IPod cannot be used error message
I recently upgraded to iTunes version 10.1.2.17. Now when I hook up my iTouch, I get the message: "This ipod cannot be used because the required software is not installed. Run the iTunes installer to remove iTunes, then install iTunes again." I've tried two different iTouch's and get the same message.
I had a somewhat similar problem. The way I solved it was to uninstall all the Apple software I had, reboot, reinstall and reboot. In my case I uninstalled Bonjour, iTunes, Quicktime and the Apple Device Drivers(I think that is what it is called.) That solved my problem.
You might want give this a go.

Help! error message 'The IPod cannot be restored' error message 1418
basically the last time I tried to sync my ipod i had run out of memory. I went back and deleted some of the playlists and then why i tried to sync it wouldn't let me because some of the playlists had changed.
I then restored the settings on my IPOD and realised how to change the settings in ITUNES.
Every time i connect my ipod it says cannot sync re the playlists when I go in and then change them and click on sync it doesn't seem to be able to pick up the connection.
when i tried to restore to factory settings got the message cannot be restored error 1418... Any ideas anyone?
Many thanksHi, I am having a similar problem with an i pod. I recently bought a second hand i pod for my son's 6th birthday pressie, from a friend who had a mac pc. I have plugged the i pod into my pc which is windows xp, and the message comes up saying the i pod needs to be restored. Everytime I try to restore it, the error message 1418 comes up. I have followed ALL the links on the help pages to try and restore this thing, but NOTHING has worked. This i pod is heading back to the original owner if I can't get a solution from someone, and my son's birthday is getting closer and closer!! PLEASE someone HELP ME!!!!!

System extension cannot be used error message
I keep getting a message:
The system extension “/System/Library/Extensions/IOFireWireWDHID.kext” was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product’s vendor for an update.
I no longer use a Western Digital external hard drive so I am not sure how to remove this file so that I no longer get this message. Can anyone take me through the steps to fix this issue?

See if the WD Installer has an uninstall function... you really don't need it at all. -
After I had Best Buy restore my ipod to factory settings, went to itunes from computer to restore my music. Getting the error message " Ipod cannot be used because the apple mobile device service is not started". Ipod is connected to Wi-Fi, connecting to itunes o.k. on ipod

Got error message :"This this Ipod cannot be used because the required software is not installed. Run the Itunes installer to remove Itunes and install the 64-bit version" This is on a new macbook. I already have the latest version installed and 64 bit. Help.

I got that message yesterday. I'm new at this so don't know if this is the correct solution but it worked for me. I reset my iPod by holding the 2 buttons down until the apple appears AND I restarted my computer. After that everything worked.

It sounds like you are getting this error message that your iPod cannot be read from or written to when you are trying to update your iPod Nano. I recommend the troubleshooting from the following article to help you get that resolved. Its pretty straight forward, just start at the top and work your way down as needed:

On my registered iTunes computer, the following message appears every time one plugs in a device and refuses to load said device to be synced: "This iPod cannot be used because the Apple Mobile Device service is not started". Each device has been registered onto this account and this computer, and all have worked finely in the past. I am so confused as to why now seemingly without reason, none of our apple devices (one iPod, two iPhones) are allowed to have music and other material downloaded onto them. Also, as a side note, they still are charged by plugging them into the computer, however they do not even show up on the left-hand sidebar in iTunes.

My itunes is no longer recognizing my new ipod when I plug it in . I am getting a message in itunes that says, " this ipod cannot be used because the apple mobile device is not started." I have tried the troubleshooting tips but not sure what to do next. My itunes is updated to 10 and ipod has not been connected to itunes since Oct. Should I update my ipod to 6.1.3? It is only at 6.0.1 I have not done this yet. My itunes is saying version 10. My ipod is not backed up on icloud so i do not know what I should do. How do I get itunes 11 to sync my ipod nano? Itunes error message says ipod cannot be synched.
My ipod is recognized in Windows but itunes won't synch thwe ipod nano. An error message says "The ipod "name of my ipod" cannot be synched. The required folder cannot found. The first time I downloaded itunes 11 it didn't install but it completely uninstalled the previous itunes. I've reinstalled and removed itunes 11 several times but nothing changes. Waht do I do?
