IPod Classic 120GB freezes, won't add more songs

Hi Guys!
I was wondering if anyone can help me, I've been reading through some posts and it seems some people may have the same problem as me.
A friend of mine kept my iPod plugged in and was transferring all my music onto her Macbook pro, and I'm not sure what she did, but somehow it erased all my songs from the iPod. Since then every time I try to add songs, whether on iTunes or bypassing iTunes, it freezes just after adding a maximum of 300 songs, and only about 60 will be found on my iPod, or sometimes nothing at all, even when I safely remove the device.
I've even tried many attempts of restoring, reformatting, bypassing iTunes, all sorts of ways, trying a Windows format, Mac format. Nothing works. I am so upset, my iPod was full, and now that I'm traveling I don't have anything to listen to. I'm worried my iPod is permanently dead.
Can anyone diagnose my problem for me by any chance?
Thank  you so much.
Kershia

  • IPod Classic 120GB - iTunes Won't update my iPod software to version 2.1

I have a 120GB iPod classic with software version 2.0.1 bought in 2009.
I want to upgrade the software to version 2.1 so I can have the voice memo feature on my iPod.
I am running iTunes version 10.0.1
When I ask iTunes to check for a software update for my ipod it says, "This version of the iPod software (2.0.1) is the current version."
    This is obviously not true.
I've tried to download the software update directly from apple.com ( http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120229 ) but it gives me a full download of iTunes 10.0.1 which I already have installed.
I don't understand why iTunes will not update my iPod's software. I don't understand why the iPod didn't come with the 2.1 version already installed. According to the download page, this version was released in 2003.
Can anyone please explain to me why or more importantly, HOW I can get the ipod software updated when iTunes fails to do it?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hello BookofSplendors,
    And welcome to  Discussions!
Sorry, but that firmware update is for a different model iPod, which would explain why its release date was from 2003 and not something more recent. The firmware on your 120 GB iPod is actually the most up to date version already.

  • IPod Classic 120Gb freezes when connecting

I have a new iPod Classic 120 GB and about every other time when I connect to my PC to sync the iPod freezes. I have to reset the iPod in order to get it to work again. Is there a fix for this?

I have this same issue, it seemed to start with the last firmware upgrade. My 160 Classic is several months old. I sync at least once a day, usually at night. I listen to it in the car to and from work, listen to it all day at work, never any problems. I come home, plug it into my iMac and the iPod freezes. I reset it, it syncs just fine. Lather, rinse, repeat the following day. Maybe one day out of ten it will work, but almost always I have to reset it in order to sync. I've tried connecting the cable directly to the mac, to a hub, with and without the dock. Same story. I am at a loss.
    Thanks,
    Dave

  • IPod Classic crashes with 32.768 or more songs

After I lost the second iPod Classic with about 35.000 songs (128 kbit/s ACC; iTunes shows 15GB as free), I did some research, and with 32766 the iPod works fine, two more songs and the iPod reboots and hangs in the Apple screen, so it should be restored.
Can any one confirm this behavior? Or found a way around this problem?
Occurred on Mac OS 10.6.6 (iTunes 10.1.1) and Windows XP/Vista/7 (iTunes 10.1.1)

  • HT1339 I have an ipod classic.  I have approx. 2000 songs on it.  WHen I move the settings to shuffle all music, the music stops in the middle of the song and moves on to the next one.  It happens every other song or so.

I have an Ipod classic 120gb.  I have approximately 2000 songs on it.  When I put it on shuffle to play it, it stops in the middle of songs and moves to the next.  This happens every other two songs or so.  Please help!

Try playing the song again and if it does it in the same spot on both your ipod and itunes then you have a corrupted file. You need to re-download the song. Don't worry, this is free if you bought it on iTunes. First, verify that you did buy the song on iTunes and not anywhere else. Go to the iTunes store. On the right hand side of the window there is a column named quick links. Look for "Purchased" about 2/3 of the way down. Click on it. The next window that shows up should show you all the tunes you have bought. Find your tune and you'll see that is says "downloaded." Now you know you have the tune.
Now go back to your music library on the left hand column of the window. Click on Music. Find that tune that is giving you the problem. Delete the song.
Now go back to the iTunes store like before and go back to your "purchased" list. The page needs to be reloaded Press the back button and then click "purchased" again on iTunes so the list reloads. Find your tune again. Now instead of it saying "Downloaded," it has a picture of a cloud with an arrow pointing down. Click on it and the tune will download again with, I hope, no problems. I hope this helps.

