Ipod charging through Imac while sleeping

Is there a way to charge my Ipod through my Imac when the computer is sleeping? Everytime the computer goes to sleep, the ipod doesn't charge. Thanks!

No, that is the way USB ports work. You can either delay the sleep mode, turn it off, or buy a wall charger. I'd recommend the latter.

  • Only slow charging and none while sleeping

Hi! I have a 17" 1,67 MHz PB with a charging problem. The time to charge displayed in the menu bar can change from more than 10 hrs to several hundred. When the computer sleeps it doesn't charge at all, although the power adapter light is amber all the time.
I have noticed that the charging is depending on what I do on the computer. If I just leave the computer on, the charging goes to almost nothing less than 10 mA. When the screensaver starts the charging increases to more than 300 mA, but that is still very slow.
It seems like the fast charging is not working and only the trickle charge that should start at 80% works.
I have done all the usual stuff, reset PMU, tried different charger, new battery, but nothing have worked. I have run Tech Tool Pro, and no problem is reported. I don't have the Apple Hardware test CD, but what I have heard is that Tech Tool does the same tests or more, right or wrong?
As everything else works I can live with this problem, but if there is an easy fix I would be more than happy. Can the DC-in board be the problem or the logic board? Where is actually the circuits located that controls this stuff?
    Thanks, Leif
    PB 17"   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

How long did it take to charge the battery ?
About 40 hours to 92%, then it stopped, although the charger did not turn to green. But the charging icon switched to a power plug icon on the menu bar. To this time should be added the time the computer was sleeping and not charging at all, despite the amber light was on.
Fresh batteries require some cycles before they reach
their full capacity. So I would consider this as
    normal.
You may keep an eye about this and - if nothing
changes - ask the seller for a replacement (but you
should consider that +/- 5% are in an acceptable
    range).
    Ok.
Have you followed the instructions provided by Apple
to calibrate a new battery ? See
    http://search.info.apple.com/?search=Go&lr=lang_en&kwo
    rd=&type=&newstype=&q=calibrate%20battery
Yes, I did this, but as I said, the battery only went to 92% so the calibration was not fully completed.
I recorded the charging with MiniBattery Logger and you can see the graph here: http://www.lignell.net/charging.png
The red line is the amperage and the amber is current charge level. The steep parts of the curve is when the screen saver starts. The dotted line is when sleeping. The amber charging icons means the charging starts after a stop. At the end the charging starts and stops all the time. The big red negative spike at the end is when running on battery only. Green line means it is "fully" charged (92%).
I hope this clarifies my question a bit. I think a normal charging should take a few hours only, without interruptions. The charging current never goes above 400 mA, and it should be more than 1000 mA.

  • IPod charging "problem" via iMac G5 compared to Mains.

When I charged my iPod Photo via the USB socket on the back of my iMac G5, I only got around 4 hours playback. When I charged the same iPod with the same cable, but using the plug adaptor for the wall electricity outlet, I got 12 hours roughly.
Is there anything I should be concerned about, especially with regard to the power coming from the iMac? Is this a power supply issue? My iMac is performing as normal, but this odd iPod behaviour is somewhat worrying.
    Thanks.

As discovered by other users of various Mac models, some few will charge while the machine is in Sleep mode. It seems most others actually
    b Drain
the iPod if it is left connected while the Mac is in Sleep mode.
It is a bit of irregular behavior, because some do, some don't and no consistency I have seen (and as reported in this thread by individual who found different results with changed power supply unit.).
From the iPod FAQ, it seems they suggest that sleep charging seems to be more likely to work with FireWire... <http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60920>:
    b Question:
Can iPod charge while my computer is asleep?
b Answer: Yes, in some cases.
If you connect the iPod to your computer by FireWire, and your computer is sleeping and also connected to AC power, in most cases the iPod will charge. If the iPod does not charge when connected this way, either wake the computer or connect the iPod directly to an AC power adapter.
And that article is contradicted by this one <http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60941>:
b Your computer goes to sleep
Your computer can only charge iPod when it's turned on and not asleep. Make sure your computer on and is not set to go to sleep when you want to charge iPod.
Tip: Some Macintosh computers can charge iPod mini even though they're asleep. If your sleeping computer doesn't charge iPod mini, don't worry, just wake it and let iPod mini charge.
This document <http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60971> has a good summary of the connection capabilities of the various iPods.
So it seems we each need to do an experiment to see if our configuration works : take low charge iPod, attach to Mac, let go into sleep mode, and see how much play time is available after long sleep attached, versus the Mac awake or powered adapter charge results.
(my latest configuration I have not tested: new iMac G5 RevB w iPod mini 6GB - I've been charging either via USB and computer on/awake, or by powered USB hub, or wall adapter charging - I have not tried sleep mode charging (or draining as case may be... ;^)

