Ipod capacity question???

I have a 2GB nano but when I go to settings, then about, my capacity is only 1.8GB. Is this how all the ipods are?
Dell   Windows XP

The hard disk drive industry measures disk capacity as 1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes. The Mac OS Finder measures disk capacity as 1 MB = 1,048,576 bytes (1024×1024). So, a disk with a storage capacity of 5,000,000 bytes is a 5.0 GB disk according to industry standards (5,000,000 divided by 1,000,000), but is a 4.77 GB disk according to the Mac OS Finder (5,000,000 divided by 1,048,576).
This means that the way size is caluculated on the computer or operating system on the iPod is different from the way size is calculated by hard disk manufacturers. The difference causes you to see 1.8GB on a 2GB nano.
In terms of your nano:
2GB=2,000,000 MB
Hard disk manufacturers:
THey say there are 1,000,000 bytes/MB in an MB/GB
2,000,000 divided by 1,000,000 = 2GB
Computers:
They say there are 1,048,576 bytes/MB in an MB/GB
2,000,000 divided by 1,048,576=1.91BG
Actual storage space on your nano is 1.91GB. However, the Operating system, games etc take up the extra 0.1GB, leaving you with 1.8GB free space.
This is true for every iPod, computer, hard disk, storage device etc.
Hope this makes things a little clearer.
PS. The actual number of songs etc that you get onto your Nano should not be affected by this, provided they are encoded at 128kbps in AAC/MP3 format.

Most of the difference is taken up by the iOS itself.  The other is due to how GB are advertised and actually used.  See the Consumer confusion for the later.

You need to ask Apple to reset your security questions; ways of contacting them include clicking here and picking a method for your country, phoning AppleCare and asking for the Account Security team, and filling out and submitting this form.

  • Capacity Question -- How Do I Free Up More Space on my iPod Mini?

The capacity of my iPod Mini is 3.79, and the capacity bar shows 3.74 GB attributable to Audio, 40.6 MB to Other, and 3.7 MB Free Space. I want to add playlists to this iPod, but I'm told I don't have enough space. I deleted several playlists from the iPod, reconnected the iPod, and tried moving new playlists over, but it isn't reflecting the additional space; it still shows that I have 3.7 MB Free Space. If I deleted 5 albums, shouldn't I be able to move one new one onto the iPod? Is a "Restore" suggested? Please help! Thanks!

Yes, that's right. Deleting from a playlist will not free up space because it doesn't delete the actual songs. It just deletes the links to those songs.

  • Basic ipod-nano questions - help !

    Hi
i dont know what fifith generation ipod refers to....BUT
i want to get one of the new 8bg ipod nanos.
    3 basic questions:
    1. I'm really confused about the current relationship between ipods & encripted/ copy protected mp3's. I don't buy from itunes (yet) - i just want to use my current mp3 collection for now.
Can i just drag & drop these onto the ipod without any hassle ???
    2. How many songs/mp3s does 8gb actually hold in terms of time/numbers ?
    3. I'm on a three year old emac with OS X 3.9 - Is this an issue or can i just expect to connect up & get on with it. ( I'm fire-wire & only USB 1. on this machine.)
    thanks someone....
    d

A Fifth Generation iPod refers to the 30GB, 60GB or 80GB iPod with video.
    1. If your current MP3s were not purchased from some other online store and are not copy protected they'll work with your iPod
    2. Around 2000 depending on song length and file format. The advertised song capacity of iPod is based on 4 minute songs encoded in AAC (MP4)format at a bit rate of 128 kbps. Longer songs and songs encoded at a higher bitrate or in uncompressed formats take up more space. You'll get a similar number if you MP3 are that bit rate or lower, the figures are pretty approximate.
    3. You won't be able to use Firewire to update, only to charge. USB 1.1 will be signigicantly slower that USB 2 but if you can live with that should work ok.

  • What does 'Other' cover in IPOD Capacity?

As a family we have a few ipods of differing sizes and generations. All working fine apart from one thing.
When I check for capacity usage in itunes two of the ipods show quite a lot of memory taken up under the 'other' catagory. Does anyone know how I can reduce the amount of information stored under this area? One of the ipod nanos has almost half of it's current space used up by this catagory of data.

In a related question, is 20.3mb of info in my 'Other' considered a lot?
Also, below is a list of the files and their sub folders:
    Calendars (empty)
    Contacts (empty)
    iPod_Control (device(preferences/sysInfo)iTunes & Music)
    Notes (instructions)
BOOTEX (the results of a disc check of the iPod itself)
My question is other then the iTunes folders, can I delete any and/or all of these files and their related contents and if I do so, will my iPod still work correctly?
Probably a stupid question I know, but I really don't know much about the inner workings of the iPod and I also don't know which program to use to read any of the files listed.
Thanks for any information that you can give me related to these questions.
    Cheers!!

  • Follow-up iPod nano question?

