IPod boots to black bar on screen, nothing else

I got back from the gym a few hours ago and went to plug my IPod (video) in to charge. Now when I boot it, the apple logo appears for a split-second, then disappears and a black bar covers the lower third of the screen. It doesnt show up on the computer at all when i plug in the USB. When I do the 'hold menu+select' trick to reset it, the same thing happens (apple logo then black bar), and I can't restore it because it doesnt show up on the computer. Is there anything I can do, or do I have a new, very expensive paperweight?

This is almost certainly an issue that requires service.

    Sorry, I had not checked my older threads for a bit.... you might want to consider checking your hard drive's health. It's not a question if any hard drive will fail, but when. Check the S.M.A.R.T. status in Disk Utility and, if you can boot from your install CD, run repair disk. Then, take a look at this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=12461885&#12461885
    And run the Apple Hardware test:

  • When I start iWeb only the Navi Bar appears but nothing else. What to do?

    when I start iWeb only the Navigation Bar appears but nothing else and I can't use the program. I have the latest version and I use iLife11

    Try the following:
    close iWeb.
    delete the iWeb preference file, com.apple.iWeb.plist, that resides in your Home/Library/Preferences folder.
    go to your Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iWeb folder and delete its contents.
    launch iWeb and try again.
    If that doesn't help continue with:
    move the domain file from your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder to the Desktop.
    launch iWeb, create a new test site, save the new domain file and close iWeb.
    go to the your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder and delete the new domain file.
    move your original domain file from the Desktop to the iWeb folder.
    launch iWeb and try again.
    Lastly, select an album in iPhoto and use the Share ➙ iWeb ➙ Photo Page menu option. It might take a couple of tries.

    I think we need more clarification.
    What do you mean by "download"? Only updates are available as downloads, the System software has to be installed from a DVD.

  • IPod Stuck on black software update screen! someone Help

    1. before i started getting these Messages..my iPod was working fine. as i got an Update stating there was a new firmware out.
    (4.3.5) so i download and update which was one of the options. everything seemd to be working properly, until my phone stayed at a Black screen with apple logo and Download status bar.
    Then after having the iPod Plugged in for 5 hours i disconnected the device and pluged it back in. the Above picture shows what happened after that.
    ("iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode. You must restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes")
    2. After the messages came up, this Pop up bvox came up and i pressed the "restore and Update" button and let it download the software again...
    3. i Open up iTunes and see that is says "Restoring iPod software" but the bar indicates that its about a few seconds from being done.. but 5 more hours and its still in the same place. it hasnt moved..
    4. This is what my iPod is stuck at after trying the same methods of getting my iPod to turn back on.
    WHAT DO I DO TO GET MY IPOD BACK WORKING???

    The worst of these background programs, MacKeeper requires you remove it with third party instructions:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3036
    You should not use cache cleaners on any system other than a backed up system.
    You should not multitask while attempting to back your data.
    Open the Activity Viewer to determine what other processes may be running and determine if one of those is one you recognize that is third party.
    Antivirus and firewall software are not essential, unless you practice unsafe computing in the first place.  In those instances ClamAV and Sophos are probably the best bets about being the least intrusive.

  • 2 Vertical Black Bars Across Screen...

    Anyone know about or experienced vertical black bars (2) across the monitor after returning from sleep or standby mode?
    I'm just worried my computer will crap out on me when it's most inconvenient so I'm trying to guage what computer problems/elderly computer symptoms I'll be dealing with in it's decline. It's only from 2009, but it's heavily used and has lots of graphic design and media software on it.
    Note: The SD card recently stopped working, and the Genius bar determined it was a mechanical failure. Also, the CD burn hasn't been working for a while.
    Using a Macbook pro os x, leopard, purchased 2009.

    It only happens for a split second, and before/while the computer is waking up so when I try to take a screen shot, it doesn't work because it's not fully on yet. However, I will take a pic with some other device so I do have a picture of it. And I FOR SURE have all my data backed up plus on a flash.
    Thanks for the advice.

  • Black Bar on Screen with Text (accidental key combo, can't get rid of it)

    In a mad typing dash 2 days ago, I accidentally hit a key combo that placed a black bar in the middle of my screen with the words "Gmail - friday - my email address" (I was in Gmail composing a message at the time). It's visible at all times, using all apps, and on my desktop. I've tried rebooting, quitting all apps, checking my system prefs, looking for answers online, all to no avail. I can't click on it, highlight it or drag it to the trash and I'm at a loss...any suggestions? Many thanks!

    Were you able to fix this? I have it too..

  • FaceTime has black bar on screen before call

    When I launch FaceTime on my iPad 4 (retina), I get almost half the screen in portrait mode as a black bar. When I place the call, the screen is fine. This did not happen with iOS 7. Anyone got any ideas?

    Thanks Bob for this, it has focused my efforts. It seems to be a bit 'random' to say the least, and my nearest Apple Store is a 100 mile round trip to get to. This is very much an iOS 8 issue, but it seems that dear old Yosemite has a problem as well which wasn't helping my diagnosis (no audio when call is initiated). I shall take my iPad in to my "local" store and see what the resident Geniuses make of it.
    Once again, thanks for your input - as a developer it gets a bit lonely here, but when problems surface, it can become alarming!

