Ipod appears in finder but not itunes

Hi,
ipod nano 3rd gen: see it in finder as a volume, it opens itunes BUT does not appear in list of devices!!
tried hard reset, restart, etc. Have the latest itunes and have tried to "see" the ipod on different macs, running different OS's
Of note: the ipod was possibly tangled with : my daughter tried to have some music transferred on her mom's PC, believe it or not. In so doing, they drag/dropped the files on the disk image (I guess). I have since deleted the folders and transferred contents into itunes.
The ipod starts up fine except it starts up as a "new ipod " each time, requesting language before being used.
Can't sync it since it doesn't appear in itunes...
Any ideas. I've looked into the forums but no success so far
Thanks for your numerous hepfull replies

EXACTLY SAME PROBLEM. I FOLLOWED THIS POST ON ANOTHER FORUM AND IT REALLY WORKED!!
GOOD LUCK

Re: I have a ipod nano 5th generation that can not be found on itunes on Mac
It sounds like the iPod needs a Restore using iTunes.  But you're saying iTunes does not see the iPod, even though Finder sees it, so if iTunes does not see it, you can't do aRestore.  It definitely does not appear in the iTunes sidebar, under DEVICES, correct?
I just did the following with my 5th gen iPod nano and Mac (just to confirm it does no harm), so you can try it, if you want.  This procedure will erase the nano, so I hope all the songs (and other content) on it now are all synced from your Mac's iTunes library.  I have previously done this with older "hard drive" iPods before, but not a nano.
Put the nano into Disk Mode, as before (link in previous post).
With iTunes NOT running, run Disk Utility and connect the nano.  The nano should appear in the Disk Utility sidebar.  Select "Apple iPod Media" in the sidebar, NOT the iPod's "volume" that is indented under it (so the DEVICE should be selected, not the device's volume).  Over to the right, go to the Erase tab.
Set Format to Mac OS Extended (Journaled).  You can Name it whatever you want, or leave it "Untitled."  Click Erase.  This will erase (reformat) the iPod's flash storage.  Because the DEVICE was selected in the sidebar, it will also re-partition it (to one partition).  It should take less than one minute to complete, then Eject the iPod.  It should say OK to Disconnect on nano's screen.  But you don't need to disconnect it.
Use the Reset procedure (link in previous post) to take the nano out of Disk Mode.  Run iTunes.  Hopefully, iTunes will see the iPod (in "recovery mode"), and offer to Restore it.  If you can then Restore it successfully, your nano should be working properly again.
NOTE:  If there is a hardware problem with your nano, erasing it with Disk Utility may not work.  And that will leave your nano non-functional.

  • IPod appears in Finder,  but not in iTunes.  iPod in Disk Mode

I have a 5th Gen, 30G iPod that cut out in mid-song this morning. The hard drive starting making the "tick, tick, tick...pause...tick, tick, tick" sound. I reset it and it does not show any of the music on it (only pictures). When I plugged it into the computer, it appears on the desktop (eventually) and in Finder, but not in the iTunes Source List.
After working my way through the first 4 of the 5 R's, I have come to Restore. Since I couldn't get the iPod to appear in the Source Menu, I haven't been able to hit the Restore button in iTunes. So I have placed the iPod into Disk Mode, and reattached it to the computer. Still nothing, just it icon on the destop, but nothing in iTunes.
I assume that the Data is Corrupt on the Hard Drive of the iPod, but how can you restore an iPod if you can't get iTunes to recognize it?!
    Any ideas are greatly appreciated!

    Hey there,
Have you had a chance to work through the troubleshooting solutions offered in this Apple support document? If not, it would be a good place to start. Hope it helps.

  • IPod nano 5th Gen appears in Finder but not iTunes

I am trying to restore my 5th Generation iPod Nano, but it will not show up in iTunes 12.0.1.26. It does however appear in Finder as a disk image allowing me to access certain directories, like Calendars, Contacts, DCIM, Notes, and Recordings. I've tried resetting the iPod, putting it in Disk Mode, etc. I've gone through all the support. I've tried using iExplorer. Does anyone know anything else I can try?

    Hi jthias,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that your iPod nano is not appearing in iTunes and you have already completed some great troubleshooting. In this situation, I would suggest continuing troubleshooting by completing the steps in the attached iPod nano Troubleshooting Assistant.

  • Re: ipod touch 4th gen. iPod appears in windows but not itunes

it works on others computers but not my own. how can i get my itunes to recognise my ipod? i went through the troubleshooting assistant and it still doesn't work

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
    -  Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. A warranty is not necessary.

  • TS1363 "iPod: Appears in Windows but not in iTunes" Isn't working!

