Ipod appearing as 'E' drive, and unrecognised in iTunes

A couple of days ago I put my iPod onto charge and it threw up a message saying it was corrupted and to run the Chkdsk utility, which I did and and then restored the factory settings as I wanted to completely remove the music and start afresh. Since then, the ipod hasn't been showing up in iTunes at all. I've tried the 5 Rs to no avail, and tried altering it from the E drive to the G drive which has had no affect. I've also checked that the USB ports are fully powered up and they are. When I connect my iPod to my laptop, it recognises it as hardware and opens up an E drive folder, before apparantly disconnecting. Throughout all of this, the screen of the iPod flashes "do not disconnect". As it's currently the same price to buy a new iPod as it is to get it serviced, I will get a new one if I have to as I use mine all the time but I wondered if anyone had any words of wisdom? Many thanks!

  • IPod nano appears as USB drive, but unrecognised by iTunes for Windows

I have a video iPod, and my daughter has a iPod nano. Yesterday, when I tried to load new songs on the nano, iTunes failed to recognize it. I tried the 5 R's -- I am able to update the nano using the iPod updater, and I tried updating, as well as restoring. the iPod updater is able to see the nano and I was able to restore. So now I have a nano that I am able to navigate the menus of, but thee is no music on it of course.
The nano is not recognized by a second computer as well. The video iPod is recognized by both computers, so I suspect the problem is with the nano.
We use the same user account for both devices, and it has worked without a flaw for the past 2 months.
    Does any one have suggestions?
    Kumar.
Pentium 4, 2 GHz, 512 MB Windows XP

    Problem solved
The fact that the Nano did not work on both computers was a coincidence.
Apple uses a special driver for the iPod disk (I suppose there is a packet filter or some special function in their driver that must sit between iTunes and the standard flash drive driver).
I updated the Nano again, and deleted as many of the hidden USB drivers as possible from the device manager. Then I connected the Nano to a new USB port and that did the trick.
I have not tried attaching the Nano to the old USB port yet.
Windows is terrible at managing drivers -- there is no systematic way of figuring out associations between drivers and software components. Perhaps someone from Apple could post a detailed method paper on how to identify and get rid of drivers installed when you use iTunes and the iPod, so that Windows can pick it up again.
When I connected my video iPod yesterday, it prompted me to update it, but I am the wiser now. I am going to avoid updating iTunes or the iPod software as far as possible.

I recently had to replace my hard drive and lost my iTunes library.  When I try to transfer the content from my iPod to iTunes on the new hard drive (same computer), it would only let me transfer iTunes store purchases. How can I complete the transfer of all the content on the iPod back onto the computer?

From the OP: "My old computer got a virus and when that happened all my music was lost. "
They don't have the music on their computer so they cannot transfer the iTunes folder, from the computer to their iPod and then to the new computer. And if they try to enable disk use on the iPod it will erase all the music that is on it. The method you cited is moving the files in a data format using the iPod as a flash drive. It doesn't work if they are in music format. That is why I suggested Yamipod.

Ah yes school boy error there out of frustration and discontent..
My issue is with music/apps/films etc not downloading from iTunes / App Store.
They initially fail and message is displayed stating unable to download / purchase at this time, yet if I retry it says I've already purchased (?) or alternatively I go to the purchased section and there they are waiting with the cloud symbol..
However some items get frozen in the download window and cannot be retried or deleted. Message appears stating to tap to retry, but even if you stole every bath and sink in the uk you'd still not have enough taps.
I post here as the iTunes guys are useless in there 'help' and have only advised posting here or phoning apple, at my expense, to explain a problem that could be rectified by forwarding my original email to a techie. However the tech team apparently don't have an email address as they're from ye olde Middle Ages..!
    Anyways I digress.
So I tried sync to pc, but instead of showing the file as ready to listen/use/view, the iCloud symbol shows and I'm back to square one as the item is unable to download..
At frustration station waiting for a train from pain...
All my software is up to date, and had all worked fine prior to the last big iOS update that resulted in all the changes in display and dismay.

