IPod assigned drive letter drops when iTunes launches (windows xp)

My iPod looses its assigned drive letter in windows when iTunes launches. Up until the last Apple iPod software update, it worked fine. I unstalled iTunes and attached my iPod, it stay's connected (it doesn't loose it's drive letter).
I reinstalled iTunes, and the minute it launched, the iPod drive letter goes away. iTunes can't fined the iPod with out the assigned drive letter. Any help in fixing this problem would be GREAT. thank you Dragon47

How would I manually assign a drive letter (Windows XP) to my ipod?
If I uninstall iTunes, the drive letter windows assigns to the iPod stays. The ipod dowsn't loose it's drive letter. If I install iTunes, the minute it starts up, the assigned windows drive letter goes away, and itunes can't find the ipod.
Up until the last Apple iPod download software update, it worked fine
Thank you for your help

  • Windows suddenly not recognizing iPod Shuffle - drive letter conflict

If you're having troubles with your PC not recognizing your Shuffle even though it used to recognize it in the past, this is just something else to consider (sorry if it's already been covered):
When I originally connected my Shuffle to my laptop on my home network, it was recognized immediately, and my WinXP OS assigned it the drive letter "I". Later, with the Shuffle no longer connected to the laptop, I was setting up my home network, and I mapped one of my shared network locations to the "I" drive letter on my laptop. The next time I plugged my Shuffle in, Windows would not recognize it. I proceeded to plug it into both of the other computers on my home network, and it was recognized immediately on both of them. So I then went back to the original laptop, disconnected the network drive mapping I had set up for "I". Once I did that, when I plugged my Shuffle back in, the Shuffle was again being recognized immediately (not surprisingly, still as drive letter "I"). In short, Windows has a memory of drive mappings made in the past, and sometimes this can produce unexpected or unwanted behavior (I would have expected my Shuffle to automatically be assigned the next open drive letter, but alas, that was not the case in my experience).
To minimize the possibility of running into this problem again (in case I do more network drive mapping in the future), I used the Disk Management utility in WinXP to change/force the Shuffle's drive letter on my laptop to be "Z" (right click on My Computer and choose Manage, then look for the Disk Management module - you probably will need Admin rights to do this, but I haven't confirmed that).

Had this happening too, had a very old cable, tried a new cable and it worked great. My ipod was showing up in itunes, but not in windows (or in device manager). When I tried to use the utility to copy files from my ipod to my hard drive I couldn't do it (wonderful utility getsharepod.com). The new cable solved the problem!

  • How do I find my tab history? I had hard drive issues and when I launched my browser after getting it back their was no "restore session" option. I know a tab history is kept, just don't remember where or how to exercise it. Thanks

    Question
How do I find my tab history? I had hard drive issues and when I launched my browser after getting it back their was no "restore session" option. I know a tab history is kept, just don't remember where or how to exercise it. Thanks

Firefox 4 saves the previous session automatically, so there is no longer need for the dialog asking if you want to save the current session.<br />
Use "File > Exit" or "Firefox > Exit" if you want to restore multiple windows.<br />
You can use "Firefox > History > Restore Previous Session" to get the previous session at any time.<br />
There is also a "Restore Previous Session" button on the default <b>about:home</b> Home page.
    Another possibility is to use:
    * [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Menu_differences Firefox (Tools) > Options] > General > Startup: "When Firefox Starts": "Show my windows and tabs from last time"

  • TS1363 My sons iPod touch is not recognized by iTunes, or windows.  Is this repairable?

My sons iPod touch is not recognized by iTunes, or windows.  I have tried a variety of options, even resetting, but still no luck.

What does the iPod's screen say or do, when you connect it to USB port on the computer?
The article referenced is for "regular" iPods.  An iPod touch is an iOS computer, so this article would be more appropriate for troubleshooting.

Be sure to rule out a faulty USB cable as the cause.  Try another cable, or try the cable you have with another device that has a dock connector.
Also, you should do this test to rule out a problem with the USB port (such as lack of power or USB device conflict).  Shut down (power off) the computer and disconnect all USB devices, including any hub, except for standard keyboard and mouse (if normally used).  If the computer is a laptop, connect its power adapter (so that it's not running on battery power).
Then, start up the computer, run iTunes, and connect iPod to a direct USB port on the computer.  If it still does not connect, connect something else to the same USB port to confirm it is working.  Preferably, use something similar, such as a USB flash drive or external drive.

    Does it charge?
    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Try another cable
    - Look at the dock connector on the iPod. Look for abnormalities like bent or corroded contacts, cracked or broken plastic.
    - Make an appointment at the Genus Bar of an Apple store.

