IPod as USB drive

I am trying to use my iPod as a USB drive and a part on iTunes on my Win XP Pro system. The iTunes is working fine and the USB works on other Win XP Pro systems. Any ideas. Thanks.

Do you want to know how to enable it a sa disk drive?
iTunes prefs -> iPod.
Check Enable Disk Use.

  • Ipod Nano USB driver fails continuosly

Initial problem: Device not found; located error in USB driver, uninstalled driver, rebooted sytem, found new driver - installed properly able to sync. (No hidden drivers listed in que) unconnect/reconnect ipod and USB driver error returns.(Each time)
Background services running are: Yahoo ISM, winamp, InCD, HP monitor, ATT self support, Logitech quick cam, McAfee, Index search.
Any known reasons why USB driver would continue to fail from dormant state? (unconnected and plugging in)

Make sure you have no other USB drives connected to your computer when connecting your iPod. I have a 4th gen Nano which fails to connect up when I connect it to my other Vista-based PC only if my USB hard disk is connected up.
I need to disconnect my external USB hard drive in Vista to get it to "see" the iPod. Also, might be handy to disconnect other USB devices like printers and your Logitech camera (which I have also connected, but that doesn't have any problem).

  • Plugging in iPod dismounts USB drive-Finder copy

I have 3 USB and 8 FireWire drives in addition to 3 internal drive connected to my Mac Pro. I am running OS X 10.5.2 and when I plug in my iPod classic (160 GB), one of my USB drives dismounts. This happened when I was copying a large amount of data from that drive to another drive. I got the dismount dialog, and the Finder copy progress bar dialog is still left on the screen.
Also, I have never been able to cancel a Finder copy under Leopard successfully. I always have to end up force quitting the Finder.

That's a lot of drives... probably too many.
Is that drive that dismounts on a hub with the iPod? Is it bus-powered (takes power from the hub)? If so, my guess is that the iPod initially takes more power than the hub has left, and that causes loss of connection to the USB drive.
I would keep most of those external drives disconnect and plug them in only when needed. Doing so will make your Mac run faster. And that Finder copy progress bar issue may go away as well.

  • IPhone or iPod as USB drive

Is it really true that you can't use an iPhone or current release iPod as a USB storage device? I have been happily using my first generation iPod Nano for storage, and thought that this facility would continue to be available on new models like the iPhone.

The current iPod classic, iPod nano, and iPod shuffle models support their use as external USB drives. The iPhone and iPod touch currently do not.

Anyone got any ideas on how to solve this problem ?? I have the upto date ITUNES, and i used to have two IPOD minis which work fine ! I also have this problem with one of the new IPOD nanos.

  • SBBoD when iPod or USB drive connected

    Hi –
I've noticed a new problem with my mac recently.
When my iPod shuffle or USB flash drive is connected, the computer hangs for a few seconds. (displaying the SBBoD when the mouse is above any application)
The behaviour is similar to what occurs when the OS tries to read or write a bad file on the boot drive, but the only thing that gets written to system.log is "kernel[0]: USBF: 2156845. 75 [0x3d6d200] (Reset) USB Generic Hub @ 2 (0x4b200000)"
The only sources I can think of for the problem are the two new USB device I got around Christmas time: an iPod shuffle and a TI-84 graphing calculator. I haven't noticed the problem in other accounts on this machine, but other users don't use USB storage devices that often so I can't be sure. My external USB hard drive mounts instantly and without any problems.
    Thanks.

I guess it fixed itself; I'm not having any problems any more.

  • 10.5.6 update...can't see iPod or usb thumbdrives

I recently upgraded my desktop and laptop to Leopard (from a DVD install disc). After the upgrade, software update on the iMac showed several update for the OS. I allowed software update to install them. BIG MISTAKE. Now my iMac no longer allows me to sync my iPod. It is as if I am not even connecting it. Nothing, nada no response at all. My usb thumbdrive (PNY Attache), which worked fine prior to software update, upon plugging it in flashes several times and then simple goes dead. It seems to make no difference which usb port the iPod or usb drive are plugged into. They both work fine on the iBook which is 10.5 but has not had the software update run on it yet! (like I really would run it on this after the problems on the iMac!)
I wonder if software update does a combo update or regular update. I have download both from apple's website but wanted to see what other though before trying to run the combo update.

    Hello, heatsiphonman,
I am having the exact same issue with my 5G iPod. I tried a clean restart (with no memory of open windows), and all the other suggestions via the support website and it's still a no-go. Not sure where to go from here. It seems like it may be a Lion issue or a combination of Lion and iTunes 10.5. I may take it in to an Apple store and see if I can get it to sync there. Meanwhile, I'll keep a close eye on this topic to see if anyone else might be having this issue.
    Mike.

