IPod Cannot Restore or Be Recognized

Having lots of issues with my iPod. Normally, once in awhile my ipod will get an error when putting music or videos on it, which causes errors when I plug it into the computer that it prompts me to fix by scanning for errors - but the iPod will work with whatever was currently on it. After awhile, I want to put more music on it, so I restore it and put it all back on again. This time that didn't work.
I don't know what or how it happened, but it just crapped itself. I tried troubleshooting normally, but when I went to update to the newest version of Itunes, I get more errors towards the end of installation which says "Service 'Apple Mobile Device' (Apple Mobile Device) failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privilages to start system services." When I tried to manually start the service through the "Service" folder, I get the error: "Windows could not start the Apple Mobile Device service on Local Computer. Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion." Installation fails whether I chose to "retry" or "ignore" the Apple Mobile Device error.
I had to do a system restore, because after the failed installation of iTunes, i got error messages about a missing .dll file. Now my computer wouldn't recognize
the Ipod in the reverted iTunes, so I formatted the iPod through windows. Now, I get the following issues:
When I plug my iPod into the computer, ITunes will come up and immediately tell me "iPod Recovery Mode".
There is no option to restore iPod, just a summary tab showing my capacity (which is said to be zero KB) and software version (1.1.2)
If I click the "done" button, where my iPod's name usually is, it says " You need to turn on synchronization in iSync preferences before you can sync contacts and calendars".
When I go to My Computer, it's listed as Removable Disk (I:)
If anyone could help, I'd be most appreciative. I rely a lot on my iPod to help me relax at night or I get tons of anxiety and cannot sleep.

  • IPod cannot restore to iTunes. Any help?

I was trying to update my iPod to iOS 7, beta 1, and it didn't work. Now, my iPod won't restore to iTunes. I have gotten errors 1603, and 21. Please help. I am so upset right now.

    Error 1604
This error is often related to USB timing. Try changing USB ports, using a different dock connector to USB cable, and other available USB troubleshooting steps (troubleshooting USB connections. If you are using a dock, bypass it and connect directly to the white Apple USB dock connector cable. If the issue persists on a known-good computer, the device may need service.
If the issue is not resolved by USB isolation troubleshooting, and another computer is not available, try these steps to resolve the issue:
Connect the device to iTunes, confirm that the device is in Recovery Mode. If it's not in Recovery Mode, put it into Recovery Mode.
Restore and wait for the error.
    When prompted, click OK.
Close and reopen iTunes while the device remains connected.
The device should now be recognized in Recovery Mode again.
    Try to restore again.
If the steps above do not resolve the issue, try restoring using a known-good USB cable, computer, and network connection.
    Error 1600, 1601, 1602
    Error 1603
Follow the steps listed above for Error 1604. Also, discard the .ipsw file, open iTunes and attempt to download the update again. See the steps under Advanced Steps > Rename, move, or delete the iOS software file (.ipsw) below for file locations. If you do not want to remove the IPSW in the original user, try restoring in a new administrator user. If the issue remains, Eliminate third-party security software conflicts.
    Error 20, 21, 23, 26, 28, 29, 34, 36, 37, 40
These errors typically occur when security software interferes with the restore and update process. FollowTroubleshooting security software issues to resolve this issue. In rare cases, these errors may be a hardware issue. If the errors persist on another computer, the device may need service.
Also, check your hosts file to verify that it's not blocking iTunes from communicating with the update server. See iTunes: Advanced iTunes Store troubleshooting—follow steps under the heading Blocked by configuration (Mac OS X / Windows) > Rebuild network information > Mac OS X > The hosts file may also be blocking the iTunes Store. If you have software used to perform unauthorized modifications to the iOS device, uninstall this software prior to editing the hosts file to prevent that software from automatically modifying the hosts file again on restart.

  • Ipod cannot restore"because files are being used by another application"

    Hello all,
I hope someone can help me. I think I mad a big mistake. I did a favor for my father who bought the newest IPod clip on shuffle for my mom. I agreed to get it up and running using my laptop, (which has Itunes for my Ipod w/video) would this create a conflict. Unfortunately I didn't think of asking BEFORE i tried to get the shuffle up and running. The shuffle works fine now but my 30GB Ipod is not able to sync any songs and has requested me to restore to the default settings. Which I tried but when I do it states that I can't because "files are being used by another application" So I tried to use the chat help on this website and when I logged in it picked my product type as a SHUFFLE. Can someone give me any advice. Thanks

I get this messager and I have no other ipods or dev. to my system and have problems when I disconnect also?? Even have done a complete restore, to no help. Help

  • TS1814 ipod classic, the dying breed, cannot restore

I have an ipod classic that cannot restore in itunes. Every time i hit restore it says "the ipod software update server cannot be contacted". I assume my connection is ok as i can still access the itunes store.

