IPod Classic 160g -- movie playback sometimes jerk and jump

I rip a lot of old movies using HandBrake and load them on my brand new iPod Classic 160G. I've noticed that the picture of this movie or that will jerk and jump. In other words, frames will jump ahead in a jerky manner out of sync with the sound. It's more of an irritation than a monstrous problem, but I had never experienced this phenomenon with my original iPod Classic 60 gig. Has anyone else noticed this curious problem?

It seems to be the hard drive. go and run the diagnostics https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3784647?tstart=0.

  • When using ipod classic 160g ALL music cuts out and files don't play at all

    Hello,
I purchased my ipod a while ago and its been working fine for about a year.
but recently whenever i turn my ipod on, i hear a quiet noise which is like "static" or "white noise" and when i press down a button i hear a muffled click like you've just pulled the headphones out, and none of the files i try to play work... no movies, music, podcasts or anything, the ipod indicates that its playing the file, but the timer just stays at 0.00!
Does anyone know how to address this problem?
    thanks in advance.

happens on mine, too. i just reset the ipod, but sometimes it takes multiple attempts.

  • My Ipod Classic (160G) no longer synchs completely with iTunes (93G).  Have reset and restored to no avail.  AM about to try roll back to a previous version of iTunes, which has been on auto update.

My iPod Classic (160G) used to sync flawlessly with iTunes (93G).
Recently, there seem to be fewer folders syncing.  In particular, it is not syncing more recent adds.  It also occassionally refuses to sync at least one mp3 downloaded from  Amazon.com, giving an unable to sync message with an error code or 50.
I'm running iTunes version 10.7, and the software (2.04) on myiPod is current.
I only use the iPod for music.  I have only one playlist.
Reset and restore did not fix the problem; I'm considering rolling back to a previous version of iTunes.  Are there any other  ideas to consider?
    Please advise.
    Thanks,

iTunes and its sync process with your iPod have been know to choke once the amount of data that needs to be transferred, replaced, or updated, reaches a certain size limit in GBs.

iPod classic hard drive needle sometimes skips (Red X). When it doesn't and seems to power on normally, I start to restore it in Itunes and then it starts to skip again with the Red X on the screen.  One time I was able to run the disk utility in time and reformat the hard drive, but the red x ended up appearing again and the hard drive started skipping again.
Is there anything I can do besides get a new hard drive?
P.S. I have also tried the banging on palm/floor trick and it hasn't worked yet for me.

There nothing we can suggest to save a bad iPod hardisk, except to try some 3rd Party software to try repair the Hardisk.

My 160g iPod classic was originally formatted to PC and I have now moved across to Mac. What problems will I encounter syncing my iPod with my iTunes on my Mac?

If it's formatted for usage with PCs, syncing it from a Mac may be slow, it can't store files which are 4GB or larger, and its firmware can't be updated from a Mac without restoring it.

  • Syncing iPod Classic with iTunes on MacBook Air and QNAP NAS

Not sure what section this would sit under, but as it is primarily about getting my iTunes to work, I’ll post it here, for now:
For various reasons, I’m going to be switching most of my home computer usage from my PC to my Macbook Air (2010).
I have used Supersync to move my iTunes library to a QNAP T210 NAS (where my library file resides) and set up iTunes on the MBA to point to it.  I am using AFP to connect to the NAS.
The router is an Airport Extreme base station with the NAS directly connected via Ethernet and the MBA connected via wifi.
In my new setup, when I click on a song to play, there is a very – barely perceptible – slight lag compared to the old PC setup which used a directly connected USB hard drive. So no real performance issues on the MBA.
The issue arises, however, when I try to sync my iPod Classic 160G (reformatted for Mac, as I thought it would possibly be moreefficient?).  I’m just going through the first sync of  ~31k songs (no video orother content.)  I left it running between midnight and 0800, and it only managed about 3,000 tunes.  My old PC setup usually synced about three times as much in the same period.
Is there anything I can do to improve the performance of my setup?
Would running my NAS connection over NFS be quicker?
How about a powered USB hub to the MBA?
How about connecting the MBA to the Airport extreme via Ethernet (from a USB hub) instead of using the wifi?
Any suggestions (besides running iTunes on a local drive) greatly welcomed.
    Thanks,
    James

I tried this, i selected "manage my music and videos manually" and clicked "apply". when i try and put songs onto my ipod off another computer, i get the warning message telling me if i sync it with this library, it will delete everything off my ipod and replace it with what is in the library on that computer.

  • Unexpected error (-50) while syncing ipod classic 160G

I just upgraded my PC last weekend and copied all my music from my old PC to the new one.
After I installed the latest itunes on my new PC, I used it to restore my ipod and syncing music.
There are more than 3000 songs at all. But the ipod always stucked after a while and then report an unexpected error(-50).
I tried restore the ipod and sync again. It then stucked in a different song.
I also tried using the USB port both in the front and in the back. Also failed.
    It got me crazy!
My ipod model is ipod classic 160G.
I brought it on May, 2010.
Operation system: Windows 7 Ultimate (x64)
Dose anyone have the same problem?
    I need a solution, please.

