IPod Classic 160 GB refuses to sync a 70 GB iTunes library

Title says it all: my iTunes library is well below the maximum capacity of my iPod, but I still get a message that the library is too big to fit on the Classic's disc.
I am not getting negative error messages (as stated by others here on the discussion board), there are no corrupt files and I checked the discs. I also deselected syncing of my movies, series, podcasts and photos (although there should be enough room to sync those, too: they amount to about another 70 GB). I also restaured the iPod with only music syncing left, with no success.
Funny thing is, iTunes always reports that there needs to be about 48,8 GB free but that there are only 48,2 GB available (this was before I deselected photo syncing). When I deselected photo syncing (about 3 GB), those two numbers didn't change in any significant way, as far as I can tell.
Anyone got an idea what's going on here?

Thank your for your suggestion, but I think now it is related to my putting the smart playlists into a folder of their own (to reduce clutter).
As soon as I select those to sync, I get the error message.
This seems bizarre to me, because, as I understand it, smart playlists should increase iPods content only by a few hundred bytes at most, but somehow removing them from their default location may trigger an additional copy of all the songs included to be transferred to the iPod.

  • Why do duplicate albums appear on my iPod Classic screen when there are no duplicates in my iTunes Library?

Why do duplicate albums appear on my i{Pod Classic screen when there are no duplicates in my iTunes Library?

It's probably going to be a capitalisation error. In other words, one or more tracks on the album has a lower case letter at the beginning of the album name while all the others have a capital letter. They can be difficult to spot.
In iTunes, examine one of your duplicated albums carefully. You should be looking for a slight difference between the album title name. Look at the screenshot below, can you see the error in the album title?
    It is there...
The title track (Left Of The Middle). Look at the capitalisation of the album name.
Once you find you error in your album, re-type it (or copy-and-paste from one track to all the tracks) and then SYnc your iPod to iTunes. Does that cure it? If nto, let us know.

  • Ipod Classic 160 Gb refuses to play several songs.

    Hi
i´m long time reader , first time "complainer".
I had an Ipod 4G then 5.5 Video 80 Gig and had no problems with them.
All songs in my library were played without any glitches.
Ipod classic simply refuses to play some of them.
Those songs are very "old" i ripped them with a decoder called lame long time ago.
4G and 5.5 G Ipods played them and itunes still dose but Ipod classic don´t.
I chose a song and Ipod simply stops i mean not freezes just stops playing. I can move forward and back in song and i can see "play" symbol in upper right corner but the progress marker dont move and i dont hear any sound.
Is here someone with a similar problem ?
i´m sorry for my bad english.

If those Files are ripped in .mp3 (this is what I guess) you may try to convert them to .mp3 again. There is a Tool called dbPowerAmp which is shareware, but I think, a free demo is available. With this Tool, I once repaired some Songs that where ripped with Lame. My old Player MusicMatch said, their are curpted. iTunes played them well. So just try to reconvert your files from .mp3 to .mp3.
By the way: The Format .aac is not a bad one.

  • IPod Classic 160 GB refuses to restore

I was using this iPod on a Macbook Pro last night, doing a transfer on Music Rescue. Halfway through the transfer the program crashed, and my iPod's data got corrupted.
I hooked it up to my Macbook Pro and the computer wouldn't recognize it. I then hooked it up to a PC and formatted the disk (because iTunes wouldn't restore it) to a exFAT setting. Then, back to the Macbook and formatted again to Mac OS X Extended Journaled.
Now iTunes at least recognizes it, but still can't restore it. I get the error message that my iPod is busy and can't be restored. When I put it into Disk Mode and try to restore it, it gets all the way through, the progress bar fills up and then boom, "Unkown Error occured" with no code.
The iPod itself displays all the normal screens, but when I turn it on it shows there is no music, no videos, no anything, and yet when I go to Settings > About, it first showed that my iPod was completely full, and yet had no music, and now it says 0 KB free and 0 KB used.
I have been at this for hours, I just want my iPod back. I can't send it back to Apple because it got run over by a car a few months ago. That has never been an issue for performance, so I don't see why it would be now.
    Somebody help me!

