Ipod classic 120 stuck in disk mode, not recognized by windows or itunes

so ive been havin tons of problems with my new ipod 120 classic
first one day when i plugged it in it told me it was corrupted and needed to be restored
then it would not restore
i formated it with windows but that didnt seem to do anything
the other night somehow i got it to the point of naming my ipod but after that, it stopped working again
for a while i couldnt even put it into disk mode
now, when it is plugged into the computer it is stuck in disk mode, yet not recognized by the computer or itunes
it makes the sound when i plug it in but never shows up
also, when its not plugged in, it starts up and just brings me to a screen that says use itunes to restore. but then i plug it in and it goes right to disk mode and do not connect, and isnt recognized
when i unplug it i can see it pop up on my computer for that one second i unplug it
ive tried this on a number of computers and it does the same thing
when i unplug it from being plugged into the computer it just sits in diskmode saying ok to connect
if i reset it by pressing center and menu, it just goes back to the use itunes to restore screen
i cant get it to enter diagnostic mode, and when i hit center and play after center and menu it does nothing either
ive just about had it with ipods
this is my 3rd or 4th classic that i have had problems with
apple should be ashamed of themselves for such a buggy product for so much money, and very very crappy service
any help greatly appreciated....but im prety sure ill be moving onto another product after this
luckily i am still under warranty so they offered for me to send it in....but then i am without music for about a week
i feel i should be compensated for that alone, aside from just fixing it for me
please help me fix this so i can get back to some tunes!
thanks for any info

1. Turn off iPad. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, slide to turn off.

3. Press and hold the Home button down and connect the docking end of cable to iPad
4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect To iTune" screen
5. Release the Home button
6. Open iTune (make sure you have the newest version of iTune)
7. You should see "iTunes has detected an iPad in recovery mode"

Hiya! My iPod Classic Is Stuck in disk mode, and I tried the hard reset and EVERYTHING, and it still doesn't work. When I connect it to my computer (Windows) It doesn't show up in iTunes, Or on the "My Computer" area. Any Help?

When you did a hard reset on your iPod, what do you see on the screen?

  • My iPod Classic is stuck in disk mode, won't charge on a wall mount, iTunes won't recognize it, and it got this way from me trying to restore it like it said. What do I do now?

So, I tried to restore my iPod to the factory settings via iTunes. It has been a few days now and its still stuck in disk mode telling me "Do Not Disconnect" and it only charges on my laptop. I tried hooking it up to a wall mount to charge and than it told me that I need to use iTunes to restore it. Here's the thing, it won't leave disk mode and its not registering on my iTunes. What can I do to get it back to normal,
Oh yeah, all of the latest updates for my software and iTunes are current.

  • Ipod classic 120gb stuck in disk mode

i have a ipod classic 120gb and im having issues with it. i am unable to get it out of disk mode, my computer and itunes will not recognize it. ive tried all the steps ive seen in the forums still no luck. ive tried other usb port and other computers with no luck. it is almost 4 yrs old so warranty and other options are expired. does anyone have any suggestions?

That's super odd. It could be an indication or a damaged or dying hard drive.  I would recommend doing a disk diagnostic on the iPod's HD using the instructions given by turingtest2 in this older thread.  He also covers what the resulting numbers indicate.

