IPod became an unreadable disk

I've been facing a puzzling problem with my 15GB iPod recently. i'm using Mac OS 10.2.8
When i hook up the iPod to the firewire, i get this message: “A disk attempting to mount as Unknown has failed verification or has failed to mount. Please use Disk Utility to check the disk and correct any error.”
Then I’m asked to click on either “launch disk utility” or “ok”.
I launch disk utility and there’s no ipod icon.
I also get this message: “You have inserted a disk containing no volumes that Mac OS X can read. To use the unreadable volumes, click Initialize. To continue with the disk inserted, click Ignore.”
Then I have 3 choices to click on: Ignore, Initialize, Eject.
What should I do, so that my iPod can work with the mac again?
The iPod works well on its own. i can record voice memos and listen to music. But it just doesn't seem to work on my mac.
my iPod is a gift and i'm trying not to buy a new one.
Help please! Thanks so much.

here's just an update - i decided to restore my ipod to the factory settings. everything's back to normal, thank God.

  • How can i get my daughter's imessage on my iphone and still have it show up on her ipod as an unread message

I have my iPhone setup so I can also get all of the iMessages that my daughter sends and receives on her iPod. The problem is that if I read the message first then it doesn't show up as a new message on her iPod and therefore she doesn't know that a message was sent. Is there a way that I can get my daughter's iMessage on my iPhone and still have it show up on her iPod as an unread message? Any ideas from anyone will help. I can't figure it out

    HI,
I am not sure that I can really add anything to to this.
Apple used the phrase "sync" when saying what Messages on the Mac would do in regards to showing iMessages that were going to iOS devices.
It took to OS X 10.8.2 and iOS 6 to get as close as we have right now.
At best it looks like "Sync" means "Display on all Devices" and not much more.
The Mac version implies it will do more as there is a setting to notify people by return that you have read the iMessage.
The iOS devices have a similar "Send Receipts" item in the settings.
However actually reading an iMessage on one device seems to bear very little resemblance to anything that happens or can be seen on another device.
It seems for most people reading an  iMessage on one device shows nothing at all on another device (the presumption being it arrives all places at the same time)
Your post is the closest I have seen to someone suggesting that it can be different on different devices.
You also seem to be implying that there is almost a time difference it the time your iPhone gets the iMessage and the time the iPod touch gets it.
I have certainly seen the "silent arrival" of iMessages on both my iPhone (when my computer and Messages is On) and on the iPhone if the conversation started on the Mac.
The Mac end will show both "Sent" and Received sides as it "Syncs" the conversation and beeps the alert sound for the Received part and the iPhone will remain silent.
Even "talking it through" like this in this post I am not coming to any real conclusions about what to try.
I am not even sure what to suggest to test for things to look out for.

  • HELP "Attempting to copy to the disk JODI'S IPOD failed. The disk could..."

I am receiving this message when attempting to synch. "Attempting to copy to the disk JODI'S IPOD failed. The disk could not be read from or written to." It appears that it synchs some of the songs but hangs up on certain songs. Once I determine the "corrupt" song, I deselect it in Itunes and try synching again. It will synch some more until it comes across another song it doesn't care for. I found 4 songs out of 130 that were problematic. This makes for a very painstaking process. Any help would be appreciated.

You're not the only one. I use a Mac, and I have come across this same problem. I wonder how it determines which ones it wants to sync and which ones it doesn't.

  • Error Message When Syncing Ipod "There is no disk in the drive ... "

When doing a search on the internet for this error message, i see a few other previous posts on forums.ilounge.com with others having this issue with Itunes, but all I can find is someone talking about deleting the Itunes preferences files on my computer, and I did that, but that didn't help. I was wondering if anyone had any bright ideas.
I get this annoying message EVERYTIME I sync my Ipod:
"There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive G:".
(Drive G on my computer is my Ipod when i have it plugged in). It doesn't seem to interfere with anything; all I have to do is click continue and the message goes away. But as I said, it's annoying, and I want it gone. I want to avoid reinstalling Itunes if I can due to the hassle of having to do so, plus previous posters on forums.ilounge.com said they did so an it didn't help. If someone can direct me to a previous string where this has already been discussed please post me the link. thanks!

