IPod Audiobook Chapters

I used to know the trick for displaying audiobooks in an organized fashion on my iPod.  You removed "Audiobooks" from the main menu, then navigated through Genre > Audiobook instead.  There you would see your books grouped nicely by author \ title.
Now I have a new iPod.  The same books that appear organized on my old iPod do not appear that way on my new iPod.  They are both Classics, the newer is 160 GB (PC, not Mac).  On this device, under "Genre", I don't see my Audiobook Genre at all!
I'm pretty sure the files themselves are fine (Media Kind: "Audiobooks", Genre "Audiobook", etc...) because I can still view them correctly on the older iPod.
Any suggestion??
Many thanks!
Lindsay

Thanks, Dud.
Shuffle is off, but the tracks are still being played in random order. Since the cd is already imported - and I've returned the cd's to a library in a different state - I unfortunately can't use Aldo's helpful advice (although I certainly will in the future!) I tried renaming the tracks in order (1,2,3, etc) but that didn't work. Argh!

  • 'Audiobooks' menu on ipod displays chapters (allmixed up) and not Titles

I have imported many Audiobooks, from CD's I own, to iTunes. I have transferred them from the 'Music' Library to the 'Audiobooks' Library by clicking 'get info', then 'options' and then setting 'Media Kind' to 'Audiobook'
They are of course stored like music albums, with Book chapters instead of tracks and book titles instead of Albums. Therefore in iTunes 'Audiobook' Library, when you click 'view' and 'as cover flow' you can scroll through all the book titles and view the sequential chapters of that book all stored as it should be. Perfect.
However, on new iPod Classic 120gb, when you select 'Music' and then 'Audiobooks' it doesn't open into book titles, it opens straight into chapters (tracks) What's worse is that all the chapters from all the different books are mixed up so there's nothing even sequential about those chapters. I just have a jumbled mess of mixed up chapters. Now if I transfer the audiobooks back to the 'Music' Library then I can browse Book titles by clicking 'Music' then 'Albums' and by selecting a title I can browse the chapters in it all as they should be.
So what am I doing wrong? How do I store my audiobooks in the 'Audiobooks' Library in a way that is usable?
Many Thanks in advance to anyone who can save me from pulling any more of my hair out!!!!!

For what it's worth here's a suggestion I've previously thrown at iPod Feedback without any obvious success. Feel free to adapt and add your own voice.
    *Audiobooks behaviour*
It seems the original idea for this feature was one audiobook, one file. In practice many audiobooks are released as albums with chapters taking up one or more tracks. The iPod Audiobooks menu should behave similarly to the Podcasts menu. Ideally audiobooks should be grouped into authors, then into books displaying album art. The tracks of Audiobooks should have an unplayed flag like those for podcasts which should be extended to display a half-circle for files that have been partially played. Clicking Play on an audiobook should start playing the first unfinished track from the bookmarked position. Select should display the list of tracks with the most recent unfinished track pre-selected in the list. When playing in sequence the next track (played or unplayed) would start playing from the beginning rather than the book-marked position. Next would first skip to any bookmark in that file, then the next track.

  • IPod Audiobook Sorting is HORRIBLE

I have to say I am really disappointed in the way audiobooks behave on the ipod. I have a bunch of audiobooks I got from CDs, as well as a few spoken word albums (comedy mostly), that I would love to reclassify as audiobooks to keep them separate from my music.
Reclassifying them in iTunes is easy and organic, but once I pull out my iPod, everything is a mess. All the audiobook chapters are separated as if they were individual books and thrown together in one alphabetical mess. iTunes knows better, but apparently my iPod never got the memo.
I've done a lot of online research, and I apparently have a few terrible options:
    - Classify the audiobooks as music (which means they will clutter up song lists, and show up in shuffles)
    - Rename every audiobook track so they group properly
    - Create playlists for every book
    - Purchase third party software that will join all of the tracks into one file!!!
Really??? My iPod can't just organize things the same way as iTunes??? Why is this so hard?