I've tried all of the things in the "iPod: Appears in Windows but not in iTunes" but none of them work.
I'm on Windows 8 and those are the instrucations I've followed.
The only thing I haven't done is reset my computer to factory mode but that Isn't an option for me cause I got saved games that can't be backed up.
I've literaly tried everything in that help page and it doesn't work.
All I get is the iTouch charging, asking me to trust the computer, I say trust, nothing happens, I check the device manager and it doesn't shw the USB no matter what, I restart the ipod services and the apple software services, nothing happens, I completely take dwn my McAfee firewall and scanning system, it doesn't work, restarting it to make sure no viruses attack, uninstalled Razer Synapsis because it has been a pain in the butt before, that doesn't work, I emptied my Temp file and that didn't work, And in the end the iTouch is charging but not even being see by Itunes and no updates, restarts, reinstallations, uninstallations, checking, researching, and anything else I can do works.
Can someone please explain why apple tech is such a pain when it comes to Windows 8 and how I can fix this without losing 2 years worth of school and saved games?!?!?!?

Try a full teardown as in Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates?
A recent poster to forum is suggesting uninstalling WMP from Windows?
Connect the device to a different compuer and back it up there. You should be able to copy off the library to a portable hard drive. See also Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.

  • IPOD detected by Windows but NOT iTunes – possible solution

I have a new 30GB Video IPOD with an AMD PC running Windows XP SP2 and like many others posting on this site, my iTunes stopped recognizing my IPOD. ITunes did work correctly immediately after my initial software installation and I was able to sync some music, but it failed thereafter and I was unable to add any more files. Like many other users, I tried all suggested fixes including the 5R’s, uninstalling and re-installing the software, changing selective start-up items using “MSCONFIG”, etc. Nothing worked – until I tried the following…
    1) Uninstall iTunes & IPOD updater software using Windows Add/Remove Software tool in the Start/Settings menu
    2) Reboot Windows
    3) Connect IPOD to USB port (Windows should detect the IPOD)
    4) Run the original IPOD CD installation disk, load the IPOD Updater software (but not iTunes …yet)
    5) The IPOD Updater software loads first, so when prompted to load iTunes, wait (you may minimize the window), go into the IPOD Updater software (Start/Programs menu) and open the IPOD Updater window by clicking on the icon. If your system works like mine, the IPOD should now be recognized and the “RESTORE” button should now be available. Don’t click the “RESTORE” button – just leave this window open (minimize the window if you wish) and go back to the iTunes install window.
    6) Continue with the installation of the iTunes software.
    7) Once installed try opening the iTunes program to see if IPOD is detected (at this point it still didn’t work for me)
    8) With the IPOD still connected, and the IPOD updater window still open, go to Add/Remove Software (Start/Settings) and click on “remove” iTunes – you’ll be prompted to “Repair” or “Remove”. Choose REPAIR. Once this process is complete, try opening iTunes again – at this point my computer now recognized the IPOD

i could do everything fine up until step 6), the installation of itunes. when i tried to, with the ipod updater window still open, it said it could not continue without closing the updater program. any suggestions?

  • IPod appears in Windows but not in iTunes

    Hello everyone,
My problem is my itunes is not recognizing my Ipod touch for some reason. I did follow Apple's advice on their support page and also 'googled' it but unfortunately it resulted in frustration. I think it's missing drivers, at least when I followed the instructions it said go to my device manager and find Ipod under my serial bus, I did check the whole manager but no 'Ipod'. The ipod works fine, when I plug it in, it beeps indicating it recognizes it, and it says it's charging. But when I go to itunes nothing is there, no indication that it's plugged in. I did reinstall my itunes (the most recent one) and played with the registry also, nothing changed the result. I spent couple hours working on it and it's driving me nuts, hopefully some apple itouch guru can help me out. .. regret uninstalling itunes to begin with, this is insane. Oh by the way I also deleted the temp file if that helps.
    Cheers!

    Morning,
Your answer got my itunes to reconize my ipod but now i'm getting another error! When I plug it in "iTunes has detected an ipod in recovery mode. You must restore this ipod before it can be used with iTunes" correct me if i'm wrong but normally that happens when it's jailbreak right? Mine is in factory state, I really don't understand why I have to go through hoops to get this ipod to work because I uninstalled itunes. Well anyway when I hit restore and click 'Restore and Update', it goes through it's process of apple appearing on the screen and itunes saying 'preparing ipod for restore'. Then I recieve the error "The ipod "ipod" could not be restored. An unknown error occured (1611)." After I click ok, another one pops up "itunes could not connect to this iPhone because an unknown error occured (0xe8000065)." It's an ipod touch not an iphone.
What i've done was restart my computer, restart the ipod and still occurring the same way. Also tried differnt usb ports. I think I have to reinstall itunes.

