IPod Backlight Hissing

I've had this iPod since March, and it's never given me any troubles. I recently bought a stereo with iPod connectivity, and I noticed that it hissed terribly when playing from the iPod, but not from any other source. I plugged in another iPod, which didn't have the hiss. After a bit of playing around I noticed that it was intermittent but I couldn't figure out why. Eventually I noticed that the hiss started right when the backlight turns off. I thought it might be something to do with the stereo, so I plugged it into my friend's car (which is new, and has iPod connectivity) and the same thing happens. It hisses as soon as the backlight turns down. I set it to "Always On" and it doesn't hiss now.
Obviously, this isn't a good solution. The iPod sounds fine through headphones, it's only when it's connected to something via the dock port. Anyone else have this problem? Anyway to fix it short of sending it in for repair? It'd cost me $35 in shipping alone to get the thing fixed. I'm sure it's been broken the whole time, and I just had no way of noticing until now.

I have the same problem with my 5th Gen iPod. I connect it through the Neo iOn cable to my car stereo. After working perfectly for a few months, I now have the same trouble: when the backlight goes out, I hear a terrible hiss. I have installed the latest update and did a restore to the factory settings. Still no luck. Sorry I don't have a solution; I am waiting for one as well.

  • No iPod backlight; not the brightness option

No iPod backlight; not the brightness option
Ive read through the board and can't find an answer to this. My classic recently has been working fine OTHER than the backlight not working. Its NOT the brightness option in the menu, its on full. The light will come on if I reboot ipod with center/menu buttons, but will soon be back to not working shortly. I've also tried restoring and while it seemed like it might work, a little while later its back to not working. IDEAS???
    thanks

Sounds like the backlight is burning out, which does happen with most iPods overtime. It's a hardware issue, meaning you'll need to have the iPod serviced/replaced either by Apple or a third party repair company.

  • My ipod backlight turns on briefly when i hit the option button, but goes dim immediately?

My ipod backlight turns on briefly when i hit the option button, but goes dim immediately, even when i touch the screen? Apps seem to work fine but no backlight. Tried updating the Ipod, Tried Resetting the Ipod, Tried turing it off then on, Tried recharging... still no repair?

I restoring the iPod to factory defaults/new iPod does not solve the problem you likely have a hardware problem.  An appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
What s the option button you are talking about.  No such button is described in the Ipod Users Guide.

  • Has the backlight hissing problem been fix

    Hi,
I'm about to buy a small flash memory mp3 player and am considering getting one of the creative muvos. Either one of the newer ones or I can get the TX SE GB at a very low price.
I'd like to know if the distortion (hiss) introduced into the sound output of the players, caused by the backlight, has been fixed for any of the muvo range.
I would like to use the player under low light conditions where the backlight would be essential to browse for a specific track. Searching the forums shows that the problem goes back quite a while.

I suppose no reply means the problem still exists and has been swept under the carpet by creative.
I'll get an iPod nano or a Samsung YP-Z5 instead.

  • IPod backlight problem...

Why isn't my iPod touch 2G 16GB's display not turning on? I know it's a backlight problem because I can faintly see the apple logo sometimes.

  • Audio on the iPod Touch Hissing.

    Hey Guys & Gals
Has anybody else noticed that when they plug in their headphones into the iPod Touch that they start to hear a continuos hissing sound.
This then also becomes apparent during some songs.
Try it by putting in your headphones whilst they are not plugged in... then plugging them in. Do this is a silent environment and you may notice the issue.
Is this something that apple knows about and can solve in a future update?
    Many thanks,
    Ecko

Put me in this boat, too. I'm on my THIRD touch, the first one had 4 dead pixels, and the second one had a terrible hissing problem (really noticeable with good quality headphones, which are sold directly as a recommended accessory BY Apple). I've just spent 30 minutes on hold with Apple and they said they'll "Look into it."
I"ve tried three different pairs of headphones with two different iPod touches, and both iPods and all headphones exhibited this really annoying hissing problem.
Apple really needs to fix this. This is in-excuseable for a $400 music player.

  • Ipod backlight doesn't turn off even though i hold the menu for 3 seconds

    PLEAASER HELP

You need to get to the iPod menu and locate the "Settings". Select this and find & select "Backlight Timer", scroll & select "2" or "5 seconds".
If you want to shut down the ipod, hold the play/ pause button until the ipod shuts off, (usually a few seconds).

  • IPod Backlight stopped working.

