IPod as a vault?

I have an iPod that I no longer use (40GB iPhoto) and since it's a 4G, it runs firewire. I would like to use it as a vault for Aperture, until I need even more vault space. I stopped by the SF store yesterday, and the luck of the draw got me the "I'm too hip for the room" guy in the watch cap, who simply gave me a gorilla-grunt to my question, and then he lost interest. He's not the norm there, but it put me off.
Second; I imported the entire contents of iPhoto Library to Aperture, and while the pop-up says I can now delete said library; do I delete the folder User>iPhoto Library, or merely its contents. Off course, I'm not in a hurry to do this until I have a safe backup.
Third; I have two thousand photos of one topic,in eleven albums, under one folder name, among those that I imported into Aperture, and I want to start classifying them. I created a project, named it, then dragged the eleven albums into it. Now that I want sub-folders for each album, it won't allow it; what am I doing wrong?
Also, I want to create Smart Folders within each of those eleven albums.
I notice that in the sample photos that come with Aperture, the hierarchy is different from iPhoto's.
20 iMac G5, 12 Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   40GB iPhoto, 4GB Nano, 60GB ViPod
20 iMac G5, 12 Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   40GB iPhoto, 4GB Nano, 60GB ViPod

First, no reason you shouldn't be able to use the iPod as a vault. Make sure "enable firewire disk mode" is enabled. Also note, it won't be blazingly fast.
Second, you can delete the entire iPhoto library. I'd suggest backing it up to DVD (or set of DVDs) first... can't hurt to have a permanent snapshot.
Third, it doesn't look like you can have a subfolder of an album. You can have subfolders of projects, though. The critical things in Aperture are projects -- they are where photos are stored. Albums are just "view" of photos that are in a particular project -- photos can be in multiple albums simultaneously, and deleting an album won't delete any photos, because albums don't contain photos, projects do. You can have smart folders within a project, if you want.

  • I have an iPod classic that syncs my entire library, I'd like to buy a smaller iPod, a nano maybe for the gym. Can I use the same library or do I need to set up a new library for the 2nd iPod? Is that possible? I mean for one to have 2 iTune librarys?

In other words, no. You don't need another iTunes Library for your new iPod
Another iTunes Library, that's only if someone elses music is mixed in with yours and you want to create another Windows user account with their music in it.
The iTunes Library is the master vault containing all your content, from there you create playlists or smart playlists specially tailored for the smaller iPod's storage requirements.
For instance if the iPod can hold only 2,000 songs, then you create a smart playlist based upon those rules/limitation. Plus what type of music you like.
You have a incredible degree of control with smart playlists, they update automatically so you only set the conditions for what goes into them. Including content from other created playlists and smart playlists.
Then, when you hook up the smaller iPod, it has it's own sync options, "all of your music and playlists" or "only select playlists"  So you use the second option to select just the smart playlist you tailored for the new iPod.
When you hook up the iPod Classic, only it's sync options are used, not the new iPod ones.
I hope I explained it better this time.

  • My daughter has an iPod touch and is emailing a much older boy via text free app she downloaded. How can I see the conversations? Please help and thank you

Please help me...My 12year old daughter has been talking to a older teenager through the text free app. How can I see the conversations? Also, there is a photo vault that is locked. What is that? Please someone help me. I don't know what else to do. I paid and downloaded a program that is supposed to tell you everything that's on the ipod but that was a joke. Thanks for your help.

As long as you can't get a hold of the device, you can't do anything more than talking to your daughter about it.
Erasing the device could also be an option to keep her from using apps you don't want her to have on her device.

  • I've got VIDEOS in ITUNES - how do i get them on my IPOD?

In Itunes I can see a handful of music videos that I've added to itunes in the VIDEOS location but I have no idea how to add them to my IPOD. They play in ITUNES and everything. I know that the videos need to be in a certain format and mine are .mpeg(s) and I don't know if those will work. And if they don't how do I convert them to proper files?

Sony   Windows 2000   i have new 30GB ipod w/ video and photo.

Yes they need to be converted first. Either by purchasing an application such as Video Vault or you can try the freeware application such as Vidorea. Once converted, add the file to ITUNES. Then drag and drop or update automatically. I purchased Video Vault and if your IPOD is connected it will allow you to snyc without the use of ITunes.

