IPod as USB  or Storage Unit.

Yo Over There! here´s my question,i understand very well that a Windows formatted iPod can be read and managed in Mac Plattform, the deal is this: after i Windows Formatted my iPod, it works great between this 2 plattforms (in 2 computers i´ve got wich have Mac OS and Windows Xp each) But by the time i go on a third computer (wichever it is, anywhere with Windows Xp) I get the "new hardware found assistant", so it limits me to use mi iPod as an USB on anywhere, imagine yourself "installing" everytime Windows hardware update so you can transfer data... its quite boring when you just want to transfer 2 or 3 docs from school or just a few jpg to get them to your Pc. hope now you get my point, THANX A LOT!!! Hope u get my idea..

You should be able to just cancel the installation. Then go to My Computer and it should be there.

  • IPOD seen as two drives(USB Mass Storage & and Dell USB )

My IPOD classic has not worked properly since I updated my OS to Windows XP. At first the IPOD was seen as two different USB controllers (Apple USB Driver, and a USB Mass Storage Device) I've gone through every troubleshooting article on the apple website. After downloading a hotfix, my computer recognizes the IPOD as an IPOD but it doesn't connect to itunes long enough for me to restore it. It automatically disconnects after being plugged into the computer. If anybody can help, please, please please let me know.
    Thanks.

I just purchased an ipod classic 120GB and after downloading itunes to the computer I can no longer use my DVD/CD drive as the ipod is using that drive now, which is the E drive on my computer. I noticed that if I uninstall itunes I get to use my DVD/CD drive again. I do not know what next to try either. So my ipod is seen as a mass storage device, I need help too, can anyone help?

  • USB Mass Storage Device - ?

Shuffle shows up as a USB Mass Storage Device under the drive (USB Port) i plug it into.
It will not take an update or reformat.
Wondering if it is possible that the factory format could be erased and now the unit is just being recognized as a storage device and unable to be used in the manner it was originally intended for...MUSIC.?
What does it mean when you get a message "Media in Drive - Changed" ?
Fixed many other ipods in past but only one shuffle so far....now this one has me going...no clue what else i can do to it.
    Any help would be appreciated.

i think it was trying to read the shuffle when i wanted to format and restore.
i never did get it to work.
no way of knowing now..i just got through tearing into this one to make one good shuffle out of the two i was working on.
all was good till i went to put the slide bar on/off switch back on....broke the switch again.
    do you have a switch?
    thanks

  • Storage unit

Hi, im trying to use my ipod as an storage unit and i try to see if i was able to see the hidden files but i dont see them on my pc, i have os vista, hope that some one can help me with this issue

Unlike the simple iPods. iPod touches do not have disk mode.  Thee are apps like USB Stick that allow loading files via iTunes.

  • IPod 5th Gen as storage for Canon Rebel XT CompactFlash memory?

I am taking my new camera on an extended vacation -and would prefer to use an Apple iPod 60Gb as a storage device to transfer photos from my CompactFlash card, to transfer to my desktop running Windows XP Pro when I get back home.
Has anyone done this?...what do I need to use to connect the camera to the iPod?...and to my desktop when I get back?
I won't have access to a computer while away, so I will hopefully be able to go from the camera (or a card reader) directly into the iPod,...and I'm leaving Feb 1, 2006.
REALLY appreciate any help you could offer!

As long as your iPod is a photo or video iPod (the iPod must be color and have s/w v 1.1 or later), you can use the Apple iPod Camera connector...$29 at the Apple store. This plugs directly into the bottom of the iPod and you then connect the camera to the adaptor using a standard USB cable.
Belkin or Griffin also make a media reader, but I don't think they are available through Apple directly anymore.
Read the reviews online at the Apple store, a bit mixed, the main complaint being that it takes about 45 minutes and most of the battery charge to transfer 1gb from the camera to the card.
To my knowledge the Apple product is only compatible with certain cameras and not card readers.

  • I synced. All my music disappeared. Now it will only sync my apps and not my music. Is something wrong with the port on my ipod, the USB cord, or Itunes? On Itunes it says I still have all my music. :(

I synced my ipod to my computer and all my music disappeared. I tryed resyncing it and it would only sync my apps and not my music. I cant add music to my ipod. I something wrong with the USB port in the IPOD, the USB Cord, or ITUNES itself. Itunes still shows that all my music is there on my ipod. Itunes is recognizing that my ipod is connected, but it doesnt recognize that theres no music on my ipod anymore. Im so sad. Someone please help me. I miss my music.

