IPod Causes Computer to Reboot

This happens on occasion, but it's starting to get to me...
My computer will sometimes reboot when I plug in my iPod...
I would like to point out a few things about my configuration. To make my computer faster, I disabled a lot of services in Windows XP using services.msc... I have assumed that most of these services are either safe to set on disabled/manual...
I don't know if this is related to the iPod rebooting issue... However, I've enabled the iPod service and removable storage... is there any other service the iPod depends on? or is this completely unrelated?

Since you have completely messed with your computer, you may want to wait for a verry experienced Discussions Member to help you, someone with over 3 bars...
Try being specific on what you have executed on services.msc, your iPod firmware version, and your iTunes firmware version (iPod should be at 1.1.1 for 5G iPod and 6.0.4 for iTunes).
I nominate bnoir, btabz or Masna to answer this a little better after you repost with specific information

  • Ipod causing PC to reboot

I have been having trouble with my 20G ipod causing my PC to restart. First noted something funny when I would start to play a song on the iPod and then the song would immediately cut out and the ipod would turn off. This has happened repeatedly despite battery not being drained. I have also noted that when I plugged my ipod into the USB on my PC that it caused the computer to reboot and caused a "serious error". Since first problems developed I have updated to iTunes 5.0 (although this too was difficult but eventually successful when I turned off antivirus software and removed old versions of iTunes). I have verified that the iPod firmware is up to date. Any ideas as to a cause for this and a fix? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Of note is that I have used the iPod on my 2 different computers at times .... can this cause a problem?

I have the same problem, when I connect my iPod to my pc it reboots (actually crashes). After the pc is rebooted the iPod can sync with iTunses. I can repair the problem temporarely but it keeps coming back:
    - solution 1: run chkdsk on the iPod hard drive letter from windows explorer, it finds and corrects an error and the problem dissappears for some days
    - solution 2: run the iPod Updater (2005-06-26), this completely formats the iPod harddrive I think, since afterwards it has to put al my music back on it, the problem dissappears for several weeks with this
I'm getting nuts about this problem, I don't think it is good for my pc to crash every time I connect my iPod. Didn't find any help on the support section of the apple site.

  • ITUNE causes computer to reboot

    Hi,
I've been having this problem after installing the last few revisions of iTUNE. Everything works except that whenever I put a new CD into the DVD Drive it causes the computer to reboot. Sometimes it's on the first insertion of CD but it can be the second or third or fourth... but it never goes pass 4 CD before it reboots... anyone else seeing this problem ? Every other piece of software that uses the DVD drive works fine no matter how many times I insert CD's into it to be read... this ONLY happens with iTUNE.

  • Connecting ipod causes computer to freeze

Hello, I'm not sure which ipod I have (a 20 gig purchased around Dec. 2004). I just got a new computer with Windows Vista because my old one (which my ipod was configured to) died. That computer had Windows XP. I installed the latest version of iTunes on the new computer and tried to connect my iPod to the new computer and it causes iTunes as well as my entire computer to freeze when the iPod is connected via USB. However, when I disconnect the iPod the computer unfreezes. I would like to synch my ipod with the new computer so I can add everything from the ipod onto the new computer. Does anyone know what's going on and how to fix it?

I am having a similar problem. My whole computer doesn't freeze just "my computer" and itunes. But both windows and itunes don't recognize my ipod. I restored my ipod using a mac (erasing all my songs) and re-restored it on my pc. (It did recognize my ipod once I had formatted it on a mac first and asked for a reformat to windows) But it would not sync once I had finished with the restore. Please help?

  • IPod causing computer to not work properly

I recently had a problem with my iPod where my album art was all weird looking. I plugged it into my computer and then turned over to another program. My computer froze and I have to hold down the power button to shut it off and restart it. when my computer booted back up, it was extremely slow, taking at least ten minutes longer to get to the desktop, when my icons and task bar had disappeared. I tried various remedies, and then unplugged my iPod in frustration. Success! My task bar went back to normal and I plugged my iPod back in. then my computer shuts down again giving me a blue screen of death type thing. Confused, I started it back up again and was greeted by the same very slow startup. I tried some more remedies, then once again unplugged my iPod, and my computer went back to normal. What has happened? I am scared to plug my iPod back in, I fear it will kill my computer. Help?

Disconnect all other USB devices, other than the iPod, mouse and keyboard, and disconnect from any network you might be on, and connect the iPod to a rear port on your computer if it is a desktop computer.

