IPod Classic 160 MAC to PC Windows 7 does not happen

Hi everyone. I would really appreciate your input on this.
I can find similar, but not exact cases like mine.
I've owned a first generation 160 GB iPod Touch for two years now.
I have always used it on a Mac.
I sold it over the internet and the new owner has a PC running Windows 7 with up-to-date iTunes.
When we connect the iPod to the PC, *it won't recognize it (not even as an external hard drive), it also won't appear (obviously) in the iTunes connected devices panel.*
*Therefore, there is no way to ask the Windows iTunes to change the iPod to PC format.*
(The iPod has the latest Mac firmware version 1.1.2).
Any suggestions???

My first guess here would be that he needs to uninstall and reinstall his iTunes and device manager setup. Here is a link to the apple article on this:

When he plugs it into a windows system, it should give him a task bar dialog that it has found a new device, but then get more specific and tell him it is an iPod. Then give him the usual ready for use notice.
Don't have the iPod connected while reinstalling. Wait for the system to boot up and then connect the iPod. Do not connect it through a USB hub. Connect it directly to a USB port on the back of the computer.

    I have a brand new 160 GB Classic. When I connect it to my Powerbook, it begins the normal process of auto-syncing my library. I have a total of just over 5000 songs; When it gets to about 3200, it stops, and says Sync is complete. I press "Sync" again, and it starts where it left off, but then stops again at around 4800 songs. I've gone thru this several times, and am now 4 songs away from getting a "complete" sync (where my entire library will finally be copied onto my iPod).
    What's causing the iPod to think that it's already copied everything when there's still more stuff it needs to copy?

    Well, for anyone looking at this, I may have figured it out. I had a total of 5366 songs in iTunes; after numerous clicks of the "Sync" button, I was able to get 5365 of them on to the iPod. However, even in Manual mode, I was not able to get the one remaining song to transfer. It took me a good while, but I tracked down which song it was. For whatever reason, it would not copy, even though it was a song ripped from one of my own CD's, and it played fine on my Powerbook and my 4th Gen iPod. I deleted the song, re-ripped it, and it transferred fine. My assumption is that iTunes stopped transferring music once it came to this track in the library.
    If that doesn't sound like the case, someone please reply.

  • IPod classic in a BMW 3 series (E92) does not recharge

    I used to have an iPod nano (G1) in my BMW 3 series (E92) with the AUX and USB Connector.
    With the Nano the battery was fully charged at all times.
    When I connect my iPod classic (80 GB), the iPod is not charged. As a matter of fact after I used it in the car for a day, the battery would be fully discharged. Only after I recharged the Classic it could be used in the car again.
    Any idea what could be the problem?

    Hope Apple will fix the problem any time soon. I habe 35 GB of music and the Nano will only take 4GB - very sad.
    Reading the posts in the other thread makes it clear that this is an Apple-problem, not BMW.
    I mean I bought the Classic just to leave him in my car most of the times. Now I have such a fine car and annot listen to my favorite music - very,very sad indeed...

I recently updated my itunes to the newest version and my Ipod seemed fine and didn't have any trouble. About a week later my Ipod was no longer recognized by Itunes or my Mac book. The catch is, that my Ipod is still able to charge but never shows any signs of connection besides the charging screen. I have no clue where to begin.

    most cases, iTunes can play these high quality songs, which is meant for newer mobile devices like  iPhones, iPod Touch, nano and iPad, which the older iPod cant play, but only playable with iPod classic sofware version 2.0.4
    most likely it is an incompatible song format, read this Apple support article.

    If  your iPod software is version 1.1.2, then you have to use lower quality format.
    Can you select the problematic song, and Advance -> create iPod version

  • Ipod Classic 160 6th g. doesn't sync w/Imac g5 non intel OS 10.4.11. This is a replacement for same ipod which was stolen recently. That pod worked fine with Itunes 9! Now this pod says it only works with Itunes 10.7. ***!!!! Why has Apple screwed up?