I redirected iTunes to an external drive and moved my iTunes library and folder, but my hard drive is still low on space.  How can I be sure that my music is all on the external HD ONLY, especially with the new iCloud technology?  It doesn't look like I created any more space by doing this, AND I totally lost all my iTunes playlists.  I'm not sure if because I added old library materials manually if this messed up my playlists, or if the new location is just not reading my moved library.  In any case, I followed step by step instructions and found a few holes and thought I'd just "figure it out" but I guess I'm not as smart as I thought since I'm still scratching my head many hours later.
    Thanks for any support ;-)

Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the option (alt) key (shift on Windows) so you get a prompt to select a library, then guide it to the 'iTunes Library.itl' file in the moved iTunes folder.
If this is to a new computer and you put the copied iTunes folder in the default location of Macintosh HD > Users > *User Name* > Music  then you don't even need to start with the option key held down, iTunes will automatically look for it there.  (Make sure there isn't anything already in the iTunes folder there that you want to keep since you will be replacing it with the one you are moving.)

  • Can I create a "new" iTunes library on an external hard drive and transfer my iTune library to save space on my laptop

Can I create a "new" iTunes library on an external hard drive and transfer my iTune library to save space on my laptop hard drive

Yes. Just copy all your music to a folder on your external. Then delete the music on your computers hard drive.
It is not quite that simple. If you do that you will end up with many broken links and will have to re-create your library from scratch .  iTunes does not like it when you move or rename files or folders and doing so between drives is guaranteed to result in exclamation marks indicating you have broken the links to all your media files.
If you are content with moving the whole library to an external drive (usually the best thing for most people), try:

  • Help with: itunes, ipad2, ipod, a reformated hard drive and an external drive.

    Help!!!
I have an acient 64GB hard drive PC and a 1TB external drive.  I have copies of my itunes for my ipad2 , and my hubs itunes for his ipod in the external drive.  The 64GB crashed because it was so full that the virus program couldn't even run... so long story short I now have a re-formatted hard drive with 48.4GB of free space.
My question is how do I go about getting my itunes and hubs itunes back on to the reformatted drive?  or is it possible to leave the itunes on my external drive and have both our devices boot to the external drive when they are connected to bypass the ancient hard drive all together as I don't wish to ever overload that thing again.....
    Thanks

I have even erased my entire libraray onloy to have to go back and spoend hours resynching with the old PC. How do I get this done. • IPod appears on BOTH desktop and iTunes

My (video) iPod shows up on both the desktop and inside iTunes. I have to eject it from both locations before disconnecting.
The problem is - upon connecting - I receive the same error 4 times. "The iPod is in use and cannot be updated." I have to click "ok" 4 times. Then, it updates the iPod.
Should the iPod appear in both locations? Why do I receive the error 4 times?
    Thanks.

If your iPod is enabled for disk use it mounts on the desktop and in iTunes. It also appears mounted on the desktop for the time it takes to update the iPod if you have it set to auto-sync but not disk enabled. However ejecting it from iTunes should also un-mount it from the desktop

  • How to save my podcasts on iPod after wiping drive and re-installing iTunes

I wiped my computer and re-installed iTunes. I have a ton of podcasts on my iPod, however, and I don't know how to sync new podcast downloads while saving the podcasts currently on the iPod. If there's no "built-in" way to do this with iTunes, is there anything else that I can try?