Error -50 can be caused by USB connection bad -
normally if connected to the low power USB 1.0 port at the front of the PC.
Bad USB cable -try and get another good cable.
Other USB devices overloading the host controller, causing a timeout - Discoonect all otrher USB devices.
Antivirus or other plugins conflict with iTunes - Stop the Antivirus and plugins,
Disconnect from Internet, as malware and other broswer plugins interferes with the Sync.
Dying Hardisk - Do the iPod Disk diagnostic as posted earlier by tt2, it wont fix your problem, but it help in troubleshooting.

  • My iPod Classic 160GB is recognized by computer, and goes through sync process, but still has old stuff...

My iPod Classic 160GB is recognized by computer, and goes through sync process, but still has old stuff...
I feel like there must be an issue with the library location, but I don't know how to correct that.  My Dad recently wiped my computer and deleted Windows XP and installed Windows 7.  I don't know what he did, but my iTunes library is still intact it seems. However, I've added quite a few podcasts that I'd like to sync to my iPod.  When I connect it, it goes through the sync process, but ends quickly and says its safe to disconnect.  None of the new podcasts are on there though.
Also, there was something really wrong with my iTunes account.  When I went to buy something from the store, it wouldn't accept my password, and when I went to reset it, it wouldn't recognize my birthdate and month (I had the correct username).  I ended up creating a new account and purchasing a song.  This time, it did sync the new song onto my iPod, but not the podcasts I'm trying to sync.
As far as the library location, is there anything particular that has to be included in that library in order for it to be recognized by iTunes when you sync?  Awhile back (before my Dad worked on my computer), I had changed the folder location to my external hard drive, but in researching, I saw that I still had in another drive some folders with music that is currently on my iPod.  So it looks like I have some stuff on two different drives... Maybe this has something to do with it not syncing right?
I did check, and my Firewall doesn't have iTunes blocked.
As you can see, I'm not very experienced with all of this... Sorry for the confusion.  If you are interested in helping me and have any questions, please let me know.
I'm hoping someone will be able to help me... I desperately want to be able to listen to my podcasts, as I'm a stay-at-home Mom of 4 little ones, and the podcasts are kind of an "escape" for me when the children are napping or playing. :-)
Thank you in advance for your help!

Oh my goodness!!  I am absolutely thrilled right now B-rock!!  I don't know how I missed it, but when I went back to change the setting like you mentioned, I noticed that the very top box that says "Sync Podcasts" wasn't checked!  I have no idea why... But my heart started to race when I checked that box and all of a sudden it started syncing all my podcasts!!  It's gonna take a long time (I have 385 of them!), but I am just so happy you helped me with this problem.  Thank you SO much!

You can either burn it to a CD or DVD from within iTunes, or back up the entire iTunes library as you would any other folder.

  • How can I sync my iPod Classic with iTunes 11.1.4 and Windows 7 64-bit?

After assistance from ‘b Noir’ (and losing--then finally regaining--my DVD/CD reader in the process), I finally installed the iTunes Version 11.1.4 update on my Windows 7 64-bit PC.  So I am again able to import music from CDs, play music on my PC with iTunes, and burn CDs as I could do with previous iTunes versions.  Then, however, I purchased some new music and tried to sync iTunes with my iPod Classic for the first time since the update to 11.1.4.  So far, I have been spectacularly unsuccessful.  Can anyone help me?
With previous iTunes versions, sync was automatic when I connected iPod to a USB port.  Now when I connect iPod Classic to PC's USB port (I've tried two different ports), iPod’s screen says “Connecting” but iTunes doesn’t open.  And while iPod is connected to the USB port, I can't open iTunes by right-clicking its icon and selecting “Open.”   (ITunes, however, always opens OK if iPod is NOT connected).  With the iPod connected to a PC's USB port, I opened Windows 7 “Devices and Printers.”  Devices shown included both (a) the “Apple iPod USB Device” and (b) “Apple Mobile Device USB Driver.”  I right-clicked each of these device icons in turn and selected “troubleshoot.”  Both times, the report was “Troubleshooting couldn’t identify the problem.”
I am also unable to properly “eject” the iPod.  I tried ejecting (a) from the Windows taskbar's Notification Area, (b) from Windows “Devices and Printers” and (c) by right clicking the iTunes icon and selecting “Eject.”  Nothing worked, so I reluctantly pulled the cable out of the iPod without ejecting.  That causes a yellow triangle with an exclamation point to appear in “Devices and Printers” for my PC—which disappears after shutting down and rebooting the PC.
If I start iTunes and THEN connect the iPod Classic to the USB port, iTunes does nothing and almost instantly freezes (shows as “not responding” in Windows Task Manager and I have to close it via Task Manager).
Suggestions, please, on what I need to do?  My iPod Classic continues to work just fine, but I can't put any of my newly purchased music on it and I guess it will become an expensive paperweight if the battery happens to run down.  If nothing else, is there an old version of iTunes I can download somewhere that likely will work with the iPod Classic and my PC setup? Thanks so much!

