IPod as external disc

I copied some files onto my iPod as a backup disc. I now want to delete them as they are taking up too much room. The iPod eventually shows up in 'My computer' It doesn't show up when it's syncing in iTunes. However, when I try to delete the files, it won't let me, saying something about 'can't find pathway'. What's the best way to delete the files

Hello Janthea,
Are you trying to delete these photos from with a Windows Explorer window? By this I mean locating your iPod in the list of drives in "My Computer" and double clicking on it. Then navigate to wherever you stored these files on your iPod and delete them as desired. If that doesn't help, what exactly are you doing and what is the exact error message you are receiving?
If you are unable to delete them, you could always opt to restore the iPod via iTunes. This will wipe all content from the iPod and set it back to its original default settings. This will allow you to start from scratch with the iPod.

  • Ipod Shuffle as external disc?

Whenever I connect my ipod shuffle to my Windows laptop, the amber light blinks continuously and ITunes will not open up automatically. It always opened up itunes automatically but then it suddenly stopped and started opening up as an external disk. On page 18 of the ipod shuffle user manual, it tells me how to "enable using ipod shuffle as a disk"...when in itunes, select Ipod shuffle in the source list and click the Options button. Well, I click on my ipod shuffle in the source list, but I can't find any "options" button that looks like what is in the user manual. I was thinking that if I find this "Options" button I could disable my ipod as an external disk.
Does anyone have any advice on how to get my ipod shuffle to not always open up as external disc? Thanks

Connect your Shuffle and in iTunes go to Edit>Preferences>iPod and untick the "enable disk use" box: Using your iPod as a storage drive

I have a Windows 7 laptop using I tunes 64 and all my music files are
on an external disc. I rarely use I tunes and at one point moved all my files
(including the music files) from one external disc to another without
considering what affect this would have on the I tunes library. When I eventually
attempted to use I tunes, every selected a song from the library resulted in a
message stating that the file couldn't be located. After following some of the procedures
explained in this community I was able to reconnect the library back to where
the associated music files are presently stored. However, there are still 2
problems that need to be corrected. 1) Every song file now has a duplicate. One
file works and the other file will result in the same message stating that the
file couldn't be located. Before there were 4,000 songs in the library, now
there are 8,000 songs. I need to eliminate the 4,000 dead song files. 2) All
the playlists are still associated with the dead song files which makes the
playlists unusable. Can the playlists be reconnected to the usable files
without manually having to recreate them? Thanks in advance for the help.

    So am I understanding correctly?
You used your iPod as a hard drive (drag and drop) instead of having iTunes install the music?
If you used drag and drop your choices are different than if you used iTunes to transfer.
    Good luck!

  • External Discs; Wndows not Remembering Positions/Size...

    Hi all,
OK, this is driving me nuts: for some reason, my Mac won't remember the position/size of a window after I close one and open the app back up again, nor will things like external discs, ipods, etc. show up on my desktop when they are connected (ipods show up for an instant, then disappear.) It worked fine for a while then, one day, both things just gave up the ghost--any ideas what might be causing this?
Note: Yes, I have Prefs in Finder set to display extrenal drives, ipods, etc.

As far as I can tell this problem was never fixed and it goes back years:

  • Can I use my old Macbook Pro as an external disc drive while installing Windows 7 through boot camp?

I want to install the Windows 7 CD on the newest version of the 2013 Macbook pro 10.9.2 running OSX Mavericks, through Boot Camp.  It does not have a disc port, nor do I have an external disc drive....but I do have an older macbook that does have a disc drive and I know you can supplement it for an external disc drive.
My question is can I use my old Macbook pro's as an external disc drive for the installation of Windows 7 in Boot camp? Will this be a problem? Or do I have to buy an external disc drive separately.

  • How do I install Canoscan film scanner on macbook using external disc drive?

How do I install a CanoScan film scanner using external disc drive ?

sorry, not being very clear. I have the scanner and am trying to instal the operating  programme onto my new macbook. It was fine on my 6 year old one! I put the setup disc in the external drive. I can now get it to load 80% but it then stops. I have then tried to eject the disc - it won't let me as it says it is still setting up - but after 2 hours still says the same and clearly is doing nothing. I can't quit the setup programme - the only way I finally managed to quit was to to force quit the computer to shutdown and then when I start up again I can eject the disc.
Any idea how I make it load the 20% of the setup that it is currently refusing to do?

  • What application will allow me to play movies with an external disc drive?

What application will allow me to play movies with an external disc drive? I recently purchased an external disc drive and when testing it discovered that it only played the audio of the DVD, not the video.  Very frustrated.

Are you referrring to a commercial DVD movie, or a disk with digital movies, such as mpeg files?

    Try the following:
In Finder, select the problematic volume and then press command-I.
Expand the Sharing & permissions section if it's collapsed.
If the section is locked, then unlock it by pressing the padlock button and then authenticating as directed.
Tick/check Ignore ownership on this volume.

