IPod as HD / which iPod /etc.

I'm in the need of an external HDD. But, as I was thinking about it, an iPod came to mind, which leaves me with LOTS of questions:
1) Do all HDD-based iPods work as disks?
2) Can I partition the drive so that I can have X gb of music and Y gb of files at the same time?
3) Are there problems with using it as a disk as well as music?
4) Realistically, is file transfer bearable as far as speed goes? (about how long will a 2GB take to upload and download?)
5) What generation iPods can be connected simply (no dock to carry around)? Do any use 4pin FireWire or standard USB, or only the Apple cabling?
6) Any other suggestions / warnings / pointers?

2. No. Disk mode and "iPod mode" both share the same partition.
3. Yes. Excessive use as a hard disk generates a lot of heat which is bad for the iPod.
4. USB 2.0 is not too bad.
5. All of them. The older gen iPods used a standard 6 pin firewire cable. All current iPods use a proprietary Apple cable with dock connector.
6. My suggestion... don't do it. The iPod is an audio player. It has standard hard disk capabilities, but not to be used in the way you intend.

Reboot the modem. Just pull the power for a few seconds. No settings are lost. The laptop getting through to the internet is not relevent.

I'm running iTunes 10.5 on my Macbook Pro and software 4.1 on my 2g iPod touch and having problems getting photo's to sync. Same error iPod can't be synced req'd file can't be found. Tried deleting the photo cache, restoring the iPod etc but to no avail.

Try and force it into Recovery Mode
1. Disconnect the USB cable from the device, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.
3.While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the device. The device should turn on.
4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen. When this screen appears, release the Home button. iTunes should alert you that it has detected a device in recovery mode. Click OK, and then click Restore to restore the device.
Note: Data will be lost. You may have to repeat the above many times.

Try:
- iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- Try another cable
- Try on another computer
- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

We are fellow users here on these user-to-user forums, you're not talking to iTunes Support nor Apple.
Why weren't you able to download each day's gift ? Whilst the 12 Days app required iOS 7 to be able to install it on a device, each day's gift was available to download direct in the iTunes or App Store apps, or via iTunes on your computer.

I can read your question a number of ways.
If you mean a disk plugged into your computer you wish to include in Time Machine backup.. just make sure it is HFS+ formatted and remove it from the exclusion list in the TM preferences.
If you mean a disk plugged into your TC for backup,
You can plug a USB disk into a Time Capsule as long as it is compatible.. and the disk is formatted HFS+, ie Mac OS extended Journaled.
You need a USB powered hub if you want to use multiple hard disks and even one might still need a hub.
Not all external drives are recogised but for example the Touro Deskpro works fine.
You can buy them up to 4TB.. how much added space do you want.
Also notice that USB 2 on a TC or AE is slow.. I mean half the speed of the same disk plugged into your computer so consider if speed is relevant to you.
You cannot use TM to backup network disks.. again I am not 100% sure what the question means.

You can download the apps again by opening App Store app on the iPad and tap Purchased at the bottom. That will display all apps that you have previously purchased on that Apple ID and you can download any of them by using the icon to the right of each (icon of a cloud with a down arrow).

I have my ipod, my ipad and also my grandaughters ipad on my itunes for keeping up to date. But when I connected my ipad to sync it with some new music I had loaded, even though I checked the correct serial no etc for my ipad it changed all the info to my gradaughters. How did this happen and how do I stop it from happening again. It took me ages to delete all her photos etc from my ipad. Is this what I should have done or was there an easier way. All my email details etc also were changed to hers which was a real pain as it wouldn't let me sign in as I did not have her password etc.

How to Use Multiple iDevices with One Computer

My husband and I have separate iTunes accounts and multiple devices (iPads, iPhones, iPods etc) how do we share our music and apps between our devices if we have different iTunes accounts.

My husband and I have multiple devices (iPad, iPhone, iPod ) that we we have linked to individual iTunes accounts ie he has his account with iPad, iPhone, PC and iPod linked/sync and I have my account with iPhone, iPad, iPad mini, PC etc.. How do we share our music and apps across/between our accounts?

It probably means that only one of you can use iCloud or at least sync calender/contacts with it. I would guess that you could manually manage the other phone as you have before.

How to make external devices (like iPods, etc.) NOT mount as connected drives when plugged in via USB to a Mac?