I turned my iPod Touch on today and the backlight was off. I checked it in settings and it was halfway up like it normally is, so I tried adjusting it and nothing happens. How do I fix this?

Yeah same thing happened to me. It worked fine one day and then three hours later when I went to use it the backlight wouldn't come on. I tried adjusting the brightness and turning it off and back on but it never worked. Everything works okay I just need a strong light to read the screen. PLEASE HELP!!!

  • Ipod BackLight Always On When When On Dock

I have ipod touch and it works perfectly on my white dock on my desk. The back light is off when not in use..Stays on the desk the whole day..
I bought another dock with the 5th Generation Ipod..
But one problem the backlight is on all the time saying connected.. I dont need to know this at all. I just want the light to be off when connected to computer but on when in use..
I think this feature needs to be added to next firmware asap...Whats the issue..

Generally, the backlights on 5th generation iPod stay ON, although at their lowest setting, when "actively" connected to iTunes. However, by "actively" I mean when it is actually doing something like syncing but this also includes enabling disk mode on the iPod where the iPod stays mounted as an external drive.
So, if you do not enable disk mode, it should light up when connected and syncing but then lights off when it is done and the iPod will revert back to showing the main iPod menu. If however you have backlight enabled, then the iPod will show the Do Not Disconnect text and stay "active" with backlight on until ejected. Solution is to disable disk mode if you don't need it enabled all the time.

  • Ipod backlighting not turning on

hi i just bought a 30gb ipod video. i noticed the backlighting doesn't turn on. i fully charged my ipod, and i dont know if its just my ipod or does all of them do that? When i click on backlight nothing happens...its really irritating and i would like to get this solved.

hmmm what exactly do you mean by "when i click on backlighting"? usually the backlight is set to be on for a certain period of time by default. did you go into the settings-->backlight timer to check if its turned off in there? on my old ipod, i could turn the backlight on and off by holding the menu button, but that doesnt work on the video ipods (mine at least).

  • Ipod backlight not turning off

ever since i updated the firmware on my ipod (stupid idea, i know), the backlight will not turn off when plugged into my computer. this is not an issue of the ipod being broken, rather a "feature" that was included in the newest firmware that was not mentioned in the changes section. aside from being annoying as ****, i'm worried that the cfl backlight will eventually die due to the constant use. of course, when it does apple will say that it merely reached the end of it's life and it's not covered in the warranty that expired already. is there any way to save the ipod from it's now inevitable demise?

Hi. I had the same problem with 1.1.1 then after upgrading to 1.1.2 the problem was solved. But if you already have 1.1.2 then try restoring it but don't forget to backup all the music first because it will erase your iPod. XD

  • IPod backlight problems

I've only had my iPod since christmas and the backlight is acting funny. first it would flicker when it faded and then it would come on sometimes when i hit a button and now it doesn't come on at all. I've checked and the backlight is not set to be off. Does anyone know if this is something i can fix or if the light is burnt out or broken or something? thanks.

You can try restoring it but I think it will end up being a hardware issue.

  • 5G iPod Backlight Setting Defaults to 10 Seconds

I've upgraded to iTunes 7.0 for my Mac mini and 5G iPod.
Now, after I disconnect the iPod from the computer, the backlight setting defaults to 10 seconds. I like the backlight to be always off; so I switch it to that setting. Once I reconnect the iPod to the computer, it goes back to 10 seconds of backlight. Has anyone else experienced this? Not a big deal, but with iTunes 6, I didn't have this happen.
Thanks for any tips or tricks.

    Thanks for the tip, Dana.
I tried the "restore" as suggested from your link.
Even after the restore, my iPod defaults to 10 seconds back lighting once it's reconnected to the computer.
Not a huge deal. Was just wondering if anyone else had noticed the same thing.
    Cheers!

  • My IPOD backlight is completely shot

Everything works except the backlight, so I can't see anything on the screen. Any ideas how to resolve? I can't see this being a battery issue, since everything else works fine and it has no problem holding a charge.

This just happened to mine, sent it in for warranty service.... NOT COVERED. Why? Don't know just told that it is because of misuse. ?? I use it mainly when I jog, so what misuse. Never washed it or got it wet, except getting caught in the rain, and I covered it like it was an infant. BUT of course, why should they cover it and fix it when they know they got me by the nads. I hate APPLE support. They should have at least given me credit to buying a new one. Waiting for it to come back in the mail.
If another music player would play all my itune purchases without fail, I would bail.
