IPod becomes 'unsynced' from iTunes

I have a 160GB iPod classic which is completely full of music I have manually selected. Every once in a while, the iPod seems to become 'unsynced' from my iTunes. I plug it in, and the 'Sync Music' box on the Music tab is unchecked, and checking it prompts me to remove all the content from the iPod and sync it again, believing the iPod to be synced to another iTunes library. The iPod is never plugged into anything except this laptop, and I have only one iTunes library thereon. I am hoping to know either:
a) How to fix this so that iTunes 're-recognises' the iPod, or
b) How to back up the long, long list of albums I have selected by hand to go on the iPod, as this process usually takes about six hours. I would be happy to erase and sync if I could somehow retrieve and replace the list of synced albums from the iPod itself, or from iTunes if it holds on to that information.
I realise that I really should have, after the first or second time this happened, made a playlist containing all the music I wanted to sync, to or from which I could add or remove albums easily. Stitch in time, etc. Apologies if this has been covered before. Searching returns mountains and mountains of irrelevant results. Thanks in advance.

Hello Love Muffin,
And welcome to Apple Discussions!
Have you tried a simple reset of the iPod? To do this, press and hold the Center and Menu buttons together until the Apple logo appears. Make sure to do this, with the iPod still connected.
Does that do any good?

I want to import songs frm my Ipod to my itunes library.  Songs were ripped from CDs to the ipod not purchased from itunes store...how can this be done?

You would have to let itunes rip the songs from the cd's, or you would have to copy the music from the computer which ripped cd's.
iTunes does not support transferring music from the ipod unless it was purchased from the store.

  • IPod Ejection Error from iTunes

When I have my second generation Nano connected to iTunes and I click on the ejection icon to remove it from iTunes I get the following message: "The iPod Bill's iPod cannot be ejected because it contains files that are in use by another application". I am running Windows Vista and have the latest updates for iTunes and my iPod. Any help on resolving this would be appreciated.

I did check the settings and cannot find anything on how to not scan ipds or if it is even scanning it at all.

  • Music on iPod but deleted from iTunes Library

Hello, please help... I have accidently deleted 36GB of music from my external hard drive although currently the music is on my iPod (classic). I do have all the DVD's and CD's but do not want to download them all again. Is there anyway I can download the music that is on my iPod back to my PC or external hard drive? I am terrified of plugging my iPod back into my PC (which is showing an empty library) for fear that the music will also get deleted from my iPod.
Also, reason this happened is that everytime I added music to external hard drive - and then "Add folder to Library" - I would end up with duplicates showing in my iTunes Library.

If your iPod is set to update automatically you need to take care connecting to an empty iTunes. You can use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys together. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer: iTunes - Keyboard Shortcuts for Windows
When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that way you can continue to use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone

Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you only want to copy your purchases to the computer that can be done using iTunes, you'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
For everything else (including purchases) there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. I use Senuti but have a look at the web pages and documentation for the others too. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here (you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos and games as well):

TuneAid Mac only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
    YamiPod Mac & Windows

iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
TouchCopy Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
Keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync.

  • Ipod incorrect update from itunes

I recently connected my 30GB Ipod Video to my laptop running Windows XP Pro. Once connected itunes said it needed an update once updated it doesn't work now. On the screen of the ipod whilst disconnecte4d it says to connect to itunes and reformat it. Also trying to access it through My computer when its in disk mode or normal mode it says it isn't formatted and asks if i want to e format it. I don't want to format it because there are files on iot that i would like to retrieve, is there anyway of retrieving these files? Also has anyone else had this problem?

One major thing i forgot to mention was that itunes didn't recognise my ipod as a 5th gen and updated it for another ipod, thats why this topic was called incorrect update from itunes.

  • Corrupt song on iPod Touch downloaded from iTunes

How do I get rid of it?  And then get the uncorrupted file from iTunes?  And what does the iCloud has to do with this?
(digression:  I tried to get help through "Report a Problem" button, but I ended up wasting 45 minutes with Apple Support pages and could find no way to get to a real Support page.  And so I am trying here.)

I fixed it myself.  I "deleted" the songs from iTunes on computer into the iCloud. Then "hid" the songs from my Purchase list in the iTune store.  Then I "unhid them" on iTunes store and redownloaded them from iCloud to iTunes on computer.  Then did a Sync of my iPod Touch with iTunes on computer.  Now my 4 songs are playing without stuttering and stopping.

  • Is it possible to put videos on ipod then delete from itunes???