    Hi there
I am also getting this error message. One day my iPod was syncing fine, the next I was getting this error message. I have tried every conceivable drive letter, and still I get the message. i have also tried every drive on my computer, still the same message.
I have restarted and restored the iPod several times, no change to error message.
I shelled out £16.99 on a new sync cable, thinking that might help - but no, i still get the same error message.
In addition, my iPod screen displays the DO NOT DISCONNECT sign.
I seem to be able to perform a sync, but at the end, when iTunes says sync complete, the error message appears on my screen (incidentaly the header bar of the error message says: CorelLOMonitor.exe - No Disk) and the iPod screen continues to flash "Do Not Disconnect". This continues indefinatly and I have only been able to stop it by unplugging the iPod form the Sync cable.
I really would welcome some assistance with this problem.
    Many thanks

  • Transfering music from pc to mac using iPod as a hard disk drive

I just got MacBook Pro and iPod which I have formatted for a mac, however, I want to get the songs from my IBM thinkpad to my mac. I transfered a bunch of them with a friends external hard drive, but forgot about all my purchused songs from the music store. I am pretty sure there is a way to use the iPod as a hard disk drive but everytime i attach it to my thinkpad it asks if I want to format the iPod and then won't transfer. So I guess my question is can I do this and if I can do I have to format it to windows and then transfer the files to the iPod and will I be able to put the files from my thinkpad to my mac?
    thanks!!!

An iPod formatted for Mac won't run natively on a PC because the Windows OS does not support the HFS Plus file system and therefore will not see the drive. You can reformat your iPod on Windows if you want to use it on both platforms as Macs can read Windows formatting, then you could enable it for disk use on the PC: How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer

  • 1st gen iPod became a paper weight after last update

For the last couple of months, I've posted and read all posts, visited the Apple store three times to check in with the Geniuses, have emailed Apple with feedback, have upgraded and downgraded systems with different OSX versions, have tried 8 different Apple computers including desktops, powerbooks, and mac minis, have tried several PCs as well, have followed pretty much every direction posted here as suggestions to make my 1st generation iPod (5Gb) appear on my desktop. So far, I've been unsuccessful making my iPod one very expensive paper weight.
Apple, please acknowledge there is a problem... I've been to the Apple store geniuses (three different Apple stores) and they have failed to even recognize this as a problem, at some points even hinting I should just exchange it for a newer model... my iPod worked fine before the last iPod updater... and it works fine with the information it has stored now... but all the functionality I bought it for is gone... no transfers to iTunes, no updating my music, no disk mode, no file storage, etc. etc.
I've been an Apple user since the Apple II, have had innumerable apple systems, have recommended whole colleges and universities and other institutions in the US and abroad to switch to Apple... but now... I am starting to ask myself if Apple pays attention when there's a class action lawsuit at their door. I am starting to believe, unfortunately, that this may be the only (and last) resort left for a loyal customer to at least be heard...
As I have found out, I am not alone in this problem. Many users have in fact reported similar problems (just look at the many posts here). I don't expect magical solutions... but at least Apple should acknowledge a problem to its customers through it support channels... these forums, genius bars, etc... And of course, I only want to restore the original functionality of the machine. No one has ever talked about upgrading the iPod in any way or form... but when you go back as far back as OSX 10.0 and OS 8, going through all the different systems in between, all different iPod updater versions, and it still fails to mount then you have to ask what was in that last software update that completely made this iPod unrecognizable. I am aware that different users may have had different experiences with this problem, but I have also found that there are many that share this frustration.
    Apple... please help. Please.