  • Ipod 5th Gen Video 80Gb disk mode not recognized on itunes

    Hi there everyone,
So i have my ipod 5th gen 80GB video and here's my problem.
Time ago i had it in a pocket of my backpack that was supposed to be waterproof. We got completely washed in NYC and when i took it out of my backpack pocket the ipod was dead or behaving in a weird way.
It didn't turn on then i let it dry. After weeks i've been trying to charge it but it seems it had battery problems so i bought a new one and replaced.
Now the ipod stays on but it keeps restarting showing me the sad face. Then it restarts beginning fgrom the apple logo and the same thing comes up.
I can put it in disk mode and also in the diagnostic mode thru the key combination.
I let it sit for 24 hours more or less to the wall charger and the battery seems to be completely full and the ipod stays on, still fiving me the same synthoms. Then i put it in disk mode while downloading the last version of itunes (9). When i plug it in, i hear the sound that windows makes when you plug something via usb. It installs the software and it sees it as an ipod device. But itunes WON'T.
This appens with every usb port that i have. I can put it in disk mode even plugged into the computer, i hear the windows sound like i just plugged something in but nothing.
When i reset the ipod, sometimes i see the screen that tells me to connect the ipod to itunes and procede to the restore.
Sometimes i see the big V and the "ok to disconnect". The if i plug it in with itunes open on my desktop i see the "do not disconnect" but nothing happens, it will not see it yet.
After 30 secs more or less, the ipod restarts again on its own showing me the sad face.
If i turn it off it tells me "very low battery" but i don't know if this last one statement its important or not.
I know already that all of my music and videos are gone. I just would like to get to the restore step then i'll start over again loading music and videos.
What kind of problem do you think it has? Is there another hardware component damaged that needs to be replaced?
Is there a solution for this kind of issue?
Of course i've been following ALL the apple instructions on the website, the 5 R's and so on but nothing worked.
I really hope that someone in here could give me an hint because at this point i really don't know where to crush my head
Thank you so much for your time!

I'm having the same exact problem. When I first started using Vista it was fine, but now all of the sudden it will do nothing with My iPod and it kind of angers me.

  • HT1320 iPod nano is stuck in Disk Mode.  How do I reset it?

iPod nano is stuck in Disk Mode and menu wheel is unresponsive.  How do I reset without losing data on iPod?

    Hello jarhead232.
To try and resolve this issue, please unplug the power from the unit for about 25-30 minutes.  Once this time frame has passed, plug the unit in directly to a wall outlet to see if the printer will power on.

  • 5th Gen Ipod not recognized by windows or itunes. Have tried it all. Any Ideas?

Hello everyone. I have a 5th generation Ipod I recently purchased that I'm having what seems to be an common issue. When I connect the ipod to my computer via USB, the Ipod is not recognized in windows or Itunes. Occasionally the Ipod will charge when connected but not always. Though this is the same for the old wire I used and the new one I purchased today. Even when shown charging the Ipod is not recognized and there is no noise that a device has been connected. I have tried the 4 R's (without Restore) which I can't do, chaninging the drive letter, disabling start up software, uninstalling and reinstalling all Apple Software. I have tried connecting to another computer and have gotten the same result. When I check the diagnostic screen on the ipod it shows that a usb cable is detected. I have upgraded all my driver software, disabled and reenabled them. I'm almost 3 hours from the nearest store so that it out of the question. I'm curious if anyone has any other ideas and will try anything you think might be the issue and fix. Thank you for time.

From my experience, the only way you're gonna get a PC afflicted with this disease to work with a 5th gen nano is to roll back to an earlier version of iTunes.  Those affected have been exhausted by this ongoing issue.  To update or not to update?  And I always say never update unless you have to, and turn off all that auto update mess!
I have two core2duo lappies running 32b vista.  My workflow dictates 32b fyi.  One is acer aspire running itunes v 11.1 (.0.126),  5th gen nano was originally formatted and works just fine on this machine to this day.  My other is the bigger badder lenovo thinkpad and the 5th gen will NOT mount using any version of itunes past 11.0 (.1.12)  Windows mounts it just fine.  itunes is not having it.  no shirt no shoes no service.
I have both a 4th and 5th gen nano.  The 4th gen works great on both machines, I even successfully tested it with the latest version (11.1.5) before subsequent deletion on the thinkpad!  Weird huh?  I think my next experiment might be to restore my 5th gen w/ a Mac and theeeeen plug it into PC itunez.
I'm at a loss on the thinkpad.  Scanned for intruders.  Cut the Lenovo bloat.  Executed system and reg maintenance.  Took down msconfig to a safe mode + itunes level to attempt to resolve possible sw conflicts but to no avail.  NO NO NO.  Every single dang port, every time on the thinkpad.  Has me feeling like others might get the same treatment by the next itunes update.  :|
    So in summary for me:
5th gen nano and thinkpad are a NoGo on 11.1^  last working version for me = 11.0.1
5th gen nano is working on an acer aspire 11.1.0  but no way in the world am I updating
4th gen nano is kicking 5th gen nano's @zz so what would make me want to buy a new ipod?