  • My iPod Classic (120Gb) reboots/crashes/freezes/resets every 15 minutes!

Hi and thanks for checking out my post.
About a year ago, I got an iPod classic (120 gigabyte) for my birthday. It served me well for about 7 months, until the headphone jack got busted and only played the Left channel of every song. So I got a replacement.
My new unit had been serving me for quite some time, until I updated my iPod firmware about a month ago (2.0.1)
Ever since, it has been rebooting to the apple logo screen (or the distorted black/blue/cyan/white variant) every couple of songs. after that, I have to press the menu and select for 6 seconds to get it to reboot faster (about 1 minute). Otherwise, it will take up to 3 minutes! I also have the problem with random song skipping. (doesn't happen to the same songs, it's very random)
I've had the same music loaded on to this iPod as my last one, so it shouldn't be my library causing problems.
I have read some 'solutions' telling me to uninstall iTunes 9 and reverting to iTunes 8. I have also read that by doing so, I won't be able to open my iTunes library. I don't want to lose my library just to get my iPod working again. I have read someone suggesting to defragment my iPod. I've read others saying NOT to defragment it.
    My questions are:
    - if a firmware update is released, will it fix my problems?
    - if it doesn't fix them, will I get a refund or a replacement? (although my warranty time has passed recently)
    - most importantly: how can I prevent my iPod classic 120gb from rebooting randomly?!
Also, the seed for the 'shuffle songs' seems to be the same again whenever my iPod crashes, resulting in the exact same playlist when I choose Shuffle Songs after it has rebooted. when I choose Shuffle songs again after that, it plays an identical playlist to the second one after another reboot. (If you get what I'm saying here)
It does work though when I have the shuffle songs setting on.
Another thing that might be of interest. When I first got the replacement iPod, and plugged it into my laptop, it showed lack of battery life, and it wasn't charging, so I had to charge it directly from the power supply first. (I don't see how this is relevant though)
I am also aware of the other topics about this phenomenon.
The lack of response from Apple, and lack of solutions has made me compile this post.
    Thank you for your time.

I have this very same problem. However, when I watch a film or music video it plays pretty much to the end.......
I have also reset my iPod and no difference. ITunes / Apple say it is a problem and to keep resetting my iPod which is ridiculous as this takes an age to reformat every album and film and game I have for the thing.
At first I thought it was the battery but after watching a 3 hour film (The Great Escape - good film) it shows no sign of locking up at all.
I'm at a loss as the iPod is about full and is aways connected to the car.
Cheers for any help I may be able to get........

  • Ipod Classic 120GB won't shut down

    Hello everyone,
Two weeks ago I went on holiday, and took my Ipod Classic (120GB) with me. I plugged my Ipod into an adapter, and when the battery was full, I disconnected it from the adapter. But somehow, the image of the plug - which is shown when the battery is full - won't go away. Because of this, the battery will just lose all of its energy and I won't be able to use the Ipod for longer than one day. I already plugged it in the PC at home, but the problem hasn't been solved.
My question is: how can I get this "full battery-image" away?
    Thanks in advance

    Hello Jurrolino
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
So you are still able to use the ipod and listen to songs or is it permanently stuck on the battery screen image?
The screen saver (or whatever it is called in this case) for the iPod classic will show the battery meter and time when the iPod has been left idle for awhile. This is a feature of the iPod.
If the iPod is frozen on the battery screen, have you tried a simple reset of the iPod? To do this, toggle the hold switch on and off a few times, then press and hold the Center and Menu buttons together until the Apple logo appears.
If still no luck, I would recommend [restoring|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1339] the iPod via iTunes.
    Hope this helps.

  • I just purchased a 120gb iPod classic 6th generation from a friend. I have the latest iTunes installed and the software on the iPod is also current. My problem is whenever I'm syncing the iPod and iTunes freezes between the 250- 300th song...