The music sync is one way - computer to ipod.  The only exception is itunes purchases.
The ipod is not a storage/backup device.  It simply mirrors the selected content of your computer.
As the music came from your computer in the first place, it should still be there and in your backup copy of your computer.

  • USB Mass Storage device problem

Hello, I cant use my USB mass storage device in my computer, it is a SanDisk ImageMate CF/SM unit, which works perfectly in every other computer I have tried it, but in this one it hangs while accessing the device, and in linux, it hangs while mounting it (the same thing).
I dont know what might the problem be but some other people have seen the same problem, perhaps someone here can help me.

Yeah, I though so, but first I wanted to know what might be causing this incompatibility, in the linux posts people have said that it is a nForce2 generic problem, perhaps a big nvidia bug? heh

  • USB Mass Storage Device won't Eject/Unmount

My brother bought a Sanyo ICR-B180NX digital voice recorder last year to use with his iBook. It was working very well up until about August of 2005. At that point, the recorder would mount on the desktop, and he could get all the files off (it records direct to MP3 format rather than WMV, so he can edit his files very easily), but when it came time to eject it, the device icon would disappear and then immediately re-appear on the desktop. The display on the voice recorder remained static at the "Connect" screen.
I believe this happened in conjunction with some sort of OS update, as it was a "sudden" thing. We can't quite recall what happened between the times it worked and the time it stopped working.
I have tried the device on a PC, and it works the way it should, so I don't believe there's anything wrong with it.
Now, I know the system requirements on the website say that you must have Windows, but a statement from a support company (we returned it to the place where we got it, and they sent it out for repairs, and it came back with a letter) states that the device does act as a generic Mass Storage device, and thus may work with most systems.
All my other USB storage devices (ie. SanDisk 12-in-1 card reader, SanDisk Cruzer Titanium 2GB, iPod Photo), and FireWire devices (ie. WiebeTech TrayDock Extreme) work fine and unmount fine.
Does anyone know of any changes to the way Mass Storage devices are ejected in the current iteration of the OS? I haven't had a chance to test the device under an older OS, but will soon.
Alternately, if anyone has any suggestions regarding replacements (not really looking forward to that, given this recorder cost almost $300CAD), let me know. We need a device that can plug in via USB and transfer files to his iBook which he can edit together (he's a newspaper reporter in training, and needs to edit the interviews to take out such things like dead air, etc).
    Thanks!
    Mike Ma.

    Hi
+USB mass storage device. An error occurred during the installation of the device the data is invalid+
This typical error message appears if the installation of external USB devices failed.
Why? This is not easy to say
What you could do firstly is to clean your registry using the freeware software called CCleaner (Google for that).
Install it and clean your OS and the registry entries.
After cleaning access the device manager and remove all USB root hubs and all USB Host controllers from the device list and reboot the notebook.
New reboot should cause a new installation of USB drivers.
Finally try to connect and try to install your external USB devices again.

  • Samsung A900 USB mass storage and Tiger

I just got a Samsung A900 phone, when I connect with USB as mass storage device, the phone is mounted write protected in 10.4.3. In 10.3.9, it mounts as a writeable drive.

Hi there. I just bought a Samsung A900 and figured out how to use the phone as a USB Mass storage device:
My setup is a PowerBook G4 with 10.4.6 all updates (including the latest Security Updates and iLife '06 updates).
    1. Plug the USB cable into the phone, and your computer.
    2. The phone should say "USB Cable connected" on the main screen. If it doesn't, turn the phone off, and back on again with the cable plugged in.
    3. Press the Menu button
    4. Go to Tools
    5. Go to Mass Storage
    6. Select "Connect to PC."
You will not be able to receive phone calls while the phone is in USB Mass Storage mode.
A new volume should appear in the OS X Finder as "Untitled."
You have access to the same folders as with a Bluetooth connection.
Unfortunately, this also means that it is not a solution to get custom ring tones from an MP3 you own.
I tried looking in Terminal for any hidden folders, and I can't find any. I honestly think a firmware update/hack is needed to enable this on the phone.
    Hope this helps.

