IPod as a playlist

I just got a replacement iPod and when I connect it, it appears as a playlist in the source menu not a device.
I have already stopped and started my iPod service with the computer manager.
any help would be great!

a few typos:
"bu" should be "by"....fill up my ipod by right clicking...
"Sunddenly" of course should be "Suddenly"

  • HT1386 I cannot sync my iPod with the Playlists that I want. For example, I have all the songs in my classical Playlist checked but it doesn't appear in my iPod after syncing. Also I don't get an opportunity to review sync options.

I cannot sync my iPod with the Playlists that I want. For example, I have all the songs in my Classical Playlist checked, but after syncing it does not appear on my iPod. Also, there are no opportunities to change syncing options. None are listed in the left column of my iTunes screen.

    Hello Jefflo64,
Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with syncing music to your iPod.  For issues like this, I recommend resyncing the music to your iPod.
If you are syncing automatically, resync content to the iPod by unchecking "Sync Music" and clicking "Apply,"  then checking "Sync Music" and clicking "Apply" again.
You can find the syncing steps in the following article:

  • IPod to iTunes Playlist loads

I have a 30GB iPod that the battery is dying on. I have it synced with my Mac via iTunes. Can I "backload" my playlists onto my iTunes?

Actually it doesn't appear to offer that. It seems that I can only go from the Mac to the iPod (in creating playlists). I'm trying to go from the iPod to the Mac. If I use the autosync it says that it will replace every all songs and playlists on the iPod with whateve is on the Mac. I'm trying to avoid this if possible. Is there a way that I am missing?

  • Ipod scrolls through playlists uncontrollably

When I press play, my ipod scrolls through playlists and songs uncontrollably. I tried rebooting to no avail. Any tips? Do I have to restore to factory settings?

Having the same problems! Thanks for the advice.
Attempted a restore but then connecting the ipod, iTunes does not recognize it to sync any music. Did I not perform the restore correctly?
I had a problem with a playlist once in that the live updating was working properly. The apple tech support line assisted b/c I could not get the ipod updater to load. As I go through the sequence of prompts and I choose the hard drive it tells me it will take 0 bytes to install and on the next screen the items to install are faded and listed as disabled and I cannot install them. It is some glitch that was easily overcome but they went through it so fast the details are no longer clear and I failed to write it down. Trust me, I am kicking myself. Sound familiar?
    Any ideas, please?

  • My old computer crashed and deleted my iTunes media file with all my playlist. However, my iPod has the playlist I lost on the computer. How can I replace (reverse synch?) my iPod media information back onto my (now reinstalled) virgin iTunes media folder

My old computer crashed and deleted my iTunes media file with all my playlist. However, my iPod has the playlist I lost on the computer. How can I replace (reverse synch?) my iPod media information back onto my (now reinstalled) virgin iTunes media folder?

Yes it's possible to sync music back from a iPod back into iTunes that (I assume) wasn't purchased on the iTunes Store.
Apple allows iTunes Store purchases on devices to be reversed back into iTunes, just not cd rips and stuff like that. For that it's a one way trip to the device from iTunes.
I likely can't suggest such software here, but if you visit iLounge you can ask what is the latest software that works for your platform.
Really it only takes a mere few minutes to backup your iTunes Library and stick in a few cd/dvd's or a external drive. iTunes even has a menu command for it to make it oh so simple. Please use it and backup all your data.
Hard drives fail, computers burn up, thieves steal, stuff gets forgotten. Plan for something happening because it will.
    Good Luck

  • I'm suddenly unable to sync my iPod because the playlists no longer exist.

I plugged my ipod in like normal, and when I hit the button to sync it, it said that "songs on the ipod cannot be synced because all of the playlists selected for syncing no longer exist".
when i unplugged my ipod, all of the songs were gone, but they were still in the itunes library on the computer.
    please help!

You get this problem when the option 'Sync Music - Selected playlists' is being used to sync your iPod. If the playlist selected is deleted from iTunes the iPod no longer has a location to sync from and you get an error. (Syncing selected playlists by the way is a useful setting to use when the iPod is smaller than the iTunes library). However you can make a new one or make use of an existing one.
Open iTunes and create a playlist to update your iPod from, call it -My iPod for example (the dash will position it at the top of the playlists in Sources). You can make it a smart playlist that picks the songs for you or just a normal one and drag whatever content you want to have into the playlist. If you are making a smart playlist limit it to just less than the size of your iPod (for example 3700MB for a 4G iPod Nano. Now connect your iPod and when it appears in the Source list click on the iPod icon to bring up the preference tabs in the main pane. Go to the Music tab and choose Sync Music and the Selected playlists radio button. Choose the playlist you just made from the selection and click Apply. You can also sync from any existing playlists by choosing the same setting, you just need to make sure that the size of the playlists don't exceed the capacity of your iPod:
How to create a Smart Playlist with iTunes
    Syncing Music to iPod
To make a random playlist go to File>New Smart Playlist.
    Uncheck "Match the following rule"
Check "Limit to" put "3700" in the number box, choose "MB" from the first list box, choose "Random" from the next list box. Check "Live Updating"
When you want to change the selection in the smart playlist just delete everything in it and it will add a new selection. When you want to change the normal playlist just delete out what you don't want and drag in a new selection.