  • My ipod is stuck in reboot and I tried a force restart and im away from my computer. HELP!!

My ipod is stuck in reboot and I tried a force restart and it didnt work. I am away from my computer so no itunes.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

You need a computer with iTunes for most of the above. It is required.

  • 64 bits hosts on 32bits guest cause computer reboot (vbox)

    Hi,
I've enabled AMD-V technology on my bios, and cpu's infos shows that it's compatible with amd-V technology.

Is there anything similar to do in arch?
    Regards.

I see it's been a while and nobody responded.  Did you find the solution? On laptops, most have settings that will tell it what to do when the lid is closed.Options are often 'do nothing', 'hibernate', 'shut down', etc.You might look into that. I found this because I was searching to see how to connect to a pc with LogMeIn Rescue when the pc is listed as offline.  I found this happens when the pc is sleeping. Good luck,

  • IPod nano 3 gen rebooting

I have just recently installed the newest update for my iPod. I am now having problems if I select a different song from the one that is playing. It goes directly to the apple icon and then reboots it self. I also downloaded a new game. So I don't know what is causing it to reboot. Could someone please tell me what to do I am leaving tomorrow. I want to resolve this problem today.
    Thanks
One other thing it has also did it when I tried playing the game Mahjong that I downloaded on to my iPod after updating to 1.1.2.

Try placing the iPod in Disk Mode and connecting it to your PC.  This should keep the iPod from rebooting and mount the iPod as an external volume on your Windows PC viewable from My Computer or Computer.  If you can successfully place the iPod into Disk Mode and have it recognized by iTunes, restore it to factory settings.
Putting iPod devices with a Click Wheel into Disk Mode
If necessary, verify that your iPod has a Click Wheel.
Before placing the iPod into Disk Mode, verify that it is charged.
Toggle the Hold switch on and off (set it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
Press and hold the Menu and Select buttons for at least six seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
When the Apple logo appears, release the Menu and Select buttons and immediately press and hold the Select and the Play/Pause buttons until the Disk Mode screen appears.
Connect the iPod to your computer; the screen on the iPod will should say "Do not disconnect".
If you are having difficulty putting your iPod into Disk Mode, set it on a flat surface. Make sure that the finger pressing the Select button is not touching the Click Wheel. Also make sure that you are pressing the Play/Pause button toward the outside of the Click Wheel and not near the center. If you are still unable to put your iPod into Disk Mode, use one finger from one hand to press the Select button, and one finger from the other hand to press the Play/Pause button.
It wouldn't hurt to also try a different USB sync cable to rule out a faulty/damaged cable. Plug the iPod into a high powered USB 2.0 port as well.  The iPod may not be receiving enough output from the iPod to stay connected.  This means you should unplug all other USB devices as well minus your keyboard and mouse if it's a desktop.

  • HT1212 Hi, one of my daughters friends tried to access her ipod causing it to become disabled; i do not want her to lose all her photos, she accesses my itunes account which is on ICLOUD, will she lose all her data - can this be fixed?

Hi, one of my daughters friends tried to access her ipod causing it to become disabled; i do not want her to lose all her photos, she accesses my itunes account which is on ICLOUD, will she lose all her data - can this be fixed? I do not think it has been synced with a computer before.

    Disabled
If you previously synced to the computer then you may be able to recover use of the iPod without erasing the iPod by following the instructions here:
    Disabled Recovery-must use syncing computer.
Otherwise y will have to restore and thus erase the iPod
    You can restore from backup
    If not in backup then:
    - If you used PhotoStream then try getting them from your PhotoStream. See that topic of:

    - Maybe from the restored iPod via How to perform iPad recovery for photos, videos

If recovery mode does not work try DFU mode.

    For how to restore:
    iTunes: Restoring iOS software
    To restore from backup see:
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.
You can redownload most iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
If problem what happens or does not happen and when in the instructions? When you successfully get the iPod in recovery mode and connect to computer iTunes should say it found an iPod in recovery mode.
If you previously synced to the computer then you may be able to recover use of the iPod without erasing the iPod by following the instructions here:

    Thanks, Rense

I analyzed the errors with BlueScreenViewer and noticed that the driver ntoskrnl.exe causes the server to reboot. A normal chkdsk or sfc /scannow couldn't find anything.
Using chkdsk /r /f gave me the following log:
Correcting errors in the Volume Bitmap.
Windows has made corrections to the file system.
So I can't check if this solved the problem, but I hope it did.