  • LG Spectrum - Issue w/ USB Mass Storage funcionality

I just got this phone a few days ago and I am trying to play the music that I have stored on my phones memory card through my car stereo by plugging it in the USB port in my car. When I try to do this, the screen on my phone just flashes back and forth from the charging home screen to the regular home screen and it (my car stereo) says reading error. Prior to getting the LG SPectrum I had an HTC Evo on Sprint and it used to work whenever I plugged my phone into my cars USB port. Is there a setting I need to change in my phone or is this phone just not compatible w/ car stereos? This may be a question that I need to ask my car manufacturer but I figured I would start here for some advice.
On another note, I am also wondering if this phone has an indicator light. I have been looking ever since I got this phone but can't seem to find it anywhere. All I see on it is the front camera and a motion sensor. Am I missing something?

Yes I have tried that but it still gives me the same result. Itis a little disappointing that I can't get it to work like my Evo did. I never had the need for an iPod b/c my phone always did what I needed as far as music goes. So is am is it safe to assume that it won't be possible to play my music on my phone through my car stereo? Any way it could work through bluetooth? I am somewhat disappointed w/ some of the other features of this phone (especially not having a notification light) but I could get past that but not having the ability to have the USB mass storage capability is a huge let down.

  • Is a storage unit and back up unit two different entities?

wondering if i need a cloud storage and a seperate back up storage unit for my computer.  I was told the timemachine backs up to a storage unit, but I still need something other than the icloud for my movies i download since they are taking away from my phone cloud backups.  Please help! I'm new to Mac computers. So confused!!

iCloud is only as good as your internet connection and your storage on it, and the password you use to maintain it.
Local storage is only as good as the physical storage's security.
If you had a thief run into your unsecured home in a high crime neighborhood, might they target your hard drive if it was in the open?  With anything, you need motive and opportunity.
Either way, iOS does not run on MacBook Pros.  Mac OS X and Windows do.
iOS runs on iPads, iPhones, iPod Touch and AppleTV.
Hard drive data recovery is quick compared to dealing with the cloud, when you have to erase an entire hard drive.
Time Machine offers limited archival storage, which is limited based on the hard drive's capacity to hold the archives being stored on it.  Once it exceeds those limits, it recursively deletes storage it can't keep indefinitely based on when it backed it up.  You can manually do a time machine backup, and separately backup those archives you want to keep permanently to a non-Time Machine medium.
As long as your original has the data, Time Machine won't delete it from the backup.
Clone backups work the same way, as long as the original has the data, your clone won't delete the copy.
Clone backups offer no archiving directly, but do offer quick verification the entire backup was successfully complete in the fact clones can boot the computer in question, if the source was bootable.
Keep at least two copies of all essential data at all times.  That means making a third copy before doing any erase that would leave you with only on when the erase is finished.
Your choice of cloud, Time Machine, or Clone depends on your tolerance for time to recover.

  • USB Mass Storage for Zen MicroPh

Is there a way now or plans for the Xen MicroPhoto to work as a USB Mass Storage device so I can plug it into any windows-xp box and copy mp3 files without any special software.
This is what I expected from Creative products and the main reason I stayed from the ipod and their itunes interface.

packrat555 wrote:your first suggestion work but I can;t play the mp3 files. If I wanted a usb hd I would have bought one.
You were asking about UMS, and that's as good as it gets unfortunately. It's only designed for moving data files around, but it's better than nothing.
I don't use MediaPlayer at all so I'll try another system with v0 but it still doesn't do what it should. If it showed as a dri've letter then we could use whatever software we wanted to move files. Seems like a lot of the software questions here would go away.
It's shown as a device in Windows Explorer, and you can drag and drop. Doesn't get much easier than that. If you're using the v2 MTP firmware anyway this should always be present as it requires Windows Media Player 0.

  • IMac cannot detect ANY usb mass storage device.

iMac Core 2 Duo (White) cannot detect ANY usb mass storage device including iPod. Only Mice and Keyboards work via usb. Any solutions? OS X shows absolutely nothing when any usb device is connected.

Try resetting the PRAM. Hold down Option-Cmd--P-R together at the startup chime. Wait for two more chimes, total three, then let go to finish booting.
Try an SMC Reset. Shutdown, unplug from power, wait ten minutes, still unplugged, hold power button in for five seconds. Reconnect to power.
Run the Hardware Test in extended.
