IPod Classic 120gb Not Recognized by iTunes

Hello All,
Just completed an upgrade to iTunes v 10.6 and my iPod is no longer recognized by the Software on my 64 bit Windows 7 OS Laptop.  I've heard that this may be a common problem with older iPod's on versions 10.5 or 10.6., is there going to be a patch to fix this problem (new version) or id downgrading to an older version the best thing to do.  Everything was working fine prior to the upgrade so I am completely positive this is where the problem lies.  As a FYI - the iPod shows up as a device under My Computer.
So......what to do?
Thanks

Nevermind....rebooted the iPod and all is well

  • IPod Classic 160GB not recognized by iTunes

I have an iPod Classic 160GB in version 2.0.4 that is not recognized by itunes.
It's about 2 years old and had presented a few problems with sincying in the past, but I hadn't tried to sync it for a while.
I've transfered all the music from my Windows PC to my Mac, and the iPod was Windows formated.
It started presenting a problem to transfer all my music content from iTunes (Mac) to the iPod, but after severel hours, it only transfered a few hundreded. I've tried it several times.
So, I tried to restore it, both in Windows and Mac PCs, but the problem persisted. A hard reset didn't solve it either.
But now I have a bigger problem. The iPod is not recognized by the iTunes anymore, and the program freezes anytime I try to connect ir. As soon as it is disconnected, everything is back to normal. But the Ipod always reboots.
It is recognized in the desktop tough.
Here's what I've already tried unsuccesfully:
    1. Hard Reset.
    2. Put it in disk mode. Still not recognized.
    3. Use Disk Utility. The disk verification says everything is in order. I've erased all content as well as format it in Mas OS Extended (Journaled). Later I've tried to erase it again but now displays a message error saying it cannot unmount the disk.
    4. Used differente USB ports.
    5. Saw all Apple support solutions. None worked.
    6. Researched a whole bunch of forums, including this one. Noticed a lot of people with the same problem, but had difficulty finding one more recent, so I decided to open a new discussion.
I would really appreciate any suggestions.
    Ipod Classic 160GB (2.0.4)
    Itunes (10.6)
    Mac OS Snow Leopard.
    Windows XP.

It seems to be working now. Amazing!
I would like to thank you both for the help, CaliforniaHighwaysGuy and AncientMumu.
Here's what I did. I wasn't getting folder acces from my Windows XP because it was Macintosh formated.
So I connected it again to the Mac and used an online tutorial to be able to access the hidden files through Terminal. (I'm not sure if it's allowed to post links to tutorials from other sites, but I'll look into the rules and post, if possible).
Had to relaunch FInder a few times as it stopped responding from time to time. Went to iPod_Control > iTunes and erased all the files.
Disconnected the iPod, as it was still not recognized by iTunes (10.6).
Connected it to my Windows, wich has the 10.4 version of iTunes. Restored (Windows format) it and disconnected.
Went back to the Mac, and it was recognized. I Didn't restore it.
I've already transfered one album and it synced just fine. (One of the problems I was having is that the music transfer was really slow).
Already reconnected the iPod and it was once again recognized after a few seconds.
I really appreciate all the help.
I'll try to updated this post in a few days saying if it's still working properly.

Hi I had a similar issue with my 160gb Classic
Went through many things with Apple on the phone all to no avail.
Took it to the Genius Bar and managed to get it recognised by iTunes and then restore....but when i plugged it into my MBA or IMac it was not recognised by iTunes and just appeared on the desktop..again.
Given that i am using Yosemite and iTunes 12 and reinstalled iTunes, Apple answer was to do a reinstall on my MBA!
Reluctantly i did this and it worked!!!!!!!!
It was recognised by the ancient iTunes9 before updating to 12 again and it was still recognised....
Just got to reinstall all my music, photos, documents.....at least i have my retro 160Gb iPod Classic to load everything on....
    hope this helps

  • Ipod Classic (160GB) not recognized by iTunes on Win7 64bit

when I connect the iPod classic to my PC (64 bit Win7), I receive a driver software installation error message. Apple Mobile Device USB Driver indicates FAILED. Device Manager shows the "Apple MObile Device USB Driver" within the USB controller section with a "yield" symbol, which of course indicates a driver problem. I have followed the online troubleshooting steps, including trying other USB ports and even re-installing iTunes. The same error message however appears.  It was not that long ago that all was working just fine on this system. What next ?

