IPod causing iTunes freeze

Hi guys,
hope someone can help as this has had me flummoxed for a good few hours and nothing as of yet I have come across has helped me in fixing my iPod (5th Gen).
Basically when attempting to use iTunes (with my iPod connected), iTunes freezes and forces itself to shutdown, I have tried to remedy this by resetting the iPod (unable to enter diagnostic mode or disk mode), reinstalled iTunes, used a different computer to see if it was my computer and god knows what else to get it working again but as of yet no luck, without accessing iTunes I can't restore original factory settings to the iPod either (which is now the aim).
Any suggestions on what I can do or how to remedy the situation?
Thanks

Pretty much the same story here. I don't know if this is related to the latest version of iTunes, which I recently updated? Is there a bug?
When I connect the iPod (5th generation video), I get "Updating <ipod name>..." screen, and it hangs. IPod says to not disconnect. It never recovers.
I've tried:
-Removing and reinstalling iTunes
-Checking off the setting to NOT automatically synch ipods and iphones
-Turning off my anti-virus
-Reading through all the support articles, which suggest to reset the iPod to factory settings...
The kicker is that I can't do a factory reset of the iPod or update the firmware without connecting to iTunes, of course.
I guess it's hopeless. Time to throw the iPod out??? Seriously, what to do?

I just purchased a 120gb iPod classic 6th generation from a friend. I have the latest iTunes installed and the software on the iPod is also current. My problem is whenever I'm syncing the iPod and iTunes freezes between the 250- 300th song... I have to manually reset the iPod for the iTunes to run correctly, but then my music isn't added and iTunes tells me I have to restore the iPod... I've done this numerous times only to no avail... Someone please help!!!

Here is what worked for me:
My usb hub, being usb2, was too fast. I moved the wire to a usb port directory on my pc. That is a usb1 port which is slow enough to run your snyc.

  • IPod Corrupt; iTunes freezing

    Hey guys,
I've found myself in quite a pickle! My favorite Apple device and one of my closest companions in life, my iPod Classic, has been corrupted. I can't say I'm entirely sure what did it; but what I do know is that it is, indeed, corrupted.
Now, this normally wouldn't be too big an issue, but this particular situation has me quite puzzled! When iTunes is installed, plugging my iPod into my computer causes both the program and the device to freeze. I can't even browse the iPod's files through Windows Explorer.
The only way out of the freeze is to reboot my computer or physically unplug the iPod. Doing the latter results in iTunes unfreezing and letting me know the iPod is corrupted. From there, I normally would be able to do a restore, but of course I've now removed the iPod!
I uninstalled iTunes so that I'd be able to access the files, and copied all of my music off of my iPod to my computer (unfortunately, I no longer have the music on my computer! It's all on my iPod!), so I'm okay with restoring the thing to factory settings. But that seems to be a difficult thing to accomplish, given the whole freezing ordeal.
My Plan B was to copy the file that I suspect is corrupt -- iTunesDB -- to my computer. I was then going to delete the one on the iPod and hope iTunes was programmed to generate a new default file in the absence of one. If it didn't work, I'd be able to just copy the one on my computer back to the iPod, and things would be back to normal.
However, this, too, seems impossible! I'm unable to copy it, for it freezes halfway through the transfer.
Do any of you guys have suggestions on how I may get this iPod working again? In worst-case scenario, I could take it to the local Apple store, but I'd need to wait a week or two for my friend's car to get fixed. It'd be preferable to be able to recover it here!
    Thanks a million,
    James

I thought I'd post a solution to this that I thought of after a few days of thinking, just in case this happens to someone else.
The solution involves taking advantage of even more bad programming in iTunes to get it to restore the iPod. This solution will work for you if:
-Your iPod freezes iTunes when you plug it in
-iTunes will unfreeze if you unplug your iPod and let you know that your iPod is messed up.
    Here's the solution:
    1) Plug your iPod in. iTunes will freeze.
    2) Unplug your iPod. iTunes will unfreeze and tell you your iPod is broken. Click "Okay" on this popup, then QUICKLY press "Restore iPod."
iTunes will fail to remove your iPod as being listed, and start the restore process. The first step is downloading the original factory settings from the internet, so wait for this to download. The next step is placing these files on your iPod.
    3) As you'd expect you'll get another error when it's time for iTunes to put the files on your iPod. It can't find the thing since you unplugged it!
    The next step is time-critical:
    4) Plug the iPod in, then click "Okay" on the popup. Continue pressing "Restore iPod" and hitting Okay if your iPod can't be found as quickly as possible. There's a small duration of time where your iTunes detects your iPod but doesn't freeze yet. If you get the timing right, you can have iTunes start restoring your iPod before it gets hung up on a corrupt settings file.
    5) Replace your music, and enjoy!