    Hi All,
I have a 4G nano due in the mail and I have been preparing to use it with arch.  I had a previous basic question and got great answers.
My new question is related to its initial use.  I have read that many first use it with a Windows box so that iTunes converts the hfs file system to vfat.  A few others have indicted that they have enabled hfs support in the kernel and used the iPod out of the box.  Does anyone here have experience with the issue?  If keeping hfs is an option, which kernel modules are needed and are they available in the stock kernel?
    Thanks
    Kevin

I have used a few ipods with linux, but i used them with windows first because it only took about 5min. for me to name my ipod and all that through iTunes, so i would reccomend doing it that way and then sync your music using gtkPod in linux..

  • A Variety of iTunes 7 and ipod 5g questions...

I've recently purchase a new 5g 80gb iPod. (replacing my 60gb photo). I installed iTunes 7 with a fresh installation of windows xp. Copied all my music back on to my new iPod without to much trouble. but....
    Registering:
It asks me to register my iPod every time i plug it in. When i log into my apple id, it brings up my addy info. I live in Canada and changed it to the correct country, but it won't recognize my postal code. No matter how i put it (with a space, without a space, capital letter, lowercase). The error i get is at the top is "The postal code you entered is not valid for [?]" It's not a huge thing, just annoying. So i registered my iPod through the apple website, and it still asks me to register. I've clicked "Never Register" and it still asks me... Annoying.
Sound Check (in iTunes, not the headphone check one on the iPod):
If sound check is on, does it alter the audio files in your library in anyway or does it just adjust the volume within iTunes? If sound check is on, does it anyway affect how the audio plays on your iPod? (ie automatically adjusting the volume) If i installed iTunes 6 with sound check, formatted my computer (my documents and my music are on a separate harddrive) installed iTunes 7 with sound check off, will the audio files somehow still have sound check on? (this question is answered if sound check doesn't alter the audio files) I don't normalize my audio when it's ripped b/c most normalizing programs cause the quieter tracks to be unproportionate to the other tracks. (more obvious in live recording when the crowd noice jumps from track to track). Since i've started using my new iPod, i notice that some tracks seem to have been normalized somehow and causing those effects like the crowd noice jump.
    Gapless:
With iTunes 7, the option to whether tracks are part of a gapless album is now available. Does this mean there's true gapless support for the iPod? This is feature number 1 on my iPod wishlist (and many others) and my iPod "why the f**k have they not done this yet?" I've tried playing around with a bunch of albums and tracks, and sometimes it feels like gapless and other times not at all. Goddamnit apple, WHY will you not release proper full support for gapless?!
    Album Art:
If you set iTunes 7 to automatically download album art, does it embed the image in the music files like when you add them manually? I copied an album to my roomates computer which had iTunes apply the artwork, but on my roomates computer, it showed up in iTunes without the album art.
    Volume 60gb 5G vs 80gb 5G:
My roommate bought the 60gb video last winter, and i've done a comparison with the same song and headphones, has anyone else notice or if this is true, but my roommates max volume is louder then my 80gb video. We though it might have been apples attempt to extend the battery life. Also that and the max vol limiter in the iPod settings might have something to do with the lawsuit. (this is all speculation on our part)
Thank you for the time and patiences. I'm your typical newb so if you have some links, faqs, whatever to point me in the right direction.

i'll have a go at this one:
    Registering:
It asks me to register my iPod every time i plug it in.
with that symptom, it's worth checking on this possibility:
Windows confuses iPod with network drive or hard drive and may keep iPod from mounting or songs may seem to disappear

  • Some songs can't be loaded on 2nd gen ipod shuffle (question with answer)

I'm getting the following message when trying to load some songs on to my 2nd gen iPod shuffle:
"Some of the items in the iTunes library, including 'Allegro', were not copied to the iPod "iPod" because they cannot be played on this iPod." When I click on the details triangle I get "Allegro" was not copied because the audio format is not supported by the iPod "iPod".
This is happening for many songs that were previously loaded on this iPod. The songs were all loaded into iTunes from CDs. I have tried the iPod reset utility, deleting all songs and reloading, selecting a single song to sync, no luck.
When I do a "Get Info" on these songs they say they were encoded with either iTunes 6.0.5 or iTunes 7.0.2.
OK. Even before I was able to post the question, I found the answer. If I select the songs and from the "Advanced" menu select "Create AAC version", the AAC version can be copied to the iPod. Get Info shows the encoding has changed so AAC and iTunes 9.0.1.
Hope this helps someone else with a similar problem.
    david.

You can't "sync" that is automatically update an iPod from multiple libraries or computers. If you want to connect and use an iPod on more than one computer you need to change the update preference in the iPod Summary tab to "Manually manage music and videos" and click Apply.