  • How do I assign a drive letter to the Ipad in Windows 8

    Hi,
I deleted an important video file and some photos from my ipad.
Last few days I have spent ages trying to find a utility that will recover the files, but most of the 'ipad specific' software is a crock.
I thought if I could assign a drive letter to the Ipad when I connect it to me Windows 8 PC I could run any number of much more trsutworty and stable applications to try and recover the info. However, I have googled and googled and can't find a way to assign a drive letter to the Ipad.
Can anyone advise if this is possible?
    thanks

You cannot. The iPad is not considered a removable storage device and will not operate as such normally.
There are software programs out there that will allow you to directly access the unit's internal memory. Google iFunBox. I don't know if it will give you low enough level file access to do what you want though and it certainly won't give you the ability to undelete files either. Whatever file access that's done is through iFunBox...you can't access the device (indirectly) through Windows Explorer (or Mac) even while running iFunBox.

  • New-Partition assignes driver letter to mount point after reboot.

Trying to create a series of mount points using powershell on Server 2012 R2. When I have used diskpart in the past I could initialize the disk, create a partition, format a volume and assign a mount point without assigning a driver letter to the drive.
When I try to do the same thing in Powershell on Server 2012 R2, everything looks great until I reboot. Every partition I created and assigned as a mount mount gets a driver letter added to it... I am using mount points to avoid drive letters. Is there a way
to prevent this behavior.  The following is an example:
    Get-Disk 3 | Initialize-Disk -PartitionStyle GPT
    Get-Disk 3 | new-Partition -UseMaximumSize -AssignDriveLetter:$False | Format-volume -confirm:$False
    Add-Partitionaccesspath -DiskNumber 3 -Partition 2 -AccessPath c:\someFolder
Everything looks good at this point with no driver letter assigned. Rebooting adds a driver letter to the volume with no impact on the mount point... Is there a way to suppress the driver letter assignment?

Figured it out... It appears that this part works fine:
    Get-Disk 3 | Initialize-Disk -PartitionStyle GPT
    $Part = Get-Disk 3 | new-Partition -UseMaximumSize -AssignDriveLetter:$False
    $Part | set-partition -NoDefaultDriveLetter:$True
    $Part | Format-volume -confirm:$False
If you look at the output of Get-Partition the NoDefaultDriveLetter value is TRUE. After running Add-PartitionAccessPath it changes to FALSE. You can set it back with the Set-Partition command:
    Get-Partition -DiskNumber 3 -Partition 2 | add-PartitionAccessPath c:\SomePath -passthru | set-Partition -NoDefaultDriveLetter:$True
I had a bunch of them to do so I used the following:
    Function Config-Disk {
    [cmdletbinding()]
    Param(
    [INT]$Disk,
    [INT]$Partition = 2,
    [String]$Label,
    [String]$MountPoint
    Get-Disk $Disk | Initialize-Disk -Partitionstyle GPT
    Get-Disk $Disk | New-Partition -UseMaximumSize |
    Format-Volume -FileSystem NTFS -NewFileSystemLabel $Label -Confirm:$False
    Add-PartitionAccessPath -DiskNumber $Disk -PartitionNumber $Partition -AccessPath $MountPoint -Passthru |
    set-Partition -NoDefaultDriveLetter:$True
    MD "c:\SomeLocation1"
    MD "c:\SomeLocation2"
    Config-Disk -Disk 3 -Label "SomeLabel1" -MountPoint "c:\SomeLocation1"
    Config-Disk -Disk 4 -Label "SomeLabel2" -MountPoint "c:\SomeLocation2"

  • ImageMate All-in-One with Windows 8.1 - cannot assign drive letter

Hello, I have SanDisk ImageMate All-in-One which worked perfectly well with Windows 7. I recently installed Windows 8.1. The external reader is OK with SD cards, but could not recognize my CF card. The card is SanDisk Extreme 32GB (120 MB/s) After reading in multiple forums, I found this page: http://kb.sandisk.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/12483/kw/imagemate+firmware After successfully applying this updated firmware, not I see the card, but only in the Windows Disk Manager. I cannot access it in the Windows Explorer because the drive has no letter. But when I right-click on the drive and try to assign a letter, I get: "The system cannot find the file specified." Please help!

I am just the opposite.I can not read SD cards.Windows keeps popping up forme to format this drive.Tech support told me thisNote: If you are using Windows 7 or above, please make sure your card is in the reader while it is connected to the computer. The system now recognizes the image mate but still I can not read SD cards. All others are fine!Just wondering what you would do if youdid not have all of the cards supported?Luckily I did.

