IPod as back up disk

is it not possible to use an iPod as a backup disk for time machine? I have an iPod classic and it wouldnt do it

hello Hiro
Here's what David Pogue writes in "OS X Leopard Edition" of his missing manual series.
Time machine cannot use any of the following: 1. an iPod; 2. the iDisk; 3; your startup disk; 4. CDs, DVDs, flash drives, or any other kind of removable disk.
Hope that helps.

  • How to I copy photos from my ipod classic back onto my pc?

How to I copy photos from my ipod classic back onto my pc? My hardrive recently crashed and the photos on my ipod are the only copies I have! The photos were synced onto th ipod originally - not saved or copied as file transfer.

See Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device. I'm not sure which of the recovery tools can do photos offhand, but unless you chose the option to include full res. originals when you loaded the device then what they extract will be fairly low res. If you did opt for full res. then they should be visible on the iPod's drive when viewed in disk mode.

  • Ipod is stuck in Disk mode

I have reset the ipod twice, connected to my computer and Itunes, synced the device, yet it remains stuck in disk mode.

Hold down the center button along with the menu button and then your ipod will turn of
After that step has been completed and your ipod is switched off you turn your ipod back on but press the play/pause button so that it switches from disc mode to non-disc mode.
Well then your ipod is back to shape and you can carry on listining to your music!

  • Can I use an IPod to back up  Itunes, TV shows, and pics?

Can I use an IPod to back up the by Itunes, TV shows, and pics? Can I do a resotore off an IPOD? OS/X user...?
I have about 50GB or so of stuff I have purchased from Itunes and have not back it up yet. I looked into using DVD's and NAS devices, but I think I can also just get a new 80GB Ipod and use it as both a portable device and my main back up for my purchased stuff. Other files, like word and excel I back up using my .MAC I-disk, but the music and video files required much more space and bandwidth, so I have to back up localy.
If I have to do a restore, will I be able to restore off of an IPOD?

if you use the ipod in disk mode then, yes, you could use it to backup/restore files
but i'd never recommend using an ipod for this
great music player, but not something to rely on to keep your data safe
if you want a backup disk, get a dedicated external hard drive, it'll be way cheaper and a lot more reliable

  • Ipod cannot be restored, disk write error?

I cannot restore this ipod, nor can i reformat it using any program, application, or even the command line. iTunes gives me the error "unknown error - 1418", and ipod updater gives me "Disk Write Error" when i try to restore it. Does anyone know if there is any way to salvage this iPod? or should i be returning it to Costco?
this all started i think when the owner ran the batteries completely down. the ipod still gives the "connect to computer use itunes to restore screen".
this ipod was purchased in june 2006, and is in perfect condition.

See if doing a Restore on a Mac computer works
. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
    Tips
    a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iTunes 7.
    b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
    c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”

  • HT1351 I have taken my iPod Classic back to Reset

I have taken my iPod Classic back to Original Settings & now, PC wont recognise it because I have used an updated Ipod program by installing  every new update as they become available..
I now have about 50,000 songs in iTunes but cannot load onto iPod..
      Can anybody please assist..
    thanx, Pete

It could be an indication or a damaged or dying hard drive.  I would recommend doing a disk diagnostic on the iPod's HD using the instructions given by turingtest2 in this older thread.  He also covers what the resulting numbers indicate.

  • Load songs off ipod to computor or disk

Is there anyway to load songs off ipod to computor or disk?

For iTunes version 7 or later, then you can transfer purchased iTunes store music from the iPod to an authorized computer by using the "file/transfer purchases from iPod" menu. Note that the maximum of 5 authorized computers applies here.
Find out how to do that here.
How to copy iTunes purchases from an iPod or iPhone to a computer.
For all other non purchased content (your own CDs etc), check out the instructions/suggestions here.
Music from iPod to computer (using option 2). This a manual method using "hidden folders" and although it works, it is a little more involved than other methods.
Much easier ways are to use one of the many 3rd party programs that copy music from the iPod to the computer.
One of the most recommended is Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
Other free programs are Pod Player, SharePod and Floola and iDump.
If you want to recover just the structure of playlists from the iPod (and not the actual song files themselves), there's iRepo for Windows. which I understand has this feature along with all the standard features for these programs.
iPodRip also has the feature enabling you to reconstruct playlists.
There is also CopyTrans. This does preserve ratings/playcounts etc if those are important to you but this program is not free. It also supports video transfer.