Hey I'm not any way a representative of Apple or Microsoft but I'll see if I can help (and any advice I give may or may not work):
I think the problem with USB drivers is that they partially install then get messed up. Occasionally that leaves your USB drivers messed up but Windows thinking it's ok.
The way I'd go about this kind of problem is to uninstall the USB drivers as though they never existed using third party software such as USBDeview.
You can download the 64 bit version here: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/usbdeview-x64.zip
More info (if you want to find out how it works): http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/usb_devices_view.html
Using USBDeview, you may want to uninstall any drivers that are causing the issue. Make sure you uninstall the correct drivers that you recognise (from the description).

  • TS1410 iPod classic suddenly not recognized by iTunes

My 30Gb Ipod suddenly is no longer recognized in iTunes on my MacBook Pro. And all the music on it appears to have been wiped clean. However when I plug it into a PC, the device is recognized as a portable hard drive that it wants to reformat. And iTunes does still sync fine with my iPhone and iPod Nano. Can anyone help with this please?

Well, my 3rd gen iPod (that's so old it has to connect using FireWire), my 4th gen iPod (2004 model), and my 1st gen iPod shuffle (from 2005) all still work fine on my iMac with the latest iTunes.  Can't believe everything on the Internet...
If it looks like the iPod currently has no songs on it when you look on the iPod, you should probably do a Restore on the iPod using iTunes.  There may be data corruption on the iPod's hard drive.  This is done from the iPod's Summary tab in iTunes.  This will erase the iPod's hard drive, re-install its software, and set it to default setting.
Since the iPod is not being recognized by iTunes when connected, put the iPod into Disk Mode first

Hopefully, iTunes will now see it.  It may say the iPod is in "Recovery Mode."  Try doing a Restore, if possible.

  • My 120GB IPod classic is not recognized by my Windows 7 PC.  When I plug the ipod into my computer I receive a message saying that the USD device is not recognized.

My 120GB IPod classic is not recognized by my Windows 7 PC.  When I plug the ipod into my computer I receive a message saying that the USD device is not recognized.  The Device Manager lists it as an Unknown Device.  I've tried uninstalling iTunes and reinstalling it, but it had no affect.  The odd thing is that our other iPod (160 GB Classic) is recognized on the same computer using the same USB cable.  When I plug the ipod in question into another PC, the PC seems to recognize the iPod and lists it in Windows Explorer (iTunes is not installed on this machine).  There seems to be something out of wack with this PC/iPod combo.  Any thoughts on what I can do to try to resolve this issue?  I tried all of the steps listed here, but they didn't help me.  http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Are you plugging the iPod into a high powered USB 2.0 port on the back of your PC? Have you tried a different USB cable?
What happens if you try to reset the device with it still connected to the PC?
    How to reset iPod
Has this iPod ever worked on this PC or is this the first time you have time you have tried connecting it?
Have you carefully worked through each and every single suggestion in this Apple support document?

  • HT1923 Hi, my Ipod classic is not reflecting in Itunes (latest version) but I can see it in Computer as a hard disk. Kindly assist

    Hi,
My Ipod classic is not reflecting in Itunes which I have recently downloaded but it reflects in my computer as a hard disk.
    Please give me a solution.
    Thanks

Try Resetting Your iPod while it's connected to the computer.
Hold down the Menu and Select buttons until you see the Apple logo (or Menu & Play/Pause in older models).
This will often get it recognized. It may take several attempts.
Also see these (if you haven't found them already):
Your Windows PC doesn't recognize iPod
iPod does not appear in iTunes or on the desktop
iPod appears in Windows Explorer but does not appear in iTunes

  • IPod classic will not sync after iTunes upgrade

After upgrading to the latest version of iTunes - 10.6.1.7 - yesterday,  my iPod classic is not recognized and I cannot sync it.
The iPod does appear as a drive on my computer (with Windows XP).  The screen message on the iPod states that it is synching with iTunes, the iTunes message states it is synching with the iPod - but the iPod does not download anything new from iTunes and it does not appear as a device on iTunes.
I've gone through the steps for troubleshooting; I've tried syncing the iPod on two different computers - unfortunately both of which have been upgraded to the latest version of iTunes - with the exact same results.
It worked fine before I upgraded iTunes and I'm at a loss on how to fix this.  Is there some way to uninstall the upgrade and reinstall the old version?
Suggestions are most welcome.  Thanks much.