    My ipod classic 160 6th gen. was recently stolen. It had 3000 tunes on it and it synced perfectly with Itunes 9 on my Imac G5 non intel OS 10.4.11. So I recently bought same model and guess what, it doesn't sync at all. Now message says it only works with Itunes 10.7 and up. I certainly cant afford to buy a new intel based Mac and I really dont need a new pc. It feels like Apple has dropped the ball on its long time users and tough luck to you and all the $$$$$$$ spent on downloading songs and buying ipods over the years! I AM SO ANGRY THAT I CANNOT BRING MY MUSIC WITH ME ANYMORE. I dont know if there is any solution to this except being extorted to upgrade to new tech! I have been trying to get answers to this issue but nothing seems to work. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am not a tech genius so extremely techy solutions will be in vane.

    one more detail, after a restore, when I attempt to reload music to the ipod, if I try and move, say, 20 files, the transfer seems to work as it should but then stalls on the last file.  Eventually, the status will change to "Updates Files on (my ipod)" a and suggests the iPod is syncing  even though I have the auto sync feature turned off.
    This process eventually works itself out, and seems to take longer relative to the number of files I attempt to transfer.   Once done, howver, if I try and eject and dismount the iPod, iTunes stalls with the spinning pinwheel and I am warned that the iPod is syncing again with the spinning candy cane status bar.     Eventually thisd works itself out and the iPod dismounts from iTunes and the desktop and eventually the iPod is free to disconnect.
    Then if I try and play the music I just transfered, the iPod says there is no music loaded.
    Ideas?

    Brand new iPod classic 160 gb won't show up in iTunes devices. The iPod is fully charged, iTunes reckonises my iPod touch, iPad, iPhone 3G and iPhone 4, but not the iPod classic, although it says the iPod is connected it doesn't register in iTunes.

    I purchased a new iPod Classic 160 GB in August 2013 and it (the iPod Classic device) would not show in iTunes though it did show in the Apple Finder. I tried EVERYTHING numerous times including resetting the iPod, updating iTunes and trying everything in the book and in on-line tips. Nothing worked and I was about to give up when I tried using the Apple iPod Classic cable that actually came in the iPod Classic box. It worked!!! Conclusion? Dont just use any old Apple cable eg. from a iPhone or whatever; TRY the USB cable that came with your iPod Classic!!! I have 2009 iMac with the latest Mac OS BTW.

    Ipod Classic 160 (not recognized by computer) and under Ipod Diagonistics (no Ipod found). I have two other Ipods which I-Tunes and my computer recognizes.  I have reset Ipod to no avail. Because I am unable to connect to I-Tunes with the Ipod I am unable to restore or reset.  I have watched all the YouTube videos and followed each.  One thing that is strange is it will not test or disconnect from disk mode.  I really enjoyed this I pod and hope one of you can resolve this problem for me.  Thanks

    Message from Itunes when I connect Ipod Classic 160 is "Software required for communicating with the Ipod is not installed correctly. Please reinstall Itunes" I have reinstalled 7.6 several times and tried 7.5 but nothing works. I have tried the 5R's. Nothing. When I connect the Ipod to another older Seanix with Itunes 7.5, it works. Can anybody out there solve this problem. I have been going round and round for 10 hours. Cheers.

  • Ipod classic 160 not visible in tunes 12

    My perfectly functioning ipod classic 160 gb is invisible to itunes. It shows on the ipod screen it is connected and it shows on the imac screen as an ipod. In itunes it does not exist. It worked perfectly with itunes before the upgrade. I have seen the device bar and my iphone 5s displays there normally and functions perfectly. When only the ipod is plugged in, there are no devices in the bar and the itunes menu for device is greyed out.