Well, looks like after a bunch of connecting, disconnecting, formatting, and restoring attempts, it finally just worked! Anyone who has this issue, if it looks like your iTunes freezes in the middle of the restore process, DONT QUIT! Just let it run for a few minutes. It'll work.

  • IPod classic will not mount or sync

I seem to have the same problem explained here: http://www.news.com/8301-10784_3-9775240-7.html
My new iPod Classic 160 GB will only sync once and then nothing. It won't mount in iTunes or on the desktop. I have tried restore and resetting but to no avail. If I log out and log back in it still won't mount but if I restart my Mac then it will mount and sync once. If I try to make any changes to the settings, I get the message: "the settings were not saved for the ipod "my iPod" because it could not be found"
Anyone know how to fix this?

This Gizmo report saved my day (and more since I had this BUG for a lot of weeks…)
To solve your problem just follow the advice in the article.
To have more time to enable the disk use I'd suggest you add before you connect your iPod a lot of new files to your iTunes Library! Video files would take more time to synch…

  • IPod classic displays 'No music' after sync, HDD problem? Geschiedenis • Verwijder  So recently I synced my iPod Classic 160 GB like I did so many times and when I wanted to play some music afterwards it couldn't find any files on the iPod anymore. H

So recently I synced my iPod Classic 160 GB like I did so many times and when I wanted to play some music afterwards it couldn’t find any files on the iPod anymore. However when you look in the settings it displays that ~roughly 90 GB free space is available. Seen the fact that I had about 60 gigs of music this doesn’t seem like a coincidence and I think my music is still somewhere on the ipod but the HDD isn’t recognizing it anymore.
I’ve tried resetting it, and resetting it to factory settings, which didn’t work. When connected to a desktop it won’t be recognized by iTunes, it displays an error message that the iPod cannot be read and that I have to reset it to factory settings.
I’ve spent some time researching this problem yesterday and I ran into a myriad of vaguely similar problems didn’t really offer any help. Currently I’m thinking that formatting the iPod might work, and restoring the software afterwards. However this is a rather bold strategy so I’d like to consult you here first.
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi turingtest2,
Thank you for the info, with formatting my iPod I managed to connect it to iTunes again.
However..in the page you linked to there is a section about how transferring large amounts of data can dump your library. That seems to be the problem in this case. It won't even allow me to transfer more than 2 gigabytes of music per sync, if I go higher it will dump everything again. Having over >60 GB of music in my library, this is disastrous to say the least.
Do you think that there is any other solution besides the method you mentioned involving Smart Playlists?

  • Ipod Classic 160 6th g. doesn't sync w/Imac g5 non intel OS 10.4.11. This is a replacement for same ipod which was stolen recently. That pod worked fine with Itunes 9! Now this pod says it only works with Itunes 10.7. ***!!!! Why has Apple screwed up?

My ipod classic 160 6th gen. was recently stolen. It had 3000 tunes on it and it synced perfectly with Itunes 9 on my Imac G5 non intel OS 10.4.11. So I recently bought same model and guess what, it doesn't sync at all. Now message says it only works with Itunes 10.7 and up. I certainly cant afford to buy a new intel based Mac and I really dont need a new pc. It feels like Apple has dropped the ball on its long time users and tough luck to you and all the $$$$$$$ spent on downloading songs and buying ipods over the years! I AM SO ANGRY THAT I CANNOT BRING MY MUSIC WITH ME ANYMORE. I dont know if there is any solution to this except being extorted to upgrade to new tech! I have been trying to get answers to this issue but nothing seems to work. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am not a tech genius so extremely techy solutions will be in vane.

one more detail, after a restore, when I attempt to reload music to the ipod, if I try and move, say, 20 files, the transfer seems to work as it should but then stalls on the last file.  Eventually, the status will change to "Updates Files on (my ipod)" a and suggests the iPod is syncing  even though I have the auto sync feature turned off.
This process eventually works itself out, and seems to take longer relative to the number of files I attempt to transfer.   Once done, howver, if I try and eject and dismount the iPod, iTunes stalls with the spinning pinwheel and I am warned that the iPod is syncing again with the spinning candy cane status bar.     Eventually thisd works itself out and the iPod dismounts from iTunes and the desktop and eventually the iPod is free to disconnect.
Then if I try and play the music I just transfered, the iPod says there is no music loaded.
    Ideas?