Here's what I do that works well... I see you use a Mac so you are in luck. Sorry to the Windows crowd I don't think this is available there.
I'm assuming you've brought over an audiobook from a set of CD's like I did. After it's in iTunes you highlight all the tracks (I do 1 disk at a time) and launch Join Together. You have to fill out the disk name (I abbreviate a lot) and and then hit a couple of OK type boxes. It takes a little while but it creates a new single track. Then you "Get Info" on that and change the type to Audiobook. Trash the original in iTunes.
Now you have a single track for the whole disk and there are chapter jump points ... not sure what you call these. It sync's right over into the Audiobook section nice and separately. I think this is donation-ware and there's an upgrade price. I was very happy when I found this, I think the donation was ~$5-$10... worth every penny!
I agree Apple should fix this!

  • Audiobook chapters no longer grouped by book on iPod classic

My new iPod classic arrived today. When I synced it to iTunes 7.4.2 I found that the contents of the Audiobooks category were no longer grouped by title. Instead, all of the files were simply alphabetically sorted. So all of the "Chapter 1"s from all of the books appear together in the list. And they play back that way, too—going from Book A's Chapter 1 to Book B's. This basically makes it impossible to listen to an audiobook.
Also, "Audiobooks" no longer appears in the list of Genres, though it did on my old iPod.
All of my audiobooks are .m4b files and show up in the Audiobooks category (not in the Audiobooks genre under Music) in iTunes.
Has anyone else seen this? Any idea what's going on?

See the first section of Corrupt iPod classic. If the media files aren't visible in the hidden folders then it may still be possible to use an unerase/undelete or other file recovery tool.

  • Audiobook chapters get mixed up

When I download an audiobook to itunes and move it to the audiobooks library, the track numbers (chapters) are all in correct order for each disk and I have selected remember playback position, skip when shuffling, and compilation. When I play the book on the iPod Touch (by disk), it jumps around from chapter to chapter in seemingly random order. Can anyone tell me what I am missing in order for the book to play the chapters in correct order? Thank you.

I am just to buy an ipod (not sure which model yet) primarily for audio book. As you know, many audio books are broken down into large mp3s like 60 minutes per file. Therefore, bookmarking is very important or else I have to start listening to each file from the beginning. Can you pls confirm that your ipod have bookmarking feature ? If yes, do you know if other ipod models like nano or classic have that feature too ? Thanks.

  • Hi, i have problems with audiobooks, chapters from diffrent books stand togheter, the book is mixed with another book, does someone know how to fix this

If i synchronise one book there is no problem,
when I sinchronise more books then chapters from diffrent books stand togheter.
In I-tunes the books are not mixed.
In my  ipod classic the books are mixed.
I use the latest version from i-tunes
I work with windows vista pro NL

The easiest thing to do is to make a playlist for each book. I have about ten audiobooks on my iPod and have the same problem with everything being put together in one long list. The iPod does not treat each book as it does an album by grouping each audiobook in one folder, it just lumps them all together in one long list.

  • Audiobook chapters by same author messed up in the Finder?

When I "show in finder" on a music track the track will show up in iTunes Media/ Music/ Artist/ Album - all very neat and as it should be!
However with an audiobook, where I have many audiobooks by the same author, then "show in finder" takes you only to the author's folder (iTunes Media / Audiobooks / Author / ...
There's no seperation of the "albums" within the Finder  - and since many such tracks are named with a leading double digit I just have the first chapters of all the books by the author grouped together and then the second chapters and so on. Actually it gets worse than that as many such books have multiple discs so all the track 01's get mixed up!
My metadata inside iTunes is pretty well arranged so WITHIN iTunes I can clearly see my different books - but I'm struggling to see how I could get things better organised in the Finder so if I want to locate the "physical" (can't think of a better word!) tracks I can do so easily as I could with a music track.
Oh yes - and all this without PLEASE messing up the beautifully organised metadata I have inside iTunes!
Is the only way to change the "Media Kind" in Options back to Music so they get sorted into album folders? Hopefully there's a better way!
    Many thanks

