IPod charge/sync port not working

The charging/syncing port on my 1st gen iPod touch has begun to not work properly the last few days. It recognizes it is plugged in on and off, like a cable with a short in it. It is not the charging cable, I have used multiple cables both to the computer I'm on and the wall outlet adapter.
Is there any idea what may be wrong? I'm afraid to try and sync to iTunes anymore because of the possibility of corrupting data.

Did you check the docking port if there's any debris inside, keeping it from getting proper contact?

About three days ago I went to go on to youtube on my itouch, and I had to wiggle the earphones around to get the sound to work. I don't know if this means I will have to replace it, also my itouch is out of warranty so what will it cost if I do replace the port.

It appears that your iPod encountered an error and you have to restore via iTunes. That is how it works.

To restore from backup see:
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.

Did you try a hard reset with the iPod still connected to your PC? Have you tried multiple USB ports, preferably high powered USB 2.0 ports?
To do a hard reset, first make sure the hold switch is in the Off position, then press and hold both the Select (Center) and Menu buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.
Have you also worked through each and every single troubleshooting suggestion in this Apple support document?

Do a Hard Reset
After charging till full charge, at least 2 hours (preferably 4 hours)
Toggle the Hold switch, make sure you dont see the red mark when you do the next step
Reset the iPod -> Press Menu and Center button simultaneously for about 10 secs or till the Apple Logo comes ON
Then release the buttons
Select your preferred language.

If the sound is still the same, but ok, coming from the bottom Dock connector, then try cleaning the headport, using a jet of air or some electronic cleaner.

My Ipod touch apps are not working. They attempt to appear but it seems like something is stopping them. They show up for less than a second then dissappear. Also all of my synced music dissappeared as well. I'm not sure if that is something in common?? I've tried resetting my ipod. I never link it to a computer, and that is why I synced my music from a friend. Please help me!

Have you checked the 'Hold' button at the top left of your Classic to make sure it didn't get bumped into the ON position?
If it's been moved to the right and you can see the red indicator, then 'Hold' has been switched on and none of the buttons on the iPod will work.
What happens if you plug your iPod into a charger or connect it to iTunes?

My Ipod 4th generation is not working. I do not know what happened. I was on it and then the screen turned like a black that was glowing. I pressed the home button and then it still wasnt working so I let it sit. The Wi-Fi on my iPod Touch 4G is not working. People were working on my wi-fi, and, since it showed three bars still, I thought it was working. So when I found out it wasn't working, I tried to fix it by myself by forgetting the wi-fi network. Now, when I try to log in, it says that my password is incorrect (even though I know it is right). I think it is not working because I forgot the wi-fi network while they were working on it. I don't know what to do and I would like Wi-Fi to work on my iPod again (and it is working on my computers and my iPad). Can anyone help me? Thanks:)

Try the following to rule out a software problem:
- Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Power off and then back on the router
- Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
- iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
- Wi-Fi: Unable to connect to an 802.11n Wi-Fi network
- iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
- Restore from backup. See:

- Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.