I just purchased a 120gb iPod classic 6th generation from a friend. I have the latest iTunes installed and the software on the iPod is also current. My problem is whenever I'm syncing the iPod and iTunes freezes between the 250- 300th song... I have to manually reset the iPod for the iTunes to run correctly, but then my music isn't added and iTunes tells me I have to restore the iPod... I've done this numerous times only to no avail... Someone please help!!!

Here is what worked for me:
My usb hub, being usb2, was too fast. I moved the wire to a usb port directory on my pc. That is a usb1 port which is slow enough to run your snyc.

  • IPod Classic 120GB cannot sync, "Required disk not found"

Somebody, please help! iPod Classic 120GB charcoal, current OS as of about a week ago (won't stay synced long enough for me to see what it is), iMac 24" 10.6.4, iTunes 10.0.1. Let me know if you need any more info and I'll try to provide it.
Everything was absolutely fine until I updated to the newest version of iTunes. Now, when I plug in my iPod, it says it's connecting then jumps straight to the "Okay to disconnect" screen. It never shows up in iTunes at all. After doing this repeatedly, I unplugged it then immediately plugged it in again before it had finished the progress bar on the "Okay to disconnect" screen, and it finally showed up in iTunes, but it gave me an error of "iPod was not properly disconnected" then "cannot sync - required disk not found" and disconnected itself again.
I tried resetting it (menu+center buttons) while it was plugged in, and this did nothing. iTunes still didn't recognize it at all.
About a week ago, I followed some instructions somewhere and toggled the "enable disk use" option (I usually keep it unchecked) then was able to restore it. The songs were added back in a bizarre order (not alphabetical, not chronological, songs within an album added out of order, jumping from artist to artist, etc.) and I had to sync it again for three random albums that it missed the first time, but once everything was in again it was fine. I haven't added any new songs or playlists to my iTunes library since then (just changed a few ratings and I like to keep track of play counts), but when I tried to sync it again this morning, I got exactly the same errors.
The only difference this time is that it alerted me that one song in my library (a song I happen to like very much) could not be synced. The song still shows up on my iPod, but will not play. It still appears and plays in iTunes on the computer.
The iPod works perfectly in day-to-day use and is a little over a year old. I take very good care of it (my previous iPod is four or five years old and still works fine) and it has never had any problems before this. It has almost 100GB worth of music (no other media, just music), which makes it pretty annoying to have to restore it more than absolutely necessary. What is going on here and is there some way to fix it that will last longer than a week?

Hi, yeah I'm experiencing the same issue as everyone else with a 120gb iPod classic using iTunes 10.1.1 (4). Started about the time of OSX 10.6.5 update and hasn't been resolved with the OSX 10.6.6 update.
iPod attempts to Sync but now quits without even appearing on the computer let alone iTunes.
I have ESET security but quitting the app doesn't help.
I also have an iPhone 3Gs and that's still syncing fine (thank heavens), via a different library.
I've since managed to wipe the iPod clean (back to factory settings) as forced to do so by following the instructions in another post to remove the iPod Photo Cache. I then moved my iTunes folder to another directory for safe keeping.
I set up a clean iTunes database thinking my old one might have been corrupted. To do this you open iTunes from scratch while holding down the option key and select "Create Library". iTunes then remembers the last library created whenever you open the app.
When I am able to see the iPod summary screen (a rare occurrence now) I see that "enable disk use" is checked ok - this has been noted as a problem in previous forums. So that's not the issue.
Actually the iPod doesn't even stay connected to my 2010 unibody MacBook Pro when the iPod is switched over to disc mode. It immediately goes into "OK to Disconnect".
So I now have a clean iPod, and clean iTunes - all empty and essentially useless!
Anybody out there with any ideas? Plllleeeeeeeese?

  • Windows XP sp3 + iTunes 8 + New iPod Classic 120GB = Blue Screen Of Death

    HELP
My PC has just upgraded itself with Windows XP Service Pack 3, I have downloaded iTunes 8, and just today bought a new iPod Classic 120GB so I could enjoy the new Genius facility (my old iPod was a 20GB model from 2005). However I keep getting the Blue Screen Of Death whenever I plug in the new iPod, even if I start-up the computer with the iPod connected.
I've read other threads about this topic, but I've only seen people reporting this issue with Vista, not XP.
    - I'm thinking of uninstalling and re-downloading iTunes 8. Will it retain all playlists, album artwork etc.?
    - I'm also thinking of trying to connect with the iPod manually set to disk mode. Will this help to begin with?
Anyone got a fix for this problem yet....Apple?