Just thought I should post what I have tried so far with no luck...
    - Deleted the ktext file, as noted elsewhere.
    - Reset the iPod, many times, the menu + play option
    - Also reset the iPod through the following (undocumented, I believe) key strokes... same menu + play, and then immediately press back(left) arrow, forward(right) arrow and select button... this will launch a diagnostics routine... where you can run many different tests... including a Firewire port test (which it passed), a reset, screen, etc... (Use at own risk...)
    - Charged the iPod via the external charger (not the firewire ports of computer) before resetting, and plugging in the computer.
    - Used a Firewire Cardbus controller card on three different PowerBooks instead of (and in addition to) the Firewire port in those computers... this could have been a solution, since the Cardbus card I have is not capable of providing bus power and it has two Firewire ports... but no luck either.
    - Have tried many different iPod updaters, but in none of them the iPod even mounts or is seen, and the menu items update or restore are greyed out. (this includes all 2003, 2004, and 2005 iPod updaters supplied by Apple, including the one introuduced in November 2005)
    - Left computers without connecting the power plug, in some cases overnight, and certainly more than 30 minutes.. .for PowerBooks, also took the batteries off... as stated in other posts... no luck either.
    - Have tried all these in many different Macs... including: PowerMac 8500 with firewire card running OS9.1, OSX 10.2. Quicksilver 733 running 10.3, Gigabit Ethernet Dual 450 running OSX10.3, Gigabit Ethernet Dual 500 upgraded to Dual 1.2 Sonnet running 10.4.3, (downgraded to 10.0, and then through all updates up to 10.4.3 with no luck in neither of those OSXs), eMac running 10.2, iMac G4 running 10.3.9, PowerBook G3 Lombard running OS9.2.2 and OSX 10.2, PowerBook Pismo running OS 9.2.2 and OSX 10.3, PowerBook G4 Ti 1Ghz, running OSX 10.4.3, PowerBook Al 12" 1.3Ghz running 10.3.9 and upgraded to 10.4.3, PowerBook Al 15 1.67Ghz running 10.4.3. I also tested it on two Pcs, one running XP SP2, and the other running XP.
    - Tried 8 different FireWire cables, including 4 bought at Apple stores.
    - Can't get the iPod to go to disk mode either
Due to the different configurations of systems, software, and hardware, it is very unlikely that it is a problem outside of the iPod itself. This problem, in my case, started after I installed an update to the iPod in combination with iTunes 5.01. That leads me to believe that there is something in the code of the update that disabled the Firewire port (not completely, since it seems to charge over firewire, but no software or harddisk utility supplied by Apple or third party vendors "sees" the iPod when its connected via Firewire).
The fact that the iPod still works and plays the music I had then, (although I am not sure if the files other than music that I had stored there, which are the ones I really need to get out of it now, are still there, since I can't get it to go to disk mode) discards many other hardware failures such as a bad hard drive, etc.
If that update that disabled the Firewire ports in some iPods was only intended for the newer machines (which incidentally don't have FireWire ports - and I mention this because some users have had some success when connecting their iPods via USB, not Firewire, a luxury older iPods don't have) - it was never stated. In fact, even the new iPod updater released on November 2005 states (pretty much the same as all others) that it includes changes for certain iPods but for all others it just installs some older version of the firmware with no changes...
Sooo.... Apple ... .I know this is a tricky one, otherwise you would've already come up with a fix... .but please, acknowledge the problem, and state us if you're working on a solution or if we have to start planning on buying a new iPod... (which of course we shouldn't be forced to... )

  • How to put IPOD Shuffle I into Disk Mode ?

How to put Ipod Shuffle I into diskmode ?

When connected, in iTunes click on shuffle icon in Devices, then click on Settings tab. Scroll down and click the square in front of "Enable disk use", the adjust slider for amount of flash memory to reserve for data. Click Apply, and you're done!
When you use iPod shuffle as a disk, the status light on the front of iPod shuffle blinks orange continuously, and the iPod shuffle disk icon appears on the desktop on the Mac, or as the next available drive letter in Windows Explorer on a Windows PC. Drag files to and from iPod shuffle to copy them.
Ejecting iPod shuffle Important: If the iPod shuffle status light is blinking orange, you must eject iPod shuffle before disconnecting it from your computer. If you don’t eject iPod shuffle before disconnecting it, you could damage files on iPod shuffle.
    To eject iPod shuffle:
Click the Eject (C ) button next to iPod shuffle in the iTunes Source list. If you’re using a Mac, you can also eject iPod shuffle by dragging the iPod shuffle icon on the desktop to the Trash.
If you’re using a Windows PC, you can eject iPod shuffle by clicking the Safely Remove Hardware icon in the Windows system tray and selecting your iPod shuffle.