I really like the videos but im worried about the mem space on my comp....is it possible to put the videos on ur ipod, delete them in itunes and ur comp, but have them stay on ur ipod?? i allso would like them to stay there even when i go back to update...because with songs if i delete them from my itunes list they delete from my ipod when i update..

You have to change your ipod/itunes settings. When you ipod is connected click the ipod button on he bottom right corner of itunes. Look through the settings and make sure you have checked "manually update" your ipod. If you do this then when you connect your ipod back to your computer you can choose when goes on and off and nothing will be automatically be deleted.
    Hope this Helps!

  • How do you delete artist on ipod after deleted from itunes

I've deleted all artists from ITunes but they still appear on my Ipod

There's a couple of ways you can do it. If the iPod is plugged into iTunes go to iTunes in the source pane on the left expand the arrow songs or (music) and it will show a list of all songs currently on the iPod. You can then delete from that list there or you can delete it right off from your iPod by swiping across the song until you see a delete button come up and then hit delele and then it should be gone.

  • Automatically Downloading an iPod's Capacity from iTunes

I have a 160 GB iPod classic and my iTunes library has just recently exceeded the size that my iPod will hold as I have always downloaded my entire iTunes library to my iPod. I know I can create a playlist to download, but is there an automated way to download (randomly, by date-added, or other criteria) as much of your iTunes library as the iPod will hold? I don't want to go through 12,000+ songs selecting most of them and omitting enough to not exceed the storage capacity of my iPod. Now when I synch my iPod with iTunes, it tries to download the entire library and errors off due to not enough space on the iPod. Thanks.

Thanks for the suggestion. That must be in the Mac version of iTunes. I have the Windows version and when I connect my iPod and go to the Music Tab, the only options for synching are (1) Entire Music Library and (2) Selected playlists, artists, and genres. There is a checkbox to "include music videos" but no option to automatically fill free spance. I am using iTunes version 9 for Windows. Thanks

  • How do I copy Ipod games downloaded from ITunes Store to my new computer?

I've a new computer, backup of music library already on ext. hardrive, but what about my Ipod games? How can I copy my purchases on my new computer? Please help my step by step.Tks

Are the games still on your old computer? Do you still have access to this? Are you using iTunes version 8 or 9?
Have a look at this article which tells you how iTunes media is organized for both iTunes 8 and iTunes 9. It's just a matter of copying the relevant folder from one computer to another.
You can use you iPod as an external disc to do this.
See: How to use your iPod to move music and media to a new computer.

  • Ipod wont update from itunes

my ipod was not updating with new songs i had downloaded. it would just say ipod updated and nothing happened. so i wiped it clean using the restore function to start from scratch and i am getting the same situation. it won't update any songs now and just says ipod updated. not sure what to do. anyone have any advice?

    Hello,
Go to "Edit> preferences> iPod" and set your option for "manual".
Now, go to your iTunes library, and select what songs you want to put on your iPod, then drag-and-drop them into the name of your iPod in the left source area in iTunes.
You may want to simply manually manage your music like this, dragging the songs from the library, and simply dropping them to your iPod. This might avoid the kind of issues you were having.

  • Ipod 5G missing from itunes, freezes with 'do not disconnect'

my ipod simply cant be seen on itunes and whenever i plug it in, it will freeze with 'do not disconnect' and not able to do a legal, safe removel.
hav to remove it illegally and do the 'reset' to clear the 'do not disconnect' message.
ipod is still functioning and can only be charged using direct power, but will freeze when its plug into usb port.
    any help on this?
    Thanks

this may seem crazy but.........i had a similar problem for quite a while. my ipod worked perfectly and then all of a sudden for no reason (i thought) my ipod would stall out. the do not disconnect would flash and i couldn't do anything. this happened to me regularly. i did the restore and all that jazz.
one day i was seriously in tears about it. my husband said he would mess with it and voila! it worked perfectly. was he magic? hardly but he took the case off of it. i didn't have a big hulking case but a rubberized one and i guess the bottom piece was just a bit off. it seemed to connect but in reality it wasn't making a good connection.
i took the case off and haven't used it since and have not had a similar problem. its a thought.........if you have a case or something that might be keeping it from making a good connection.

  • Ipod and apps from Itunes

I am not sure if my Ipod is a forth or fifth generation. I bought and apps from the Itunes store noticed it didn't show up on my Ipod and then noticed that the app said for Itouch and Iphone, do they not have apps for plain Ipods?
Good thing the app wasn't expensive I would not be happy.

    Hello twilightmom,
Yes, Apps are only compatible with the iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch. The closest thing you will find to Apps for the iPod Nano are the *iPod Click Wheel Games* that are available in the iTunes store.