  • I have an ipod classic 160 GB, and itunes 11.0.1. Itunes won't sync when I try to sync several cds I've downloaded into itunes. If I try to sync the same cds one at a time, it works. What's happening? What's the fix?

I have a  sync problem when trying to sync multiple cd's I've downloaded into itunes, at the same time. I have an ipod classic 160 GB, and use itunes 11.0.1. If I delete the songs from itunes, reload the same discs one at a time, and sync after each individual cd, all goes well. What's going on and what's the fix?

    Thanks for your help Jim
I found some info in other threads and read that some people had re-downloaded, re-installed and were now working OK. Unfortunately some others went through that pain and still had the issue.
I found a reference to deleting the file 'iTunes Library.itl' and copying back the previous version of that file.
I tried this and when I fired up iTunes I noticed there was a window pop up saying iTunes was updating the database to version 11. I then re-imported the CD and now the songs are there in iTunes, the artwork is there and song titles etc. The songs play and everything appears normal again.
It would appear that my issue was the database was not correctly upgraded correctly durting the original upgrade, this theory is to some extent supported by the fact some people have had success re-installing version 11. This also suggests the upgrade process may be a little flaky.
Anyway thank you to the person suggesting downgrading the 'iTunes Library.itl' file, sorry I did not take a note of your name.

  • Ipod classic 160 , iMac tiger 10.4.11 , itunes 9.1 not syncing & freezes up

Im ready to yank my freakin hair out. I have called and talked with itunes support and got nowhere. I have downloaded , upgraded , restored and even returned 2 ipod classics to see if they were the problem.
When I sync it gets to about 1-3 gb and freezes everything (ipod , itunes , computer) I have put up with everyone acting like its something Im doing. It always ends up saying ( cant read or write to the ipod ) This is ridiculous!!!!!!!!!!! I have 15,500 songs and cant use them mobile at all, this *** after my girlfriend spending $280.
What is going on?????? , and is there going to be an itunes up date for this sooner than later or should I return it before its to late? A Best Buy saleman said something about many complaints about this and that I should be able to expect an update soon... so I have a new 160 sitting in a box Im afraid to open.

I'm not sure that if this is exactly the same problem you're having but it sounds similiar...
I have just purchased a new ipod classic 160, and have attempted to sync it with my itunes 9.1 library. It managed to sync about 3 Gb and then an error message came up saying "Attempting to copy to the disk "iPod" failed. The disk could not be read from or written to." I then tried manually transferring the music and was successful with some of the music, but with other tracks the same error message came up. I performed a restore on the iPod, as I initially formatted it on a PC, not my Mac, and thought this might be the problem. Unfortunately this didn't fix it. As far as I can see there is no pattern to the tracks that it won't load on (well not to my eyes anyway). I would be grateful for any suggestions as I'm off traveling in a few days time without my laptop and can't imagine myself without my music collection!

  • My iPod Classic 160 is in disc mode and won't turn off, itunes doesn't recognize it - ¿how can I make it work again?

My iPod Classic 160 is in disc mode.  I responds to nothing.  iTunes doesn't recognize it.  It doesn't sync.  I've tried to restore and got error 1429.  Now it just stays in disc mode and won't turn off.  I'm keeping it connected to the charger so it doesn't go dead.  Is there anything I can do to resurrect my pod?

To get out of disk mode do a iPod Hard Reset.
Toggle the Hold switch till you dont see the red mark.
Press Menu and Center buttons simultaneously for about 10 secs till the Apple logo comes ON then release the buttons
    Select your preferred language.

  • Ipod classic 160 not visible in tunes 12

My perfectly functioning ipod classic 160 gb is invisible to itunes. It shows on the ipod screen it is connected and it shows on the imac screen as an ipod. In itunes it does not exist. It worked perfectly with itunes before the upgrade. I have seen the device bar and my iphone 5s displays there normally and functions perfectly. When only the ipod is plugged in, there are no devices in the bar and the itunes menu for device is greyed out.

