Ipod can't do a restore - now what??

Help! My daughter forgot her password - tried to do a restore - have it hooked up to a computer to do the restore, goes through the download and then nothing...... the ipod touch just says "connect to Itunes" but I've already done that. Itunes comes up with an error message that "unable to connect - please put in the passcode" The only thing I can possible think of is that the ipod is not connected to the original computer that I used when I set the ipod up - that computer is dead. Anyone have any other ideas I can try? Thanks!

Try placing the iPod in recovery mode and then restoring it via iTunes. For recovery mode see:

  • I restored my ipod, when I went to put everything back on it, I got a message that said, "an error writing to the device, can not sinc.  Then it said the required disc can not be found.  Now what do I do, I have all of this music and apps that I can't get

Before I restored my ipod, I backed it up then I updated and restored.  The problem is when I went to put everything back on it, I got a message saying that an error writing to the device, can not sync.  Then another message appeared saying that "the required disc can not be found.  Now what do I do?

Try resetting the iPOd. Nothing will be lost.
Reset iPod touch:  Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Also, delet the iPod Phot Cache folder for the second error. For its loation see:

I want to update the OS of the Macbook Pro I bought today to Lion, but at "purchase date" I can only choose 2011. Now what?

Sorry but I don't completely understand your question or what you are trying to do.
If you purchase a new MBP Today, Jan 3 2012, it should already have OS X Lion 10.7.x installed on it.
Only some left over early 2011 model that stores may have had sitting around would of come with Snow Leopard 10.6.8. Or even if you bought a Reburbished model from Apple it would of still came from them with Lion.
    So my questions are.
    1) Did you buy this new from a authorized Apple store or reseller?
    2) If not new was it purchased from an authorized Apple store or reseller?
    3) To my knowledge when trying to do updates to the OS there is no check of purchase date. So what exactly are you doing that asks for a purchase date?
If new then just use the Software Updates in the Apple Logo menu item.
If not new and it originally came with Snow Leopard or Leopard you will have to buy OS X Lion at the Online Apple Store. If that is the case then nyou need to put in the original date the unit was purchased NEW and or manufactured. That way the Online Apple Store can tell if Lion will function on that model properly.

Are you trying to reinstall Firefox? If you open up Internet Explorer on your computer, can you get online? If you can't get online there then you likely have some sort of connection issue.
If you Can get online with Internet Explorer, simply go to [http://www.getfirefox.com www.getfirefox.com], and press the Download Now button. Click "Run" then install Firefox on your machine. If you still have troubles after installing Firefox, please let me know and we can fix those.

  • Stuck in recovery ... can't erase ... now what?

Okay, I've tried it all! Now what? Is it worth taking to a Mac fixer or should I pitch it and buy new. My son has had his Nano 2nd generation for 3 years with no problems. BTW: I've updated to 7.7, I've set the ipod to disk mode, I've left it charging for at least 30 minutes. I opened disk utility and clicked delete (and it won't! disk utility just quits). I get one of three messages in iTunes when I connect and reconnect: iTunes has detected an ipod that may be corrupt. You should restore" (but I can't because then iTunes promptly quits) OR "You have plugged in a device that Mac OS cannot read." OR iTunes detects an iPod in recovery mode."
So break it to me. Would it be worth getting fixed or do I tell my son, well, you got 3 good years out of it ... at $230! Arghhhh!

Did you try forcing the iPod into disk mode first?
Ensure the HOLD switch is OFF so that there is NO orange color showing beneath the switch. Then, press and hold the MENU and the SELECT (center) buttons together for about 10 seconds, until you see an Apple logo. When you see the Apple, IMMEDIATELY press and hold the SELECT (center) and the PLAY/PAUSE buttons together until you see a check mark, and the iPod says "Disk Mode, OK to Disconnect."
If not, try that and then see if you can either restore through iTunes (I'd try that first) or reformat through Disk Utility. If you can reformat it with Disk Utility, try to restore in iTunes after that.
If it is absolutely dead, you might want to consider replacement options. Sounds like the nano is probably a 4 GB.
Apple can replace it out of warranty for $99 USD
    (from: http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/service/prices/#us )
and the replacement will carry 90 days of hardware coverage.
You can also purchase a refurbished 4GB new nano for $99, which gives you your full year warranty. (I recommend refurbished products from Apple without hesitation... several iPods and this MacBook, no problems).