  • IPod appears on desktop but not in iTunes

When I connect my iPod clickwheel (via Firewire or USB) to my MacBook Pro (OS X 10.5.7) it mounts on the desktop and I can open it as a disk volume; but iTunes (8.2) doesn't see it at all. iTunes does see my iPhone. Restarting makes no difference. Disconnecting and reconnecting also makes no difference.
    Any ideas?

  • Help please! Ipod Classic appears in Windows but not Itunes: Tried Troubleshooter and TS1363

    Hi There,
My ipod classic won't sync with itunes It appears in windows 7 and itunes even opens when the device is attached. Unfortunately the device doesn't appear in itunes and consequently won't sync. I have tried using the troubleshooter but to no avail and have also tried the suggestions in the help article TS1363, also to no avail! Performing the diagnostic in itunes reveals that the ipod is attached and performing correctly according to itunes but there is a problem syncing. I'm stuck as to what to do next! Help!
Hoping you can make me smile again
    Thank you
    Fortissimo
Windows 7 and I20GB Ipod Classic and Latest version of itunes 10.3.1

I had the same problem with iTunes 10.3.1.55 on WinXP and the steps in the link referred to here https://discussions.apple.com/message/15394615#15394615 fixed it for me.

  • IPod shows up in Finder but not itunes - Have already tried suggestions

    I have a 30gb ipod video & am using a Macbook
I wanted to get files off my ipod that werent in my itunes so I downloaded yamipod. This worked for a bit then stopped working so I deleted the program.
Now when i plug my ipod into my computer it shows up in finder and says 'do not disconnect' on screen but doesn't appear in itunes. I reset the ipod, re-downloaded itunes but no luck. I would have restored it but you can't do this if it won't show up in itunes (which makes no sense!)
So I plugged my ipod into my flatmates PC (using the same usb cable) and it showed up in their itunes just fine. Then it said that there was an update for my ipod, so i downloaded it. And it said there were faults or something on my ipod & it would fix them, so i clicked ok.
After these things it said my ipod would restart and should reappear in itunes. It restarted but now will not show up in their itunes.
Now when I plug my ipod into my mac again itunes jumps to the front of screen, as if it knows there is something there, but it just wont show up.
I have looked through all sorts of discussions & can't find the answer. Please help.

I'm having exactly the same problem with my 60GB 5G iPod Video. This happened "spontaneously" in that I did nothing I know of to affect my iPod's connection to my iTunes library. My iPhone still syncs fine with the same cable.

  • IPod recognized by PC but not iTunes or Updater

I have a first generation iPod that was a gift last November. It worked fine and I'm in love with it. A few months ago my motherboard and processor got fried and I had it replaced. (Although I could have sworn I had XP Home Edition before and now I have XP Pro...)
Last Wednesday, I plugged in my iPod (using firewire) and got a message that I needed to run the software updater, so I downloaded the updater and my only option was to restore to factory settings, so I restored. It said to unplug and replug to continue restore and I did and left it sit for HOURS, and then overnight. I had to turn off the computer the next day, so I had to force it to release.
Since then I've tried every fix on Apple's pages for each error I got... I got the access privileges error, which I managed to fix (I think by pure dumb luck on that one)... then I got the Internal Service Error which got fixed and has now returned.
I can see my iPod as drive I in My Computer and when I click on it, it tells me the drive is not formatted, would I like to format it and I click no. iTunes works great, the Updater doesn't work because I keep getting the internal error again. When the iPod is available to me, I can play with it just like it was out of the box... ie.. no songs... I've run the diganostics tests in the diagnostic mode and they all say ok. So, I've got an iPod that works great except for one problem... I can't put any music on it!
Bottom line is, I think I've tried everything I possibly could... does anybody else have any other ideas? I hope so because I can't afford a new iPod and have become very attached to having one!

  • IPod recognized by Vista but not iTunes

Hi, I have a perplexing problem. iTunes is suddenly not recognizing my
iPod. Vista does (though has renamed it Apple iPod), but it does not
open (when I try, Explorer hangs)
Nothing happened b4 to provoke this behavior. I uploaded some podcasts
on Friday, went out of town (w/out the iPod), and came back Monday
night. Tuesday, I try to update the iPod and it doesn't show up in
iTunes, but Vista wants to reformat it!
I try the following (suggested in the Apple support pages):
    * I restart the iPod service
    * I completely uninstall iTunes
    * I reset the iPod
Each time I connect the iPod to Vista, it asks if I want to reformat it. I grudgingly restored to see if that would help. I even reformatted it (Quick Format) even though I had heard that was bad. Still doesn't show up in iTunes, but the iPod is happy as a clam, albeit empty of any songs/podcasts.
Any ideas? Oh, and I have an ancient 3G iPod w/ doc connector. After 5
years, (and 3 batteries) it still works like a champ.

You need to install iTunes in order to install the necessary drivers.