If you have not, disconnect all USB devices (including any hubs).  You can leave standard keyboard/mouse connected, if used.  With iTunes running, connect iPod to a direct USB port by itself.  This is to rule out a problem a conflict between connected USB devices, or a lack of power on the USB bus for all connected USB devices.  If you already tried that, or it does not help...
Since the iPod appears initially in iTunes, the problem may be a "feature" that recent Windows PCs, with Windows 8 and USB 3.0 ports, seem to have.  It is an "energy saver" setting that turns off full power to the USB port if the connected device is deemed "inactive" by Windows.  When you connect the iPod, iTunes does its initial sync for a few seconds.  That's when the iPod is seen in iTunes.  After the sync, iTunes unmounts the iPod's disk.  If Windows considers the iPod to be inactive and turns off full power to the USB port, that is when the iPod disappears from iTunes.
If this is the cause, you may be able to go into Windows Control Panels and turn OFF this feature (so USB ports always stay at full power).  If that does not work, or you can't find such as setting...
Alternately, you can Enable disk use on the iPod.  With disk use enabled, the iPod's disk remains mounted by the system until you Eject the iPod in iTunes, so the port remains at full power.  This may be difficult, if you don't have enough time to click on the iPod in iTunes and check the box for Enable disk use on the iPod Summary settings screen (and click Apply).  I'm assuming you have your iPod set to automatically sync your entire iTunes music library.  If so, you can extend the iPod's initial sync (when you connect it) by making a significant change to your iTunes music library (before you connect it).  If you happen to have some music CDs that you need to import into iTunes, that would work.  Add new songs to your iTunes library, and then connect iPod.  If you use the Sync only checked items setting, you can uncheck a large number of songs in your music library, connect to sync, then recheck the songs, connect to sync.  Making iTunes sync a few dozen songs during the initial sync should give you enough time to go to the iPod's Summary settings screen, and check the box for Enable disk use (and click Apply).
If that does not work (or the iPod still disappears quickly even when there are changes to sync), the cause something else.  FYI - It's not because iTunes 12 does not support discontinued iPods.  I have an 3rd gen "classic" iPod from 2003, and it works fine with iTunes 12.

This is good for me but what happened?
I don't understand the question...  Did something happen that you think should not have happened?
It took such a long time to sync, because iTunes was converting songs with bit-rate higher than 128 kbps "on the fly" while syncing.  That takes much longer than just syncing the songs.
Also, since you have so much space on your iPod (compared to the size of your music library), you should not use that "convert to 128 kbps AAC" setting.  For songs that are encoded higher than 128 kbps, the conversion reduces sound quality.  You may want to uncheck Sync Music and Apply, to remove the songs on the iPod currently, and then sync it all again without the "convert" setting checked this time.

  • Help with import/drag one photo into iPod Classic 160

Hello - I could swear I've done this before --- I've got my iPod Classic 160 Gb synced to iTunes, and JUST want to drag one little photo onto my iPod (in the left column), but I get an alert & it won't let me do this. Can't you just add a photo by dragging it onto the iPod in the left column? I don't want to totally sync my iPod as I get a warning saying that if I sync for photos, it will replace ALL photos and music with what is in my iTunes library, and I don't have the entire contents of my iPod currently in my iTunes library. Can't I do a simple thing like add one photo? (It's a .jpg.) Thank you very much for any help.
    Nick

Thanks again for your suggestion about taking the charger back to the store. We tried it there and the charger itself worked fine (shocker!) so we tried with a different Apple charger and my iPod. And it finally worked! The guy at the store tried to explain to me WHY the charger hadn't worked with my iPod (something about ampere or something) but when I told him that it in fact worked with my old iPod from 2007 he had to agree that it was very strange.
Anyway, they didn't have in stock that new slick Apple charger (small and thin compared to the big squared one I got first) so I ended up buying a Belkin charger that works great. So all's well that ends well!