    If you have not, disconnect all USB devices (including any hubs).  You can leave standard keyboard/mouse connected, if used.  With iTunes running, connect iPod to a direct USB port by itself.  This is to rule out a problem a conflict between connected USB devices, or a lack of power on the USB bus for all connected USB devices.  If you already tried that, or it does not help...
    Since the iPod appears initially in iTunes, the problem may be a "feature" that recent Windows PCs, with Windows 8 and USB 3.0 ports, seem to have.  It is an "energy saver" setting that turns off full power to the USB port if the connected device is deemed "inactive" by Windows.  When you connect the iPod, iTunes does its initial sync for a few seconds.  That's when the iPod is seen in iTunes.  After the sync, iTunes unmounts the iPod's disk.  If Windows considers the iPod to be inactive and turns off full power to the USB port, that is when the iPod disappears from iTunes.
    If this is the cause, you may be able to go into Windows Control Panels and turn OFF this feature (so USB ports always stay at full power).  If that does not work, or you can't find such as setting...
    Alternately, you can Enable disk use on the iPod.  With disk use enabled, the iPod's disk remains mounted by the system until you Eject the iPod in iTunes, so the port remains at full power.  This may be difficult, if you don't have enough time to click on the iPod in iTunes and check the box for Enable disk use on the iPod Summary settings screen (and click Apply).  I'm assuming you have your iPod set to automatically sync your entire iTunes music library.  If so, you can extend the iPod's initial sync (when you connect it) by making a significant change to your iTunes music library (before you connect it).  If you happen to have some music CDs that you need to import into iTunes, that would work.  Add new songs to your iTunes library, and then connect iPod.  If you use the Sync only checked items setting, you can uncheck a large number of songs in your music library, connect to sync, then recheck the songs, connect to sync.  Making iTunes sync a few dozen songs during the initial sync should give you enough time to go to the iPod's Summary settings screen, and check the box for Enable disk use (and click Apply).
    If that does not work (or the iPod still disappears quickly even when there are changes to sync), the cause something else.  FYI - It's not because iTunes 12 does not support discontinued iPods.  I have an 3rd gen "classic" iPod from 2003, and it works fine with iTunes 12.

    Is there a way to import my extensive cd collection (at least 160GB worth) to my ipod classic 160 using a laptop that has only 30GB? Can I somehow use my 1TB external drive to help get all the music onto my ipod? So far everything I import to itunes goes directly on my laptop which has been quickly overloaded. Can anyone give me an idea of what to do here. This was so easy using non apple mp3. There must be a way!