  • How do u get movies on your ipod?

how do u get movies on your ipod? i hav a 30 gb video ipod, so i can, but i cant figure out how. i've tried looking it up but it says nothing. pls help

First of all what to you mean by Movies? If you mean commercial releases that are issued on DVD, then you have to use software to rip and convert these to an iPod supported video format. There are a number of Windows compatible programs to do this, Video Vault commercial software is one, the free program Videora is another. After that, follow the instructions here to import them to iTunes and your iPod: http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/tutorial/ipgettingstartedt12.html

  • Password protect iMessges on iPod Touch

I want to password protect iMessges on my desktop and iPod. I looked into file vault (for the desktop), but it locks up the entire disk. I just want to lock up the application. I went through iMessages very carefully and found nothing on this. Very surprising.

On the iPod all you can do is sign out of Messages and then set the Restriction that prevent changing accounts.
On the Mac you can use Parental Controls. You have to set up an account for another person and then use that account for all others but yourself.

  • Restored vault on a new Mac and the projects and albums show up but there are no photos.

I recently purchased a new MacBook Pro.  I currently have about 33,000 photos on an older MBP.  I created a vault (I thought) of my old Aperture library and saved it to my Time Machine.  I restored it to the new MBP, which took forever, but after the restore the projects and albums I created show up on the new MBP but there are no photos.  In the 'About My Mac' storage settings it says there is 162.68 GB of photos on my computer (which is the same size as the photos on my old MBP).  How do I find them?!

If you want to remove the movies & videos from your iPod Nano in order to transfer to your computer, connect your iPod Nano to your computer.  Double click your iPod Nano icon.  Double click the DCIM folder.  Your recorded video content will be in your DCIM folder.  Drag the video content onto your desktop & place them where you want.

  • Sync iPod photos from Aperture

I've got over 14,000 photos in my Aperture library. But iTunes thinks there are only 48 and that is all that it syncs to my iPod. Just 48 random photos. Stupid. It used to sync them all but when I discovered that I could choose subsets of all my photos to be synched, it started helping me. With each synch fewer and fewer photos would be synched. Now it only does 48 of them.

Well, that was an interesting idea, Colin, but it didn't work. I opened iTunes, and then dragged the Aperture repository into it. It seemed to acknowledge it (when I dragged it onto iTunes, the "dragging" icon wasn't x'ed out), but it didn't add anything to the library.
If you try to do an "Add to Library" from iTunes, and then navigate to the Aperture repository, the repository folder is grayed out. It can't be selected. Same for a backup Vault created from Aperture.
Thanks for the suggestion, though. It's always worth experimenting. (Assuming everything is backed up. )

  • Sync Photos in Aperture to IPod using iTunes

My photo IPod is sync'd to my primary Aperture(1.5) library. That function worked well. You can have multiple libraries in Aperture, one of them is the primary library and I have another one on my laptop. You set the library location under preferences and then close and restart Aperture. I originally sync'd the primary library to the iPod. Now I want to change the library and sync the laptop library with the iPod. I can't find where I can tell iTunes (7.3.1) to change libraries.

  • Possible to sync photos from Aperture to iPod via iTunes?

When I used iPhoto, I set iTunes to sync photos from the iTunes Library with my iPod. Now that I use Aperture, there is no equivalent option to have iTunes look at the original photos in Aperture and copy them to the iPod so I can view them.
I can copy a Vault from Aperture to the iPod, but that's like copying any other data file -- it is stored, but photos cannot be viewed.

  • Converting DVD movies to iPod

I have QT Pro. Can I use that to convert DVD movies that I own to my iPod? If not, is there a way to do it?

I have QT Pro. Can I use that to convert DVD movies that I own to my iPod?
Not by itself. You would sill have to use additional utilities to rip, extract, strip, and/or preconvert before it would be ready for QT Pro to handle.
If not, is there a way to do it?
I believe "You get what you pay for" and so would probably recommend a good multipurpose commercial application over a one of the current "freebies" or multi-application approches. Here are a couple you may wan to look at or trial test:

  • File Vault + Mac Mini

    Hi,
I really want to make the most of my mac and take advantage of all the great features that it boasts. One of these features is "File Vault". I remember seeing a quick review of this in the OS X Panther video before Tiger started shipping and it really interested me. I would like to know whether allowing File Vault to encrypt my files will use up memory and processing power? It must use some extra ram surely? Slowing things down a little as it encrypts and decrypts files as they open and close? Do any of you use it and is it worth the while?
Thanks in advance for any help / support in this case.
    Regards

    My original post :
Pos, File Vault will encrypt your entire Home folder, and will therefore have an impact on performance when dealing with any file located in your Home folder.
If you think you have some files that need to be encrypted, you can always use Disk Utility to create an encrypted Disk Image, and use it to store those files ...

In fact, this is exactly what File Vault does to your entire home folder.