I assume you have tried everything here?
    iPod: Cannot restore or update in iTunes with error 1415, 1417, 1418, 1428, 1429, 1430, 1436, or 1439
It could be an indication or a damaged or dying hard drive.  I would recommend doing a disk diagnostic on the iPod's HD using the instructions given by turingtest2 in this older thread.  He also covers what the resulting numbers indicate.

  • My ipod cant restore itself because it says an error happened?

My ipod cannot restore because it says an error happened?

    Hey there mckenzie,
It sounds like you are unable to restore your iPod Touch due to an error message. You should start with the following article to help get that going, named:
Resolve iOS update and restore errors in iTunes
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1275
If you are getting a specific error number, use this article next:
Resolve iOS update and restore errors

If these articles do not resolve the issue, can you tell me word for word what the error says?
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the very best,

  • My ipod cannot be recognized by my computer

My 4G nano works perfectly fine when playing music.
but when I connect it to my computer.
The changing icon is shown, but it doesn't pop out in iTune. I enabled it disk use, but now I cannot find the drive.
Seems it is connected (it's charging), but my computer doesn't recognize it.
I tried it both on windows and mac, and it is the same.
The day before I stopped iTune when iPod is synchronizing. I believe that causes the problem.
I reset my nano. But problem is still there.
and because my computer cannot recognize it, I cannot restore it.
What can I do with it?
    Thanks!

See if any of these articles help.
USB drivers are not installed properly or are out of date.
iTunes 7 doesn't recognize the iPod.
    Your Windows PC doesn't recognize iPod</font color</a>.
iPod appears in Windows Explorer but does not appear in iTunes.
iPod does not appear in iTunes.
Fast user switching in Windows XP is not supported.
Windows confuses iPod with network drive
Although if you can't get it recognized on a Mac either, that would suggest an iPod issue that may need service. Or a visit to an Apple store if one is nearby.

  • Ipod cannot be restored, disk write error?

I cannot restore this ipod, nor can i reformat it using any program, application, or even the command line. iTunes gives me the error "unknown error - 1418", and ipod updater gives me "Disk Write Error" when i try to restore it. Does anyone know if there is any way to salvage this iPod? or should i be returning it to Costco?
this all started i think when the owner ran the batteries completely down. the ipod still gives the "connect to computer use itunes to restore screen".
this ipod was purchased in june 2006, and is in perfect condition.

See if doing a Restore on a Mac computer works
. Windows users having trouble with their iPods should locate a Mac user. In many cases when an iPod won't show up on a PC that it will show up on the Mac. Then it can be restored. When the PC user returns to his computer the iPod will be recognized by the PC, reformatted for the PC, and usable again. By the way, it works in reverse too. A Mac user often can get his iPod back by connecting it to a PC and restoring it.
    Tips
    a. It does not matter whether the format is completed or not, the key is to erase (or partly) the corrupted firmware files on the Hard Drive of the iPod. After that, when the iPod re-connected with a computer, it will be recognized as an fresh external hard drive, it will show up on the iTunes 7.
    b. It is not a difficult issue for a Mac user to find a window base computer, for a PC user, if they can’t find any Mac user, they can go to a nearest Apple Shop for a favor.
    c. You may need to switch around the PC and Mac, try to do several attempts between “Format” and “Restore”

Tried to restore my ipod classic on a windows computer... there was some sort of failure and it is now stuck in "disk mode."  The ipod is no longer being recognized by itunes.

  • Cannot restore ipod and other issues.

If someone can solve my ipod issues, you will totally make my birthday. Here's the deal. Sometimes when I connect my Ipod to my computer, it sees it as a just a removable disk drive. When that happens, Itunes tells me that my ipod is corrupt. When it tells me I should restore, it then tells me error 1418. I followed the steps on the post on here about that error code and it doesn't work. However, sometimes my computer recognizes my ipod, a message will pop up from memory card manager saying failed ot locate supported file types or there are no photos found on this device. Then my ipod will sync in itunes and start copying files. It says it's copying (which in actuality it's not copying anything or i might get a song or two to copy to my ipod) but then it stops and a message pops up saying, The ipod "Mike's ipod" cannot be synced. The required file cannot be found. I just don't know what to even try anymore. I've looked at so many posts and still nothing works. Please if anyone can help me I'd appreciate it so much!!!

    Hi,
Ok, there seems to be a problem... I've now been running Disk First Aid Erase on my iPod for an hour and a half. So far the blue bar showing progress seems to be stuck on about 5mm in...
Btw... there's been 2 people w probs posting here (I couldn't find the link to make a new post and joined this as it had similar probs)- the original guy has sorted his problem. Mine revolves around an iPod that showed up corrupted when I plugged into my Mac after not using the iPod for a couple of months.
iTunes can't restore it - error sign... As it also now shows up unrecognizable when I plug it into my Mac but with a "you can intialize" possibility I'm trying that as suggested. That takes me to Disk First Aid where pod erase seems to be stuck....
Hope somebody out there can help... thanks!