  • IPod and iTunes freezes while uploading music

So a couple of weeks ago, I was using my 40Gb iPod when suddenly it froze. I reset it but when I tried to play another song, it skipped all of them as if they weren't there. I had lost my entire library in an instant. Once I got back to my computer (Powerbook) I managed to restore it. During this the folder with the exclamation mark and the run-click-run-click problems showed up. Now after successfully restoring it, I can't get my music back on it. For some reason at various points in uploading songs (whether it be after 20 songs or 2000) both my iTunes and iPod freezes. I normally reset it which causes the "improper device removal" sign to come up. Then when I plug it back into my computer I get the message that iTunes can't recognize the information on my iPod and that I need to restore it again. However sometimes it takes 3 or 4 times of it freezing during uploading to get that message. Either way, I can't get my library of music back onto my iPod without it freezing. I never see the folder with exclamation mark and the music that I do managed to get on there works perfectly fine.
Does anyone have a clue what is wrong with my iPod and is there anyway to fix it?

I tried the update with no success. Here's another update after actually trying to use my iPod:
When I have it just plugged into headphones or speakers half of the songs cut off in the middle, just a little bit off near the end. Some don't work at all. Plus my iPod is very slow while moving through the menus.
When I have it plugged into the Monster FM transmitter, I really can't get anything to work. It freezes on almost every song. The most I can get a song to play is about 16 seconds before it skips over to the next.
This seems just seems really messed up but it seems to be a software problem. Any ideas?

  • Every time I try to sync my iPod Touch, iTunes freezes?

Well, it's pretty self-explanatory. Every time I try to sync my iPod Touch (5th generation), iTunes freezes. It starts syncing for a few seconds, slows down, stops, then iTunes becomes unresponsive. If I don't force quit it, after a few minutes, iTunes is fine, but my device still hasn't synced. Any solutions/suggestions?

I am an original Ipod mini user.I have not had many previous problems. Now,I want to update my Ipod but I get into a very frustrating loop when I connect my Ipod to Itunes 7.0.29-latest version. My Ipod is recognized but the program freezes after a very short while.I have to go to Task Manager to unfreeze the software and I cannot get anything to load onto the Ipod. When I go to restore the Ipod,I get a message that it "cannot be restored because another application is running".This is frustrating because there is nothing else running.

  • Ipod and itunes freezes

Whenever I plug my Ipod into my computer everyting I click on in itunes is delayed, like when I click on "music" nothing happens until 2 seconds later. Also my ipod recently deleted everything and when I sync my music and videos back on and click on a song in itunes, itunes freezes and everything is deleted off of my ipod. I tried restoring my ipod several times and reinstalling itunes. I have also recently noticed a faint clicking noise in my ipod. I don't know what to do now. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I found that restoring the ipod and uninstalling and reinstalling iutnes made the ipod work fine again. It is no longer freezing and neither is itunes.

  • Itunes stores purchase causes itunes freezes

Despite having downloaded the latest version of Itunes (10.6), itunes freezes any time i try to buy a song.  the purchase does not complete and utines freezes until i reboot.

    Close your iTunes,
    Go to command Prompt -
(Win 7/Vista) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES, right mouse click "Command Prompt", choose "Run as Administrator".
    (Win XP SP2 & above) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/Command Prompt
In the "Command Prompt" screen, type in
    netsh winsock reset
    Hit "ENTER" key
    Restart your computer.
If you do get a prompt after restart windows to remap LSP, just click NO.
Now launch your iTunes and see if it is working now.
If you are still having these type of problems after trying the winsock reset, refer to this article to identify which software in your system is inserting LSP:

  • IPOD causing PC freeze!

I recently downloaded an itunes update 7.0.2.16. After the update, the program prompted the update of my IPOD nano (gen 1) which I went ahead and did. For some reason, all the songs got erased. I can live with that...but the problem is that whenever I plug in my nano, the iTunes program totally freezes. I can't even run the diagnostics since the nano won't let me do anything in itunes when its plugged in. I'm at a bit of a loss. Even when I try and look at "My computer" when my nano is plugged in...windows does not seem to recognize it there. I never had any problems before (had nano for 6 months). Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Go into iPod Diskmode, and using Window explorer check for files that is using up space, delete these files, all music files should be under iPod control folder.
Antivirus has a tendency to freeze Itunes sync Operation with Ipod Classic, causing a timeout, which corrupt your Ipod filesystem.
    My suggestion.
Connect your Ipod to the PC and run chkdsk, to fix any iPod diskerror.
Disconnect from Internet. (just to make sure no nasties creep into your system while you syncing.
    Stop the Antivirus program
Connect your Ipod to the PC
When Itunes Open up, Restore your iPod please, this is for iTunes to map correctly, to fix the corrupted filesystem.
When Restore complete, eject the iPod and reconnect again.
Sync your ipod, preferably manually Manage in small batches and disconnect after every batch, to check that all is well, since you got such a huge library.
When all sync is complete, and iPod disconnected start back your Antivirus and coonet back the Internet.
    Good Luck!