I agree that I should change the LAN domain from .local to something like .internal or whatever.   I've been running with .local for 5 years  on snow leopard server and never had any problems so that was a low priority.
I hope I'm just not seeing some obvious setting in main.cf

  • Migration Assistant can't find mounted external disc

Running Snow Leopard on newer iMac Dual Core. Trying to migrate users of dead G5. The G5 User data is intact, and on an external disc, and was transferred to this external disc from the G5's HD, by techs at The Apple Store. The specs of this external drive are:
    30.74 GB
    Format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    S.M.A.R.T. Status : Not Supported
Partition Map Scheme : Apple Partition Map
    Mount Point : /Volumes/Macintosh HD 1
The external disc mounts to the desktop, but Migration Assistant just spins and spins looking for it, without success.
I have tried to boot from the external drive; Restart/Option does not result in the external disc as a startup option.
I'm thinking when the Mac boys wiped the external disc to make room for the G5 User data, they reformatted the disc to non-bootable. In an experiment, Migration Assistant easily found and transferred User data from my laptop (when restarted in target disc mode).
Is there a way to help Migration Assistant find this external disk - or an option that transfers the User files intact from the external drive to the new SL machine?
    Thanks,
    lex

+then MA will not work on it, period. you need to migrate manually. Migration assistant does not give a hoot what the partition scheme is on the drive you are migrating from so don't bother with that. the partition scheme on your main drive should be GUID but it's probably that already.+
+P.S. if you still have access to the old drive of the G5 then you can migrate from that drive directly.+
Thanks V.K. I did open Disk Utility and was ready to change the partition scheme (on the external disc) to GUID, but based on your last post I will hold off.
Yes, I have the old G5 HD, and will get some help with connections for migrating - or will build an enclosure (or have one built) and then use MA to move the User folders. In the meantime, I can still access the data in all User folders on the external disk.
if all the data you need is in the user folders you can simply do the following. drag a user folder from Users on your backup drive to the /Users folder at the top level of the main hard drive. make sure you don't have another user by that name already present there. you'll need to authenticate with your admin password. once you copied the user folder to Users on the main drive go to system preferences->accounts. unlock the lock at the bottom, click on + and create an account with the same short user name as the name of the folder you just copied to Users. it will tell you that a home directory by that name already exists and ask if you want to use it. say "yes".
Question: What allows MA to work with the original G5 HD but not with the copied User data on the external disc?
I don't know the exact innerworkings of MA but it clearly checks the drive to see if it recognizes it as something it can possibly migrate from as it needs a lot of stuff present to work. It doesn't just migrate user folders. it migrates applications, some library files etc. so unless it sees a full clone of another system drive or a TM backup of another drive (which both have all that stuff present) it won't even try migrating.

  • Device for hooking ipod to external speakers...?

I have a 40g ipod and would like to hook it up to a set of external speakers on my deck. Is there a device for hooking up the ipod to external speakers?? I know about the docking systems (i.e. Bose, etc.) and the stereo receiver hookup, but is there an individual amplifier device avaiable to just be a go-between the ipod and speakers?? I don't feel like bringing my stereo reciever outside and I want the ability to change songs....
Sorry if this is a repeat question...I did a qucik search and didn't see anything.
    - thanks REV

You need an AUX input on your stereo and a 3.5mm jack to jack cable(there cheap) heres a link for one

No, sorry. it won't work with the 2007 MBP. You can replace the optical drive yourself - just go shopping at OWC.

  • Has anyone upgraded to iDVD 5 with Combo Drive & external disc burner

I have an iMac G5 with a combo drive. I have purchased a Lacie d2 drive to burn slide shows from iDVD. The Mac recognizes the Lacie on the firewire input but says under system utilities "Disc burning: not supported". I would upgrade to iDVD 5 if this will support an external disc burner. Any suggestions.

Apple pays for permission to burn DVD's (something about MPEG2). However, they don't pay for each copy of iDVD sold. They pay for each DVD burner sold. Thus, they don't allow burning to external DVD burners...officially. Under the File menu, choose "Save As Disk Image". Once you have the disk image, you can use the resulting Video TS and Audio TS to burn a DVD using Toast. A version of Toast or some other burning software should be included with your external burner. I hope this helps.

  • Can't use ipod and external HD anyon imac g3 after using it on intel mac...

hi, i've recently bought a intel imac and it has (what else) tiger on it. My girlfriend has an old g3 imac with jaguar on it. Today I connected my ipod to the old g3 imac (because i needed some files, about 10gb) and it didn't appear in finder or in itunes.
After trying some stuff, like resetting and retrying, etc., I went home to get my external HD and again, when i plugged it in, it didn't appear in finder. Strange, because before I had my new computer, the ipod and the HD were connected to the g3 imac all the time and on the intel imac, they still work perfect.
Then, I went to disk-utility and it recognised my HD but when i tried to activate the external HD from there, nothing happened. No error, no message, nothing.
But (and as we say in Belgium, now comes the ape out of the sleeve) when i clicked repair (in disk utility), it said that i didn't have the permissions to activate it...
--it was something like cannot activate dev/disk/blablabla dont have permission something something...
Could it be that my new computer has put some sort of protection on my ipod and external HD? and how can I remove that protection?
Or is there another solution for this strange and dark mystery??????

I have 2 ipods, both would not work on G3 iBook once connected to an Intel iMac. Took me a long time on the phone to Apple to figure this one.
It seems to be a conflict with the 'volume format' of the ipod. Plugging it into an Intel will change the format to 'Mac OS extended (journaled)' for some reason my G3 would not recognise it then. To fix it I plugged ipod to the Intel and went to disk utility. Select the ipod (hopefully you can activate it). Go to the Erase menu and change the volume format to 'Mac OS extended'.
It should stay on that format and work on both computers.
    Hope it works