  • [SOLVED] Toshiba 3.0 USB 2TB (HDTC720XK3C1) Assigned Drive Letter But Not Working

My external HD has 750gb of data that I cant access.  It shows up with a hard drive letter, but doesnt show like it used to (showing how much storage is used and unused) or showing it's assigned name.  It also doesnt work if I plug it into a different computer (does the same thing).  I cant remember if I properly removed it when I unplugged it last night when I finished using it, so that may be the cause.  I tried going to "manage drives" and uninstalling the drivers, but no luck.  Tried rebooting with it connected, no luck.  Tried unplugging for several hours and plugging back in, no luck.  I do not wish to reformat the drive because of the 750GB of data I'll lose.  Please help!

*****I FIXED IT!!!!!*******   I continued searching the web and found the fix.  All I needed to do was open the command prompt (cmd) and run this script "chkdsk /f E: (E: was the generic drive letter assigned).  Basically windows runs check disk and fixes the problem.  It also said you could try "chkdsk /r E:" but it worked on my first attempt.  Make sure you allow the computer enough time to finish.... It took a long time for it to completely finish.  (one way to know if it's done, you will be able to type in the cmd prompt again, if not, your computer is still working in the back ground)  After it was done, I ran my windows defender to check my removable drive for virus's and sure enough it found 3 threats.
I HOPE THIS HELPS ANYONE ELSE WITH THE SAME PROBLEM as it seems like a relatively easy fix, but over 80 people had read my plee for help with no response.

  • I received the following message when iTunes launches: "The registry settings used by the iTunes drivers for importing and burning CD's or DVD's are missing.  This can happen as a result of installing other CD burning softwarre.  Please reinstall iTunes"

Everytime I connect my iPod Touch (4th Gen) to my laptop, running Win 7 (64 bit) I get the message "The registry settings used by the iTunes drivers for importing and burning CDs and DVDs are missing.  This can happen as a result of installing other CD burning software.  Please reinstall iTunes"  I have reinstalled iTunes several times and it has not fixed the issue.  I am running ver 10.2.2.12 of iTunes.  I HAVE NOT installed any other burning software to my laptop either.  I haven't tried uninstalling iTunes and then re-installing it yet.  Would that perhaps fix the problem?  I've read that many users have had issues with the new version of the software and I was wondering if that might be causing my issue.  I'd like to point out that iTunes seems to work after getting rid of the message, but I haven't tried to burn any CDs or put music from a CD to my laptop.  Any ideas on how to get rid of the annoying message?
I also am having trouble hooking up with our other computers using  Homegroup.  I noticed quite a lot of people are having the same issue and hopefully they come up with a fix for that soon.
    Thanks in advance.

I'd start with the following document, with one modification. At step 12 after typing GEARAspiWDM press the Enter/Return key once prior to clicking OK. (Pressing Return adds a carriage return in the field and is important.)

If you're still getting the error message (especially when you plug in the Touch), I'd check for a device filter confusion on the PC. (They can affect the connection of USB devices to a PC, as well as burning and importing CDs.) For that one, see:

  • IPod does not show up in itunes or windows

I've been through all relevant troubleshooting pages and I still can't get my 4th Gen ipod to show up on my computer or itunes. I have managed to install a driver, so the device manager recognises there is an ipod fitted.
Is it because I have WIndows Vista? I've checked that its fully upto date.
    Please help, its highly frustrating.

I need help with this as well. (Of course, like the others, I have also checked the various support pages and googled the problem to no avail.)
Basically, I want to connect my ipod to my work computer so I can charge it while listening to music. I did not have trouble with it in the past (I was able to connect it without itunes, ipod would charge once plugged in to a usb port - it showed charging "do not disconnect" message; I could also charge it while listening by ejecting it through windows - right clicking the ipod drive listed and selecting eject) and it's connecting to my co-worker's computer just fine! So I think it's a usb problem on my computer but i have no clue as to what to do... >_<
When I got to work today and plugged my ipod into my computer, it mysteriously did not show up under the windows explorer as a drive so I could not eject it as normal to charge and listen. Originally, this morning it did JUST charge (plugged ipod in and "do not disconnect" message appeared), but after I fiddled around and selected to stop device under the device manager it would not connect again. So now it is not even connecting to charge.
I've tried installing itunes, rebooting various times, resetting my ipod, turning it into disk mode, changing it back... - all nothing.
Although...when it changed from disk mode back to regular ipod mode and I plugged it into the usb drive it did charge for a while (as if it was on aka i could play music; it didn't show the "do not disconnect" screen), but when I touched the click wheel it stopped charging!!!
this is very frustrating so any help would be appreciated