  • USB charge while sleeping

    Hey,
I notice in an add from Toshiba that their notebooks can now charge cell phones while the notebook is in sleep mode, and possibly even while turned off.  Would there be any way for a DV6-2064ca to be able to do something similar?  I sync my smartphone to my notebook while I'm home, but until I can figure out how to shut off the lid light, I'm putting the notebook into sleep mode over night and it doesn't charge my phone.\
If it will be in a future BIOS update, that'd be cool, I can wait...
    Len

My old Acer AspireOne running XP will charge devices in standby mode on battery power, but not my new HP Mini for some reason in sleep mode on battery power.
If I connect the Mini to the wall AC adapter and then put it into sleep it will charge the usb connected devices, but not if I put it to sleep while only on batter power. Here's the kicker. If I unplug the AC wall adapter after putting the computer to sleep; it will still charge my devices. This shows there isn't anything wrong with the hardware to make it unable to charge in standby there just isn't any setting to do so.
I've clicked on the only two setting I can to make it send power while on battery sleep, but it refuses to send power to the usb on battery. Disabling the computers ability to turn off the usb to save power in the power settings and in the device manager to not allow it there either but nothing works.
I'm SERIOUSLY considering taking this thing back on this soul issue since I only bought it a few days ago. I ride my bicycle to different states, and it is very important that I can charge my iPod to have my maps with me so I don't get lost.

if the iPod is not charging, I think the problem may lie in the cable itself. Get a new cable.

If it is jailbroken, we are not allowed to help you with that here.  You'll need to seek out other sources of help.  The jailbreaking could potentially be part of the problem, for all I know.

  • Ipod froze on "Charged" screen while playing in Bose speaker ipod charger

My ipod was playing in a Bose speaker ipod charger dealy. i wanted to see what band was playing and it was displaying the charger screen. i took it off and trying holding down the select and menu button to restart it and it didn't work. I tried plugging it into my computer and its still not doing anything and it has the charged screen still on.

We had a similar problem. iPod stopped while plugged into the Bose and then indicated that it needed to be charged, but when plugged into computer, was not recognized. A reset solved the problem. Are there issues with playing with the Bose system?

  • IPod Nano 6th charging icon disappears while still plugged in

My iPod's charging icon disappears while it's still plugged in to my PC, as soon as I "eject" the iPod from Windows. So, to be as clear as I can (sorry for the repitition if you got it the first time - I just like to be sure): even though I have selected (either from iTunes or just via Windows itself) to "eject" a.k.a. "safely remove" my iPod from my computer, it is still plugged in to the USB port. The "Connected" screen is replaced with the menu, which is normal, but what I'm asking about is this: the battery icon in the top-right corner appears as though I have unplugged the device completely; the "charging/fully charged" indicator that I usually see when it's physically connected is missing.
So, my question is, is this normal? Could it be a bug in the iPod, or perhaps a bug in Windows 7? More impiortantly (to me), does the absence of a charging indicator mean that the iPod is actually no longer charging, even though it's still plugged into a powered USB port it was charging from only a minute before? I know my iPod never used to do this...

    hi thanks for the reply.
yeah i noticed that although it shows 'charged', it restores a tiny bit of residual charge to the battery, maybe 5-10% after being plugged in for 3+ hours. mine happens always however.
i've sent it back to apple and am awaiting a replacement (6-7 working days apparently) under warranty. hopefully the new one wont have this problem.
    cheers,

  • IMac power draw while sleeping?