  • A few iPod Touch questions

Hi. I just got my iPod Touch yesterday, and I love it.
I just have a few questions about music settings and a few things in video.
First, is there a way to look at the album flow so it goes by the order of album name instead of artist?
    And two questions about video
Why do some videos have a blue dot next to some of the artist names?
And last, this is about full length movies. I've ripped a movie to my iPod, and I was hoping that I could put in chapter stops, so I don't have to hassle with the entire movie on the one small location-bar (can't think of a better wording for it The slide bar for the position of the movie)
Now, I've tried two things. First, I put the entire movie as a whole onto my iTunes. Is there a way to add chapter stops into that?
I also tried ripping each chapter of the movie, and moving them to iTunes. I put them under the same album name in hopes that they'd be linked together as one movie, but instead the chapters are separate from each other.
    Can anyone help with these?
    Thanks

Congrats on the new ipod Bonk!
1.no there just i havent found a way myself to do that either. Its just by default to be organized by artist name rather than album name.
2.the blue dots signify new videos that you have synced to your ipod allowing you know which videos are new so that you can find that video easily over older videos you might have on it.
    3. on these forums your not allowed to discuss movies ripped from a dvd.But your new so I will just encourage you to check out this site for better info forums.ilounge.com adn search there.

  • Updating iPod Overwrite Question

It seems that when I can update "Pamela's iPod",with something new, it writes over what's already on the iPod, so I have to update everything from the beginning. Shouldn't you be able to update the iPod without erasing what's already there?
Also, is there a device that will play both .aa and mp3 files that is manufactured for Windows? I like the concept of the iPod, but it really is lousy to get it to work.
One more question. Do I really need Microsoft's Service 2 pack update?
    Thanks!

007: Thanks for replying. I'm having all sorts of problems getting music copied to Pamela's iPod. Audible books works just fine. The problem I spoke about above is that I can't seem to be able to add, for example, a song to my iPod without adding all the other stuff already on it again. If I don't add my entire Library along with the single song, everything on my iPod is gone except for the newly added song.
Also, some folks have said for me to drag and drop. This doesn't work either. Last night I thought that I copied to my iPod an entire album (I imported from the CD and then clicked from the file drop-down menu, Update) and when I went to play the album this morning, only the first song played.
If you could walk me through this process, I'd sure appreciate it. Love your movies--
    Thanks!

  • Song capacity question

I'm a bit unclear on song capacity. I'm pretty sure my ipod mini 4gb was promoted as holding 2000 songs. Now the 4gb models have a claimed 1000 song capapicty and you now need 8gb to hold 2000 songs. What's the real deal? Thanks.

Yeah, I'm sure Apple avoided that pitfall of Creative, which was an extremely good move on their part.
Simply put, get a nano, and you won't go back. Just remember to either:
    Buy a case, or
Use the slipcover very often, get to know it. It will be your best friend.
And you should get a white one too. The front doesn't seem to get as scratched as the black one does.

  • Capacity question regarding the 1.77 GB "Other" stuff on my Iphone

I am aware that the "Other" issue has been discussed many times, however as I searched those discussions I couldn't find an answer to my question.
I currently have 1.85 GB of free space. If I do a restore to fix the "Other" issue and keep exactly the same amount of apps, music, video, photos, etc as I currently have...will I have more free space after the restore than 1.85 GB?
Also I am playing an 3rd party app game that saves my progress...will I lose my data and have to start over from the beginning if I do a restore?
    Thanks!
    Message was edited by: toppito

More than likely you won't gain any storage capacity. If your "Other" is that large, some iTunes content is not labeled properly.
iTunes creates and maintains a backup for your iPhone which includes data such as most iPhone settings, email account settings, contact info, SMS messages, notes, recent calls, call favorites, 3rd party app settings and data created and stored by a 3rd party app, and photos available in your iPhone's Camera Roll.
Before restoring if you have any photos in your iPhone's Camera Roll, you should import these photos by your computer. After importing the photos from your iPhone's Camera Roll, sync your iPhone with iTunes immediately before restoring to update your iPhone's backup if needed.
When restoring, your iPhone will be erased followed by the current firmware version being re-installed. After the firmware is installed, you will be prompted to restore your iPhone from your iPhone's backup, which is the default selection.
This must be followed by a sync.

  • 30GB iPOD Capacity issue

I just recently purchased a 5G 30 GB. When I go to 'settings' and then to 'about' my capacity says 27.8 GB. Shouldn't the capacity be 30 GB? I'm wondering where the other 3 GB went.
    Any ideas?
    HP   Windows XP

This happens with all hard drives.
    Here's why;
"In iPod's About menu, the hard disk size is reported as slightly less than the technical specifications for the iPod. The same is true if you connect iPod to your computer in disk mode look at the info or properties window for the disk.
Why the difference? Most hard disk manufacturers measure disk size this way: 1 MB = 1 million bytes (1000 * 1000). A 4 GB disk, therefore, is one that holds 4 billion bytes. Computers, including Windows computers, Macintosh computers and iPod, measure disk size this way: 1 MB = 1 048 576 bytes (1024 * 1024). The difference in these two calculations is what causes the drive to appear as 3.7 GB on a computer, but actually be a 4 billion byte disk."