As a follow-up to my questions above, I've now tried uninstalling and then re-installing iTunes 8 direct from the Download link at Apple.com. I still get the BSOD. I also tried with the new iPod 120GB manually set to disk mode. Again, still I get the BSOD. I also unplugged a couple of other USB peripherals from my PC (writing tablet, card reader), checked for any more Windows XP Updates, but still get the BSOD.
    Anyone got any more ideas?

  • Can I do a duplicate search to delete on my ipod classic 120gb only?  There are no duplicates on my itunes... I think these duplicates arose when I did a restore, and had to reload from the cloud, and my computer backup.... please help...

I have an ipod classic 120gb...
Somehow I have managed to get mutiple duplicates.....
I had a computer crash... and I restore several songs from the cloud, and from my computer backup from an external drive...
and also, from past purchases on itunes...... some songs I had loaded from my own cd collection....and songs had overlapped......
I knew I had duplicates before the crash and never took care of it.... but now of course there are more...
I have taken care of the duplicates in itunes, by deleting them one by one..... I made the mistake of checking boxes then highlighting and doing a mass delete... thinking it would only delete my check boxes.... and loss a lot of music... so had to restore backups again....
    so.......
Ipod......... how do I delete duplicates from the ipod, without loosing music from my ipod... I have lost music that is still there I believe on the Ipod that is not on my itunes... but I am not sure...and I can not find a search duplicates in itunes for Ipod....  can anyone help me on this... is there a way to do it, without going through 8 days of music line by line??
    Thank you

Restore the iPod and reload it from the library... Ah, but there might be media on the device that isn't in the library yes?
See Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device and a script called DeDuper which can help remove unwanted duplicates from iTunes if you end up needing to do a blanket recovery from the iPod. See this  thread for background on DeDuper.

  • IPod Classic 120Gb restarts after syncing?

    Hi,
When I sync and then eject my iPod classic 120Gb, immediately after rejecting (after the progress bar has gone all the way to the right) the iPod reboots...
This seems harmless, I'm having no other problems, I'm sure this isn't supposed to happen, right?
    Any ideas, anyone?
    TIA
    Kevin Pitkin

I forgot to add that usually after I get some songs to sync then I try syncing again, it will end up erasing everything off the iPod and I have to start over.

  • IPod Classic 120GB

I have a iPod classic 120GB and itunes isn't syncing all of my music. I have over 5,000 songs. But, once it syncs about 500 of the songs itunes freezes and stops syncing and gives me an error. I have tried changing the music files from MP3 to AAC that didn't work, I've also tried dragging and dropping the songs in sections and once it gets to 600 songs it give me another error. I've pretty much tried it all and now I have no idea what to do. Someone please help!

It is likely that the iPod's hard drive is faulty, and there is a problem with the iPod's storage media at about the point where 500 to 600 songs would be loaded.  That is why it errors out consistently at about the same point in the data transfer, no matter how you load the songs.
You said you tried converting your song files from MP3 to AAC, so that would rule out a problem with the files being transferred.
It may be a problem with the connection between iPod and computer, but then, I think the problem would occur at a random point, not consistently when you get to about 500 to 600 songs.
You can set the iPod to Disk Mode
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1363
With iTunes NOT running, connect the iPod.  If you have any Windows utilities that can examine a hard drive, you can try them on the iPod's hard drive.
You may want to try reformatting the iPod's hard drive using Windows (instead of doing a Restore in iTunes).  The format type used on the iPod's hard drive is FAT32 (when the iPod is used with a Windows PC).  If there is an option to do a "quick format," do NOT select that option.  Do a "full" format (it may fail at that same point).
If that completes successfully, try running iTunes.  It will probably prompt you to do a Restore, which you will need to do because the iPod does not have any of its software loaded.  Then, see if your problem still recurs.