If I plug my iPod (or a thumb drive or whatever) to my Mac's USB port, the device appears as a icon representing a connected drive on my Mac's Desktop.
This is normal, expected behavior.
HOWEVER, in some cases, I'd prefer that the device not "mount" as a connected external drive.
With thumb drives or external USB drive, of course, I want them to "mount" so I can transfer files on or off them -- that would be the only possible reason to connect an external drive like that.
But with other Apple devices like iPods or iPhones, there are TWO possible reasons to connect them to a Mac: either to "sync" them or transfer files on/off them; OR, to simply recharge the device's battery. (Or, both sync and recharging functions at once.)
For those people who use their Apple devices in ways that require transferring files (i.e. most people), then having the device "mount" as a connected device is a desirable behavior.
But in my circumstance (and I bet there are a lot of people in a similar circumstance), I have no need or desire to transfer any data to or from my device every time I plug it into my Mac: I'm plugging it in SOLELY to recharge the device's battery.
Specifically, in my case, I have a 6th-gen iPod Nano, and I use it exclusively as an FM radio and a pedometer. I don't have any mp3s or songs or any other external files loaded on it, nor do I plan to add any in the future.
The only reason I ever plug it into my Mac is so that I can recharge the iPod's battery.
But the "problem," which is a minor one I admit but a problem nonetheless, is that every time I connect the iPod to the Mac, the iPod appears as a "connected drive" icon on my Mac's desktop. Which means that I'm not supposed to just unplug the iPod when I'm done -- first, I have to find its icon on the Mac Desktop, and then drag the icon to the Trash, to "unmount" it -- and only then can I freely unplug the iPod without getting an error message telling me that I shouldn't just disconnect connected drives without first properly unmounting them.
This would be bothersome enough if I only had to do it once per connection, but in the case of the iPod Nano, there's no way to tell how recharged it is while it is in the act of recharging, so that to see if I'm "done," I have to unplug it, check the battery status, and if it's not fully charged, re-plug it back in. So that each time I recharge it, I often have to unmount the drive several times, depending on how impatient I am.
There has to be a way to prevent the mounting of the drives of devices that one is connecting simply for the purpose of recharging. But how?
Strangely, I also have an old iPhone, and when I plug that in for recharging in the same way, it DOESN'T appear as a connected drive on the Desktop. I'm not sure how I managed to do this, but long ago I must have changed some setting or preference for this to happen. And by now I've forgotten what I did.
I'd prefer that I could change the "mount/don't-mount" setting on a device-by-device basis -- i.e. make it such that this particular iPod doesn't load, but perhaps a different iPod would load -- but if that's not possible, then is there a way to stop ALL iPods and iPhones from loading as connected drives when plugged in?
(I'm not talking about appearing as connected drives within iTunes -- I'm talking about appearing as an icon on the Desktop in the Finder.)
And please don't tell me to just buy a wall charger! I prefer to recharge off my computer if possible, using the charging cord that came with the iPod.
I presume there's some simple setting to toggle this on or off, but I haven't yet found it. Any clues would be appreciated. Thanks!

Well, I already know about that Finder Preferences option, but that is not what I'm looking for. Why not? Because I still need CDs and DVDs to appear on the Desktop and mount properly! If I uncheck the "CDs, DVDs and iPods" option, then I lose the ability to access CDs and DVDs, which creates a whole new problem for me. What I want is to not mount iPods only -- actually, what I really want is to not mount this particular iPod -- but if that level of specificity is not possible, then I want to exclude just iPods from mounting, without also condemning CDs and DVDs (or whatever) to invisibility.
Also, I was confused by the way the Preference is worded: It says "Show these items on the Desktop," with a series of options to check. But this phraseology seems to mean that the unchecked items will still "mount," they simply won't appear as Desktop icons. One would still have to "Eject" them using a menu command, rather than dragging the icon to the Trash -- right? Or am I mistaken, and is the Preference Pane simply badly worded, and when they say "Show these items on the Desktop," what they really mean is "mount these external devices as connected drives." So that if a category is unchecked, then they won't load as external drives at all?
But if so, then what purpose could possibly be served by inserting a CD or DVD that is not recognized by the computer? And if it isn't recognized, then it would seem that there would be no way to ever Eject the CD or DVD disk. Right?
Thus, if I uncheck that Finder Preference box you suggest, one of two outcomes will result:
-- Either CD, DVDs and iPods are still mounted, they just won't appear as icons on the Desktop; but they would still need to be Ejected via a menu command, which doesn't solve my problem.
-- Or, CDs, DVDs and iPods are not mounted or recognized by the computer at all, which means that if I insert a disk into the disk drive, it will get stuck there forever, since there's no way to Eject it, since the OS doesn't recognize that it's even there. Which is thereby a new problem.
Either way, I'd have a problem! Or...? Clarification, anyone?

Freezing iPods etc

I've only had my iPod for about 3 weeks and already it has frozen for the second time. This time, not only will the iPod not respond but I can't get iTunes to start on my laptop either. Is this something to do with the new 7.5 version and is it really worth downloading the latest versions if its always going to create problems with Windows? I have no idea how to reinstall an older version that actually worked.....any ideas?

I think the best thing for you to do would be to, first, install a previous version of iTunes (7.4.3) which is compatible with your iPod, and will hopefully provide a more stable performance on your laptop.
You can download this version from Apple's website here:

Next, after you've installed iTunes 7.4.3 and restarted your computer, connect your iPod to a rear USB port on your computer.
Open up iTunes, and, hopefully, your iPod will be recognized by iTunes and everything will go as planned. If not, then reset your iPod (press and hold the Menu and center buttons together) while it's connected to your computer.
If you can get your iPod to show up in the source list and sync properly, then Restore it in iTunes.
Any difference with your issue, or do the same problems keep happening?

Just what do you mean? Only devices with iOS 7 and later have the Activation Lock that uses our Apple ID, Only the 5G can go to iOS 7 and higher.

Connect the iOS device to your computer and try to make a backup

Then restore via iTunes. The iOS device will be erased. Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode if necessary to allow the restore.

If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.