  • Conecting ipod causes ITunes to hang---Help please

I have an Ipod touch 2nd generation with latest ipod software and itunes 10,1,1,4 on windows xp service pack 3. When I connect the ipod to an usb port itunes loads automatically then hangs. The ipod is not shown in itunes. If I disconnect the ipod Itunes works immediately then hangs again if I recconnect. I've tried reinstalling itunes but this did not solve the problem. Any help will be appreciated
    Peter

It may not be the iPod that's causing the problem. I've had similar issues with two models of Epson printer and a Dell PC running both Vista & XP. I have one of the same printers on another machine (a different Dell model) which works fine! The symptoms I get mean that if I connect the printer, ANY external USB drive-like device fails. iPod, USB memory key, external USB hard drive etc. Windows still lists the device, and often shows one or more layers of folders however all the folders appear to be empty of files. Scary or what!?! Sometimes the printer can also prevent the PC booting up. I suspect that it takes a number of factors, hardware & software, to trigger the issue which means it's unlikely to get resolved since it's both hard to reproduce & determine exactly which subsystem is to blame. It's not ideal, but I just shut down the external drive when I want to print, then turn the printer off and the drive back on when I'm done.

  • IPod and iTunes freeze when I connect my 80gb iPod Classic

Ok so I've had the 80gb Classic since August 08 and I recently got a new PC (Installed drivers recently, good spec). When I connect my iPod it freezes, so does iTunes and so does My Computer. I've uninstalled and reinstalled, downloaded latest update, reset iPod, updated drivers.
When I disconnect it says it needs to be reformatted and sometimes it offers me this option when I connect without iTunes open, but then I press OK and it crashes. How can I reformat it easily?
Don't care about loosing files on my iPod.

I had an issue once where iTunes wouldn't see the iPod, and the iPod would act like its trying to connect but would never complete (On a Windows Based PC).
The only way I got around that issue with my 80GB Video iPod was to do a reset on the iPod (menu and center for a few seconds until it rebooted). After that the device was good and would sync fine.
However, if your device is saying otherwise like the format option then I'd be concerned... And I would recommend doing a restore first before a format... Try the reset, and connect.... If you are concerned once you get it syncronized then do the restore option through iTunes!

  • Transfering songs over on iPod with iTunes = Freeze

I recently got a new laptop with Windows Vista running on it. I downloaded iTunes to be able to transfer songs from my laptop to my iPod. Everything worked fine as it has done on my old laptop with XP until one day when I tried to delete songs from my iPod or disconnect my iPod from my iTunes it started to totally freeze and just "not answering". I tried to use my old laptop again to transfer songs and the same happened.
The half-transfered songs I have on my iPod isn't working. They are there, but nothing happens when I click play on them.
Does anyone have a similar problem?
My iPod is an iPod Color 20GB bought 2 years ago or something. Currently have around 3000 songs on it.

I accidently erased a lot of the songs on my I-pod (when trying to add a playlist, it was added and everything else erased). Upon attempting to transfer songs back, the sync froze (many times). Luckily I have a MacBook and was able to transfer my songs back to my IPod with that. The ITunes in the Mini has been updated, I tried using another port, I restarted the computer many times; it will start to sync then it will freeze, usually at the same place. What's up with that?

  • Latest iPod and iTunes freezes my XP

I just downloaded and installed iTunes 6. Seemed to go fine. Still sees all my music and playlists, but then it didn't see the iPod. Windows didn't see the iPod either. So I downloaded and installed the latest iPod software. It seemed to install to the point it asked for a re-boot. I re-booted and XP starts, I get the desktop. My TSR's start loaing. I get a New Hardware "USB root hub" found message, then it freezes. No mouse response. No keyboard response. ctl-alt-del does nothing.
I Power down, restart and the same thing.
I don't know what to do.
I can't even figure out how to contact Apple about this.

Hi CJS. Thanks for all your advice.
I find that when iTunes or Explorer/Disk Manager/Computer Manager/etc are trying to communicate with the iPod, the Safety Eject Hardware software will not over-ride and eject the iPod.
At this point, I do a shutdown and hope that Windows will shut things down in an orderly, non-destructive manner.
However, I HAVE found that if I just back away from the computer and wash dishes or something...then come back, that I find that changes or progress has been made. I DO recognize this, however, as a problem. But only with my 15GB iPod, not my 20GB Color or 30GB video iPods.
I have no concrete evidence of 15GB iPod hardware problems. This is a communication problem between iTunes and the iPod with the Windows interface. I'll put money on it.

  • IPod touch : iTunes freezing mid-synch

Suddenly iTunes is freezing whilst attempting to update Farmville app. to my IPod Touch 3. The consequence is every open function on my PC is frozen, nothing, including iTunes can be closed, iTunes is reporting a 408+ hour synch time, and I must force shutdown the computer.

Try theis.  Although the link is for Win7 and Vista, it incldes a link for XP.

If that doe not work you might want to consider deleting the Farmville App from either of both the computer and iPod.