    Hi turingtest2,
Thanks so much for your response--yes, I've seen the TS1363 document.
I was able to open iTunes, start the iPod Diagnostic Device Connectivity Test, and connect the iPod when prompted to do so.  The only problem reported by the diagnostic program was "No iPod, iPhone or iPad found." So it does seem as if the TS1363 document should apply.  But I have tried connecting the iPod after executing each of Steps 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, and 9 shown there and nothing has worked so far.  Details follow:
--Went through the iPod Classic troubleshooting assistant--except I did not "reset" the iPod (because having all my "old" music available on the iPod has value to me).
    --Restarted iPod Service.
    --Restarted Apple Mobile Device Service.
--Verified that the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is installed.  There is no down arrow or question mark or other indication of problem with it.
--Tried two different USB ports (I assume that is what is meant by "change your iPod's drive letter"?).
    --Temporarily disabled Norton Antivirus.
For some reason, there are 368 files and 60 folders in the Temp folder under my user name, and it looks like at least some are "read-only."  Windows wouldn't let me delete or move the folder, even after I turned off Norton AntiVirus and closed the programs in the "Notification Area" that I could figure out how to close.
I'm very reluctant to get into messing with Config files or registry keys.  And I have already tried uninstalling/reinstalling iTunes 11.4.1 so many times.  I'm not sure what to do but am considering uninstalling all of the Apple products (again) and try installing an older version of iTunes.  Or maybe I should try to install iTunes 11.4.1 on our Windows 8 laptop and see if the iPod will connect to that (although I really need to be able to sync to my desktop PC).  Probably won't have time to do either for a few days--too many other things to do.  But please let me know if there's something more that's relatively simple and low-risk I could try.  Thanks again!

  • IPod Classic 160g Won't Hold Songs past 2 gigs or so.

Over the past few months my ipod classic had been having periodic playback problems. I listen to it at work and I'd say it gets a solid 6 hours a day on weekdays. It's about 3 years old. The issue was that it would pause songs every hour or so, then skip ahead four or five tracks and start playing normally. If it was a podcast, it would simply stop playing the podcast and not save my position. I put off updating it for awhile because it had a lot of music and I didn't want to have to reload it from my collection. But with this last update, I bit the bullet and did a full restore.
Now, the podcast no longer has playback issues, but it also won't allow me to load more than 2 gigs worth of music/podcast to it. Once it gets to a certain point, it stops loading music and says that files weren't copied due to an unknown error(the songs that it pauses on are random and never the same). Once it gets to this point, I can still browse my library while in itunes. However, if I eject the ipod, it tells me that there is no music loaded, even though the disc space is in use. If I reconnect to itunes, it tells me the ipod needs to be restored.
I've done this about 5 times now. I've also tried uninstalling and reinstalling itunes. Nothing seems to work. All of my music was legally purchased, and are in fact merely ripped from my physical collection.
I'm not sure if this is an itunes problem, or a problem with my ipod. I haven't seen this problem mentioned anywhere else, but I'm not quite sure what to do about it.
Also, if it weren't clear, I'm not very technically inclined.

It seems to be the hard drive. go and run the diagnostics https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3784647?tstart=0.

  • Can iPod Classic Play Movies or Videos?

Hi... I have two iPod Classics (80GB & 160GB) and was wondering if they are capable of playing movies or videos? If not... Are any of the iPods capable of doing this?
    Thanks!

But the 160GB model can play movies I buy from the iTunes store?
    Yes.
If so... Is it a matter of just downloading the movie from the iTunes store and than synching (transferring) the movie onto the iPod?
That and authorizing the computer, either by briefly playing the movie or the Store menu in iTunes.

  • Can new iPod Classic play movies types iPod 5th Gen cannot?

I have an iPod 5th generation and I have not really tried to put movies on it. My wife just got a new iPod classics and we've been uploading (MP4 H.264 codec) movies on her iPod Classic. When I try to upload it on my iPod 5th Gen I get an error these files cannot be uploaded since the iPod cannot play these file types. I had the same with a *.mov file.
Can the new iPod Classic play more than the iPod 5th Gen? Or is there a way to fix this?

Try right clicking the movie in iTunes and picking the "Convert for iPod" option. Then try syncing the converted copy ("converting" makes a new copy, old version is left alone) to your 5th gen.