    First, there is no need to convert mp3 files to AAC, iTunes and iPod support mp3 just fine. So, you can rip your CDs in iTunes in the mp3 or AAC format, or any of the formats supported by iTunes.
    Second, it sounds like you’re interested in moving your library off of your laptop and onto your external drive, no problem! That makes it easier to help if that is your ultimate goal. But just to make it clear, there are a few considerations you need to be aware of:
    a- iTunes has a “Consolidate Library” utility that lets you port all your music files to a new location. Doing this leaves the original music files in place and creates copies in the new location. So, you need to decide if you want to keep the originals or delete them once they are all copied to the external drive. You can make that choice later.
    b- When you consolidate your library to your external drive, iTunes will have to manage the organization of the files and folders. So, if you’re using your own way of filing your mp3 files and not letting iTunes manage it, then consolidating your library will copy all your files into the iTunes organization on the external drive (but your original files will remain where they were).
    c- Having an iTunes library on an external drive works just fine but there can be a few quirks. If you have a PC, sometimes Windows decides to change the drive letter of your external drive for no apparent reason. Also, if you start iTunes and it can’t find the external drive (disconnected, power off, new drive letter, etc.) then iTunes will open with a default library, which it expects to be on the C:\...\My Music\iTunes location. If you don’t have a library file in that location, then iTunes will create one and open up with a blank library. However, both of these risks can be handled easily and are recoverable.
    d- You can have multiple iTunes libraries, such as the one on your external drive and perhaps the original library on your laptop. However, all libraries are independent so when you change one there is no change to the others. If you manage multiple libraries, you need to decide up front which will be your primary library. Since you have a capacity limitation on your laptop, your primary would be the external drive. The reason to decide this is so that (1) if you auto-sync your iPod, you want it to reflect what’s in the primary library, which may be different from the one on your laptop, and (2) when you add new music, make tag changes, make new playlists, etc., you make sure you’re doing that to your primary library so that the changes get put onto your iPod. So, if you decide to keep the original library on your laptop as an auxiliary library, then you should not auto-sync your iPod with that library open since over time it will differ from your primary library on your external drive. Also, when adding new music, do that with your primary library open, not the one kept on your laptop. With some experience, you can learn how to add new music to your external drive, then also add it to your laptop, but I won’t get into that now.
    So, if you’re ready to go through with this, follow these steps:
    1- Make a backup copy of your "iTunes Library.itl" file. By default, this is located in your C:\...\My Music\iTunes. Keep a copy of this file in a safe place just in case something goes wrong with the consolidation (see step 9 for recovery). You should make a habit of backing this file up anyway since it contains all your playlists, song ratings, and play history.
    2- Create a folder on your external drive where you’re going to put your music files. If you have some music already on the external, I don’t recommend putting your new library there, create a separate folder (e.g. E:\iTunes Music). If you already have some music on the external drive that you want in iTunes, you will add those at the end of this process.
    3- Start iTunes and go to your iTunes preferences (Edit/Preferences, then click on the Advanced tab). Next to the “iTunes Music folder location” window, click on the “Change” button and navigate to the folder you created in step 2. iTunes will put up a message indicating something like “updating library” but that doesn’t actually move your library.
    4- While still looking at your iTunes preferences, make sure these two options are selected: "Keep iTunes music folder organized" and "Copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library". Close the preferences dialog.
    5- Select the iTunes command Advanced/Consolidate Library. iTunes will warn you that this is a big change, so let it rip if you're ready. iTunes will copy all your laptop’s library to the new location on your external drive. This may take awhile if you have a large library.
    6- When the consolidation is complete, right-click on any song and select Get Info. Check to see that iTunes has the native file stored in the new location on the external drive.
    7- This step is optional, but I recommend doing it to help prevent problems with drive letter changes, and it makes your iTunes library completely portable to other Windows PCs running the same version of iTunes as your laptop. Close iTunes and go to the C:\...\My Music\iTunes folder. Move (don’t copy) the "iTunes Library.itl" and "iTunes Music Library.xml" files to your external drive. You can put them anywhere but I recommend a folder that is easy to see and understand (e.g. E:\iTunes Library Files). Now, hold the Shift key while you start iTunes – keep holding the Shift key until you are prompted to “Choose Library” or “Create Library”. Select “Choose Library” and navigate to you put the "iTunes Library.itl" file on the external drive. iTunes will start up as usual. Note that holding the Shift key while you start iTunes is how you toggle between libraries, and how you can create a new (blank) library. Also, iTunes remembers the location of the last library it opened, so you don’t need to use the Shift key to re-open the library you last used.
    8- If you had music on the external drive that you want to add to iTunes (now that you have extra capacity on the external drive), then simply drag and drop these files directly into your iTunes library. iTunes will make copies of these songs and organize them in the new folder structure you’ve set up – you can delete the original copies of these songs once you confirm that they’re new location in iTunes is set.
    9- If any of the above steps got messed up, or you’re not happy with the results, then simply restore the copy of the "iTunes Library.itl" file you backed up in step 1 (put it back in the same location), then hold the Shift key while you start iTunes and navigate to the original "iTunes Library.itl" file location on your C: drive.
    10- If all is well and you don’t want the original files on your laptop, then delete away. If you decide to keep the original files as an alternate library, then do the same as in step 9 to restore the original library. You can then toggle between libraries by holding the Shift key while starting iTunes and selecting the appropriate "iTunes Library.itl" file. Note that to change from one library to another, you need to close iTunes and restart it with the Shift key being held – you cannot change from one library to another with iTunes open. Also, sometimes it helps to put something in each library so that you can easily tell which one you have open. Maybe create a folder in the iTunes source column called "Primary" or "Secondary" so you can tell when you open one library vs. the other.
    11- If you launch iTunes expecting it to open the library on your external drive and it comes up with an empty library, or the original library, that may mean that your external drive is not being recognized by your laptop. Check to make sure it is active, then re-start iTunes with the Shift key and select the "iTunes Library.itl" file on the external drive to return to your primary library.
    12- If you have other PCs with the same version of iTunes, you can connect your external drive to them and use the Shift key as you launch iTunes to select your library. This makes your library portable to other computers – cool huh?

  • IPod Classic 160 - unplayable mp3s

    Hello to all
    I recently purchased an iPod Classic 160 GB
    On iTunes I have about 45 GB of music including mp3 recorded by my concerts
    The iPod can not play some of these mp3, whereas other mp3 players have no problem to play these songs.
    iTunes on my MacBook Pro works correctly with all the mp3.
    When I connect the iPod via bluetooth to my car, the car appears on the display "iPod error" (which does not happen if the songs mentioned above are not present on the device)
    Do you have ideas? Suggestions?