  • How can I replace my iTunes Library with the contents of my iPod, including the playlists?

I tried transferring the purchases, but it didn't move my playlists over. I have also tried backing my old library up to a disc, and putting it in my new computer, but it still didn't transfer my playlists.
Is there any way I can transfer my old itunes library from my old computer to my new computer, including the playlists?
I have heard people talk about replacing itunes with the contents of the ipod, but I'm not sure how to do it.

if you have an iPod Touch, there are PhoneView and iRip.

  • IPOD Mini - Updating Playlists

When I try to update my IPOD Mini, I get the following error message:
"Songs on the IPOD cannot be updated because all of the playlists selected for updating no longer exist"
    How do I fix this?

Use the instructions in this article to change the iPod's synchronization mode to one of the other two options, or create a new playlist and add that to the list of playlists to sync to the iPod.

  • 1st Generation iPod Touch & Smart Playlists

My 1st Generation iPod Touch will not sync my Smart Playlists. After syncing, the Playlists appear under my iPod touch in the iTunes 11 sidebar. On my iPod Touch all songs/tracks for the playlists load into the iPod's library and can be accessed. Playlist names however either do not appear on the iPod or the ones that do appear may be empty. I've used these same Playlists for many years and have only recently started seeing this. I have done a full restore of my iPod Touch, the OS software is up to date and I've tried creating new Playlists with the same results. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

That symptom is one of those covered here:

  • After i have compiled playlists on my ipod and then connect it to the pc, upon disconnecting the ipod touch all playlists have not been saved .I can only save playlists that i compile on the pc.an error sometimes pops up saying data sync cannot be saved.

When i have saved genius playlists or compile my own on my ipod touch they do not save when i then connect to my pc.
Ocasionally a message saying cannot sync data services pops up.but i always lose the playlists.
The only way i can save playlists is to edit them when i am connected to the pc.  HELP ?

If you get an error that says can't backup, try moving the existing backup file to a safe location and thry again. again. You can find the location of the backup file here:

  • ITunes 9 no longer supports iPod to sync playlists made with podcast files

With the last iTunes upgrade my iPod can't recognize those playlists I had previously created with podcasts files downloaded using iTunes. They just have disappeared from the list in the section Playlists of my old iPod 5G. The same occurs with a new iPod Touch 3G, thus it seems to be related with some change in my computer's software rather than the iPod.
With this last v.9 upgrade all my old podcasts had also disappeared from the section Podcasts but I eventually I could find the cause and fixed it: By default iTunes 9 is configured so that those podcasts which have been totally or partially listened are not synchronize. This can be easily modified opening the Podcasts tab in the iTunes device settings and change the options in 'Sync Podcasts'.
I'd really appreciate I could transfer again my podcast playlists to my iPod. I find rather disappointing to lose the iPod feature I've probably being used most frequently during the last 3 years. It'd thank anyone who could tell me some way to go around this constriction. Otherwise I hope this feature to be supported by iTunes in future upgrades.

I noticed that the same topic was posted in September as an iPhone issue. The discussion also centered around smart playlists. Although a few workarounds were posted, mostly involving changing the podcast genre to "Music" from "Podcast", I have not been able to sync these playlists.
I want to simply create a playlist with podcasts and sync these playlists to my ipod Touch. This is handy, if not essential, for safe enjoyment of my podcasts while driving.
Is Apple considering a fix for this ?! Or is there a workaround ?

  • My Itunes playlist library got wiped out. I would like to copy all the playlists on my IPOD to the playlist area on Itunes Music but can't drag from my IPOD to that area.

My  Itunes library got wiped out, no playlists any more. I would like to copy what is on my IPOD back to Itunes because I have purchased a newer IPOD nano. I am not able to drag and drop any of the music on my IPOD to a new playlist name on Itunes.

Restore your iTunes library from your most recent backup of it.  If you've not had the foresight to maintain a backup of your library see turingtest2's user tip on Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device, which lists several methods - some using third-party tools - to accomplish this.  There is no facility in iTunes itself to transfer media (other than iTunes Store purchases) from any iDevice to iTunes, and iDevices are not designed or suitable for data storage.