  • Help - moved itunes folders to external drive and now my itunes is totally

A few months ago, in order to free up space on my c drive, i had to purchase an external drive - everything i installed via itunes since that date has been on the hard drive and everything was fine.
Last night i needed more room on my C drive so i stupidly moved the remaining itunes folders from my C drive to my F drive - unfortunately, when i opened itunes it was blank.
i've tried a few things - including adding the folder from the F drive - and that retrieved about 80% of my music/videos and the last playlists i had - however, they were all missing songs - even if all the songs that should be included remained on my itunes
i began the tedious process of manually adding files back in but soon realized this doesn't help itunes consider this the same ipod as what's still on my actual ipod.
*What I'd like to do (if possible) is to wipe itunes clean and somehow restore everything on my ipod into itunes so that i retrieve not only the songs and videos but also the playlists that i've spent way too much time building. At this point i fear that the various components to my ipod are in too many files on my external drive to be easily restored another way (though if i'm wrong please let me know)*
sadly (as this story might suggest) I am borderline computer illiterate - I've read a few posts suggesting some sort of software online (something the apple help line also made an "off the record" remark about) - but I can't for the life of me figure out which i would use or how to do this without risking the contents of my existing ipod (which has the playlists and songs/video I want to reestablish).
*Can anyone possibly suggest how to best handle this and walk me through it in painstakingly basic and specific detail? I would be forever grateful.*
    Thanks

iTunes uses the iTunes Library files - in particular the iTunes Library.itl file - to keep track of where your song files are located as well as playlist and related information.
Most likely in moving your folders around iTunes has been confused to such an extent that it created a new Library file. With a bit of luck you might still be able to find the old file which would restore your old Library.
So the first thing you want to do is look around your computer and make a note of any iTunes Library.itl files you can find. Generally speaking you'll find them in the iTunes folders on your system and depending on how you've been moving the folders - i.e. whether you "cut" them or "copied" them - you may still find at least one one on your F: drive and some on your C: drive.
Having noted where they are you know want to check each of them out as described in this article in the Apple Knowledge Base. In following those instructions you want to select the Choose Library option and use the pop-up window that appears to zero in on the various .itl files you've located.
Remember that each Library file will show a different Library in iTunes - perhaps slightly different, perhaps completely different - and if the first one isn't what you're looking for you'll have to close iTunes and repeat the procedure by selecting one of the other .itl's.
    Post back for any clarification.

  • IPod appears in My Computer but not in iTunes.

I have a 30GB Video iPod, & everytime I plug it in I get a an error message that says:
iPodService Module has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
I'm not to sure what to do, I've tried the 5 r's & nothing helps to fix this problem.

    hi haptic!
I had it all working fine until I formatted my pc. Now windows recognizes it but not iTunes or the updater, and I don't get any error message.
just checking. have you investigated these possibilities yet?

  • Suggestion on pocket drive and migration of iTunes to Pocket Drive

My computer is quickly getting filled up with all my music. I orginally used the default settings and had iTunes put all my music in My Documents-->My Music.
Since I am running out of space on this computer, I am thinking of getting a pocket drive and migrating my music there.
    I have 2 questions:
    1. Does anyone have any suggestions for pocket drives? I want one that will work/interface with iTunes well. I am looking at either:
    1. Seagate - 160GB USB 2.0 Hard Drive with Pushbutton Backup - ST3160026A-RK
    2. Seagate - Seagate USB 2.0 Pocket Hard Drives 5GB -ST650211U-RK
    3. Iomega Silver Series 250GB USB 2.0 Hard Drive - 33215
    4. Fantom Titanium 300GB USB 2.0 External Hard Drive -TFDU300
    5. BUSlink 60GB 2.5" USB Hard Drive - DL-60-U2
Any suggestions/reviews for how any of these work with iTunes?
2nd question: How do I migrate my iTunes to this hard drive once I get it without messing up my iPod? Is there a suggested process for how to do this so I do not create problems for myself down the road?
    Thanks,

    Anybody? Higher level iTunes experts?
Sorry for the lenght of the post :-)  Just trying to be as clear as possible.
    The question is actually simple.
How do I transfer the 10.7 MBP library to the second internal HDD of the Mac Mini, so that iTunes will work on this MM, without losing filepaths, ratings and playlists? And without having to copy it to the boot SSD disk first which will be too small to hold the library.