I am also having this problem. I have a 160gb classic that I bought last fall. I have a work computer I've used for my iTunes synch base due to broadband access.  The system had worked well enough with 64 bit XP and a few registration tweaks to calm itunes about working in that old environment. Forward to 2 weeks ago - I copy my library to the network drive so that IT can scrub the computer and upgrade me to Win 7. Computer is back up, install the newest version if iTunes, seems to come up fine. Several rounds of re-importing the library after it kept entering all the songs twice. Go to re-synch the ipod - get the 'this is a new device, erase *EVERYTHING* and re-synch. Yep yep. Sits there for nearly two hours saying it's re-uploading stuff. Then on the way home, I see - hey, a ton of stuff isn't there, lots of missing podcasts. Go check, everything is checked, new stuff downloaded, can listen to it on the PC with headphones. Then go synch the iPod - get the same 'things are updating..... synch finished'. And nothing has up- or down-loaded. Tried unchecking stuff, nada. Import new stuff, nada. Nothing   Plus it looks like pretty much every CD i ripped into itunes for the past 4-5 months failed to move - maybe iTunes was saving it somewhere else than the My Music folder.    PITA-factor of that aside, I'd really like to get at the last 3-4 weeks of podcasts. Any help on getting the system to actually do a real sy
My other changes in the last few weeks are getting a new iPhone to replace an old non-iPhone, so there is another devicee on the account. I don't see my iPod listed amongst my devices in the iTunes store - not sure if that's only for wireless stuff.
    Help!!

  • IPod Classic will not connect to iTunes, tried many different things to fix but nothing worked

    What I devices I have:
I have a classic iPod and a dell laptop with windows xp.
    The problem:
iTunes and iPod work fine separately, however when I plug iPod in, iTunes will not open. If iTunes was open at the time I plugged in iPod, it freezes and wont function again until iPod is disconnected. [Once I left iPod plugged in for an hour and iTunes did open, but iPod was not noted as being connected.]
iPod charges when connected. Icon takes about 5 minutes to show up in my Computer folder. When I click the icon nothing will happen or the folder will freeze up. iPod doesn’t show up in Disk Manager either. Putting iPod into Disk Mode changed nothing.
    How it happened:
Once when I plugged in iPod a window (not an iTunes window) popped up saying that the device should be formatted or it may not work properly. Not wanting my iPod to stop working, I clicked ok and now my iPod isn’t working. Lesson: don’t click strange buttons
    What I’ve done:
    > Right clicking and clicking ‘format’ on the iPod icon while in the Computer folder – computer does nothing or freezes
    > Going to ‘reset your iPod’ – didn’t fix the problem
    > Restarting iPod (turn on and off)
    > Telling iTunes to prevent iPod from syncing automatically
    > Uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes
    > Put iPod in Disk Mode, computer still didn’t recognize it.
    > everyother thing google and apple's self help section has recomended
    Any more suggestions?

    Assuming a PC start here:
iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows
It is normal for the computer to recognize the iPod as a camera since thatis how one gets photos and videos off the iPod.

  • Ipod classic will not connect to Itunes

I have had no trouble with my MacBook Ipod connection until I reformatted my hard drive on my mac book ( 2ghz intel dual core 2) and reinstalled my operating software OS 10.4.11. Now when I connect my Classic ipod 160 gig, I get the message "The ipod cannot be used because it requires Itunes version 9.0 or later. Go to WWW.itunes.com to download the latest version of iTunes". I have done that a couple of times, but still the same message and my ipod still is not recognized in iTunes. Can anyone help? Thanks

Plausibly, you might have ended up with two different versions of iTunes on the PC, and the iPod is trying to connect to the wrong one. To check for that, see the *Opening iTunes* section down the bottom of the following document:
[Troubleshooting iTunes installation on Mac OS X|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2311]
But if no luck there, try a complete uninstall/reinstall of iTunes, as per the following document:

My ipod touch is not recognized on itunes and will not turn on or even give me the battery sign that it is dead. I turned it off and it won't turn back on now. The screen is completely black and won't do anything. I have tried charging it over night and nothing happened. It was never near water. I have tried troubleshooting it by holding down the home button and the sleep/wake button, but nothing happened and it didn't work. What can I do to fix it?

My ipod nano is not recognized in itunes on my computer, when it has in the past. How do I fix this problem?

I would think, Twins1995, that if we are having the problem, others are as well. Hopefully, Apple will shortly issue a follow-up software release to fix the problem. Or is that just wishful thinking on my part.
It would be helpful, if there were some kind of work-around in the interim, so we can use our devices. Pretty frustrating when you consider that all of the hardware and software is produced by Apple.