I believe you can also trade it in at an Apple retail store for 10% off of a new iPod.

  • Just got my iPod back from service...now what???

I was forced to send my iPod in to be serviced, due to the Folder/Exclamation Point Error.
I just got it back today. Now what? How can I make this iPod, which is not my old one, but a completely new iPOd, work with my iTunes?
All I really want are the songs I have on my computer to be loaded on to my iPod. Anyone know what I need to do?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, Sam.
Assuming you have a good connection you simply download and run the latest firmware updater from this site. Retore the iPod (which will format it for your PC) and then completely resync it with iTunes and you're good to go.

  • Cant get iTunes to recognize iPod   can't do a restore

    Hello,
After having the iPod Touch4 for one week i can no longer get iTunes to recognize it when i connect it.
1/ The USB cable is fine
2/ I have completed all troubleshooting steps suggested by apple support
    3/ I have tried this - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EdSLzIQTxqE
    and this one - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8pVbIeSfvfI
4/ I have uninstalled and re-installed the latest iTunes
So, my next step was to do a reset back to the original factory settings (even the ipod is only a week old). When i click on restore in iTunes (because it recognizes the iPod is in recovery mode) i get the message - 'the iPod software update server can not be contacted. Make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active or try again later.
I have now gone through the troubleshooting section on the apple website with this issue and now can not even restore the iPod.
Can anyone else give me any advice as i can only think i am going to have to end up taking the thing back for a swap/refund which is pretty frustrating when it worked perfectly for a week and then started playing up for no apparent reason.......

You did not specify what Apple troubleshooting you tried.  It is easy to miss Apple articles.

  • IPod won't sync after restore - now iTunes freezes up and iPod is empty

Two days ago my iPod started acting up - playing a song for about the first 10 seconds, then freezing up. I did the 5 R's - many, many resets, switching the USB port, reinstalling the software, and several restore attempts. The new and more pressing issue now is that, after a restore attempt, the iPod syncs to about song #50 (of about 1500) and then iTunes freezes up. Because of the restore, the iPod is now empty...no tunes...and I can't get it to sync. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
I fear this is a glitch with the new update? What is the solution here?

I am having similar problems. My ipod was working perfectly fine in the morning and then at lunch time it said i needed to "connect to computer source and restore" i didnt have a computer at the time so i waited till i got home. when i got home i let it sit on my computer charging before i did anything. i took it off when it was fully charged and went to go listen to it. i listened to one song and in the middle of the second song, the music started to flicker and skip. i just shut off, when i turned it back on again ALL THE CONTENT ON MY IPOD HAD JUST DISSAPEARED. i was so angry and ive been calling around, reading the internet site pages and trying all that i can to fix this **** of a problem but nothing works. HELP ME PLEASE!!

  • I have an iPod touch 1stgen and I purchased the most recent update and downloaded it well when it went to updat my iPod touch it won't restore it what should I do

I purchased the most rent iOS download from iTunes to update my 1st gen iPod touch and after it was done downloading it started to restore my iPod with the update and now my iPod wont update and it keeps showing error 1604 and won't come out of recovery mode how do I  fix it so I can update my iPod touch with this software. Thank you

    Error 1604
This error is often related to USB timing. Try changing USB ports, using a different dock connector to USB cable, and other available USB troubleshooting steps (troubleshooting USB connections. If you are using a dock, bypass it and connect directly to the white Apple USB dock connector cable. If the issue persists on a known-good computer, the device may need service.
If the issue is not resolved by USB isolation troubleshooting, and another computer is not available, try these steps to resolve the issue:
Connect the device to iTunes, confirm that the device is in Recovery Mode. If it's not in Recovery Mode, put it into Recovery Mode.
Restore and wait for the error.
    When prompted, click OK.
Close and reopen iTunes while the device remains connected.
The device should now be recognized in Recovery Mode again.
    Try to restore again.
If the steps above do not resolve the issue, try restoring using a known-good USB cable, computer, and network connection.

I backed up my i-pad4 to my itunes via pc.  I-pad now had i-tunes symbol and cord on screen.  I am unable to restore system.  I have the newsest version of i-tunes and have turned off firewall so it would reload.  Any ideas to get it to restore?

I went back to iOS 7 and my backup file is restoring but when its done nothing is on my phone still and only takes 11-15 minutes to restore the backup instead of taking 25+ minutes like usual so I guess the backup is corrupted. How can I fix this?