    SOLVED!!!
    Hi there!
Up to date this "bug" hasn't been resolved, but there is a very easy way around this:
Edit your audioboos Author so it includes the Title of the Audiobook too, i.e. Author: Douglas Adams - Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy
Of course this has a few drawbacks. Looking for Douglas Adams will make a few sparate Douglas Adams pop up, if you have more than one audiobook, but: In Finder every Author get his own folder in the audiobooks folder.... so the different titles get neatly organized.
Anyways, Apple - please fix this, shouldn't cost the responsible guys more than an hour of work, no? Am I being naive? It works for Music Albums...

  • Xbox 360 not recognizing playlists on ipod - naming ipod "audiobooks"

All of a sudden XBox 360 is recognizing my ipod as "audiobooks" (when connected directy thru USB). It used to say "Tom's ipod". The bigger issue is that I can no longer access my playlists in my ipod when playing it through the 360. I am using the Elite and a ipod photo. I am not sure what happened. Anyone have any ideas on wht I can do?
Some others on an Xbox support thread theorize that it might be the last itunes update.

I have the same problem. It happened not too long when I updated iTunes to version 7.3 I think. I now have version 7.5 and still not working. I thought it was my older Ipod, but my new 2007 Ipod Classic 80 GB does the same thing. Xbox 360 doesn't recognize the playlists on my new Ipod. This *****. Please Apple fix this immediately, I don't want to buy a Zune to hear music on my home theatre system. I use the xbox 360 as a media hub for video and audio. Many xbox 360 owners have ipods and use it for the same purpose.

  • IPad audiobook chapters support?

I have many audiobooks and made M4B audiobooks with love using AudioBook Builder. Chapters are individual named like the book chapters for better orientation.
    - All OK on iPhone using iOS 4.x
    - Chapters with same name merged on iPhone with iOS 5.0
    - Chapters loosing individual names on iPhone with iOS 5.1
    - Chapternames comming back in iOS 6, but merged like iOS 5.0
BUT ON IPAD NO CHAPTER SUPPORT EXISTS:
    - Audiobooks with more files will shown with this parts (identical to files)
    - I can using ">>" and "<<" to jump between chapters

  • Possible to set my own audiobook chapters?

I'm currently able to rip my audiobook CDs into a single .m4b file, but I've noticed iTunes store's audiobooks have multiple chapters built into a single file. Is it possible to do this on a pc? (I read something about Garageband being able to do it...)

I found a program called "Chapter Master." Anyone have any opinions on it? Or know of anything free?

  • Audiobook Chapters

    Hi,
Is there a way to create your own chapter marks (not bookmarks) on Audiobook purchased from Apple iTunes Store.
The book i bought is broken down into like 3 different files (which is fine), but the chapter marks are totally random, and do not correspond with the chapters in the audio program.
    For example:
File 1 is 30 minutes long and has 6 chapters of the book
however, when you use the skip forward / back buttons there are actually only 3 sections you can jump to, and they're in the middle of a chapter of the book, so I cannot find a set area that I am looking for.
Is there a way to fix this?

Send an email here -> http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/store/browser/

  • IPod audiobook playback problem

Hi guys, I have a white 30GB 5th generation iPod that i've had for a while, apart from a problem with the headphone jack which i can cope with, when playing audiobooks, in particular 'harry potter and the...' if I pause the playback and come back to the audiobook later the iPod often restarts the audiobook at the beginning after a random time interval, it also occasionally sets right back to the main menu screen (Music, Video, Extras etc...). I'm wondering if this is a software bug or another hardware issue.

I've found a workaround for this problem: the Join Together v5.1 iTunes script from Doug's AppleScripts combine the segments into two large AAC files.
Now it's OK if the iPod stops playing segments after they finish because they're hours long instead of minutes.