  • Trying to use my iPod as a hard disk

The iTunes tutorial, under "Other ways to use your iPod," gives specific instructions for enabling "your iPod to work as a portable hard disk," but the instructions do not follow what I see on my screen ("Select your iPod in the iTunes Source list" is one of them (there is no such thing. "Click the Options button on the lower right corner..." isn't there, either). Can anyone please tell me how I can set up my 3G iPod as a hard disk so I can transfer music and podcast files there without going through iTunes, which is a program I find excessively intrusive? Thanks. --Fred Powledge.

Connect your iPod and when it shows in iTunes click on it's icon to bring up the preference tabs in the main pane. In the Summary tab check the box "enable disk use" and click the Apply button in the right hand corner: Using your iPod as a storage drive

  • IPod as FCP scratch disk?

I would like to use my 5G iPod as a scratch disk for DV viddeo with Final Cut Pro, but I've read that it could damage the iPod. Is it inadvisable, or should I be fine doing this?

    I would advise against this.
The hard drive in the iPod was not designed to take this type of "beating". Using the iPod as a scratch disk would cause the iPods hard drive to be accessed a lot, which generates heat, which kills your battery and could shorten the overall life of your iPod.
    Don't take the risk.
Invest in a Firewire external hard drive instead.
EDIT: Even if you did end up using the iPod as a scratch disk... I doubt it would perform very well, for a few reasons. Slow HD in the iPod, and slow connectivity method (USB).

  • IPod as back up disk

is it not possible to use an iPod as a backup disk for time machine? I have an iPod classic and it wouldnt do it

    hello Hiro
Here's what David Pogue writes in "OS X Leopard Edition" of his missing manual series.
Time machine cannot use any of the following: 1. an iPod; 2. the iDisk; 3; your startup disk; 4. CDs, DVDs, flash drives, or any other kind of removable disk.
    Hope that helps.

  • Ipod cannot be restored, disk write error?

I cannot restore this ipod, nor can i reformat it using any program, application, or even the command line. iTunes gives me the error "unknown error - 1418", and ipod updater gives me "Disk Write Error" when i try to restore it. Does anyone know if there is any way to salvage this iPod? or should i be returning it to Costco?
this all started i think when the owner ran the batteries completely down. the ipod still gives the "connect to computer use itunes to restore screen".
this ipod was purchased in june 2006, and is in perfect condition.

See if doing a Restore on a Mac computer works
. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
    Tips
    a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iTunes 7.
    b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
    c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”

  • Load songs off ipod to computor or disk

Is there anyway to load songs off ipod to computor or disk?

For iTunes version 7 or later, then you can transfer purchased iTunes store music from the iPod to an authorized computer by using the "file/transfer purchases from iPod" menu. Note that the maximum of 5 authorized computers applies here.
Find out how to do that here.

For all other non purchased content (your own CDs etc), check out the instructions/suggestions here.
Music from iPod to computer (using option 2). This a manual method using "hidden folders" and although it works, it is a little more involved than other methods.
Much easier ways are to use one of the many 3rd party programs that copy music from the iPod to the computer.
One of the most recommended is Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
Other free programs are Pod Player, SharePod and Floola and iDump.
If you want to recover just the structure of playlists from the iPod (and not the actual song files themselves), there's iRepo for Windows. which I understand has this feature along with all the standard features for these programs.
iPodRip also has the feature enabling you to reconstruct playlists.
There is also CopyTrans. This does preserve ratings/playcounts etc if those are important to you but this program is not free. It also supports video transfer.

ipod 2G is unreadable in my car. Is there anything I can do?

If you restored the iPod to factory defaults/new iPod and are still having prtoblem then you are out of luck (assumine you are using the dock connector).
You can use the headphone jack to input to the car's AUX in if it has one or purchase an FM transmitter to broadcast to the car's FM radio.
