sure I can leverage everything the best way possible. So...
    1.) I have a 20GB clickwheel iPod...any problem using this with a Mac? Need to be reformatted or anything?
    2.) Can you access ActiveX based websites without problems?
    3.) I have a Windows XP machine with 4 drives in RAID format. Could I use this as a common storage network drive for both Mac and PC's at the same time (for instance, store MP3's on it, and access and play them from either the iMac and other Windows PC's without a problem?). What about jpg formatted pictures? Any nuances between PC and Mac formats? (or is jpg really just jpg on either machine...I can open up the same picture on a Mac and a PC and see the exact same picture, without major color changes, etc.).
    I realize I need to reformat to FAT, but other than that, are their other problems I should know about? (I would like to use the RAID configuration to make sure I don't lose any data)
    That should start for now...
    Thanks - Jeff

    You can use it, and it will need to be reinitialised formatted for the Mac.

  • Software conflict between iPhoto and Sony MP3 player

    I am experiencing a major software conflict between iPhoto and my Sony MP3 player (model: NWZ-E443). In the past, whenever I connect the MP3 to my 2009 MacBook Pro, iPhoto always opened. I would simply close iPhoto and everything would be OK, though. But after upgrading iPhoto a few months ago via an upgrade download I am now unable to view images full-screen. Although thumbnails display OK, when I double-click on any of them to display full-screen, the MP3's 'Do Not Disconnect' image displays full-screen instead, even when the MP3 is not connected.
    I have tried reinstalling iPhoto from the original iLife disc, but this didn't work and my fear is that the Sony software has somehow corrupted every image single file in my library.

    Turns out my Mac put code on the mp3 player because after I reset the mp3 player to its 'factory settings', (erasing everything) it went back to normal and now shows up in the finder window.

  • Transfering Itunes store purchase to my PC or other mp3 player

    need help transfering Itunes purchase to my PC or other MP3 player

    Hello cpmurman,
    It sounds like you have a purchase on an iOS device that you want to transfer to your computer. You can use the following article named:
    iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1848
    After connecting your device to the computer and its icon appears in iTunes, go to the File menu, then Devices, and choose Transfer Purchases from "(Your device name)".
    Or, you can Show Sidebar from the View menu, and then right-click (Windows or Mac) or Control-click (Mac only) your device in the iTunes Source list, then choose Transfer Purchases from the shortcut menu that appears.
    Please note that this feature works only for items that were purchased on the iTunes Store. Any items imported from audio CDs or acquired from other sources will not copy from your device to the iTunes library. Please see this article for more details.
    Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Sterling

  • Problems with my KM4M-L and my MP3 Player

    I recently reformatted my hard drive and re-installed all OS and programs in hopes of solving a problem with my sound board.
    After the re-install I began noticing that my mp3 player would crash the explorer whenever I connected it and tried to open windows explorer to move files into it.
    The player is a Zen Touch and uses USB 2.0. Does anyone have any ideas what I could do to fix this problem? It was working fine before re-installing everything so I know the hardware is not the problem.
    Dj

    Umm... no psu problems. I have an Antec truepower 430, and I am (fortunately) not having any sound problems. The problem seems to come from plugging the player into the usb and then trying to get windows to recognize what's on the computer (ide-floppy and usb)
    I checked creative labs and as of yet, have not received a decent reply, other than "check that your drivers are up to date".

  • Problems with Ipod and Windows Media Player PLEASE HELP

    Ok i am not sure if this is the correct forum or not but i am having a problem. I have a Windows computer (Yes a windows computer please dont everyone yell at me) and i have a new ipod 30 gig video. Ok well when i put itunes on it changes all my music on my computer gets changed to AAC format and i cannot play music in windows media player. Ok well that is not my big issue. I make videos for church using windows movie maker and i cannot import music because nothing windows can recognize Itunes format which is AAC. well is there anyway so i can use itunes and still use WIndows Media Player and Windows Movie Maker... Any info will be greatly appreciated. THANKS ALL

    I believe Quicktime Pro (which is available for Windoze) is capable of opening any WMP files and then you just export it as iPod format. That is how I get video onto the iPod. The Music and Videos all can be placed onto your iPod through iTunes.
    So, if you are creating videos in your program, and want them on your iPod, then that is how you can do it.
    Videos on your iPod have nothing to do with the formatting of your music. But, as the earlier post stated, change your prefs in iTunes to import as MP3. But, your videos HAVE to be in MP4 or M4V format to work on the iPod.
    Good luck... and I'm a j3susfreak too