    Welcome to Discussions racb,
    It is possible that one of your RAM (memory) modules has worked loose.
    Intel-based Mac: Startup sequence and error codes, symbols
    Use the ejectors/locking mechanism to dislodge the modules, then reinstall by pushing firmly with thumbs/fingers. Secure in place using the ejector/locking mechanism. When properly installed (fully seated), the top of each module at both ends will not protrude above the level of the plastic guides into which the RAM is inserted.
    Intel-based iMac: Installing and replacing memory (RAM)
    If this does not resolve your problem, try http://www.apple.com/support/mac101/help/2/
    Edit-
    It is extremely rare that original RAM fails and needs to be replaced. Loose RAM is much more common.

  • MBP won't boot. Pwer light, some hum, nothing else.

    My 17" Macbook Pro (2008) suddenly this morning would not boot.  The power light comes on.  There is some minor humming. And there's nothing else: no startup screen, no startup tone, keyboard doesn't work, no display.  I tried resetting SMC. I did all the other things Apple support says. I put in an Apple Care CD in hopes TechTools would deal with it.  Nothing, and now I can't get it out, either.  I even connected an external monitor, with no luck.
    It has a TechTool partition, but since it never tries to boot, I can't select it as the startup.
    Short of a trip to a service place (50 miles), any ideas on what else to try?
    Thanks in advance.
    Rob

    Since you have had this since 2008, it's about that time when your hard drive may give out. It sounds like this is the problem in your case. Apple uses Hitachi hard drives, if that helps. Unless I am wrong, you will need to take it to someplace, preferrably Apple, and have it replaced.

  • Firefox opens a blank pink screen nothing else, how can I fix this?

    When I open my firefox browser all I get is a blank pink screen and nothing else. I have uninstalled and reinstalled it several times and nothing works. What can I do to fix it?

    Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.
    You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:
    * [http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/default.aspx Microsoft Safety Scanner]
    * [http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free/ MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware]
    * [http://support.kaspersky.com/faq/?qid=208283363 TDSSKiller - AntiRootkit Utility]
    * [http://www.surfright.nl/en/hitmanpro/ Hitman Pro]
    * [http://www.eset.com/us/online-scanner/ ESET Online Scanner]
    [http://windows.microsoft.com/MSE Microsoft Security Essentials] is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista/XP if you don't already have one.
    Further information can be found in the [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware]] article.

  • Ipod mini has black spot on screen

    Hi, I have had my Ipod Mini for about 2 months and yesterday I saw a black spot on my screen. There is a big spot then other little ones. I have tried re booting, but nothing changes. Please help.

    I think what happened is that your ipod may have been in the sun too long because the same thing happens to my ipod when it sits in the sun. try letting it sit in a dark spot for a few days.

  • Black Bar Center Screen After Crack

    what can you guys tell me about this iPhone4 CDMA destruction?
    this is phone is registered to Verizon but not activated. as it's broken, my friend got her replacement and gave this to me to deal with if I so choose.
    also curious if I can get it unlocked and flashed over to metroPCS. cost and whatnot.
    thanks.

    Just to clarify, I was at the Apple Store today and talked with someone at the Genius Bar and told him the above issue ended up being a battery problem and he replied it was most likely the EFI that was corrupt and with the new battery that was replaced.  They had done a diagnostic on the original battery when I took my iPhone in the first time and said it was fine.  He said that diagnosic unfortunately doesn't test the EFI.

  • White Screen; Nothing Else

    Installed 10.4.11, last night, and all was fine.
    This morning my MacBook awoke with no problem but
    while I was creating a new folder I got the spinning
    beach ball that I watched for 10 minutes before trying a
    force quit with no luck.
    I shut down using the power button and upon powering up
    all I got was a White Screen with no Apple Logo or spinner
    below logo.
    This white screen's only change was to show a folder with
    a question mark over and over.
    This tells me the MacBook can't find the start up disk?
    My next move was to put in Disk Warrior, power down, power up and
    hold "C" key to boot from disk warrior.
    Disk warrior came up on screen but not from boot up.
    Disk warrior tells me I am running on start up disc and
    cannot perform any tasks.
    I get to restart from disc warrior but I am taken back to the white screen;
    no logo; no nothing.
    DisK warrior will not eject so, If I leave the MacBook on, eventually it will start from disk warrior but not from a boot up.
    I have tried resetting by taking out battery and holding down the power key for
    5 seconds with no change.
    Tried target mode; nothing.
    Can anyone tell me what is happening here?
    Any and all comments will be greatly appreciated.

    I installed the 10.4.11 update, and couldn't even get into my computer anymore - I had a white start-up screen with the Apple logo and revolving loading symbol.
    So I called an Applecare rep who told me "oh yea, some people are having trouble with that update". Than told me to go back and install from the startup disk that came with my MacBook Pro (came with 10.4.8) (phone call and wait time was about 45 min)
    So I reinstalled from my startup disk (about 1.5 hours later) Than I had to install 10.4.9, than 10.4.10.(another 45 min) So now that's the point I'm at, but still my iLife '08 programs don't open. (they should have worked with 10.4.9)
    Arg! so this whole process is going on 3+ hours of my time and I still can't open my iLife '08 programs (as you can see I'm pretty frustrated)
    So my questions:
    #1 - Does anyone know how I can get the iLife '08 programs to open? If the answer is re-install, do I first have to delete what is already on my HD?
    #2 - Since the apple rep told me "don't install 10.4.11 since it's a problem" what is up with that? Will it ever work? Am I stuck at 10.4.10 now? Should I care? What does that mean?
    thanks,
    woofdog