My macbook used to draw 1-2 watts while asleep. My iMac us drawing 11-17. This seems a bit high. Even an older PC desktop I had would only draw 3-4 (dual core, beefy vid card, multiple HDD's, etc).
I'm wondering what others experience when their iMac is sleeping. Even though mine is a 24", I'd be happy to hear from anyone with an alu iMac. I'd also like to hear any suggestions for things to look at as possible energy draws while sleeping.
    Thanks

    Very strange.
If you go to this page: http://www.apple.com/environment/resources/specs.html
and then click on Environmental attributes listing you will see that specified power draw whilst asleep is approximately 2.4 watts.
If you have MEASURED the power draw at 11-17 watts during sleep mode, I would take it into your local Apple Store.

  • IPod Touch 2nd generation not being recognized / charging through iTunes

I am having issues with my 2nd gen iPod Touch being recognized in iTunes or Windows.  I have tried multiple computers with no luck (Windows XP and 7).
Here is what is going on.
iPod is not recognized through computer or iTunes
iPod doesn't charge through computer or a wall charger, however, will charge through a seperate speaker dock. (this seems odd that it will charge on a dock, but not through the wall charger or computer).
Each time the iPod is plugged into the computer with Windows XP, I get a message that the USB device is not recognized.  I get no message when plugged into Windows 7.
Here are the steps I tried to fix the issue.
used multiple cables, 3 in all.  My iPhone 3gs works fine and is recognzied with all cables / computers.
reset the device numerous times and re-started computers.
Uninstalled iTunes and reinstalled with no luck.
I'm reaching out into the community to see if anyone has had similiar issues and looking for advice to solving this problem.
Thanks for your help and responses.

Slightly different contact configuratio in the dock might allow charging nly on the dock.
If you can't straight out the contacts:
Apple will exchange your iPod for a refurbished one for this price. They do not fix yours. However, it may not be worth it for the old 2G iPod.

I'm very far from being expert at reading crash reports, but I don't think this is a kernel panic. I'm not seeing any signs of a KP in the logs. The following is basically some guesswork on my part and I might be completely wrong, but it may be worth thinking about.
In your crash report I'm seeing the process which seems to be responsible for the crash is BroadJump/Client Foundation/CFD
    Process: CFD 196
    Path: /Users/judybarnett/Library/Application Support/BroadJump/Client Foundation/CFD
    Identifier: CFD
    Version: ??? (34766848)
    Code Type: PPC (Translated)
Here is what I've found from searching BroadJump/Client Foundation/CFD.
+5. BROADJUMP CLIENT FOUNDATION: During your use or installation of+
+the overall Licensed Software, the BroadJump Client Foundation+
+("CFD.exe") may be installed on your computer. The BroadJump Client+
+Foundation is a small application that facilitates communications+
+between the client software on your computer and your IAP's servers+
+that manage these applications. The BroadJump Client Foundation+
+periodically queries BroadJump or your IAP's servers for one or more+
+of the following reasons (a) to upload the subscriber registration+
+information that is collected at installation, or (b) to check for+
+available updates to your broadband access and support software or+
+messages from your IAP, or (c) for authentication to your IAP's servers for certain application communications.+
This is apparently some kind of software installed -- or which was possibly installed at some time in the past -- by your ISP (or possibly a former ISP.)
    Path: /Users/judybarnett/Library/Application Support/BroadJump/Client Foundation/CFD
    Exception Type: EXCBADACCESS (SIGBUS)
    Exception Codes: KERNPROTECTIONFAILURE at 0x0000000000000000
The above means this is caused by "the thread trying to write to read only memory," and is always caused by an attempt to access some data. I'm also seeing that it was running under Rosetta, which is a translator for PPC Applications so they can be run under Intel, which is what your computer is now. My hypothesis, then, is that BroadJump/Client Foundation/CFD might be something you migrated from another PPC Mac when you got your current one, and it, or running it under Rosetta, may be making things unstable. You said this has been happening off and on since you got the new Mac. So, the question is did you use Migration Assistant to move things over from another computer and was that a PPC Mac? If not, that probably blows my theory completely out of the water. However, I would still want to understand what BroadJump is doing on your computer and why it is running under Rosetta.
If yes, my first instinct would be to uninstall BroadJump. But first, I would contact your ISP and ask them if it is a necessary part of the functioning of your Internet service. If so, there may be an Intel version they can supply or they can recommend a proper course of action.