  • Ipod rarely goes into disk mode

Hi. I have followed the steps to get my ipod into disk mode, because I am getting an ipod picture with a frown. Only rarely does it actually go into disk mode. I have toyed with it being plugged into my computer, into the wall, and not plugged in at all, but i cant get my ipod to get back into disk mode. What would be the easiest way to do this?
    Thanks alot

I am still at a loss and my ipod still doesnt work. does anyone know how to fix this?!

  • Help! My iPod is stuck in disk mode!

So yesterday my computer didn't recognize my iPod. I followed different directions but non of them seemed to work. Then I put it into disk mode. Now the only way to put songs on my iPod and charge it is by putting it into disk mode. Now it's stuck there. Everytime I try reseting it will stay on the apple logo screen. From there all I can do is put it back in disk mode.
Help me get it out of disk mode and load songs normally! I would be very grateful!

Xox: Rather than reset....Restore your iPod.
To turn disk mode off, open iTunes with the iPod connected, edit/preferences/ipod/music. Enable disk mode is at the bottom. If it is greyed out, change your Music update option to manual, uncheck enable disk mode and then set your music update option back to what you want.

  • Ipod mini stuck in disk mode wont reset

    Hey,
My iPod mini is stuck in disk mode, either displaying "ok to disconnect" or "do not disconnect" and won't reset.
When connected to my PC, iTunes does not notice the iPod, although it does show up in "my computer". When I try to run an iPod updater to restore the iPod, it either takes forever and I end up pushing CTRLALTDEL, or it comes up with the error message "cannot mount iPod".
I already know how to reset an iPod mini, having done it many times before. I've removed and reinstalled iTunes and iPod updater many times and it's making no difference.
So what can I do? I've had so many problems with iPod mini since I've had it. Every couple of months I end up stuck in front of my computer trying to fix it. Can anyone help me, or is there a way of contacting apple for a replacement?
    Thanks
    PC   Windows XP

    Hi
First of all thanks for your reply, but...
Please try to plug your iPod with the AC charger and press "select"+"menu" keys- to get out from disk mode
OK, did that, now I get the folder icon, or if I then try to reset the mini, it goes back to disk mode.
When I plug it into the PC now, it does kind of a loop. It goes from Mac logo to folder icon to "do not disconnect" to "ok to disconnect", then repeats. The PC is not recognising the ipod at all now.

  • Trying to restore 80GB iPod Classic back to the factory settings.

I am using Windows Vista Home Premium, and need to restore 80GB iPod Classic back to the factory settings, due to it being corrupt and the device doesn’t show up in iTunes 10 or on my computer. I've done the 5 R's twice and I am still seeing a box pop up on my computer when I connect the device that says:
“Do you want to scan and fix (F)?”
It gives me the following two options:
    1.  Scan and Fix (recommended)
    2. Continue without Scanning,
Option #1 says, “Unable to perform the scan because Windows cannot access the disk.
    Option #2 does nothing.
When starting my computer with the device connected a black screen says:
    Checking File System on F:
The type of file system is FAT32.
One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency. You may cancel the disk check, but it is strongly recommended that you continue.
Windows will now check the disk.
                             Volume serial number is 3141-****
Windows is verifying files and folders . . .
                             Folder  \iPod_controls is entirely unreadable.
                Folder entry removed.
                             Folder  \calendars is entirely unreadable.
                                            Folder entry removed.
                             Folder  \contacts is entirely unreadable.
                                            Folder entry removed.
                             Folder  \notes is entirely unreadable.
                                            Folder entry removed.
File and folder verification is complete.
Convert lost chains to files (Y/N)? Yes
I’ve tried both options numerous times and nothing works. This is about to drive me to either drinking or wearing one of those stylish white I Love Me Jackets.
    HELP ME . . . PLEASE

I've used option #1 & #2. I've tried the press & hold menu & center buttons numerous times. The device does not show up in iTunes, It does show up in Windows Explorer as "Removable Disk (F), but when I try to open it, a box pops up that says, "Please insert a disk into Removable Disk (F).
When the device is connected to my computer via USB Port, the device screen has an Orange Circle with two rotating Arrows in the centern& says, "Connected", Eject Before Disconnecting
I don't know anyone who has a Mac.

  • Songs can no longer be put on back up disk though that was what my original "contract" was when I furchased tunes.

Songs can no longer be burned on back up disk so if one changes comp.  GODBY SONGS...

They can, when backed up outside of iTunes as you would back up any other file.