  • USB Drive and iPod do not show up on desktop

    Hello,
I put the computer to sleep when I'm going to be away for awhile and overnight. When I come back and wake it, my USB drive does not appear on the desktop. I have to restart the iMac to get it to come back.
Also, when I plug my iPod in, iTunes updates it and then within 10 minutes, the icon does not show on the desktop but I can see the iPod in iTunes.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Brad

I did run the hardware test and everything passed.
For about 3 hours last night, everything was working fine. This morning the USB drive icon is there but not the iPod. I think I will try the OS reinstall but not for about a week. I will be out of town all next week and can't get to it before I leave.
Something may have gone wacky while loading some application. A couple of the suspects would be Adobe Lightroom beta 4 or Google Earth. This issue only started within the last 5 days or so and I think those are the only applications I've loaded in that time.
Thanks for the help in eliminating some of the culprits. I think the OS install should fix. If not, it may be time to have Apple take a look.

  • How can I take music from an USB and transfer it to the iPod? It tells me use use itunes to sync but the music is on an USB drive. It had worked in the past. Tks

How can I transfer music from an USB drive to the iPod. I can see the music and play it on the computer, but the iPod tells me to use iTunes to sync. The music is not on iTunes. It has worked in the past.....tks

These are just playlists. The songs there are really not duplicates of the songs. They are just a different location for accessing them. Some playlists can be deleted, some cannot. Ones that are created by iTunes cannot be deleted. Ones that you create can be. The Recently Added and the 90's cannot.

  • I just purchased an ipod shuffle (4th gen.) and  I have been working trying to get it running for hours.  I have followed all manuals and tutorial help.  When I pull up my device manager, it shows an Ipod, but won't let me download the Usb driver.

I just purchased and IPod Shuffle (4th gen.) and can't get it running.  I have gone through all of the help available.  It shows up in my device manager, but needs a USB driver.  It will find it online, but says an error has occurred and access is denied instead of installing.  I bought this for a last minute trip with teenagers and I have spent hours on this.  I am running Windows 7 and have tried disabling the firewall.
    Help, please.

  • IPod Nano, Windows, and USB driver quirkiness question

    Hey all,
I recently helped someone who was suffering from two separate, show-stopping iPod/iTunes problems to get things into such a state that they could actually make use of both. Things seem to be working fine, though one of our solutions seems to me to be a bit less than optimal.
For the sake of providing as much information as possible, the first problem (though likely unrelated) was the infamous vanishing iTunes installation. We solved this by using the ctrl-alt-delete trick on an iTunes 4.9 installation (that is, by ending all of the install processes when the installation-ending error message shows up.) Okay, that's not the best solution, but it seems to be all that we can do for now.
The main concern, however, is with the iPod USB driver, and a problem that began with the formatting of the iPod. I can see that at least a few people have had this problem, but here it is for the sake of it:
The iPod installation software would state that the iPod needed to be formated, and then proceed to sit for a very long time, "waiting for iPod," until it would eventually fail. We solved this using the second technique (uninstalling the iPod USB driver) outlined by Paul Green7 in this thread: William Brame, "Initial formatting of iPod Nano", 02:49pm Sep 22, 2005 CDT
After doing this, we ran the iPod setup software again, and it told us that the iPod didn't need to be formatted. Obviously this was rather confusing, but upon loading up iTunes, it proved to be true. It appeared as an actual drive in My Computer, and it showed up properly as a 4gb iPod which songs could be copied to without a hitch.
That is, until the computer was rebooted. After a reboot, the iPod would only be recognized once again as a "USB Mass Storage Device," would not appear in My Computer, and indeed iTunes failed to recognize it as anything other than a 360gb storage device of some unknown sort.
So, what we found was that every time the computer was rebooted, the driver needed to be uninstalled again, and when Windows booted again the iPod would be properly recognized.
Now, as I said, this leaves things in a working, if far less than ideal, state. Can anyone think of a more proper fix for this? It seems to me that we've only partially addressed the problem here, and I can't help but think that this may not be the best state to leave things in.
Also, if nothing else, is there any possibility of ill effects resulting from our currently-employed solution? As far as I can tell, the worst thing about it is that it's merely bothersome, but then, I've had difficult understanding these problems in the first place.
That said, if anyone can offer any advice, it would be greatly appreciated!

The key to your problem is more than likely the 360GB storage device. This is a symptom of having either network drives or an external hard drive attached to your computer, and Windows confusing them with the iPod. The solution is to reassign the iPod's drive letter. See this:
