IPod broken out of the box - Apple Store calls me a liar

I purchased a 5G iPod a couple of days ago, and when I opened it, there was what appears to be a hairline fracture in the LCD (not on the outside of the screen, but on the inside), which caused the margins of the crack to be black and squiggly.
When I took this to my local Apple Store (Austin, Barton Creek Mall), the employees took turns, in increasing rank, calling me a liar. The accusation was made in the sissy, evasive tones that store managers take, but what it boiled down to was a refusal to exchange my device because he insisted that what I was telling him (that it was like that out of the box) was not true. I was treated with such polite distain and condescension that I left the store with a vow not to purchase any more Mac products there... ever. Not a mild conviction either, as I run a small business and tend to purchase $5 - $7k worth of Mac products annually.
I discussed the issue with a physics fanatic whom I am acquainted with, and he seemed to be under the conviction that a flat plane of a fragile substance, no matter how well protected in the device or the box, would crack if dropped far enough and at a certain angle. He said the conditions necessary to crack it that way would be fairly rare - thus explaining why the issue had never presented itself to the fussy store manager - but not so rare as to be unplausible or incredible.
What I was most disturbed by, however, was that the store was more willing to risk screwing me out of $300 than they were to risk eating the replacement. I had assumed that the store would err on the side of taking care of the customer, but was very sorely mistaken.
However, now I'm just ranting. My topic for discussion is this: Has anybody else experienced this? A defect out of box that was rejected as your own abuse of the iPod, or a screen cracked against odds?

Hello Jeremy.
Sorry to hear you had this experience at the Apple Store but I would contact AppleCare and as hard as it may be for you, I would refrain from ranting about the Apple Austin Store when doing so explaining this fracture was present when the iPod was first opened.
Apple will send you a shipping box and return label. When returned, Apple will run a test on the iPod to determine if the crack was caused by abuse. Obviously this screen fracture was caused during shipment or was present before being packaged that went unnoticed but I don't see you have any other option at this point.
Or you can use the iPod service request form.

  • MySQL broken out of the box - error 2002.

MySQL is broken out of the box - 10.5.2 server. Brand new Xserve, an untouched OS X Server installation, no tinkering was done *at all*.
    Here's what I did:
    1. Opened Server Admin.
    2. Added MySQL service.
    3. Went to Settings.
    4. Changed "Database location" to be on another, faster drive in the Xserve.
    5. Clicked "Start MySQL" button
    6. Opened Terminal, typed in "mysql" and hit Return.
    What do I get?
ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)
There's no mysql.sock file there, nor in /temp. Running lsof while the mysql daemon is "started up" shows there is a mysql.sock file in /var/mysql though. Very odd.
Any ideas? I'd like to avoid rolling my own install of MySQL, and stick with the built-in version.

Might [http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302977|http://docs.info.apple.c om/article.html?artnum=302977] help here? That's for Mac OS X Server Tiger 10.4.4 and not Leopard 10.5 yes, but looks applicable here.
And FWIW, this basic case is fairly standard MySQL socket behavior on various platforms. That the GUI apparently allowed you to shoot yourself in the foot here is another discussion.

  • Buying New - Which models are Windows 7, 64-bit ready out of the box?

Have always had HP printers and love them.  In reading the posts many questions are for Windows 7 and existing printers.  I am in the market for a new inkjet for text.  Don't want an all-in-one.  Can anyone tell me which HP printer models are Windows 7, 64-bit ready out of the box?  Store personel readily point to the "Windows 7 ready" stickers on display models, however, look confused when I press the 64 vs 32 bit issue.  Thanks

Win 7 64-bit will install software and drivers written for Win 7 32-bit without any problems. I've presonally installed hundreds of printers on Win 7 64-bit without any problems. Do you have a specific printer in mind?

Found an Ipod in the ground. It's disabled and the home button is broken. Can I go to apple store and restore for me for free?

Apple might be able to restore it, but most likely not. You can pay apple $150 to replace it, but make shure to not mention that you found it.

  • Brand New 30g Video Ipod...dead right out of the box

So I take my new ipod out of the box and it wont turn on. I plug it up to the outlet charger and the screen lights up but says nothing and does nothing. It makes a little humming noise and gets very very hot also. Plugging it up to computer hasn't helped, it doesn't even light up with it. Anyone have any ideas?

    Welcome to Discussions!
Have you tried resetting the iPod by holding the Menu and Center buttons?
If that doesn't change anything, it sounds like you received a defective iPod.
You can 1) return it to the store or 2)fill out a service request here: http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod

The "device may need service" means a hardware problem. In that case make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

  • IPod Touch 1st Generation doesn't work directly out of the box?

I just bought a first generation iPod touch and first things first I plug it into my PC. Nothing happens on the iPod and on iTunes I immediately get a message saying "iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode. You must restore it before it is usable with iTunes." So I hit OK and click yes to the message about restoring it to its factory settings, considering that's how it should be anyway since I had literally just taken it out of the box. I finally get a reaction from the iPod, and it's a solid white screen followed by the apple logo, and then for about 5 minutes iTunes says it's "prepaying the iPod for restore..." followed by the error message "The iPod "iPod" could not be restored, an unknown error occured. (1604)" Then the iPod disconnects from iTunes and proceeds to be frozen at the Apple logo screen. I have looked at all the troubleshooting walkthroughs and none of them work because I have never seen a screen on the iPod other than the Apple logo, it seems as though the only way to fix this is if I just take it back and get a replacement

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Is the device brand new? - the Second Generation have been around for some time now so I hope you got a good price on it.
Have a read of this article which explains how to deal with the 1604 error:

  • Is the iPod video supposed to suck out of the box?

I just purchased a brand new 30 GB iPod video and it's awful right out of the box. Everytime I start it up for some reason I get that Apple restart screen but nothing is restarted. When I click on a song under and album it takes 30 seconds to a minute for music to even start and when it does it's two or three songs later than what I actually clicked on. It's also incredibly slow switching songs and menus, especially songs.
I heard the iPod videos can just be like this and many are. Is this true? If so, back to the drawing board, Apple.
Also, is anyone else upset it doesnt support firewire?

I read it now supports firewire but i don't believe it. Well I got a new a 30 Gig Video Ipod too and it works like a charm, you probaly got a defected model, it happens, and if you have a warranty get it replaced because even the limited warranty from apple will take it back if its defected (just don't say you dropped it even if you did).

  • IPod Shuffle (2nd Gen) not lighting up out of the box even afr 2hrs of chrg

Can somebody tell me what is going on here? This is the second shuffle that (I brought back the first one to circuit city) I can't get to work out of the box. That is, after charging for 2 hrs (I've tried to charge via my outlet as well) I can't get any lights to show up.
    What gives?
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

So far, you hadn't really described what you were >doing...
is the "wall charger" an Apple iPod USB Power >Adapter? >Does the Shuffle's LED show continuous orange >while in >the dock?
Plugging in the dock to my outlet per the apple ipod usb power adapter. Looked at the light immediately and no orange or any lights what so ever. So, I figured it needed to be charged, Apple specs say 2 hrs for 80% charge, 4 hours for full. I left the thing on there all night long when I went to bed. Got up. Checked the shuffle and no lights.
Question: is the (oranage) light supposed to come on immediatly after it's plugged in?
The fact that this is your 2nd one is interesting.
Apple specs claim 4 hours to fully charge the Shuffle but >that's optimistic... many here have experienced much >longer charging time
This is pretty assembly IMHO as this si pretty frustrating regarless if it's operator error or a another defective unit.
Any more information would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks again for your response.

Use iTunes on your computer.  With the iPad connected, sign into your Apple account and check for updates.
Doing this should straighten out the problem.

  • Brand New Ipod touch 4th gen  right earphone jack not working out of the box. Bought at Wal-Mart yesterday. Are we missing something in the set up or should we return it?

We just purchased an ipod touch 4th gen 8 gb from Wal Mart. OUt of the box the right headphone is not working. Tried numerous pairs of headphones..tried the mono settings and nothing is working. Is there a setting we are missing or should we just return it?

If the headphone plug is fully inserted, I would return the iPod for a replacement

  • IPod Nano 7th Generation - Bad out of the box?

I just purchased the iPod Nano 7th generation today and came home to sync it with iTunes.  iTunes recognizes the device for a second then I receive a "Disk was not ejected properly.  If possible, always eject a disk before unplugging it or turning it off." message.  I can see the iPod in iTunes for a second then it disappears.  As I keep it plugged in it will recognize, disappear, reapear then disappear again.
I purchased an iPod Touch 5th generation today and that is working just fine (as well as synching my other iDevices). Is this nano bad out of the box?

Same thing happened to me. It did download the playlists I wanted, but the next time I plugged it in it acted as though it was being plugged in for the very first time, (regsitration and set up etc.)
But the really bad news is the BATTERY LIFE. maybe get one hour of play time before it drains to zero.
    Anyone else have this issue?

  • Are there Apple translated (i18n) resource files ("out-of-the-box") for Objective C?  In the SDK?

    Hello, experts:
From previous experience, I know that both Adobe and Oracle provide some "out-of-the-box" translations for their respective UI language.  I'm new to Apple development and Objective C and looking to determine if any such localization support is provided by Apple for Objective C.  Hint:  Thinking it might be either included in the SDK or downloadable but I could not find any such information.  Does Apple provide any translated resources?
Thank you in advance for your help.

To follow up on Tom's advice, if you go directly to the downloads directory:
    https://developer.apple.com/internationalization/downloads/
There are resource files meant to be used by the old AppleGlot that provide a lot of Apple's translations.

Ipad 3 Fresh out of the box today, simply does not charge. Thoughts? (other than take it back to apple)

If it is just out of the box, I would take it straight back to Apple and ask them to fix it.
Why should you have to mess around with fixing a device?