  • Replacement Shuffle Still Not Recognized In Windows Or iTunes

    Hello everyone,
I was having the orange/green light issue and my 512MB shuffle was not recognized in Windows or iTunes 7.0.1. I contacted Apple and they replaced my shuffle - after I attempted all documented fixes and running the Shuffle Reset Utility.
I plugged the replacement in and received the message "xxx iPod shuffle cannot be updated. The required disk cannot be found." I found an article on how to remove some temp and application files. I did that and also ran "checkdisk" on my laptop and that error went away. The problem is now the shuffle is not recognized in iTunes or Windows once again. The shuffle did come up for less than 10 seconds as the "F" drive and then disappeared and could not be relocated.
Here is the real rub for me - I plugged the shuffle into my wife's laptop running iTunes 7.0.1 and it works just fine!! Since my laptop is my primary - this is still a major issue for me.
Does anyone have a fix for this? This has to be a Windows disk or driver issue.
Does anyone have a fix for this type of issue? It is obviously a Windows disk or driver issue.

First of all, try another port on your computer. Some ports are not connected direct to the motherboard and do not recognize the iPod as well as those that are. Reset the iPod each time you connect it to another port.
Then try with the iPod in forced disk mode.

    Still no joy, see these.

  • Ipon not recognized in windows or itunes

my ipod is not recognized in windows or itunes, but i have a shuffle that is able to be recognized. when i connect my classic to the computer it starts charging but that is it. i know there is a 5r repair but i have yet to do it bc if i have to reinstall itunes i am worried about my music and whether or not i will have to re-add all my music again manually. i have several thousand songs that i have all the artwork for and all song info poosible and it would just take forever. any help would be great. thanks.

I had the same problem just after downloading latest version of itunes. 5 r's didnt work. Device was recognized on my daughters's computer. I also got windows error saying new hardware would not work properly. I eventually got advice to update the ipod driver by going through start menu and'Control panel' (with a right) click and finding "ipod" under device manager. Right click on that and select update. Once it was done my ipod was recognized by both itunes and computer. Now seems to be working fine and no loss of library/music. Hope this may be of some use

  • Device not recognized by Windows or iTunes - Blinking green light

When I try to connect my iPod shuffle to my computer (Windows XP), it's not recognized by Windows or iTunes. (i.e. device does not appear in Windows explorer or iTunes) While in the USB port, the Shuffle's green light blinks incessantly. My wife uses an iPod on this machine (under separate user name) and has no problems.
I've tried updating software (iTunes, iPod), restarting my computer and resetting the iPod to no avail. My machine is not on a network. The USB port(s) work fine as I can use my memory stick (no USB cable) with no problems. I've tried connecting my Shuffle under my user name as well as my wife's. Same problem.
Also, I had my Shuffle setup on an old computer (PC, Windows 2000) and it still works fine plugging into that. (I'm getting rid of it soon, hence why I'm discovering these new problems).
Please advise. Since my Shuffle is over a year old, I am not eligible for online chat or phone support without paying for an Apple Support agreement.
I know there's another thread with the same issue that was not resolved on the discussion board.
Thanks to anyone who can help.

Recently I used my ipod at work all night, just like normal. After work on the way home, like normal, I plugged it into my aux port on my car's head unit, and plugged it into power. 10 minutes later, in the middle of going over Ortgea Highway(hiway 74 between Orange and Riverside Counties), it just suddenly stopped working. When I plug it into any of my computers at home, nothing happens, it is not recognized or seen. When I plug it into power, it displays either a "sad ipod icon" or a battery with exclamation mark(!) icon. I have brand new power adapters both for the car and home, plus brand new usb cables, thinking that would help. It hasn't and now, since I opened those packages, I am out that $$ and ******. Since I received this unit as payment for electrical services rendered, I have no idea how old it is. Does anyone have any ideas? ([email protected])

  • My ipod classic is stuck in diagnostic mode and will not reset. Please help.

I turned on my iPod classic & it started in Diagnostic mode.  I worked my way through the various tests and press this/press that instructions and now it is stuck.
I can't turn it off or reset it.
I am unable to connect it to my PC at the moment and need help so that I can use it.
    I miss my music.

How did you try and reset the iPod?  By pressing and holding both the Select (Center) and Menu buttons togehter long enough for the Apple logo to appear?
What happens if you connect it to iTunes?
If nothing else, let the battery fully drain and then charge it up.
